"To her Door". I consider Paul Kelly's songs to be a social commentary on the ordinary/ forgotten Australians who don't work in the cities and may be differently educated, trained or considered by society. A brilliant story teller who finds the humanity in the situations that he sings about.

I think Australians know the words of 'To Her Door' more than they do the national anthem. Also the live version of 'They thought I was asleep' Paul Kelly does with the Storm Water Boys is brilliant.

To her door is the song that inspired me to buy my first guitar!! After spending my life from the age of 6, listening to pretty much exclusively the Beatles until I was around 19, I always wanted to learn how to play guitar, but never thought I could sound like them!! Then I heard Paul Kelly interviewed on the radio when I was 21, and he played To Her Door solo, just an acoustic guitar. And I thought, "well f@ck, I can do that!!" The next day was a Saturday, and I was waiting at my local music store when it opened the next morning!! Been playing every since, 22 years now!! Play most of Paul Kelly's repertoire now, even had the chance to hang out with him for a while before a show in Albany, Western Australia. I had been playing How To Make Gravy using chords I found on the internet, which were close, but not quite right!! Was honored to have Paul show me the correct fingering!! Absolute legend of an artist!!

His whole catalogue is huge and brilliant, with different phases having a different vibe to it (rock, bluegrass, folky, electronic). His greatest skill is being able to sing from a variety of perspectives with such empathy (Gravy being an example).
    A couple of my favourites;
'Everything's turning to White' from the view of a wife whose husband does something that rocks her to her core.
'From little things, Big things grow' - co-written & sung with indigenous songwriting legend Kev Carmody, tells the biographical tale of Indigenous Land rights.
'Every Fucking City' - which is just a brilliant and hilarious tale of lost love and clueless wanderings.
I could go on and on there are literally hundreds - To Her door, Leaps & Bounds, Melting, Bradman, Our Sunshine, etc etc - but where to I stop. Any one of those 3 will give you just a little more insight. Hope you can check him out some more.

Your overkill week reminds me of the album curated by Andrew Denton called ‘Stairways to Heaven’ where he got various artists to do their own version of the song, including a pre-prison performance by Rolf Harris with wobble board. Another popular Paul Kelly song is Leaps and Bounds.

Paul Kelly used to do an A to Z tour with 100 different songs over 4 nights. The first night he performed his songs that started with the letters A to G, night 2 H to M etc. I was lucky enough to go to all 4 nights when he performed this in Dublin. For his next song there are so many great choices You can put your shoes under my bed, Darling it hurts, Leaps and Bounds, If I could start again today but a favourite is a little played track Until Death Do Them Part which he wrote about a wedding for a play. It is so good I got a wedding singer to learn it for my own wedding in Ireland.

Paul Kelly is the poet of every Australian - 1980s onwards. Back in the day the poets covered rural pre-1920's life, but we were overdue for a modern one.

"To Her Door" is one of his biggest hits, and a great emotional story-song. One of my personal favorites, but maybe won't quite hit as well for you if you don't have background with AFL / the MCG / Melbourne, is "Leaps and Bounds" . Also, speaking of Overkill (I assume you mean Motorhead) - check out the Men at Work song Overkill - superb

Paul Kelly songs are a part of Australia's DNA. They are not only a reflection of Australian culture at that time but an essential part of it. Three songs that immediately come to mind are "Before Too Long", "To Her Door", and "Leaps and Bounds".
I was more into bands like Depeche Mode, The Cure, and Duran Duran at the time so I didn't ever really think about his music. It was just songs that I heard on the radio all of the time. I appreciate his talent a lot more in retrospect. His songs feel incredibly nostalgic to me.

Paul Kelly's songs are so relateable to so many everyman/woman people of all situations and backgrounds and shared experiences throughout most lives but from different view points or nuanced differenty.
The biggest overall nuance is that of being out of Australia and recognising our own familiar culture, situations, landscapes and streetscapes ringing through the whole of it. I feel it is because the friendly, observant man himself has been able to personally relate to the many people he has encountered in his travels and locations in which he has lived. Also being a good listener, he can relate situations other people have lived and either suffered or laughed through. He can even tell a story from a woman's point of view. I THINK I heard him say that, in an interview at one time, that he didn't mind being a man singing songs from a woman's viewpoint....and I say, because he gets it right, women love to hear them.
So my suggestion for a highly emotive and wildly vocal and instrumental performance is the rendition of SWEET GUY.

Paul Kelly does pop, rock, folk, but has also recorded an album of Bluegrass music, an album of great poems set to orchestral music, and an albums based on Shakespeare's sonnets. There is also live album with Tim Finn of Crowded House where they sing each others songs. He's also published an anthology of his personal favourite poems. Just does whatever he likes really.

I couldn't get the part of the chorus "I lost my shirt, I pawned my rings" when I first heard this back when it was released. The original has the harmonica at the beginning. Here he uses hi svoice to perform that part. Paul Kelly is one of Australia's best story tellers.
You lads seem to be loving the 70's/80's Aussie pub rock. Give the Hunters and Collectors a go too. "Say Goodbye" & "When The River Runs Dry" are my favourites. "Say Goodbye" has a line that only a bunch of drunk Aussie blokes in a pub could scream "You don't make me feel like i"m a women anymore" hah!
Love the show lads. Keep going to the 100k.

I highly recommend two less upbeat but masterful and quintessential Paul Kelly songs, When I First Met Your Ma and Everything's Turning to White. The first is a gorgeous song about the all-engulfing rush of finding the love of your life juxtaposed with the sentiment of how that love can disappear. It was written for his son to explain his parents' divorce, but is still yet a beautiful love song. The second is based on Raymond Carver's short story "So Much Water So Close to Home" (also a lyrical refrain in the song) and is gut-wrenching and haunting.

Like everyone else has said, has to be 'To Her Door'. PK has stated that he sees the protagonist in To Her Door to be Joe, the same protagonist who's writing the letter home from prison in How To Make Gravy.
Again reiterating many others, with a few extra favourites of mine:
From Little Things, Big Things Grow - this is his most Dylan-esque in my opinion, his version of a protest song, an important song to Australians.
Meet Me in The Middle of The Air - beautiful a cappella, reminds me of James Taylor's That Lonesome Road
Darling it Hurts - another good upbeat track
    Sydney from a 747 - just a great track
Leaps and Bounds - will always be a favourite of Melburnians, very specific local references
Every F**king City - the Aussie backpacking classic, just fun.

All the usual … To Her Door, Before Too Long, From Little Things Big Things Grow, Leaps and Bounds … All great.
Also listen to “Bradman”. An Aussie legend singing about an Aussie legend!

    Great work again guys.
This is a beauty as well:
“If I Could Start Today Again”
    Paul Kelly
Not sure if you’ve done a reaction to “Hunters & Collectors,” …. noiseworks, sonnyboys, hilltop hoods, Australian crawl, Daryl braithwaite (sherbet), choirboys, are some goodies as well.
Though it’s incredible the amount of ground you both have covered ⁉️👏👏👏

Awesome to do this - the one thing the live version lacks compared to the studio recording is the harmonica - its just electric :)

Thanks for this fellas, but TBH this version is not quite up there with the studio version. Still great but.
If you like his more 'pop' stuff, 'Darling it hurts' is a great banger with a very dark theme. Well worth a listen. And if you play Leaps and Bounds, you'll have every expat Melburnian in tears.
Btw, the drummer is the great Peter 'Lucky' Luscombe.

This is a great song in its context. It was on the soundtrack for the Yahoo Serious movie "Young Einstein". The song worked really well with the theme of the movie and captured Yahoo Serious' character perfectly. I'm not sure that the song would be as popular without that soundtrack connection.
Paul Kelly has a large catalogue and is a fine songwriter and performer. However, to be honest, Kelly isn't my cup of tea. I totally respect what he does, and he has some wonderful and important songs, he is a much-loved Australian icon. But in truth, I have never been motivated to buy one of his albums (that's un-Australian).
I think the Overkill week is a ripper idea. I am not so strong on the Overkill cover week though; I don't know if you would find five quality covers of the song to make an effective week.
    Keep the good stuff coming.

Sheesh Len, go buy Songs From the South (greatest hits) play it, and then realise you know and do in fact enjoy all of those songs. And I think there's a reasonable number of us who knew this song without having seen the movie, it was a great soundtrack though! No pressure really on what you like and don't, it just makes me feel like you're missing out.

@@christhecurator Chris, I have come to appreciate Paul Kelly as my musical tastes have become more mature and more expansive. However, when I was younger apart from "To Her door", I was never really taken on a journey by him. Most likely it had something to do with my friends never being into his music either. We are, after all, a product of our environment.
If it helps, I do like a good chunk of his music now, but still don't own an album. As I said, I recognise his artistry and sublime songwriting, but sometimes I find his diction and nasal twang a bit much for me. If I have to listen too hard for what is being sung, I tend to zone out a little.

    My recommendations for Paul Kelly:
Deeper Water (which I believe you already did?)
    Darling It Hurts
    Sweet Guy
    Love Never Runs On Time
    There’s a couple of ideas

Ok, Paul Kelly tunes to give a good overview!! Everything's Turning To White, Bradman, Deeper Water, From Little Things Big Things Grow, Our Sunshine, Every F@#king City, I could go on and on!! You have done artist weeks, you could do a Paul Kelly month, and still barely scratch the surface of his talent!!
