So happy to find your tutorials. I've been using the upgraded version of Knitcompanion for about a year and had no idea how to use some of the features until this great video. Thanks so much.
How have I survived as a knitter/crocheter without this!!! I have multiple projects that I need to track where I am. This is a lifesaver for knitting and crocheting! Woohoo!
I have the knit companion thanks to you I learned about it and did the free version for a couple years and then I upgraded and didn’t know what to do so I am now watching each video and I’m amazed at how much more I could be using this app if I just taking the time to learn, so thank you for having all these videos I’m taking them one at a time and digesting then and loving every minute of it. Thank you.
I haven't had to print any of my patterns for YEARS! I bought my KC just as it was finishing its beta testing!!! My iPad is too old to upgrade so I'm still on the Legacy KC which is still a great app. I hope my old iPad lasts for many more years to come but if not, I'll upgrade both the iPad and KC!!! I'm so glad you are a convert and spreading the word of KC like the flu but with better outcomes ... lol!
Viewing this as a refresher for those functions that I only use infrequently. That key is a game changer for all those annoying “at the same time” instructions! Thanks for these videos- they are very helpful!!!
Staci, I truly appreciate you making this series about KC. Your tips make it so much easier to fully utilize it! I love your metaphor "game changer" :-) I do wonder about the trolls who give this video a thumb down. What do they not like? Just themselves, I suppose.
Keep em coming Staci!! You have such a wonderful teaching style. KC is a game changer for sure!!! Not only helping us crafting folks but also saving a lot of trees. No printing necessary !!
Couldn’t remember how to do the quick key from previously waiting this video, but finally needed it. Thank you for these excellent tutorials - you have been my “go to” person for years❤
I downloaded the app after your first video and I so appreciate the features in the free version. Keeping track of my place in a WIP and the counters are good, not having to keep dozens of pages of paper is even better. I love that I can carry all my patterns and WIPs with me in a digital format.
Thank you for this video - I own knitcompanion and have used it all the time. Your video shows me things I was not aware of - and makes things simpler. Any software has a learning curve and this shows us things we didn't even know existed
KnitCompanion is awesome. I think the subscription to the upgraded/paid version is well worth the money. Compared to cost of quality yarn, it is a very reasonable price and the functions are amazing. I know I make fewer mistakes and ripout less when I am using KnitCompanion. Thanks for the videos Staci. Even though I've been using KC for a while now, I learned new things from your video.
I immediately downloaded Knit Companion after your last video and have used it almost non-stop. Now this video has taught me so much more! Going to watch the video again through my TV so I can have the app open on my iPad as you are demonstrating. Thank you so much for introducing this app and can’t wait to learn more.
I first learned about this app from you, and I’ve used the free version ever since! I can’t imagine how I got along without it. Thanks for showing us what’s available in the upgrade.
Thank you, Staci, for doing this series. I could use even more videos like this (beyond your five videos) to just keep going into the great features of KC. Thanks!!! Awesome teaching! Very very helpful. I know I just asked you to do even more work, but it’s very very helpful.
Thank You I love KnitCompanion!!! I didn’t know that you can specify the amount of rows on the row counters. I make bears for The Mother Bear project and I use the counter to count 8 rows almost every day. I was always resenting the counters back to zero manually. KnitCompanion is amazing!!!
Thanks so much. I"ve been using KC for over 5 years and am always amazed when I discover new features. Adding in new pages is something that I do quite frequently and never understood the check and x boxes. So thanks for that tip (and several others too!).
This is so perfect - I knitting an Arne and Carlos pillow for my Mom and I have spent more time finding my place in the chart than knitting. Can’t wait to sit down with knitCompanion and knit away. Thanks Staci for brining this to my attention!!
I got the knit companion after your first video. I love it. Thanks for this next video, I was amazed what else it can do. Can’t wait for the next one. Thank you Staci .
I love this tool! Thanks for the series. I appreciate the mkal merge. That’s a real game changer. I have stopped printing patterns entirely since using KC!
Thank you so much for introducing me to Knit Companion. I loved my other knitting pattern software but ever since Apple updated their software I was not able to get into my patterns. I love this new software and appreciate your tutorials on how to use.
I've been using the software for 3 years....it is absolutely a game changer....I also use the counter buttons to document the row of lifelines for those time I remove the needles and rip it all back. Wish you had these videos out when I was struggling learning my way through it back in the day but I did learn something from this one! Who knew you could link a video :) I still have lots to learn to utilize the software to it full capability.
How did I live without this app and your first KC video tutorial? Thank you for making another more advanced tutorial. So, I’ve been experimenting with one counter being the row repeat and the next counter being the amount of row repeats. Your videos have helped me become a better knitter and crocheter. Thank you!
I really appreciate all of your videos, but this one has helped me decide to go for the pod version. I had been using KC for awhile on the free side. Just happy to have counters my kids couldn’t click lol but now I need the highlighting and note taking. And my husband hates the clutter of the pattern and notions being left out. So this will help significantly. I do love that I have the ability to carry it all on my phone and so I just need a project bag and I can knit away anywhere. Thank you!!! Looking forward to more of these if you have them. Sad I missed the giveaway. But so grateful for your work!
KC university tutorials are so easy to watch and learn new features. Well worth the cost. Annual cost is nominal compared to value.👍 One item you did not mention when on slider edit is invert. I find it extremely useful to invert so all the page becomes colored except highlighted row. Very nice!
I’ve been using kC since the beginning. Being able to say “next” and then it advances to the next row is a game changer!!! I know you didn’t mention that, but it needed to be said!!!! I love your videos and I’ve been subscribed for years!!!!
Love the video - made all the difference in being able to use the app. Question - how do you remove something? I added a KEY that I would like to remove.
Love your teaching ... after your first video I purchased and love this and after flubbing around for a while I came back to revisit both tutorials and it really helped to flub around because watching without knowing exactly what to look for made my first viewing too abstract. I am hoping you do a another one soon, I really resonate with and am grateful for your teaching style. I found a way to bring in a photo of my own work and then mark notes on it It was a complicated slipper that required lots of pieces sewn together illogically and it really helped to label it flat and then work with it having penned notes onto the photo. I just made a few notes in Pages and inserted the photo, then saved as a pdf and air dropped it from computer to my ipad because I don't know how to do it yet directly on the ipad. Anyway I love this software and your instructions and persona.
Thank you for this. I started to use knit companion when you released your last video on it. This certainly helped me with the row counters and the pattern merge.
Thank you for doing these very informative videos. This app is a total game changer and I’m constantly using it for both knitting and crochet projects. I’m doing a fair
Depuis votre première vidéo sur l’application, je l’ai téléchargée et utilisée 😊 Super Peut être passerai je à la version payante un de ces jours 😊 Merci vous donnez envie de faire de nouvelles choses et utiliser de nouveaux produits Thanks
I use knit companion but for Android. Unfortunately it does not have as many features for the android os. She hopes to change that but it is still worth the yearly subscription.
If you edit the description to add a space right after the playlist link, that will make the link hyperactive so people can jump right to the playlist by clicking on the active link.
@@verypinkknits I thought they would, so I tried to change it, went back on and it was the “old” setting again…I must’ve done something wrong, so I tried it again and it worked! Yay! Thanks so much for your help!
Thanks so much for your great KC tutorials. I am loving the program and have found all your videos helpful. I have the paid subscription version and my icon to rotate the page to landscape has disappeared. It used to be on the right hand side above the marker. Do you have any suggestions as to how to get it back?
Thank you for these videos. I've been using knit companion for years and your videos have taught me so much. Have you done a video of the new knit companiin? My pages don't show up in the top ribbon. There's a bottom ribbon that tells you how many pages there are, but I can't figure out how to get to my 2nd page. Help!
Thanks for reviewing this. Question: if a pattern has multiple sizes, how can you highlight the variations for that size. For example if I’m making a size Small I usually circle the paper pattern for all the Small instructions.
Here is the reply I got from the developer...I will fit a demonstration in to the next video, if there is time. 1. they can use scribble (it has a highlighter tip for the pen, or in the case of this person wanting to circle their size they can do that with the regular pen tip just like on paper), 2. or they can add highlights from edit/highlights. For highlights see here: www.knitcompanion.com/ufaqs/add-highlights/ One other nice thing you can also do with either scribble or highlights is “white out” all the sizes except yours. So pick a white as a color and make it not at all transparent, and “mark out” the sizes you don’t want. For some this is much easier and less confusing than lots of numbers still showing, even if the one you want is marked.
I downloaded the app just based on the tutorial (I started at 12!), but when I realized the features I wanted were “paid” ones, I subscribed without hesitation. Now I’m visiting the entire series so I can get the most out of it. I used to type out my own instructions, row by row, so I wouldn’t get confused (ADHD here), but now I can save time AND TREES! Looking forward to finding out how I can get my pdf's out of “Books” and on to KC without emailing them to Dropbox first. (And can I delete them from Dropbox without harming my KC entry?)
Interesting. When I have a .pdf currently of Ravelry free patterns iPad software lets you select Acrobat vs. iBooks and I select Acrobat on account of the features Acrobat has which allows me to make moveable highlights, add notes to patterns of things I preferred to change or errors in the way the pattern was written. As my iPad is smaller than my laptop, I use it more. Even though it isn't the newest iPad, it is an iPad 4, it is working well. But the free version of KnitComanion, I'm going to check out. My line of work was computer graphic arts so knowing Acrobat well has really helped me, I do see, however, that for many knitters, this would be a God-send, especially if they have an iPad already. Thanks for sharing. But I have upgraded my IOS as far as this will let me. But if I get a newer iPad, certainly something to keep in mind.
I enjoyed this video. I hate buying apps. You have good intentions, install the app and it does not work out as expected. Your review has been very helpful. It seems that this app can do what I was hoping for. Write and edit patterns. Do you use the app to write your patterns?
knitCompanion is for interacting with existing patterns. There is another app called PatternGenius, also made by knitCompanion, that is for designing. I have videos on that app, too.
Hello, I have a question... how did you delete the extra pages added to that patter in your mystery kal section. And thank you for making these videos, they’ve been most helpful!
@@verypinkknits thank you, just emailed them. I want to learn and get the most out of this awesome app. I found their website very confusing. Maybe it’s because I was using my iPad to navigate it? Anyways thank you for your very quick response 💕
I’m knitting a vest bottom up, with 4 cable charts going around (Laredo). I’m at point of breaking apart for armholes. Is it possible to put in new counters now, to keep track of decreases for these, and neck when I get there, without messing up my chart counters? BTW, I LOVE your KC videos!
I bought this mainly for pencil notes but I found I cannot write with the pencil on notes, they ave to be typed, but I do write on the pattern itself and that is helpful, but a bit disappointing ... the key is a great idea I could not figure it out, so thanx ... I am a bit shy about using this, used to working pdf's from my laptop and adding notes where the pdf's allow, many do not. This second video helps me try to switch over to my ipad and make use of this app. I love the bars and the dot where you left off in the pattern.
If you're using the paid version on your iPad, you get a feature called Scribble, which allows you to write on your patterns. I demonstrate Scribble in the first video.
@@verypinkknits no I purchased with scribble but what I am saying is that you cannot handwrite notes, you have to type them, so when you tap on add a note you have to be in edit mode and you can only scribble on the actual pattern in knit mode, unless I am mixed up I don't think ... you can only right directly on the pattern, like say you want to write a note that is larger than you can squeeze in on the actual pattern itself you have to change modes a add a note where notes are stored hope i am making sense thanx anyway I am glad to have the software just need to stop being intimidated by it
Thanks so much for your videos! You always do a great job of explaining things. How do you get a copy of a paper pattern turned into a PDF to load on the app?
I know there is a good answer to this on the knitCompanion website, but I'm not sure where it is. Please contact knitCompanion directly for support - support@knitcompanion.com
Love how your tutorials are helping us maximize use of KC. Question I have. Once you finish a project, are you going to leave it on KC or remove it? Seems like it could get cluttered with a long history of projects.
I've been deleting the projects and pdfs from KC when I'm finished. I haven't been diligent about it (you can see in the video that I have several patterns in there), but there is no need to keep them there once I'm finished with the knit. If I decide to knit a project again, I can always pull it back into the software. If I know I'm going to knit something again I will likely leave it in the app, since all of my notes will be there.
@@verypinkknits if you have notes and details, u can airdrop it to your computer and save it on a thumb drive, then air drop it back when u need it with notes intact.
I would like a comparison of the edit vs the set up Sections. I just want to navigate better vs seeing a video and remembering that is where you did that.
Hi Staci, It’s Karen. I noticed KC has a new chart upgrade. I don’t know if others viewers would be interested in a tutorial on that...but I’m throwing it out there as a request.
Just realized that my free version will not allow all the “edit” features you demonstrated. Guess an upgrade may be in order. Are you using the yearly subscription version or the basics “one-time” upgrade?
Hi Stacey Thanks for this tutorial...always thought Knit Companion may be a big daunting but it’s becoming clearer with your help. However when I try to hold the key down to add my abbreviations to the botttom of the page it just keeps offering me the option to subscribe to get this facility implying that it is not included in the free option?
Is it possible to add another vertical line marker? I usually knit a small size, but charts are usually made with the stitch counts for the largest size with bold lines to match the stitch count for smaller sizes. For example, a chart may have 100 stitches for the largest size, but I only knit the middle 80 for a small or medium. Having two vertical lines would allow me to block off the extra stitches I don’t need. Currently, I take a pencil and shade out the extra stitches anytime I work a chart made this way because it can get very confusing. Also, is it possible to keep those lines if chose to export to a PDF and print?
I don't know if that is possible...I haven't seen how to do it myself. You can always ask the developer directly if you have a question. She can be reached via Facebook message or her website, links to both are in the video description field.
Sure you can as many stitch markers as you like, See here: www.knitcompanion.com/ufaqs/add-highlights/ if you are using iOS you can also use scribble to draw more markers right on the chart (scribble even has a ruler for drawing perfectly straight lines). if you need further assistance please email support@knitcompanion.com
Hi Staci, so I’m back with another question. I have KC on both my iPhone and iPad, but for some reason, it doesn’t sync up… ie; I use my iPad at home but went to a dr appt yesterday and the pattern was on my phone but none of my counting or highlights etc were there. Is that usual or do I need to do something-to get them to sync?
Beverly - when you have a project in progress, you have to save it as a project in the Cloud if you want to open it on another device. Opening the PDF file (not the project file) will open the file without your counter and notes. th-cam.com/video/RTM2zDn94eI/w-d-xo.html
Can you help Mr, I do cross stitch and I would like to highlight the stitch I just worked on to know what I have done, tks for any advice u can give me
Thanks so much. I had no idea how to do any of the things shown esp the counters and how to add pages. (I’m not sure what I’d done to get them left out in the first place). Is there any way to get PDF files that are on your device but not in ravelry?
Yes - the other way to get files on your device (besides Ravelry) is through Dropbox. It only takes a minute to set up a free Dropbox account, and it's really easy to use.
I knit for myself and my family, mostly. I get yarn from lots of different places, including independent dyers on Etsy and bigger online stores like knitpicks.com, or yarn.com.
@@verypinkknits ok thank you so much! I just know that over 40 years you probably have done a lot of projects so I was thinking about who you give them too ect.

When you’re setting up the highlight bar, select the ‘invert’ button!
Thanks. I need this. Love KC.
You're welcome! You can send your questions to support@knitcompanion for help.
You can designate counters for whatever you need...maybe keep 1-4 for your cable charts, and use 5 and 6 for your decreases.
VeryPink Knits Thank you!
Thanks. The idea to save to KC if I think I will knit it again is the perfect solution.
Yes - I'm helping with the beta testing on this update. I'm sure we'll cover it in video soon!
Thanks for your tutorial! How do you delete a page on the pdf if you changed your mind about combining two PDFs by adding a page or two?
I'm not sure...you can contact knitCompanion directly for support at support@knitcompanion.com
@@verypinkknits Thanks for replying. I will.
Is it true that you can say NEXT and the counter will advance for you?
I have the free one would definitely purchase the advanced if that is true.
Yes, I covered that in the third video of the series, I demonstrated it on charts.
Just realized that my free version will not allow all the “edit” features you demonstrated. Guess an upgrade may be in order. Are you using the yearly subscription version or the basics “one-time” upgrade?
I have the "Setup & Essentials" version...you can visit the KnitCompanion website to see the Feature List, and what is offered in each version.
I use all 6 counters when I'm knitting socks, that way I can keep track and make sure they're both the same size
I love this program.
Hi Stacey
Thanks for this tutorial...always thought Knit Companion may be a big daunting but it’s becoming clearer with your help.
However when I try to hold the key down to add my abbreviations to the botttom of the page it just keeps offering me the option to subscribe to get this facility implying that it is not included in the free option?
Yes - in this video, most of the features I demonstrate are part of the paid version. The last video was about the free version.
@@verypinkknits thanks! I’ll have to see if I can figure out how to get that done! (Have I mentioned “techy challenged”? Lol!
Very informative, Thanks!!
Thank you so much. Great software.
So useful! Thank you!
Can you help Mr, I do cross stitch and I would like to highlight the stitch I just worked on to know what I have done, tks for any advice u can give me
Thank you sooo much for these informations !!!
Thanks I’m going to check this out
Thanks so much.
VeryPink Knits thanks! I thought you had to pay for Dropbox.
If you have a google account you should be able to use google docs too. Same principle as Dropbox
Who do you make all of your projects for? Where do you get yarn?
I knit for myself and my family, mostly. I get yarn from lots of different places, including independent dyers on Etsy and bigger online stores like knitpicks.com, or yarn.com.
@@verypinkknits ok thank you so much! I just know that over 40 years you probably have done a lot of projects so I was thinking about who you give them too ect.
Thank you so much !
Can you have more than one quick key? My pattern has abbreviations on one page and symbols on another.
I dont see where it tells you how to change rows. Just manually with the highlighter bar? I dont need
the upgraded version for that.
So after adding the pattern how do you remove it? I have a KC mess and I am trying to clean up
My horizontal highlight is a one tap bar instead of a slider. I am tryIng to use this for cross stitch and I can’t find anything to show me how to make that one a slider. Does anyone have any advice?
I am seeking a way to change colors in a colored chart.
QUESTION: Is there a way to import PDF patterns we have on our computer or tablet that are NOT on Ravelry??
Rachel S.
Sure, see here www.knitcompanion.com/ufaqs/add-pdf/. If you need further assistance please email support@knitcompanion.com
Yes, through Dropbox. You can sign up for a free Dropbox account.
I love kc but do not know how to mirror a chart. Can you help me?
I have not seen the first video but can you use this app to create a new pattern?
No...this app is for interacting with existing patterns. knitCompanion has another app called PatternGenius that helps to create charted patterns.
@@verypinkknits thank you .
How do you move the patterns to the app?
