The sound of the clicking needles are so soothing to me. It brings back memories of my mom knitting our Norwegian wool socks and mittens. She would also knit with the 5 needles and could make patterns with no charts. Wish I still had some of the items she knit for us 60 yrs ago.
Need to emphasize that when you work back, you always slip the first stitch before you work the rest of the stitches. For Arne this is just part of what working back means. It’s in his deep knowledge of the process. Novices with this particular heel construction need to be reminded until it becomes part of their toolkit.
Love this heel..you introduced this to me when I knitted your children's sock outturn. Surprised not knitted by more people..I don't like heel flap... german short row so easy
Thank you for this explanation and demonstration of the short row heel. Some things are much easier to understand when you watch someone show you how to do it.
What timing! My niece will be visiting in 30 minutes to show me how to do this very technique on my Christmas stocking! As you said, it is the knitting the stitches back in that has given me the trouble. Now I know to look for the grandmother. By the way, I really like the sound of the knitting needles. Clicking needles and a crackling fire, the sound of winter for me. Thank you!
How is it that you are reading our minds! Toni P and I were spending the afternoon together in Tucson talking about knitting this very heel - and HERE YOU ARE. What a tremendous joy to run across this!
What a coincidence, I just gave my acrylic version of this stocking away today. I enjoyed knitting it very much while I was recovering from surgery, but a young lady was impressed with your beautiful pattern and I gifted her the stocking. I'm always encouraged when young folks show an interest in something I love doing, and hope it makes them want to learn how to make it themselves one day. Thank you again for this lovely pattern. I look forward to knitting it again! ❤😘
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! I never understood the grandmother stitch but your explanation of daughter, mother and grandmother made so much sense!
Thanks for explaining this! Love the sound of the needles, brings back memories of my younger days when Mum and Grandma sat knitting with their long straight metal needles.
I like the sound! I suffered a concussion 10 years ago and couldn't knit for several years because of the movement of the needles bothering my eyes/brain and the sound of the needles. Now, thankfully, I can once again enjoy the sound of the clickety needles. I treasure it now because it means that I am once again enjoying one of my favourite hobbies. And I am grateful to you two lovely gentlemen because your videos have taught me so much about "reading" the knitting and just knowing what to do. I think that so many of us were taught to knit only by following very detailed written patterns instead of understanding how knitting works. I'm self-taught from a book so I had no choice. Your very generously shared knowledge has been game-changing. THANKYOU!!!!!
Thank you, that makes it very clear. After being sick all last year when I couldn't concentrate on anything I have finally picked up the Brioche sweater again and am making progress. Next I'm determined to do socks ! Enjoy your week !
Always good to review techniques and demonstrate so that everyone can not only finish their own stockings but hopefully show others too. You are the best at listening to those knitting along and doing what it takes to make sure everyone learns and becomes confident. Nice video. Shirley
I will certainly give you a thumbs up but I thought you explained the heel beautifully in your written instructions for the Christmas KAL. I’m with Arne: I love Christmas and think about it all year long. The day after Christmas i begin making next year’s gifts…so that I can relax and play during the holidays…and when I take that tree down, I’m thinking “only 10 more months until I can get another one.” Now, I know you disagree with me about the tree, but that’s the way I am. It is a work of art!! I love the tree. I wish I could have one all year round. Love the sound of knitting needles. Let’s have more clicks going forward. None of this silent knitting! ❤️❤️ to you two for 2024.
I was making the left leaning increase way harder than it is. Thanks for clearing that up. Seeing you two pop up in my notifications always makes my day!
I had never knitted a sock before and spent quite a while watching the 2023 heel videos and tutorials from a while ago - finally jumped that heel hurdle and was able to continue on. I’ll be using this video as my go-to reference next time I attempt a sock 🙂. Thanks for always thinking of us and helping us when we struggle.
I loved doing the stocking in the knit along . The pattern is lovely. It was my first time of color work. I did mine in the round . I need to try dpn 's.Arne you make it look so easy.Thank you for the demonstration.
I LOVE the clickety-clack of the needles. I've turned heels before but never using this method. I thought it was very clearly written in the pattern and now think it is my preferred method. I can understand how someone who had never turned a heel before may have found it difficult so this video will certainly make it easier to visualise.... oh and all the people I give gift to are getting a stocking next Christmas! Two gifts in one... I have to fun of knitting and they have the fun of leaving them out... hopefully to be filled (shhh... don't tell them That I might sneak in a surprise 😁)
😂how did you know that’s where my needles were stuck in the mud? Thank you for the explanation with color coded visuals, Arne. I will be digging in to my stocking heel today and do as I’m told, Carlos. I will be on track to finish the stocking before the end of winter 2024.
Thanks for this detailed demonstration, the proper way to close the gaps is now perfectly clear to me. My Christmas stocking had no holes but I don’t think I closed them properly. Now I know exactly what to do on the next one.
I taught myself to knit backwards because I dont like the process of turning work. So I'm also always knitting and not technically purling. It also means my yarn is still always in the back. It wasnt till I learned Norwegian knitting and watching the 2 of you show how you knit and purl Norwegian style that I was finally able to breakdown what I needed to be able to knit backwards.
Thank you very much for this clear explanation!!! I love the daughter, mother en grandmother stich. Now it's very clear to me! At 11:45 Close the gaps. ;-)🙏
I prefer circulars but I do love how much easier it is to keep track of counts and stitch patterns on 4 needles. You're right, folks that don't do Norwegian purls need to know the whole "wyif" and "wyib". I love this heel because you don't have to think much to do it, just watch the gaps for the most part.
I did finish the sock in time despite having a problem with the purl grandmother! Thank you for the tutorial. Having never knitted a Christmas stocking, it was fun to know that lots of people all over the world were participating. I will make another different one next time but with longer needles😀
Awesome! Thank you so much! I just finished the heel a couple of days ago after going back and forth figuring it out. I told myself it can’t be that hard. Millions of people do this every day. Lol The right side of the heel came out perfect. The left I messed up by lifting the mother stitch instead of grandmother stitch. (Can’t figure out why I did that. Lol) But, in the end I felt amazed how those stitches turned into a beautiful heel. Some people are so clever to create these patterns. Now I just started the snowflake section. Thank you again for teaching and all you both do. ❤
I had trouble a couple of times doing the short heel. But finally I decided to work just what the instructions said. And Voila! I was pretty invested by that point to finish that stocking. So amazing. Thank you!
Wow your way is easier than I was taught with ssk and p2together.❤ slipping the stitches gives a neater edge and easier to pick up stitches. I love the clicking of needles lol you keep a rhythm going
Hi guys thanks for the lesson I might try and do this heel but I am used to doing a heel a little differently but I think I will be able to follow the direction now see you next time
I would highly recommend the stocking pattern. I participated in the recent xmas stocking knit along and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I would say " give it a go". I've only knitted 3 pairs of socks and I managed to knit a beautiful stocking. I do think the tutorial helps "visual learners"
Hello ARNE AND CARLOS Iam from Sri Lanka .Thank you for explaining the principle behind short row shaping.I can do my sock knitting with a clear mind.❤🎉😊
This is my favorite heel as a beginner and I really appreciate your demonstration and explanation. It makes the most sense to me so I can translate it to loom, machine, even crochet easily.
Oooooh gonna have to watch this slowly several more times…..probably stopping and starting again and again……….😂😂😂 that’s the beauty of video! You can!!! I’m fairly advanced but, I’m a slow learner until I have my aha moment….. Thanks this helps! Bless you guys!!!
Honestly that tutorial was clear as mud ! you're better of going to Roxanne Richardson or Suzanne Bryon or Nimble Needles or Earthtones Girl for their tutorials !
Thank you for the tutorial again. I will need to practice this before I try it on the stocking. I have done other heels but not this style. I love your curtains on the windows and the candle sticks match perfectly!
Thank you for sharing this. I'm sure I did a good enough version of this heel on the Christmas stocking, but I'll return to this video next time I do a short row heel. The clicking of the needles was great! P.S. Who was the mystery torso in the video? 🧐😄
I think some confusion, and the "slip as if to knit" or "slip as if to purl," comes from the fact that many of us purl differently than Arne's technique. And it's with the yarn in front. Neither is right or wrong, just different. I'm simply pointing out that maybe some people don't understand that Arne does a "Norwegian purl." (I think that's what it's called.)
Hello on Sunday, wish I had this video when I was knitting the Christmas stocking, however I did prevail. BTW, was that a ghost that crossed twice in front of the camera? 🙄
Thank you for the demonstration of the heel, I will try to do it with dpl pointed needles. I love the needles clicking. I need to practice. I was trying to do mine with needles in the round.
Loved hearing the needles... how many stitches should be left before starting the increase rows? As apparently I only have the chart that states the two days to do the heal and not how to do it. Love you both!
No, no, the easiest sock in the world is your spiral sock pattern! 😁 I am making my fifth pair now. Next, yes, I will be making a sock with the German short row heel for a fitted sock.
My Aha moment is that a Boomerang heel is achieved by creating double stitches (knit one through the front and back loop (kfb)) all the way along the needle. Where here you've got a stitch left on the needle, that stitch would be made into a kfb and then left on the next row. That's what I've been doing. In fact, kfb is what's used in the instructions to the German version of one of your books. This is a different version of short row heels to that... Not saying it's wrong, just different. Will give this a go next time - looks easier than fighting with too tightly knit kfbs!
I recently started knitting socks. I thought metal needles in such small sizes would be a problem…stitches would slip off, I think. So I ordered an entire sock set of sock needles. They are good but so fragile, I fear breaking them. What type do you use for small sock needles?
The sound of the clicking needles are so soothing to me. It brings back memories of my mom knitting our Norwegian wool socks and mittens. She would also knit with the 5 needles and could make patterns with no charts. Wish I still had some of the items she knit for us 60 yrs ago.

Love this heel..you introduced this to me when I knitted your children's sock outturn. Surprised not knitted by more people..I don't like heel flap... german short row so easy
Thank you for providing this extra explanation and demo of the KAL heel. 😊
There is always something to learn from Arne - picking up bars within the knitting to close a gap is brilliant. Thank you so much for that tip
Thank you for this explanation and demonstration of the short row heel. Some things are much easier to understand when you watch someone show you how to do it.
I am always amazed by Arne's purling technique. Ouf!... So many whirl... 🤯
I love you Arne...
I love you Carlos! 😊
I'll be doing this heel today. I'm knitting a pair of Pair perfect socks and I'm at the heel today. Love you both
I like the sound of the clicking needles! Thank you for showing the short row heel. You make it look easy and not scary! Thanks for sharing!
Holy cow. Arne is so fast. Is speed a goal in knitting.
Thank you!
The clicking clacking of the needles reminds me of my mom sitting knitting her wonderful sweaters.❤️
I love when you use terms that make me think of you learning to knit in childhood with your Grandmother teaching you. Lovely.
The sound of the needles is like music and it is very soothing. 😊
How is it that you are reading our minds! Toni P and I were spending the afternoon together in Tucson talking about knitting this very heel - and HERE YOU ARE. What a tremendous joy to run across this!
😍
I think I need another cruise with Arne teaching me this!
What a coincidence, I just gave my acrylic version of this stocking away today. I'm always encouraged when young folks show an interest in something I love doing, and hope it makes them want to learn how to make it themselves one day.

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! I never understood the grandmother stitch but your explanation of daughter, mother and grandmother made so much sense!
Arne, you are an excellent instructor. Now I understand. Thx for making this video. 💗
I love the sound of the needles. Thank you for sharing the short row heel. Please pet Freya for me
Thanks for explaining this! Love the sound of the needles, brings back memories of my younger days when Mum and Grandma sat knitting with their long straight metal needles.

I know this isn’t a knitting subject but I sure miss your cooking podcasts.
That is SO much neater than picking up stitches down the side of the gusset where I always end up with a hole at the corner. Brilliant
Thank you, that makes it very clear. After being sick all last year when I couldn't concentrate on anything I have finally picked up the Brioche sweater again and am making progress. Next I'm determined to do socks ! Enjoy your week !
And now I have learned a new way to do short row. Thank you! ❤
The clicking-clacking of needles brings back fond memories of my grandmother.
You are welcome!

I did it! I conquered the heel! Thank you, Arne & Carlos!
Well done!

Thank you for the demo. I did struggle with the heel then fell behind but I plan to finish it.
Always educational and FUN! Even if I am late watching! It's great background for weaving in ends!!
😂how did you know that’s where my needles were stuck in the mud?
Thank you for the explanation with color coded visuals, Arne.

Glad it was helpful!
Your drapes are gorgeous!

You are welcome!
Outstanding! This was very helpful. I like this version of the heel very well.
You are welcome!
This non knitter understands everything.😂😂
My feel good guys. Thx.❤
I had trouble a couple of times doing the short heel. But finally I decided to work just what the instructions said. And Voila! I was pretty invested by that point to finish that stocking. So amazing. Thank you!

Knitting with very pleasant sound, music of the needles.
Hello ARNE AND CARLOS Iam from Sri Lanka .Thank you for explaining the principle behind short row shaping.I can do my sock knitting with a clear mind.❤🎉😊
I love the sound of your needles :-)
I just started my second Arne & Carlos Avent Stocking this morning. ❤
Great timing!
Wind chimes sound... 😊
In fact very soothing sound.
Thank you for this. Now makes much better sense. X
Thanks guys...will come back to this when I need to...
Thank you for sharing your heel tips. Love your curtains. Sian North Wales 😊

Thanks ❤. Another great strategy added to my tool kit
Thank you for the tutorial again. I will need to practice this before I try it on the stocking. I have done other heels but not this style. I love your curtains on the windows and the candle sticks match perfectly!
Thank you!
Thank you for this tutorial !😊
Us those needles the next time you do "The Sound of Knitting," I am sure the conductor would love that!
Great instructions. Thank you!❤
Thank you I will definitely try the heel again. My first heel was awful so I did the stocking again without the heel 😂
Thank you for sharing this. I'm sure I did a good enough version of this heel on the Christmas stocking, but I'll return to this video next time I do a short row heel. The clicking of the needles was great! P.S. Who was the mystery torso in the video? 🧐😄

You are welcome, and it is a fun challenge to use DPNs
I *like* the clickety-clack of the needles!😃
So helpful!
Excellent information
I like the clickety-clack! 👍 Sounds like progress!
Thank you, I think I now understand why I have those holes in my heel 😂

Yes, that is a great one as well. This one has a hee though
Oh my gosh, the lightbulb came on now I can finish my stocking😂
Yankees you! Needles clicking like the jingle of bangle bracelets.😊❤
Yo soy una de quienes dejé el tejido en el talón. Espero poder retomarlo ahora.
Is it possible to prevent curling with the stockinette stitch?
Oh there is k2tog an p2tog.thanks for explaining you make a gap and then close the gap. I get it now.
Is it possible to knit the heel, then knit to the toe, then to the cuff.
Dpn needles are a problem too for me. Why did you slip purlwise on both the purl and knit rows?
❤❤❤❤❤❤
Did you pick up the same leg to increase on both knit and purl (left)? On the purl row I couldn’t see well enough. Thank you.
My Aha moment is that a Boomerang heel is achieved by creating double stitches (knit one through the front and back loop (kfb)) all the way along the needle. Where here you've got a stitch left on the needle, that stitch would be made into a kfb and then left on the next row. That's what I've been doing. This is a different version of short row heels to that... Not saying it's wrong, just different. Will give this a go next time - looks easier than fighting with too tightly knit kfbs!
So,the heel is knitted into a diamond ,then sewn or knitted into the tube of the sock?
I recently started knitting socks. I thought metal needles in such small sizes would be a problem…stitches would slip off, I think. So I ordered an entire sock set of sock needles. They are good but so fragile, I fear breaking them. What type do you use for small sock needles?
We use both regular and bamboo, if you have a problem with the stitches sliding off try bamboo.
