Best live band I have ever seen PERIOD.
Live they are next level. So sorry will never see them In person again
It's hard to comprehend how far ahead of their time Midnight Oil were. In all respects, musically, politically, culturally, visually. One of the most important bands in the history of music worldwide for sure.
passion! These guys believed fully in their music and the power of the messages they were delivering...love the random audience guy who injected himself into the song and Peter just rolled with it :D
This track is delivered with such power and passion. It is brilliant. Thank you for the support and I hope you found our other midnight oil tracks as well
What a corker of a performance! And I don't mean mine! Thanks for having me on gentlemen was an honour and a pleasure, can't wait til this one ticks over 500 and you do some more Oils! Now, how about some Cold Chisel? or Hoodoo Gurus? INXS maybe? More please!
Hi Chris, you rockstar! It was a absolute pleasure to make this with you. We look forward to the day when we can sit down in the same room for real and share some musical tales. I do think it would be fun to explore some more Australian bands and maybe I have to start with those on channel 2 again! Have a great week and thanks again
Great job legend. Next time something from the Capital Theatre shows. No Time for Games!
Oooooo LOVE INXS! Love watching their live at Wembley concert…
@@TheThamesmen ever hear of Teramaze? Australian. Shades of Porcupine Tree, Pineapple Thief…..Try “Sleeping Man” or “I Wonder”
Ever hear of Teramaze, Chris? Australian. Don’t know if it’s your bag…,,,prog metal type……like Porcupine Tree..Pineapple Thief…
January 1985. I was there at this secret, invitation only (I got lucky) concert. It was really rather good... ;-)
Simulcast the following weekend, meaning simultaneous TV and FM radio.
Since then available on 'The Best of Both Worlds' DVD/CD set, which also includes their mind-boggling 1982 Capitol Theater in Sydney live show.
Love Midnight Oil. More Please : )
You got it!
Best live band I ever saw. By far.
None stop head banging from the first song when you see them live every time.
Rob Hirst one of the finest drummers in the world!@
Even in the rain!. Take care and thanks for being here, we never take it for granted
@@TheThamesmen "Why are you nailing the drumkit to the floor?"........ "You'll see... 😉".
Alex; you need to watch 'Midnight Oil - 1984' documovie to really 'get it' what shaped the Oils on stage and politically and by extension Peters time in politics. Link below 🔗 (in case it's blocked).

@@TheThamesmen It wasn't raining. It was actually a summer day in January 1985. Stand in Line was their final song at Goat Island. Rob Hirst used to pour water on his toms just before their last song to add a little something extra to his flamboyantly physical playing.

Loved this! Great musicians great song kick ass performance. Especially love no gimmicks , distraction no electroncs to hide behind just as straight ahead kick ass performance!!!!!!!!!
Just amazing energy and performance. It’s hard to capture them live and I think this video does it well
@@TheThamesmen On a side bar i usually put my phone in song mod and hit shuffle' today decided to play the album Tommy!!!
whoa what an experience. Its been a while and I had forgot how great that album was. Was really impressed with Keith Moon.
Wake up call to shake the dust off those old albums and rediscover the reason you bought them in the first place.
Cheers
Midnight Oil's songs have been covered by performers such as Pearl Jam (and frontman Eddie Vedder solo), U2, Patti Smith, The Killers, Imagine Dragons, Silverchair, Tom Morello (as The Nightwatchman), Billy Bragg and Anti-Flag.U2 singer Bono recorded a speech for Midnight Oil's ARIA Hall of Fame induction, sections of which aired intermittently. He recited the chorus lyrics of their song "Forgotten Years" and hailed the outfit as an "extraordinary" band whose music "brought people's differences together; not to resolve them, just to get them in the same room, up each other's noses"
Now that is all interesting I had not thought of exploring midnight oil covers. Thank you for being here and thank you for the contributions
Weren't 'The Killers' awesome at the AFL Grand Final!!! 'Forgotten Years' was a brilliant cover. th-cam.com/video/0wiTjU5yJYw/w-d-xo.html
70s/80s Aussie pub rock is definitely a magnificent thing. Happy to be seeing them one last time in March (covid permitting).
Australian bands have a very distinctive sound for some reason. It’s subtle but definitely they have their own thing
My Mum worked in the music industry when I was a kid from about five years old ..I must have been to a few hundred gigs by the time I was ten..crazy amazing times ..you could go to a pub on a Thursday night and see world class bands
Pure greatness, The Oils such a powerful band. Underappreciated Gem... Thank you guys I really enjoyed your reaction.
Our pleasure. Thank you for your support. We had a lot of fun making that video and it is a brilliant track. I hope you have found our other midnight oil videos
@@TheThamesmen now I know 👍💯 great! I really appreciate your kind profound thoughts.. Cheers
Well done Alex. We may not like or appreciate a band but sometimes we hear something we did not expect and kudos to you. Midnight Oil are, in my opinion, a voice that represented/confronted so many political, environmental and cultural norms throughout their career (which is not over as I am old enough to have listened to them in the 70's as a teenager and see them live again in 2022). Watch 20,000 Watt RSL to get a bit of an insight, the Exon live protest live in New York, the support and recognition of indigenous Australians, confronting the asbestos mining companies and subsequent deaths and illness of miners ... blah, blah, blah. I watched this concert live in 1985 and dance my ar$e off with my mates and Peter lol Like your channel too guys. Cheers from Australia
Thanks for the comic relief
Any time!
Great reaction to a solid Oils track ❤️👋
I love Midnight Oil! So glad to see the make the A channel! (Sorry Alex) Excellent work Chris and George! Definitely a banger!
Such a great track and we had real fun making that video. Hopefully we can do more in the future
Love it, thanks! Seriously, I've never seen this performance, absolutely EPIC!!
Glad you like it. It is an absolute classic performance. Thanks for the support
The whole concert was fantastic. Check out the other songs here on TH-cam from the Oils on Water show.
Greetings from Australia... so pleased that you promoted 'the oils'. They have been at the forefront of social political commentary and indigenous rights for ages. It was great seeing them perform in their 'sorry' t shirts at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. What about 'beds are burning', 'blue sky mine' or 'the dead heart'. Keep up the great work first Nightwish then Sabaton and now the Oils.... so love your international explorations.
Seems we have a similar taste in music! We are loving our journey exploring all these bands. I hope you have found our other midnight oil tracks as well
Oh thanx for this! Been a Midnight Oil fan for years! I still throw the albums on from time to time. Awesome band!
Our pleasure! Take care and thanks for being here, we never take it for granted
THANK YOU, CHRIS!! I absolutely love Midnight Oil and was lucky enough to see them a few times on their last tour here and they were just as brilliant as back in the day. I also appreciate how well you helped George skewer Alex! 😁 Looking forward to more MO in the future!
We need another 500 likes!
Just jumping on our valve wireless dial up Aussie Internet,(with backup pigeon post) to thank you guys for featuring our beloved Oils, a national institution in these parts. It would be nice to see some other reaction channels "discover" their back catalogue.
Peter Garrett's political career lasted for 9 years (2004 - 2013).
btw, the band have reformed and toured extensively until 2019, with Covid halting everything from 2020. They released a new single "Rising Seas" in 2021.
Looking forward to more, cheers from Sydney.
Thanks for the support and being here. Hope you saw out other Midnight Oil reactions? ( we did cover Riding Seas).
Chris is spot on! Brilliant song. Brilliant performance. Thank you Chris!
Chris is a top man and keeps us on track with sensible music choices. He also knows more than anyone we know!
I had the great fortune to see these guys live twice in the United States: once in 1993, and most “recently” in 2002.
If only they could play in the USA one more time I will be there
@@TheThamesmen Totally. But I don’t think it’s in their plans, unfortunately. I think they are performing the final shows of their career right now, and all in Australia.
@@MrDuneedon well understandable in the world we live in unfortunately
I remember Midnight Oil before they were famous, in a little downstairs bar called French's Tavern in Oxford Street in Sydney on a Thursday night. Fantastic band.
Now that is historic. How good were they at that point?
@@TheThamesmen I had never heard a tighter band. They were a class act from the get go.
Love this song. I have cassette tapes to prove it.🎉❤
He gave my mother a lovely, warm cuddle ❤ b4 she passed
Wonderful
As a roadie in the mid 80s I became deaf in my left ear. Fast forward to 2001 and I saw the Oils live. At the end of the show I heard a huge pop and my hearing was returned - Praise Be to Saint Peter Garrett.
(True story!)
Very cool
Make sure you go see the new doko out in a few weeks/months worldwide - Midnight Oil: The hardest line - just premiered to sell outs at the Sydney Film Festival - in fact it opened the 2-week festival!
Great track, first saw them around 83/84 great live band
Another great Aussie rock band of the time are Rose Tattoo,
The butcher and fast Eddie live is a great track
Wow that is the name I have not heard in a long time. Will have to check it out. Thank you very much
Well done boys. Oz's secret rock weapon MO, move over AC/DC...these lads effing ROCK!. Sadly on their last live tour, but we here have been blessed to see them live over 40 years
So wish I could see that tour. All the reports so far sound like it is a good one.
Love the Oils!
One of the finest and most exciting bands I ever saw live. Nine times in fact. Enjoy the humble pie!
Fun fact they have just release a new album and are on their ‘final’ tour! Still rocking hard with a message or two…😎🤘🔥
So sorry that we can’t see the final tour. It would be amazing if they could do any shows in the USA
Well done!
Thank you
Going off on a tangent here . . . speaking of Humble Pie, no idea if their is any video of that band, but "30 Days in the Hole" is a great song!
Midnight Oil were great, more reactions please.
Oh will have to check out humble pie. Good call Hopefully more Midnight Oil soon
Awesome! You won't find too many live rock performances that are better than this.
Couldn't agree more!
One of the best live video's ever I would say, you would enjoy the whole concert I'd bet. I'd like to add the sensational bass playing of Peter Gifford to the list of great musos in the band. That bass solo is stirring stuff.
I have seen them a couple of times they are just perfection as a live band
I think it was an inspired idea from Chris to have added to the students school curriculum the requirement to watch your channel, gentlemen. And moreover, hit the 'like' button
🤗 thinking of getting June 19, 2022 Midnight Oil tickets for NYC Hammerstein Ballroom! 🤯 May 1990, I'll never forget when they closed down NYC protesting Exxon Oil! 🥳 I had tickets for my Bday that month the weekend they played SNL! Adore them! 🥰🐰
George here, just one of my favorite bands and I have tickets to see them in LA and can’t wait
I remember when Beds are Burning and Dead heart came out. There was nothing like it on the radio. Like Men at Work meet a punkish AC/DC. I really love their 1993 album Earth and Sun and Moon album. It is one of those perfect gems that I got on a whim just because I like their stuff from Diesel and Dust
Where of the fair go for pharaoh?
Check out the 1982 live at the Capital Theatre Concert. Yeah!
Love them, I saw them for the first time in 1983 Brisbane Festival Hall, then in 1985 plus others, I still remember how good live they are, just brilliant
Seeing them live the few times I have has been a religious experience. They are so good
Great song by a great band. Peter Garret was an MP for 9 years.
That's sooooome time. Good on him!
Sat on the front bench as the Minister for the Environment. Not without a bit of controversy.
The concert was free to air, live at the time. All had access if they so chose. Fuk'n cool as.
Enjoyable.
:)
HEAH bloke with the glasses hold up if you said that in any Ozzie pub you would get punched, i know you where just messing around but b careful mate, love your show guys keep up the good work .
Here for the engagement, enjoy your holidays
Thanks
"Oils On The Water"
Watched it Live , ,With a bunch of mates drinking lashing of beer at my place, as it was live through our ABC (like BBC) network, and simulcast ( in "stereo! ;) ) Though their radio channel, Triple J
And as the muso , of course I had the best setup....
An old customer of mine did the live broadcast mix (Keith Walker) Literally, this was a pretty much it... Though they did release it later off the a multitrack recording... Im telling you ,, The bands that good... and so was the the sound.....
Watch the whole affair...
No one like the Oils....... which makes them even more special...
You switched places!! 😱. I think I would like Chris! 😁
Chris is awesome and if you read his comments he knows his sh*t!
@@TheThamesmen I like people who know their fecal matter! 😁
This is my _other_ favourite song, by my favourite band. They played it at their final tour gig in Brisbane, Queensland, Straya.
It's also the last song I ever played on my own radio show, just over 26 years ago.
Great link and thanks for sharing
Must do ..THE DEAD HEART @ concert in Toronto .. Top stuff
Would love to. Thanks for ideas!
The water was put on the drums by rob for the look with the lighting
Great live band, saw them lots since 1979
Thanks so much for being here and supporting us. Be well and have a fab day. G&A
Saw them in concert last Sunday at All Saints Winery. 37 years after the Oils on Water concert and they still sound amazing. And how relevant are the songs they sang back then today? Put Down That Weapon was my favourite from the night but I could have named a dozen more.
You lucky man
I just purchased their latest (and probably last) album and it's up there with their best work.....it's vintage Oils and a worthy addition to their legacy of great albums.
Well played Chris!
Darn you Chris. Cheers Alex.
Ahh, Peter Garratt... someone who really turned his Law degree into something useful!!!! But you are right in picking out the drummer as noteworthy. Rob Hirst is an astonishing drummer...! AND he wrote for the Oils. Privately do some research on 'The Backsliders'... his side hustle. I saw him in a Qld pub with a performance area of twice a normal lounge room over here... and from the first beat, he was concert volume!!! Half way through the gig, he proceeded to play a drum solo on EVERYTHING in the pub. He just wandered 'round playing window frames, mike stands, empty glasses, tables. It was a treat to be there!
Great choice !
It is a great track for sure. If you find a second channel there is some more midnight oil there. Thanks for the support
They are the best political band in the world, lead singer of U TWO said this band was his idol he had greatest respect for them national treasure in ozz
His hands where tied as it is in parliament
Many people talk about Peter Garrett the front man. But what about their drummer, Rob Hirst the drummer. One of the best drummers around.
Great guitar work 2.
good one Chris
Thanks for being here and supporting the channel. Hope you enjoyed the vid and more super soon!! See ya
I think I’ve heard one song of theirs that was played in the US back in the day. This strikes me as punk rock. And certainly a progenitor of thrash metal. Definitely not my bag (too frenetic) but I respect the talent of the players and the vocalist. The drummer reminded me of Dave Grohl for sure…..excellent! Yeah, it’s a banger
Try some of the other tracks this one was particularly upbeat and chosen for that reason.
The song you heard might of been Beds Are Burning
Peter was elected as an MHR in 2004 and retired from politics at the 2013 Federal election. So nine years as a Rep and 4 years as a minister.
Cheers!
He walks the walk for sure. Have to respect their passion
US forces my fave.
Yep that is a great track
Another great live track from the Oils is Hercules live in Montreal
Thanks I’ll check them Out
Great reaction, gents! You know what Rush fans are waiting for: 2112 official Vevo comic video with lyrics! don't worry if we can't see it for blocking reasons - as long as we can hear it. But you need to see the video to truly appreciate the story being told. Note: there is no complete live version - the song is 20m 38secs long. We are all waiting for this journey!
Added! Take care and thanks for being here, we never take it for granted

The Oils put water on the snare and used strobes to give that splash effect when Rob hit the skins.
Ooh. well that makes sense. Thanks for setting us straight.
I want to see Alex? EAT humble pie ! Midnight oil is a high energy band pricking our conscience towards making a better world for the greater good.
He is suitably chastised and has been a good sport about the whole thing!

I played in a support band for the Oils. Two AC 30s on max, couldn't hear a thing over the vocal monitors. When they came on stage Garrett wanted more volume. My ears rang for two weeks. Great show tho.

Exactly thank you for the support
Live, they were full of energy, but their music was great on the albums, too. IMO early Oils was their best musicianship, peaking with 10, 9, 8, ... They toned down a lot after that. Unfortunately, most people only know the Oils from their mid to later catalogue.
Wow, they sound amazing! Freddie Mercury/John Malkovich vibes from the singer😁
Glad you like it. Check out more for midnight oil because they have some great tracks
Thanks for that. Unfortunately, the Oils were the one Australian band I have never seen live. I'm forever sorry,
Is there an essential Midnight Oil album? the answer is YES. 10 to 1. This album with Back in Black by AC/DC and Cold Chisel "East" will show case what "Pub Rock" means to Australians.
4 years was right but the best thing is Peter Garrett jumped in and became a minister and went all the way in Fu--ing parliament. Let Bonno beat that.
I never listen to Oasis but, if I did, I'd turn it off to listen to this any day of the week
Seems a very sensible strategy particularly when it is one of our reaction videos!
Early stuff way better than new
FWIW, the beetroot on/in the burger, is not fresh. It can only be from a can, and so comes with a mild vinegar flavour.
And it absolutely makes the burger! Does make a mess though
@@TheThamesmen , yes - mess! We had a t.v. commercial some years ago, for a pre-wash stain remover. With a sequence of typical stains that we often get on tablecloths and clothes, it ended with a bloke saying, rather mildly,
"I've just been beetrooted."
