    The thing about Chrissie was that she was quite introverted, almost reluctant, during interviews - but onstage she was electric. RIP Chrissie.

  • @wilks6
    @wilks6 2 ปีที่แล้ว +28

    Divinyls in full flight were a live act like few others. Chrissy could fix you with a stare that made you feel like you were the only person in the room. There was often electric tension on stage because Chrissy & Mark McEntee (guitar) had a tempestuous/ on and off relationship.
    Anyone who enjoys Divinyls but hasn't dived deep, I'd suggest a few tracks - "Hey, Little Boy" (brilliant official video) the live version of "Tempremental" and a blistering cover of The Easybeats' "Make You Happy."

    Pretty sure that was 1988 at the Brisbane World Expo - Chrissy was pretty chilled in that show, in the early years she'd have you cowering in fear.

    Thanks boys - a great band indeed. Chrissy was an absolute 'take no shit' female lead vocalist in an era when there weren't many women in the business. The honesty of her delivery in the all their songs set them apart.
    R.I.P. with love Chrissy.

    She was one of a kind. Her strange enigmatic stage presence, her amazing voice… like honestly. Her voice surely must have been workshopped and practiced relentlessly. The already unique timbre, then add the rasp and top off with a sprinkle of the yodels. Pretty good formula imo

    Chrissy is the sexiest rock chick ever, and I'm gay LOL
    Is it her swagger? Her breathy, gravelly voice? Her looks or the fact she could sing lyrics no 'good' girl would go near?
    'I Touch Myself' is a legendary song in it's own right.
    Thank you again guys. And yes, England may have invented time, but in Australia we invented some bloody good pub rock bands!! OH, and kangaroos!

    Fun fact: Chrissy Amphlett made a fantastic Judy Garland in the stage show The Boy From Oz, about Aussie Peter Allen, who married Liza Minnelli. Among his great songs were Tenterfield Saddler, I Still Call Australia Home, and his tribute to Garland, Quiet Please, There's a Lady on Stage. I Go to Rio, his breakthrough hit, is sooooo camp.

    Awesome. A double treat of Chrissie and the boys. Thanks for that lads. I really think part of Chrissie's charm is that she's a mature performer who knows exactly how to command the stage.
    While we're on the subject of Aussie women singers - check out Kasey Chambers cover of Lose yourself by Eminem. I 100% guarantee you will be knocked off your socks. Its a live version and she asked everyone who was filming on their phones to send in their video so she could load it up as there were no official cameras on hand. Its bloody stunning music.

    saw them 2 nights in a row, the pub venue was very quiet on first night, at one stage she lent forward for a moment and shot me a piercing look as she belted out a line... I fell in love.. and came back back the next night for more, it was busy but she was the same menacing beast, prowling and shooting looks into the audience... we had a great era in Oz.. not so much now.

    Awww, Chrissy, gone too soon.
    I remember hearing Chrissy in a radio interview where she related a story about her very first acting gig. Chrissy said it was only a short role, but she had to appear naked on stage, wearing only hair curlers in her pubic hair. She thought it was hilarious. That said so much about her, humble, unpretentious and possessing a wicked sense of humor.

    My favourite of the Aussie bands from that era. The had so many great songs, but they always kind of sounded alternative - never sounded like they fit into the mainstream.

      Their international success was really late in the game, after "I touch myself" became big in the states. Also aint's going to eat out my heart any more was the theme for the Buffy the vampire slayer movie, and probably got them some underground notice in the states.

    I won’t insult Chris by making suggestions on other tracks for Divinyls. He knows what he’s doing. Would love to see more of their stuff surface on the channel down the track, though.

  • @Kidrodeo1000
    @Kidrodeo1000 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    In a way Chrissie Amphlett was to the Divinyls the same as what Angus Young is to AC/DC. You know you’re going to a concert to see the Divinyls but really you are there to see Chrissie perform as only she can. When I was a young man growing up in Australia in the 70s and 80s, I saw the Divinyls live a few times and, speaking from personal experience, the Melbourne symphony orchestra could have been her backing band but the only performer I was interested in seeing was Chrissie. When you go to an AC/DC gig the person you really wanted to watch was Angus Young for pure entertainment value and, as such, the whole AC/DC live performance aspect is centred around his guitar theatrics. Loved The Divinyls and so sad that Chrissie will no longer grace the stages of this world. May she R.I.P.

    I’m 53 Chrissie was my first crush. She was mesmerising. When I saw them in a pub in Adelaide on a 40 degree day and they didn’t turn on the air conditioning. It was like a sauna. It was hell. In the toilets people were clogging the sinks with toilet paper so they could get some relief. But no one left. On stage Chrissie was saying “turn on the f@@king air conditioning “

    Divinyls were so good... and Chrissie was super, super charismatic. Pleasure and Pain was their first Top 40 hit in the U.S., then they had a major smash Top 10 hit with I Touch Myself. Check out Science Fiction or Sleeping Beauty. Great tracks!

    The Divinyls were a great live band I was lucky enough to see many times in the early eighties with Split Ends and Cold Chisel Dragon and many other Aussie bands of the early seventies onwards like Moby Dick Skyhooks Hush and many more but Chrissy was one of a hand full of female artists of that time Vale Chrissy

    If you get a chance, and if you are really Cold Chisel fans, have a listen to their song How many more times. It's one of their earlier tracks, I don't believe it was released as a single, but it will give you an idea of just how brilliant they were. If that doesn't convince you, I double dare you, love from Australia, keep up the good work

    You should have seen her live mid 80s. Our uni jad them play at the union club and there was like 50 ppl there on the grass 6ft in front of me. Up close she wasnt that pretty, and had a huge over bite. But she was sexy af and provocative and as a mid 20s guy you couldnt take you eyes off her. Def queen of ozzy rock. Fight me R.I.P Chrissy, always missed.

    In my mind Chrissy Amphlett deserves be be spoken in the same breath as Debbie Harry and Chrissie Hynde.

    Pity the sound quality is not so good. She was very much loved in oz, and in germany. You could spend another year on great 80s ozrock bands

    Growing up as a teenager in the Eighties, Chrissy was every straight schoolboy's erotic dream. How could she not be? Her sensuality, charisma and magnetism were matched by her incredible vocal technique, and she was backed by a top shelf band. Gone but never forgotten 💔

    She was actually quite withdrawn and not quite herself by the time she sang Only Lonely because of the lack of enthusiasm of the Audience and pretty much ruined her faith in herself and her music and in Australian Fans but it only lasted a week. If you watch again but look and listen to the Audience they are quite subdued, I saw the Divinyls no less than 20 times in their first 18 months as they first did many Gigs around Sydney Pubs and Kings Cross and after turning 15 yrs old I HAD to move to a quieter Aussie City where a big night is 3 beers at the local so off to Darwin I went and my Local was no longer a 5-minute walk to Oxford Street Kings Cross But I did miss amazing live bands Like this Hottie and other Bands like the Radiators and The Angels for a $2.50 admission But there were far too many Habits I was getting into and I was getting too bloody Old 😂

    I saw Divinyls at Homebake & at the time felt she looked like she didn't want to be there> Later I felt so ashamed for thinking she could have made a bigger effort when I heard she was in severe pain the whole day.
