@@dan.r9220 Sounds to me like the guy who repaired the vehicle is no longer with us, that's why they cant get the paperwork for it, and why it was his family who told them the price of car. Very sad story if I'm right.
Purchased the car 7 and spent 10k and time and effort, probably arguments with family/missus and only sold it for 9 for a loss of 8k and all the time and effort. My guess is something happened to the person between the time span of fixing the car and registering it, or buying and fixing this car was a mistake that ruined that man’s life as he couldn’t get his money back or register it. Some people don’t got 9k spare. I’m lucky to save 100 dollars a week, that would set me back 2 years of savings. If MCM called me about it, I would say sorry I dunno what you’re talking about, don’t want anything to do with that car.
Based on them saying they spoke to the family of the person who fixed it, and agreeing not to share it publicly, sounds like mate might not be with us anymore. Maybe it ended up back in auction after they passed and that's why it ended up at a dealer for pennies on the dollar. Big props to MCM for being stand up guys about whatever the situation is/was and respecting the family's wishes. Moog's BRZ could be called Schroedingers car, its either worth $9000 or $30000, great video, Jesse is a legend, and glad Skippy didn't hurt him in the accident, 👍🏼👍🏼
Hey Moog im sure someone has already said this but you are exactly correct using the electric ratchet. you break it loose first because its not an impact ratchet
That hand wrenching tequnique is something they are designed for. For more information you can see a Project Farm video that tests a bunch of them against each other.
Came here for this lol Even on the directions for these battery powered ratchets, they state how much they are capable of torquing to but also state how much torque you can apply manually (usually 100ftlbs)
Yes but isn't the way the battery pack sticks out, sooo Black and Decker ish, it hurts my eyes to even look at something that poorly designed and unergonomic.
I (unknowingly) bought an 06 XT Forester back in 2011 from a dealer here in nsw that was a repaired write off in qld. Back when revs apparently didn't bring up info from other states 🤔. Owned it for a few years, bigger turbo and whatnot, was awesome. Years after I sold it one of the owners after tried to register it as it was unregistered at one stage... And it couldn't be done for some reason, even though it was rego'd in nsw for ages. 🤷🏻♂️. I hit a roo in that as well lol.
this video is so helpful to me. i traded a 3rd gen rx7 rolling chassis for a 2014 frs and a lof of small parts are missing. its nice to see you guys put all of the little bits on so i can learn what im actually missing. as a bonus i think its funny that my car was in a front end collision, but not nearly as well repaired, yet. thanks for the tutorial and inspiration.
No, its not. I've seen guys break them by doing exactly that. It's designed for about 40 Nm of torque with some headroom. Put more than that and you'll shatter its plastic case.
@@CockroachSlidy Dude, it’s a ratchet. If someone builds a tool that can’t do the thing it’s literally named for, it’s not worth having. Every single air or electric ratchet I’ve ever had (and I’ve had quite a few in 30 years) recommends to NOT use the motor for loosening and tightening. Stop being a troll and let the adults talk facts.
@@MrVolksbeetle The fact is that these Ryobi ratchets don't have metal frames inside. They are literally split in half if you try to break a stuck bolt with it. In matter of fact you are not suppose to use even manual ratchets for this. They can handle some abuse but not a lot. This is why we have breaker bars. Just take a racket apart and see yourself how flimsy it is.
You guys are just amazing. One of the many reasons I watch you amazing bloke's is your continued support of mental health charity. I hope you continue doing such great work for a very long time to come. Thank you.
That is so freaking awesome! I had a similar experience with a 85 300ZX I bought. It popped up on FB MP for $700 bucks and was in pretty sorry shape and the lady said it didn't run. I went out there and was able to jump it and get it running, just a dead battery. The title wasn't in the persons name and I said if she could get the persons signature I'd pay what she was asking. When I went back to pick it up the signature was obviously forged and I talked her down to $300. I ended up searching the dudes name on the title and found him on FB and seen photos of the car on his profile! I sent him a message to see if I could mail him the documents for transferring the title to me and he was completely down for it! So in all I had a registered and driving 85 300ZX for $300 bucks! The interior was pretty torn up but ran and drove great after some service! It had the digital dash and would talk to ya! Loved that car, it is missed!
Having fixed a few of the 86 variants to pass inspections, the only parts that carry a traceable serial number from factory are the airbag (SRS) components. All the other body panels and miscellaneous parts have no way to be tracked. Just buy some new OEM parts, and use those receipts. Looks like a pretty easy fix!
@@HyperFragHD The whole point of this is to make it impossible to do that. You need proof of purchace to prove you got new parts that didnt come off another car. In VICTORIA if you buy parts from another person to put on a repairable write off, you need the VIN number of the vehicle it came off and then that vehicle cant be registered for road use anymore. Ask me how i know........ GSXR1000 needs a VIV cert to get re registered. almost impossible without buying all factory replacement parts and making a repair diary documenting all the repairs.
Crashed at 27kms now has 100kms might have done a cluster swap and might explain where the extractors have gone. Someone might have a 27km BRZ with a set of extractors that’s actually done 100km
@@TheDevilVaper He was going 100km/h when he hit the kangaroo, but they also mentioned there's 100ks according to the odo when they were looking at the condition of the interior :)
Seeing as you'll be modifying it anyway, could you buy aftermarket parts and use those receipts to register it? Then sell the OEM parts to help cover the cost
Not likely they need receipts to match the parts listed on the report on the written off vehicle register. Mostly body panels, windscreen, new airbag, possibly radiator support, front bumper reinforments stuff you generally don't modify.
@@rci-9160 yes however damage to those parts are recorded into the wovr (written off vehicle register) and you need to prove the repairs to those parts I've done a wovr myself

@@richardprice5978 The difference is your in the USA. Australia is a whole different ball game when It comes to Vehicle laws. To get plates, your car needs to be OEM with records on all parts fitted to it. It needs to be close to original and you cannot fake documents. Hence why the guy who bought it at auction, repaired it to it's original condition.
Buy another wrecked BRZ to "take the parts off" to fix your car. The paperwork will explain where all the parts came from. Even if you have to pay another $4000, you will double the value of the car. Paid $15000 for the white car and parts car, to have the white car be worth $30000
Here is a problem though. They have no idea what parts were fixed. The repair on this car is fantastic. How do you track what parts were changed. You still need the report and receipts to even see what was changed.

Be careful, having worked in the insurance and repair industry i have seen quite a few jobs like this where a reparable write-off has been repaired with a stolen car and its parts. which kinda might explain why you have so many genuine clips and fastners. Hope thats not the case.
And that's exactly the reason for these laws preventing registration. Lots of people here giving tips on how to bypass the rules without any regard as to why the rule is there in the first place. If you buy stolen vehicles or vehicle parts, you are directly supporting the thieves. Always make sure the used parts you are buying have a believable backstory, even if it's just going on the track.
i have been thru this before""Look worst case scenario you can remove all the replaced parts you don't have proof of purchase for sell them or swap them with a wrecking yard" get more parts with a proof of purchase and vin of the car it came off then write out a detailed repair letter of what was done! then you are all good to go!

It's worth both $10k and $30k. It's Schrödinger's BRZ! 😂

Yep. At 17:30 it entered superposition.

Wow, sounds like a rough time for the guy who fixed it. Hope he's well.
The mental health statement at the end makes me suspect he's not.
@@brett7801 Bro that would be pretty fd up
Purchased the car 7 and spent 10k and time and effort, probably arguments with family/missus and only sold it for 9 for a loss of 8k and all the time and effort.
@@brett7801 that’s a charity they’ve been supporting for quite some time and the mention it every so often.
Much love to all involved, hopefully I'm wrong and they just want their privacy which is fair enough too.
I really liked the quick recap/update in text at the end. This is a fun process to watch, full stop.
Jesse is awesome, and this shows again how amazing the MCM guys are, too.
The background on the car really makes this episode for me. Now I've really bought into the car and how it all turns out. Good stuff!
You guys really been here longer than pretty much anyone doing it for the love of the cars and nothing else. Such a great story behind this one.
Moog's BRZ could be called Schroedingers car, its either worth $9000 or $30000, great video, Jesse is a legend, and glad Skippy didn't hurt him in the accident, 👍🏼👍🏼
What a cool story this has turned out to be. You found what you thought the story was and the guy totally confirmed it on the phone. How cool is that?
Hey Moog im sure someone has already said this but you are exactly correct using the electric ratchet. you break it loose first because its not an impact ratchet
They should totally let the guy drive his old car again when they get it fully repaired and modded.
definitely, they should take it up to the same track he got the pic at and at least take him for a trip round.
Just saw this after I made my comment, but this 100x

Like calling a deer you hit rudolph or something in the states lmao
It'd be pretty cool to have a track day with this car and invite the original owner to drive it seeing that he's a MCM fan
That hand wrenching tequnique is something they are designed for. For more information you can see a Project Farm video that tests a bunch of them against each other.
Came here for this lol
Even on the directions for these battery powered ratchets, they state how much they are capable of torquing to but also state how much torque you can apply manually (usually 100ftlbs)
@@FixingWithFriends air ratchets also do it too
Yes but isn't the way the battery pack sticks out, sooo Black and Decker ish, it hurts my eyes to even look at something that poorly designed and unergonomic.
Crazy how nice Jesse was and good getting a call from Moog seemed like a totally normal occurrence. AHHH SKIPPY!!!
Pretty sure the video of Skippy's hit is on dcoa
Right? He handled it like that's not that out of the norm for his life.
"Why do we need two?"
"Because then there is twice as many."
So THIS is why I absolutely adore watching MCM for 7 years strait! Keep it up guys!
P.S. Poor skippy, RIP 😑
That tool IS designed to do that. Also to finish tightening. Always torque it a bit more manually after you hammer it home with that.
Correct.
This ^^^ Exactly right. Too many backseat mechanics lol
Thank you.
I haven't watched an episode of MGM in a while but watching you two buy skeevy cars from the internet is so classic that I had to come back
That is so freaking awesome!
Your support of ReachOut is fantastic...a credit to you both [and Jesse]...!!!
That's cool that the owner would respond and help you guys out and what you're doing to that vehicle
That was my thought, but they would still have to buy parts to not use and then return. Seems like a hassle. But.... if he bought 2....
@@dan.r9220 buy 2, swap the parts out.. pass the inspection and put the parts back in...then sell the 86 🤣 legit plan??
@@HyperFragHD The whole point of this is to make it impossible to do that.
You need proof of purchace to prove you got new parts that didnt come off another car.
In VICTORIA if you buy parts from another person to put on a repairable write off, you need the VIN number of the vehicle it came off and then that vehicle cant be registered for road use anymore.
Ask me how i know........ GSXR1000 needs a VIV cert to get re registered. almost impossible without buying all factory replacement parts and making a repair diary documenting all the repairs.
@@rb30e faaaaark, in Queensland they don't really give af aslong as the vin of the vehicle your trying to register doesn't raise alarms your fine
@@rb30e In their case, purchasing the panels new from a Subaru dealer would be the best bet, and they are not very expensive.
Yeah there might not have been a lot of wrenching in this video but watching Moog and Marty play car detective was actually pretty riveting.
Jesse would have been even more of a legend if he snuck in “I’m really more of a ‘Marty’ fan” when chatting with Moog as a good ribbing.
One of the best episodes of MCM ever!
Crashed at 27kms now has 100kms might have done a cluster swap and might explain where the extractors have gone. Someone might have a 27km BRZ with a set of extractors that’s actually done 100km
The 27k figure was the cost of repair not the KMs I believe
From what I gathered he was going 100km/h when he hit the kangaroo. Not 100kms on the odometer.
@@TheDevilVaper He was going 100km/h when he hit the kangaroo, but they also mentioned there's 100ks according to the odo when they were looking at the condition of the interior :)
@@vincentxtran There is no mention of the odo measurement. In which film did you see it and when?

I love the lore on this BRZ!
This is a wild story. I'd love it if Jesse could make a live appearance on the reveal episode after you guys are done working your magic on it.
This was such a wholesome video. I'm not sure I'd have been able to hold it together if Moog had called me like that! Legends all round
The only parts that have a registered numbers are airbag components. Body panels have no serial.

Dude, that roo footage! Damn. Also, am looking forward to the special, end-of-year eps. Sounds good
Honestly really hope that you can get the receipts. Would love to see this back on the road.
Jesse handled it chill, if I would get a call from any local youtuber car guys I would go full mental!
Buy another wrecked BRZ to "take the parts off" to fix your car. The paperwork will explain where all the parts came from. Even if you have to pay another $4000, you will double the value of the car. Paid $15000 for the white car and parts car, to have the white car be worth $30000
This is high IQ
I think youd still have to have detailed photos of all the crash damage though.
My Dad used to do this with old Datsun's lol. We always had a whole spare parts car lol. It worked out well over the years.
Here is a problem though. They have no idea what parts were fixed. The repair on this car is fantastic. How do you track what parts were changed. You still need the report and receipts to even see what was changed.
In Vic you also need detailed photos of the repair work, so this may also be true in qld.
This is automotive archeology taken to a whole new level. That phone conversation with the original owner was absolutely magical. Hahaha... I can't even imagine what was going through his head when he picks up the phone and the caller announces himself as Moog from Mighty Car Mods. Legendary! =D
What a small world! I think it would be absolutely amazing if you guys could get Jesse to come see the car after it's been built up (maybe even give him a ride at the track / go to a track day together?) would make for some awesome wholesome content!

Yep, the Red, White and Blue panels missing from MCM cars definitelly have something to do with the upcoming christmas special, I'd bet money on It.
So good to see the ol' "in the bin" clip back again! Detective Moog and Marty-Boy, his assistant, are on the case! Looking forward to seeing how this goes
Exciting to see my favourite youtube channel expanding, been watching for years from NZ. Learnt heaps from you roos
i have been thru this before""Look worst case scenario you can remove all the replaced parts you don't have proof of purchase for sell them or swap them with a wrecking yard" get more parts with a proof of purchase and vin of the car it came off then write out a detailed repair letter of what was done! then you are all good to go!
