      Old but also, only new MCM could do this. Think about it. They have a major film crew that wants to use one of their cars for a car commercial for one of their sponsors, so they have to call friends they have made literally another country and go fly over there, to pull together all the parts.... It's only by being great guys to everyone around them that all these people are willing to work with him for them to do this Looney tunes thing. Lol
      I love it.

      @@TravisFabel I didn't really mean the whole trip thing (though thats cool too). More the whole vibe of it. The "we're off to Japan for parts" now could easily have been "we're off to supercheap" from years back.

    • @Anaerin

      Or it's some kind of EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) system to help improve fuel economy.

    • @TravisFabel
      @TravisFabel ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If the exhaust is blocked off from it and it's just connected to it with a dead end, it's likely a preheater. They used to use these on the cars in the US back in the 1970s and early '80s... Often the hose was pretty short because it just had to go from the top of the exhaust manifold heat shield to the bottom of the intake snorkel on the v8s.

    • @paranormalextract4976
      @paranormalextract4976 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Anaerin Not in this case.

  • @ouch1011
    @ouch1011 ปีที่แล้ว

    The hose between the exhaust and the intake is pretty common on carbureted or throttle body injection engines. Not only does the vaporization of the fuel and resulting temperature drop lead to icing, but the low temperature also causes the fuel to condense in the manifold and head. Since liquid gasoline doesn’t burn, condensed gasoline doesn’t burn. So, they use the heat surrounding the exhaust pipe to warm up the intake air. Pretty much every carbureted car will have some form of this. Some will run heat ducting from the exhaust to the intake. Some will run exhaust through a separate passage in the base of the intake manifold.
    Was not expecting to see a trip to Japan in this video. I’m heading back there this summer (only my second time going) and this made me super excited to see it again. Such an amazing place!

  • @thatguyb3rt
    @thatguyb3rt ปีที่แล้ว

    At 6:14 you guys got the gist of it. There is a outer shell around the exhaust pipe (or a shroud of some sort around the exhaust manifold on other cars). The intake of the car has a temperature controlled door somewhere before the air cleaner that allows the engine to draw in some of that hot air (not actual exhaust gases, just air from that exhaust warmed chamber) into the engine. The long and the short of it is that it helps keep the carb from icing up in colder weather and at first start.

    So I wasn’t dreaming on Australia Day when I came onto the Hume Fwy just after the Glenrowan BP from the snow road and saw the midget on a trailer being towed by the Kei truck…?
    Was wondering what you guys were doing down in Vic with it…
    We waved madly from our bright yellow machine going the other way…can’t wait to see the ad, cheers guys!

    A lot of carby cars have those hoses. It was to help with cold starts by pulling air past exhaust to heat up for combustion. Typically, there would be a vacuum valve to close it off once warm enough.

    This project is insanely exciting for me. Well, all of your Kei projects, really.
    I started off with Skylines and Silvias, which brought me your way, but it seems our tastes have aligned, and I'm getting into smaller and smaller cars to bring my childhood nostalgia back (The first car I ever drove was a Messerschmitt KR200, or something similar)
    Thank you for giving me even more ammunition to pull the trigger on buying a Kei van or ute in the future.
    Hopefully when you dudes hit up NZ again, I can come out and let you drive the new Jimny, or take a perv at my busted up GTS4 coupe.

    The hose de-ices the carb, and potentially the other side is used for cabin heat. Commonly used on horizontally opposed engine aircraft.

    LOL!! 🤣 You guys always crack me up! Yes, that's a preheater/warmup device for the air intake in cold weather. More common on older vehicles with less advanced fuel injection systems in the 80's and 90's. As for the laying down of the engine, definitely look to the differences! VW people have been stuffing vertical inline 4 cylinders horizontal in Vanagons for a long time.

    As someone who's putting an EJ-VE in an L501 cuore (originally an ED20) this is an insane project to embark on. Hopefully you have an easier time with the electronics side of things, it's been a huge faff for me. All the mechanical bits bolt right in, it's still on the ED subframe, shorter ratio ED box, but every single cable on the loom is different and it's been a massive ballache trying to get everything wired up. Good luck on the build guys, can't wait to see the end result!
