Matt went on to be quite succesful as a producer. After the C64 music he went on to write and produce his own dance music on an independant label. He DJ'd for a bit in clubs. He was a part of Motiv8 whose most famous track was Rockin For Myself. He's worked on remixes for Pulp (Disco 2000). Later on he was part of the production company who won an Ivor Novello award for Cher - I Believe. He is still working as a producer today. He still doesnt wear a belt.

This tune was very ahead of its time, especially it being so long and extensive for the C64. It's like the Blue Monday of video game music. Matt Gray is definitely one of the most underrated composers of all time and deserves more praise.

I was just thinking of something... game music isn't just background ambience, it's also a reflection of the main character's spirit, personality, and skill!
Since you can't talk to the ninja, this music is the best way you can relate to him

As the C64 was dying, Jon Wells was out there trying to save it.
This was one of Jon's big efforts to try and save the scene, and bring one final Last Ninja to the C64.
Jon created a series of demos, and music was created to try and convince System 3 that they could make one final game in the series.
Jon was planning to allow the Ninja to interact more with the background of the game, and be able to walk on the grass. .

A map was even created of one of the levels proposed by Jon to be in the game, but sadly System 3 turned down Jon's proposal to bring the game to the C64 (Even with Jon willing to take the whole project on himself), so Jon moved on.

The start and main melodic line is really awesome, but what do we have next... It seems unbelievable how many marvellous "small" melodies Matt intervowen into one "computer tune". 0:50-1:21, 2:07-2:22, 4:57-5:40. And the best part 3:32-4:26 is utterly brilliant. Masterfull melody. It sounds to me like some "Honor theme" or "meditation theme". I see one man gathering his inner power to fullfill his quest. Last ninja vs the whole city.

I remember 3 things happening when this game and the original came out in 1988 &1987
1.C64's sales went through the roof
2.After about 4-5 years of battling it out with other 8-bit computers like the Zx Spectrum and Amstrad CPC 464 it was Confirmation that the C64 was the true king of ALL the 8-bit machines. No other 8-bit and even 16-bit versions could NOT come close to the quality of the C64 version.
3.The game achieved Legendary status very early on, a True milestone of a computer game.

Hey the Spectrum was a great little 8-bit and when the 128k version came the tunes improved massively. This is a classic tune but the Spectrum and Amstrad and the 64 all have good and bad games for each system. 128k home brew games for the spectrum have some cracking little tunes in 2019. Try redshift for example. Class!

    • @OceanLoader

@@stewsretroreviews This is true, though the AY chip never quite matched the SID. And the C64 is prob the only system in history when a bad game sold by the truck-load just because gamers wanted to hear the music! If I saw Martin Galway, Chris Huelsbeck, Steve Rowlands, the Maniacs of Noise (Tel, Bjerregaard etc), Matt Gray etc then the game was basically a must-buy!!

I've said this on many videos of Last Ninja 2 music.
If this music sounded like this on a Japanese Nintendo game it would be considered one of the greatest game sound tracks of all time. However, because it is on the Commodore 64 by a UK composer, it will be ignored.

I did not live this time I am 35. but 15 years ago I met this magnificent team called Commodore 64 and when 10 years ago I played this game I felt very identified with this music, and from there that whenever I can try to play it, this music is amazing with such limited hardware to today and They played music 10 times better than now. My congratulations to the creator of this music

It`s not that they don`t make games or music like this anymore, it`s just that we kinda lost this spark from our childhood...

This has to be one of the most badass pixelated tunes I've ever heard in my life! I didn't even grow up in the time period when this game came out and yet I still find it incredible.

Got this back in late '89 and used to spend more time listening to the tunes doing air guitar than playing the game! Superb Matt Gray track this!
