Baked beans on toast is the best. It;s a proper British working class breakfast. This song is a love letter to working class family life in Britain, especially in the seventies and eighties.
I was a Jr in HS when this came out in America. We all loved this. These guys wete zany but such great musicians. And this song hits home. I have 6 brothers and I remember my Dads friends asking him if he was trying to grow his own football team. 😂 God bless and Happy New Year from Ky
"Our house" was a council house. Back in the days when working-class people could live in affordable housing before the billionnaires took control of everything.
Never had it for breakfast, but lunch or dinner....or tea....definitely - and the beans are just plain old haricot beans in tomato sauce, like Heinz Beans, etc - it was a staple during rationing in WW2 when meat was scarce.
You don't have to be English to appreciate the lyrics. "...Our mum she's so house-proud. Nothing ever slows her down and a mess is not allowed". That was Mom, for sure. ✌😆🍻
The algo has blessed me with this reaction vid!! You are so lovely and these selections are excellent. To answer your last question: none of the Madness members were siblings, though they were all friends (and basically just kids when they hit it big) from the same town, Camden. The piano player and primary songwriter, Mike Barston, did grow up in a similar looking house with his musician siblings so this may be based on that experience. Good hunch on your part!
Loved this, Madness are such a uniquely English vibe, songs like this just make you smile, in fact all their songs do, even ones with a more serious message like Embarrassment (superb song about mixed relationships) and One Better Day (equally brilliant song on homelessness) are done with humour. Thank you Maddy for reacting to Our House, its made my morning!
Wow!!! I was like 16 when this first aired... Back then MTV actually showed video's all day long, though I watched this on Hot Tracks(7 Abc) and Friday Night Videos(4 Nbc) in NYC back in 1983 (broadcast tv). Not every one had access to cable tv. Our neighborhood was among the last in the city to get cable... After a 6 year hiatus from NY (military and living in VA) I had moved back and was able to get cable in that area in NY 1992. A first and a learning experience for me.
Madness were absolutely HUGE in the UK in the early/mid 80s. Loads of Number 1s. Guy at the start is saying 'Have you seen our house?' (pronounced like 'arr ouse')
this song became a hit when it came out, especially on Canadian radio and video TV shows of the time. It's a great song that I still enjoy listening to today.
Merry Christmas Maddy, hope you have a great time 🎅 🎁 🎄 yes the beans on toast are baked beans, here in UK we eat it when we have no time/can’t be bothered to cook anything better or if we have not got the shopping in!
Madness was a great ska band. If you're not familiar with ska - it's a fusion of reggae and British pop. There were underground ska scenes in the UK in the late 70s and it spread to the US by the early 80's. Other great ska bands include: The Specials, The English Beat, Bad Manners, Selecter, and for a cool American ska band - try the Kyber Rifles. Thanks for your reactions - I always enjoy them.
It's amazing how nostalgic that I get over this song which is indeed very much about nostalgia. Summer of 83 was just incredible and so many various styles of music taking place. Love your reaction! You look beautiful and Merry Christmas!!!
Merry Christmas Maddy! Thank you for reacting to this song. It brings back memories of childhood. My parents were born in Cuba. My Dad knew English, but wouldn't speak it often, but I remember him singing the chorus of this song! He died in 2020 of Alzheimer's
Baggy Trousers Driving in my car Uncle Sam And my personal favourite - House of fun (all about trying to buy your first pack of condoms in the chemist without saying condom)
Heinz Baked Beans on Toast-it is an amazing taste, in spite of the apperance. Try it & you will probably really enjoy it, most Americans & Canadians do when they give it a go.
Since I played in bands in the London music scene I got to know some of these guys. Good people and fun to be around. I got home from a gig wearing Lee (the sax player)'s hat covered in talcum powder for some reason. Drinks were involved to explain the hazyness.
A belated Merry Christmas Maddy.. Baked Beans on Toast is also a popular Aussie breakfast, baked beans in tomato sauce or ham sauce on toast with cheese and eggs and sausages or even black pudding occasionally was a pretty staple diet growing up in Australia 🇦🇺 Dave
Best beans on toast! Toast white bread and butter with real butter. Cook beans and place on top of toast and grate plenty of mature cheddar cheese on top :)
Our House entered the UK Top 40 on the 27th November 1982 and peaked at no.5. In 82, when I was 17, I saw these guys do this song on SNL, and ran out the next day to buy the album. They’ve been in my rotation ever since. (Those guys in the video are in their 60s now…and so am I)
Oh jeez. I first heard this at 17. Just before I joined the Navy. Sounds like everybody's house. Get in the Chevelle take a cruise to San Francisco. Get home ....how I don't know how. Eat spam for breakfast. Lol
madsy, hope you read this, this was a time when there was a switch in music, during the 70''s was mod's rockers and skin head's, the mod's and rocker scene had died off abit, but the skin heads were still around, there were a few groups, madness, the specials and a few others, that were sort of in the middle, toned down dress code from the skin heads, music was changing, some of the dress code, the dr martin boots, the cromby coat, were part of the skin head ers, but the music was changing, then you had what we called in our area, the smothies, different around the country due to the slang nw music was coming out, new dress codes, flight jackets, shoulder pads for the ladies, the hair styles, the new wave, music was changing, its was also the end of the disco era we didnt have mobiles or atuff, we watch on music channels, and bought the record or the dvd video, many made videos in the 80's, biggest one being mj and thriller, also, with the video recorder, came movies, that you could not watch on TV but buy or rent. 18 plus horrors, and other stuff, the music changed being more balads, that heavy songs, the fashin and the songs were really coming from america, through the 80's, with shows like the fonzz, dalas, and so on,
Madness performed Our House at Buckingham Palace for one of Queen Elizabeth’s jubilee celebrations, with a row of terraced houses projected onto the palace. [edit] There’s video on TH-cam th-cam.com/video/tU7tR6ZDFW4/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ULV9sJ3ONkdQZIyV
-He's saying "Have you seen Our House".... -It's Heinz beans, kind of like baked beans, but definitely not like we eat them in U.S.... -No, they're not related....
So which one was ares then? Like Madness i am also from London and we love our beaked beans on toast but you have to grate some cheese on top to make it proper. i'm Lee Marvin just thinking about it!
Madness were a breath of fresh air in the troubled 80's. Thanks for keeping the music alive.

"Our house" was a council house. Back in the days when working-class people could live in affordable housing before the billionnaires took control of everything.
@sweetnightmares2498 you mean when Socialism forced the working poor into awful slums.
Breakfast? Don't you mean breakfast, dinner, or tea (not all on the same day mind you)?!!!
"One Step Beyond" is a banger from Madness. I got to see them at Bond's in NYC. It was the moment I learned to let go and dance my asp off.
"It Must Be Love" is another favorite Madness song.
He was asking “have you seen our house” at the start of the video.
Yeah, I was stunned she didn't understand that
The joke is that it can be heard as "our ass" with the english accent :)
@ I never thought of that, good show!
Love Madness.......playing on the roof of Buck House is a must watch.....
This was huge in my junior school in the 80s. Several people had black canvas school bags with the big white Madness M, crowns, and boots on them
This video introduced the US to Madness and this song which became a top 40 hit thanks to MTV
yup! Back in 83
The algo has blessed me with this reaction vid!! You are so lovely and these selections are excellent.

At the beginning, he's asking, "Have you seen our 'ouse?" (Our House)
The British prefer Heinz Beans, also called Heinz Beanz, in a light blue can.
Loved this, Madness are such a uniquely English vibe, songs like this just make you smile, in fact all their songs do, even ones with a more serious message like Embarrassment (superb song about mixed relationships) and One Better Day (equally brilliant song on homelessness) are done with humour. There are several Monty Python references in this video, especially the Gumbies....😂
nah, monty python and this were referencing those guys
...and the Village Idiot head coverings in the pool. (The Village Idiot skit was 1969 for anyone wondering who came first.)
Wow!!! I was like 16 when this first aired... What a fun memory! Thanks Maddy, and have a beautiful Christmas love ❤
LOVE THIS SONG! The 80's had such a unique flavor.
Look at the charts in 1980 Skinhead,, Heavy Metal, rockabillies, Electropop, quaint English pop, Reggae. Teddy boys.
Wow, so many memories, thanks Maddy ❤
Any time!
Madness were absolutely HUGE in the UK in the early/mid 80s. Loads of Number 1s.

They were a popular and unique band that got lots of airplay, even in the US. Good to here it again.
Tis from a time when artists actually knew how to play instruments. No computers here I tell ya. Love from Norway Maddy.
That was one of the few pop songs from back then that truly got to me.
❤️
this song became a hit when it came out, especially on Canadian radio and video TV shows of the time.
Be Good Johnny by Men at Work is a great song that you should react to.
My favorite Madness song is "The Sun and the Rain", even play it on my guitar.

Great song request. I haven't heard this for years. Love this song... and your channel. Keep up the grind my dear.

Baked beans are haricot beans but they are really just texture, the important flavour is tomato sauce which is basically tomatoes and sugar
Early 80's MTV was the best music
Merry Christmas Maddy
Same to you!
None of them were related-just friends. They were the biggest band in the UK in the 1980's-huge from 1979-1984 & are still touring.
Love this song. other sharp Knives are available.
Pan cooked baked beans from tins are much less watery than their modern microwaveable plastic carton counterparts.
I'm going to see them in July. At the Eden Poject. Looking forward to it😊
Merry Christmas 🎄🎁
Same to you!
Beans on toast are the best I miss the UK been in Canada over 20yrs…….soon to retire then going home

Yep! baked beans in tomato sauce .

Beans on toast are an English staple even though they are probably Heinz Baked Beans; yummy!
I would like to try, I’m curious lol
House of Fun. 😅
Baked beans in the UK are haricot beans in a sweet tomato sauce.
Ahhh
This was massive in the UK in the 80's. Madness and Adam and the Ants.... 1981? 1982?
Baked Beans in tomato sauce are usually Cannellini beans.
Ooooh!!
