The suprise band has paid off for me a few times. About 20 years ago the hoodoo gurus were reuniting for the BDO and were the brilliant suprise the Friday night before they played a hell of a gig at the Blaxland inn
Often bands will do one gig "incognito" to try out new material. If they don't advertise their presence using their real name, they get honest appreciation of their music without the hype of what they are known for. Cold Chisel performed a few gigs as The Barking Spiders.
"Better to die on your feet then live on your knees." Powerful and Passionate words right there, could be speaking about now in many ways. Oils fan since 1979 when I bought Head Injuries.
A trip to Australia to see The Oils would be a sound investment I promise you. They are STILL one of the most ferocious and mighty live act that have ever walked the earth.
Ever seen Australia? We had the last laugh, tea leafs or not this is the place to be. And happy to say as a 19-20 in the 80's in aus I got to see the oils a few times, they do a great show.
They put a lot of energy and fun into their live shows. The studio version of this same song is superb, a highlight on an album of solid gems, but the live version must have been a real sight to see for those lucky enough to be present.
That whole gig was insanely awesome. I was 14/15 years old when it first aired and watched it on tv and recorded it onto a vhs. When it came out on dvd it had been edited down a bit but was still incredible. Now the songs are all on TH-cam we can revisit them anytime and it’s still fantastic. Best of Both Worlds and Read About It are relentless and the final song of the show, Stand in Line, is one of the hallmark versions of that song from their late 70s/early 80s repertoire. It was one of the encore songs in most of their shows for many years.
I can only imagine and I should probably check out any other videos on TH-cam if I can find them. I was in Sydney in 85 and it was a magic time but I didn’t see that show
@@TheThamesmenToo Agree with the comment above. To me, Stand in Line is the standout song from this concert. I’ve watched it quite a lot in the last few months (lockdown does that to you). Saw them in 1991 at the Sydney Showground and Rob Hirst killed it on the drums. He had a corrugated iron water tank on stage and was playing it during some songs. Awesome. To me, he is the greatest drummer that I have seen.
This concert was on Goat island in the middle of Sydney harbour. The people there had all won tickets from a local radio station. I didn't win a ticket but wasn't going to let that hold me back. A mate and I swam across from Simmons Point reserve and got smuggled into the concert. Great concert but the swim back in the pitch black was a bit dodgy.
Jim Moginie and Rob Hirst have been playing together since 1972. By 1976 Peter Garrett and Martin Rotsey were in the band and their first album came out in 1978.
@@TheThamesmenToo Yeah their first album came out in 1978, the Blue Meanie album, followed by Head Injuries, which has their best song "live" in my opinion on it, "Stand In Line", which is a true fan favourite. A mongrel of a song. Power and the Passion, yes i still love the song if played live, in the moment, but it's not one i would listen to on a regular basis. AWESOME Guys! The 80's Australian music scene was brilliant and Oils where there with some Banging songs. Just as well I can only hit the "Like" button once LoL Great choice George!

Saw Midnight Oil at FESTIVAL HALL in 80s (if anyone knows Melbourne). 'Power and the Passion' talks about the Whitlam Aust Federal Govt dismissal by Queen's representative in 1975 & Pine Gap is secret US spy base in remote Australia. It relates the general peoples' complacency/apathy at the time and how we let things happen to us without questioning because of preocupation of beach, sporting, TV and pub life. Songs like this sparked a growing awakening, self-education, curiosity with increased environment/humanitarian movement/awareness that happened in the 80s.
Excellent! Peter Garret is awesome. The way he dances is like a rock 'n' roll Frankenstein! (I mean that as a compliment). One of my favorite Oil songs. The band was killing it too!!!!
Very proud of my convict heritage, and lucky to be an Aussie growing up to all the Aussie talent, we were lucky, we could here all the music from around the world as well as our own homegrown talent which the rest of the world missed out on -until now with reaction channels all the rage atm. Thanks guys.
Saw these blokes at the Bondi Lifesavers - we were right up the front, my eardrums got blown out, I swear and when Peter Garrett started his Frankenstein dance i got covered from head to foot in HIS sweat - hubby was such a huge fan he told me not to wipe it off 😂😂😂
The Oils. One of our greatest bands. A bunch of blokes with university degrees who could blow the roof off. Their lead singer, Peter Garrett actually served in federal government and was appointed Minister of Education in 2010.

My friends and I were fans of Midnight Oil from the 70's and saw them live here in Sydney quite a lot. By 1985 we hadn't seen them in a few years, and when we did my mother said we were "trying to relive our youth" hahaha
The amount of time They have been around and still consistently good is amazing. Last saw him live in LA about four years ago and they were as good as ever.
Came here from the main channel. This is my favourite Midnight Oil track & one of my all-time top ten tracks ever - though I have to say the original recorded version is edgier and more passionate. Thanks for featuring it ☺️

Thank you for your support appreciate it. In fact we had so much support on this track that we will be doing more midnight oil on the main channel. Video coming soon
I happened to be at Blues Point (on the north shore of the harbour) completely randomly that afternoon, and this familiar noise floated across the water...I was 19yo and was like, "Holy crap, that's the Oils!" And so it was 😂
My ancestors paid to come out here between the 1850's and 1890's. They made the right decision escaping your wonderful weather. No convicts in my family tree.
@@TheThamesmenToo This was a free concert put on by The Australian Broadcasting Commission (ABC) for the tenth birthday of their Youth network Radio station, 2JJ (Now TripleJ on the FM Dial) The Station got their listeners to phone in when they played an Oils song and callers would get tickets to the concert. The concert was simulcast on both ABC Radio and Television, all around Australia. which is where I saw it, on TV in a little seaside village in country Victoria. From what I was told at the time, Midnight Oil played for free, as a thank you to The ABC and 2JJ for giving them their start when the commercial stations didn't want to know them.
@@TheThamesmenToo Thanks so much. Me too. Our borders (Western Aust.) are opening up in Feb so first time I'll have to where a mask since pandemic started. Fingers crossed it doesn't get cancelled all together. Damn you Omicron.
Talk about a mixed bag. Loved the comparison to the Clash and B-52s, but then to say it was empty. Made me re watch it, and honestly I'm starting to think Alex makes his tea in the microwave! And great grandpa was a horse thief so put some respect in your voice! I'd still love to see more Oils if you're up for it George, or Gurus. I'll add a couple of my fave Oils songs below shortly for YOUR enjoyment. Great video gents, more please!
Wow those are two great versions. In particular the short memory is absolutely blinding. Loved it. Thanks for sharing [if you didn’t guess it was George here!] Very respectable profession is Horse Thief. It could have been City Trader
I saw my first Midnight Oil concert in a small town called Wagga in the 1990's. They were supported by The Living End, who blew the house down in the opening act. Then the Oils came on and absolutely lifted the roof. They would have been in their fifties then, playing in front of a uni crowd in their early twenties. But they absolutely smashed it.
George, if you really want to see the them in full flight check out their full concert 1982 Capitol Theatre recorded for 2JJ radio station. Now that is the epitome Oils going off.
I'll add my voice to Daniel's - the Live at the Capitol concert is a blistering concert. Pretty well all the concert is on TH-cam I think: start with the opening number, Only the Strong. I promise that you'll never have seen any band producing more energy and intensity on stage. And in every case, read the lyrics, which are deadly serious. This is an extraordinary performance. Also, search for their appearance on Jool Holland's Up Late show. They sing two songs there: My Country, and Truganini. Forgive me, there's something about the mighty Peter Garrett calling out in the middle of the former to let the Union Jack burn, while singing to a British audience!
🤗 Pete was huge & commanding on some of those small NYC stages from those early shows. 🥰 May get a June 19, 2022 ticket to see MO at Hammerstein in NYC. ☺️🐰
My mate and I were fishing at the opera house that day we heard the warm up. Left our rods and nicked a row boat that was tied up at the dock 🤣 ended up at THE BEST GIG I EVER SAW . 😎🇦🇺👍 Put the boat back and the rods were still there… Sadly wouldn’t be today . But saw them on the last tour too still brilliant. Deep dive early oils you won’t regret it.
My first favourite - and still sentimental favourite - song by my old sentimental favourite band. Am bittersweet about the final tour, as it's after many years in hibernation. Their last shows have been better than I hoped - harder when necessary, more beautiful and delicate where required, and covering their entire career. Yes, I genuinely dance like Garrett - and at gigs with many other bands too. 😄
I’m with you, George! I would absolutely fly down to Aus to see them. My friend Colin already has tickets and I don’t recall ever being so envious! I’m hoping they announce a US tour, but if not… Alex, if you really want a cashmere hat, I can knit you one. You gotta buy the yarn, though!
@@Art-fl8jn I saw Peter Garrett three times on their last USA tour and he was AMAZING! The same energy, his voice was fabulous and he looked like he was truly enjoying himself. Definitely in my top concert experiences!
You said the Oils don't sound like their location, where have you been? From the 70s onward they have been synonymous with Australian rock... They played the closing ceremony of the Sydney Olympics....
Peter Garrett, AM, was an MP for 9 years (2004-2013). The Oils' music was always political, and he put his money where his mouth is and actually ran for election. I don't necessarily agree with all his politics, but some sentiments are truly bi-partisan: "Better to die on your feet than to live on your knees." And I love most of their songs. Check out: Blue Sky Mine, Forgotten Years, King of the Mountain, US Forces, Hercules, Short Memory, Read About It, Gunbarrel Highway, The Dead Heart, Bullroarer and Warakurna - just to name a few of my faves, but truth be told most of their stuff is great.
I was at an Oils concert at The Spit (Gold Coast) in '92 and they were fair dinkum GOING OFF! Halfway through Power and the Passion, Garrett stops and brings everything to a halt. Fans were surging towards the stage and in danger of getting crushed. Pete says, 'Hey people, so no one gets hurt, I need everyone to take a big step back'. As one, the crowd took a big step back...The big unit commanded respect.
The Oils were awesome....There is another song everybody loves called Beds Are Burning...Peter Garrett the lead singer ended up becoming a Federal politician by the way for the Labor Party..
Pre-1984 Midnight Oil was the best to watch and listen to. They were so raw and energetic. Once Peter Garrett became a Christian, they started mellowing out. Their greatest live shows are from the era of the Capitol Tour - "No Time For Games" and "I don't want to be the one" were just brilliant. I wish I was a about 4-5 years older to fully appreciate that era of theirs.
More subscribers means more midnight oil, i'll agree to that any day, i have to tell you midnight oil have been blowing the roofs off pubs and clubs since 1978 do yourselves a favour and research the oils, and listen to there albums from the first to the latest, you will fall in love as i did.
@@TheThamesmenToo Yes I think they reverted to just corporate shows in the US in the last decade. Glad I saw them with their 5 members early & 4 members later. Also glad you Thames guys like/react to so much Aussie music. Keep it up bros.
A not commonly known fact ,Rob Hurst hits the drums so hard ,they screw them to the floor ,I recommend, anyone who enjoys this ,they check out the whole concert ,it's called midnight oil ,oils on the water.
Jimmy Sharman's Boxers is the must see track from this concert. If you thought the last minute of Power and the Passion was good, you will be blown away by the last 3 mins of this. Powerful and emotional vocals and the crescendo of horns and guitars is sensational. Turn it up loud.
Saw them at Selina's at the Coogee Bay Hotel in '86-ish....the most powerful performance I have ever witnessed. Amazing band. Hirst's drumming is exceptional.

2 things,.. I've got my tickets for next year and am looking forward to seeing them. My wifes great great great grandmother was sent out here on the first fleet as a convict for stealing fabric. Initially sentenced to death but commuted to 7 yrs in the colonies. She never went back.

So jealous. I hope you have an amazing show it will be an historic tour
@@TheThamesmenToo Thanks so much. Me too. Our borders (Western Aust.) are opening up in Feb so first time I'll have to where a mask since pandemic started. Fingers crossed it doesn't get cancelled all together. Damn you Omicron.
Oils on Water is a great concert film. It was rereleased a couple of years ago.
Will have to watch whole thing. Thanks
Peter Garrett is now a member of Parliment in Australia either as an Independent or a member of the Green Party
Think not any more
Talk about a mixed bag.
Short Memory - th-cam.com/video/fC82jR6FSoM/w-d-xo.html
US Forces - th-cam.com/video/w29r322jqlY/w-d-xo.html
Enjoy!
Wow those are two great versions. In particular the short memory is absolutely blinding. Loved it. Thanks for sharing [if you didn’t guess it was George here!]
Very respectable profession is Horse Thief.
How awesome. You are damn lucky!
Love the 10 to 1 album. Oils rock…👍🏻🇦🇺
Really do. More soon on main channel
George, if you really want to see the them in full flight check out their full concert 1982 Capitol Theatre recorded for 2JJ radio station. Now that is the epitome Oils going off.
Perfect. Thank you for guidance. Will check it out. Maybe if we can get the 500 likes we can get to do some
Of it on the channel!
Check out Wanda Beach as well! AMAZING! 🖐🎼💖
Wannda beach live early eighties look it up
I'll add my voice to Daniel's - the Live at the Capitol concert is a blistering concert.
“It’s better to die on your feet than live on your knees”
Very relevant lyric living in Melbourne the most locked down city in the world.
with those out and about risking killing those with more sense.
True everywhere currently! World gone mad. Hope you are safe and well
🤗 Pete was huge & commanding on some of those small NYC stages from those early shows. 🥰 May get a June 19, 2022 ticket to see MO at Hammerstein in NYC. ☺️🐰
Brilliant. I have tickets for here in LA. Cant wait
My mate and I were fishing at the opera house that day we heard the warm up. Left our rods and nicked a row boat that was tied up at the dock 🤣 ended up at THE BEST GIG I EVER SAW . 😎🇦🇺👍
Put the boat back and the rods were still there…
Sadly wouldn’t be today . But saw them on the last tour too still brilliant. Deep dive early oils you won’t regret it.
I love put down that weapon. So relevant today
Unfortunately true
What an Awesome live Version fantastic.👊😁👏👏👏👏😊🤘 thank you.
Thank you for your support we really appreciate it
Fantastic My friend
Beds are Burning is my favourite Oils song.
That is a great one of course
My first favourite - and still sentimental favourite - song by my old sentimental favourite band. Am bittersweet about the final tour, as it's after many years in hibernation. Their last shows have been better than I hoped - harder when necessary, more beautiful and delicate where required, and covering their entire career.
Yes, I genuinely dance like Garrett - and at gigs with many other bands too. 😄
Good on you. Always dance like no one is watching.
Best and most powerful live band in the world. The Oils are just a force of their own.
So sad that it is the last tour coming up
Saw these guy’s in the 80s could not believe the energy they created never had that feeling from any other band.
Saw them last week and still have it!
Not quite the start of Midnight Oil. They formed in 1977 on Sydney’s Northern Beaches.
It is an amazing long history
Special😍
love that you don't interrupt the song like other Reactors. As previously said review Stand In Line from same show...effing insane
Well we want to listen to the music! Thanks for the recommendation most helpful
I’m with you, George! I would absolutely fly down to Aus to see them. My friend Colin already has tickets and I don’t recall ever being so envious! I’m hoping they announce a US tour, but if not…
Alex, if you really want a cashmere hat, I can knit you one. You gotta buy the yarn, though!
Unfortunately I don’t think we will get the 500 likes! So I doubt Alex will have an excuse to eat a hat!
@@TheThamesmenToo I may just have to stack the deck, then…
Peter would be over 60yo now. Won't have the same energy
@@Art-fl8jn I saw Peter Garrett three times on their last USA tour and he was AMAZING! The same energy, his voice was fabulous and he looked like he was truly enjoying himself. Definitely in my top concert experiences!
Hey guys great song choice, the oils are legendary.
Can you check out another local Australian band called the living end. Song all torn down
Thank you for the support we appreciate you being here and thank you for the suggestion
This looks incredible!!!
I love the Oils concerts where they spin the chocolate wheel and sing whatever song it lands on.... So cool.
Amazing they know their material so well. Not many could do that
waiting on next video📍
Very nice😋👏
You said the Oils don't sound like their location, where have you been? From the 70s onward they have been synonymous with Australian rock... They played the closing ceremony of the Sydney Olympics....
Off course they are Australian Royalty but They are bigger than that I think was the point
Peter Garrett, AM, was an MP for 9 years (2004-2013). The Oils' music was always political, and he put his money where his mouth is and actually ran for election.
I don't necessarily agree with all his politics, but some sentiments are truly bi-partisan: "Better to die on your feet than to live on your knees."
And I love most of their songs.
George here. Love them and have for years. Seeing them in June in LA and can’t wait
How awesome. Proper
Love you 😍😍😍😍
The Oils were awesome....There is another song everybody loves called Beds Are Burning...Peter Garrett the lead singer ended up becoming a Federal politician by the way for the Labor Party..
Do you love beds are burning. Did you see our other midnight oil track on the main channel. We covered stand in line and it was amazing
Oh for a time machine. MAybe that was the era but I saw them a month or so ago and still an amazing show
awesome!💝 top💜
More subscribers means more midnight oil, i'll agree to that any day, i have to tell you midnight oil have been blowing the roofs off pubs and clubs since 1978 do yourselves a favour and research the oils, and listen to there albums from the first to the latest, you will fall in love as i did.
George Here, I lived in Sydney in 1985/86 and that was when I first came across them and has been my favorite band ever since
Clash meets B-52s meets REM is such a great description. 3 great bands with the Oils making a 4th :) Seen a few of them live and all brilliant.
I see that B52s are now calling it quits on touring. Good that you got see them
@@TheThamesmenToo Yes I think they reverted to just corporate shows in the US in the last decade.
Brilliant. Thanks
Jimmy Sharman's Boxers is the must see track from this concert. If you thought the last minute of Power and the Passion was good, you will be blown away by the last 3 mins of this. Powerful and emotional vocals and the crescendo of horns and guitars is sensational.
Turn it up loud.
George here. I really love that track so that sounds a great idea. Thank you for the support
By far the best song in this set is Back on the Borderline- it blows you away, and that's just the drum intro.
Saw them at Selina's at the Coogee Bay Hotel in '86-ish....the most powerful performance I have ever witnessed.
Amazing band.
Hirst's drumming is exceptional.
Very jealous!
Loved the Oils
Been watching the Themesman for a while now. I think you would love Ne Obliviscaris live in Colorado. And plague flowers the Kaliedescope.
Thank you for the suggestions and thank you for the support we appreciate it
v oils- one of best bands to cme frm au, hard hiting n trythful lkyrics n lots pasion, try us forces, beds r burning, deadheart etc etc.
Did you see we did stand in line on the main channel? Thanks for the suggestions
😃😃😃lovely😃😃morning
Gosh😉 Very very Fine
2 things,.. I've got my tickets for next year and am looking forward to seeing them.
My wifes great great great grandmother was sent out here on the first fleet as a convict for stealing fabric. Initially sentenced to death but commuted to 7 yrs in the colonies. She never went back.
What a great history. If that had not happened you would not get to see the final tour. I am jealous
Great choice guys.Drummer Rob Hirst,Oz's answer to Keith Moon. What a weapon.
He really is!
"Burning the midnight oil", a saying that means working hard and late into the night. I also wonder if it has an esoteric meaning for this band.
Good question I bet you someone out here knows the answer to that!
Dropped in to say Love ya show fellas👍
Especially any Oz content of course lol.
The Oils are the best Live band I've seen. Still as good just a couple of years ago 🤘
Divinyls were a sensational Live band too!!
As were INXS ..( I was fortunate to be at the 'Live Baby Live' gig at Wembley in '91. .twas😎 AF!
The band's on beforehand were: Hothouse Flowers,Jesus Jones,Debra Harry,Roachford, Jellyfish.
..Then, (from memory😐) just before sunset hit,..INXS kicked off.
*It'll all be in my memoirs 👍 🤔🤣
A hugely fond memory of my 3yrs in England 🎯 ♥️
..and INXS kicked it in the d!CK!!! 🤘🤘🌏🇦🇺
hope yas get to 500! ..More OILS 👍
Holy crap we reached 500. Thank you for the support. I bet INXS live would’ve been amazing
@@TheThamesmenToo they were Brill👍👍 & now glad to relive it on Blu-ray😎
🇦🇺
Loved it, my favourite song of theirs. It's 'A' channel material in my opinion,, Another good one, cheers guys!
Thank you for the support. Anything you can do to get us up to 500 likes and have Alex eat his hat would be appreciated!
If you mix punk and folk, you get Midnight Oil.
Great observation. That is really true
10 to 1 is my favourite Oils album.
Yep that is a great album
Great Drum solo Rob Hirst
He is great for sure
They had a few albums before the one this song was on was released.
Great albums too
We got the best of you. You must have sent all your cricket talent to.
Not sure the word Cricket and talent belong together in the UK currently! There was a covid joke going around was that the only Rapid test you could find were on the cricket pitch!
The oils have just dropped another new track from their new fourth coming album. !!
Not listened yet but I better straight away!
I have to add midnight oils drummer Rob Hurst is a power house drummer, there early stuff will hook you, bus to bondi smashes it, i would love to hear what you think after you do your research, midnight oil are Australian rock royalty
Did you check out the reaction to "stand in Line" on our main channel?
Thank you. The Oils are unique. You can't slot them into any category. .Isn't it time this went on Channel A? 1.7k likes?
We cant move videos, it would take uploading again and then it would feel like cheating as would have in two places. That said we did other Midnight oil tracks on Channel One since then.
Great mates, hot girls, beers bundy and bands like the Oils, Cold Chisel,INXS, Angels, Hunter’s. What a time
That sounds like my 6 months in Sydney in 1985!
I hope someone has educated you on Peter Political Career sat in our Labor Parliament did a great job in his Portfolio, was not just a backbencher, he does not just talk the talk he walks the walk.
