I feel like the “face of the nba” really is an old media idea that they can’t seem to let go of. I understand the idea of it when it comes to tv marketing but it’s not like a superstar being at a small market matters when you can find a guy on instagram or through other platforms to watch them as much as they want
I’m sure it’s a cool thing to be labeled, but as you said, being the face of the league means less when social media is a thing and anyone could look up highlights of just about any player they are curious about. 2000’s were probably the last decade before social media impacted all that. The “face of the nba” will always be whoever wins the mvp and best player on the championship team. And if you win a couple rings and mvps like bron and Steph, then your reign as the face will last longer. It’s not that deep

Bad faith convo from both sides imo bc the knock on Luka, from what I have heard around me, is that the guy ain't as accomplished and is yet to make that leap - whether or not you think that is because his teammates are bad (which isn't true over time) is redundant (I even remember when LOW himself made a Vid on why Luka won't win with the playstyle he currently employs). LOW does a good job with the notion of why Luka should be the face but I would say that if Tatum wins a ring, he's the face - much like how Kobe was the face in the mid 00's despite LeBron going on a statistical tear of his own back then.

I don't get this whole face of the league thing. Why does it have to be only one? There's so many great players. Just stop it. That isn't what's most important. What is important is for the games to be good. The NFL doesn't make as big a deal of stuff like this. You can say Mahomes is the face now, and before it was Brady, but only because they be winning or being close to win every year. If any of them had a couple of seasons where they weren't getting to the playoffs the NFL they would become replaced immediately. Just talk about all the great players and teams, stop it with the Lebron and Curry when they are 9 and 10. Talk about the great teams and it's great players. Stop being xenophobic and give love to Luka, Jokic, Giannis. If they focused on the top teams and pushed them more, it would make more people like this teams and players, like Jokic and Denver. He should be talked about more than Lakers and Warriors this season. That would create more Nuggets and Jokic fans, and even Jamal Murray. More focus on teams and less on players would be great. A guy from Milwaukee, Denver, OKC, Minnesota, etc. Will have a MUCH harder time because of media markets and coverage. It took LeBron being the most hyped HS prospect ever to overcome playing in the Cleveland market.

Not true, Los Angeles basketball market in the 70s before showtime was treated as the current Rams-Chargers NFL market, nobody cares until they started winning chips. The face of the league can turn a small market to a dominant culture. Look at Dallas a team that has no football team, but is a good basketball market. This market thing doesn’t make sense as because what will the NBA get if the same big markets are getting superstar players, a boring competition. On top of that, the big market puts pressure on any star. Look what happened to Carmelo Anthony and NYK, The new face of the NBA comes down to star on the franchise that got front office and coaches scheming in order on a clear cultural goal to create a dynasty.

Well the thing about people like Bill Russel, Kareem, and Bird is that while they weren't marketable, they were so dominant (damn near every finals in their decades) that everyone had to know them. You are right about larry bird not liking the limelight and not having the most outward personality, but I think a couple of things helped him stay likable/marketable. One, similar to Jordan and Kobe, he was ridiculously ultra competitive which showed often enough his personality, and I also think there is something inherently likable about ultra competitive players. The second being his connection with magic definitely helped, Larry being strongly associated with magic definitely helped a lot and I think once they became close friends in the mid 80s that also helped push Larry.
Everyone loves superstar rivalries and players who thrive in the clutch. Players who can talk sh!t and back it up or outplay other players if they talk sh!t to you become legends through the stories of their exploits. Bird has all of it. If he was just a white guy who played better than everyone else, he wouldn't be anywhere near as popular as he got. It's the storylines along the way that build legend status.

I geniuly believe the problem is that the nba is looking for a face at all cost. It was mj,kobe,lebron. Now that the game is much more global,as they want it to be anyways,they need to recognize that this era is different and should not perceived under the same marketing strategy. You got euros taking over the game,you got Joel. We are taking about faces more than ever and not a face. Global embassadors. The nba would need to adjust their tactics on what it is available. No Us player has the charisma of the previous generation to become the face and most of the euros want nothing to do with it. Adapt the reality. It would only make the game better.

I feel like the “face of the nba” really is an old media idea that they can’t seem to let go of. I understand the idea of it when it comes to tv marketing but it’s not like a superstar being at a small market matters when you can find a guy on instagram or through other platforms to watch them as much as they want

Bad faith convo from both sides imo bc the knock on Luka, from what I have heard around me, is that the guy ain't as accomplished and is yet to make that leap - whether or not you think that is because his teammates are bad (which isn't true over time) is redundant (I even remember when LOW himself made a Vid on why Luka won't win with the playstyle he currently employs). LOW does a good job with the notion of why Luka should be the face but I would say that if Tatum wins a ring, he's the face - much like how Kobe was the face in the mid 00's despite LeBron going on a statistical tear of his own back then.

I don't get this whole face of the league thing. Why does it have to be only one? There's so many great players. Just stop it. That isn't what's most important. What is important is for the games to be good. The NFL doesn't make as big a deal of stuff like this. You can say Mahomes is the face now, and before it was Brady, but only because they be winning or being close to win every year. If any of them had a couple of seasons where they weren't getting to the playoffs the NFL they would become replaced immediately. Just talk about all the great players and teams, stop it with the Lebron and Curry when they are 9 and 10. Talk about the great teams and it's great players. Stop being xenophobic and give love to Luka, Jokic, Giannis. If they focused on the top teams and pushed them more, it would make more people like this teams and players, like Jokic and Denver. He should be talked about more than Lakers and Warriors this season. That would create more Nuggets and Jokic fans, and even Jamal Murray.
More focus on teams and less on players would be great. I think it's better for the sport that all their fans support a team they love instead of just loving a player that jumps from team to team, that way they will watch the NBA even when the team and it's players changes, even after the player they love retires.

You are right about larry bird not liking the limelight and not having the most outward personality, but I think a couple of things helped him stay likable/marketable. One, similar to Jordan and Kobe, he was ridiculously ultra competitive which showed often enough his personality, and I also think there is something inherently likable about ultra competitive players. The second being his connection with magic definitely helped, Larry being strongly associated with magic definitely helped a lot and I think once they became close friends in the mid 80s that also helped push Larry.
Everyone loves superstar rivalries and players who thrive in the clutch. Players who can talk sh!t and back it up or outplay other players if they talk sh!t to you become legends through the stories of their exploits.
Bird has all of it. If he was just a white guy who played better than everyone else, he wouldn't be anywhere near as popular as he got. It's the storylines along the way that build legend status.
