I dunno, I kinda sympathize with the accidental plagiarist. I too sometimes fall face first into my keyboard, specifically the ctrl + c, then Ctrl + v, then flail my arms in pain to misclick my mouse to the submission box.

We had a top level Politician in Germany, who held positions as the minister of Economy, Science and Defense at some point, whos political career ended when people found instances of plagiarism in his PhD dissertation. He stole work from several people, including his own dissertation supervisor, which is a true 200IQ move right there. He became a national joke in 2011 and was not really heard of ever since. Naturally this didn't HAVE to end his career as a politician - not like you need a PhD to qualify - but after the scandal the party didn't really want to be associated with him anymore and so he "decided" to resign.
For anyone interested, the guy used to be from the conservative- right wing "christian social union" (CSU) - party. He also comes from some old noble family and his full name is
"Karl-Theodor Maria Nikolaus Johann Jacob Philipp Franz Joseph Sylvester Buhl-Freiherr von und zu Guttenberg"

@@benedictrogers1478 If you just write: this was best expressed by : "" [source], then it wouldn't be plagiarism, would it?
It might not get you a passing grade, if there is not enough of your own work in it, but as long as you clearly mark thoughts that are not your own as such, you are not doing anything unethical.

Using a template is not plagiarism, mate. Templates exist for a reason, I used one for my own CV, as do millions of others every day. Everything else he did, however... yeah, plagiarism. I don't even understand why he did it. If you play a game, I'm sure you must have an opinion on it, and you just put that into your review. Unless he never even played those games and then hastily copy/pasted some else's work to make it look like he did.

    • @Foxhood

Pixel Perfect I abide by the notion that you shouldn't trawl the TH-camr pools to hire for a Journalist position for a few reasons:
      1. It's better being the other way around. TH-camrs are making the mainstream games media sites more irrelevant by the day and we are seeing more and more qualified joutnalists are flocking to YT and Twitch to create they're own content.
      2. Higher education isn't as much of a class issue as the effects of left-centrist government are still being felt and working class
people (like myself) have gone to Uni and received an education. If anything It's our anti-intellectual society that does more damage to the act of applying for an education.
      3. The culture of TH-camr can bring on an air of unprofessionalism and the need to work more comfortably. There are TH-camrs who do their job from scratch, do their research and still make an impact on society (like Phillip De Franco) obviously but by hiring based on views instead of experience will always comes first and that is something that is classist and comes with its own risks. Years ago, going by views would have been sound but now as TH-cam has grown, more people are using their already-established presences in order to garner views.

Well I don't know about you but I thought Dead Cells was an amazing game: Dead Cells takes the progression of Metroidvania, and takes you into this procedurally generated action rouge-like, that has you slowly chipping away at its steep difficulty. Although Dead Cells falters slightly with some repetition setting in, especially in some of the earlier sections and longer play throughs. In most games of this genre your coolest spells are often set to strictly longer recharge timers or a limited mana system. But in Dead Cells, your abilities have extremely quick recharge which allows you to seamlessly integrate your new gadgets into normal encounters and it doesn't penalise you for using your cool stuff. Hey I could be a games critic!

Not that I'm trying to defend Filip, but looking at other's opinions to help your own isn't a rare or bad thing. Hell, in school, we are taught to do research on other people journals and articles to help with our papers. The purpose to this is to gain new knowledge and perspective you did not notice or considered from your own experience. Some of those opinions you may disagree and as such you develop counterargument for them which makes your opinions more original as your own experience to disprove their opinion. However, what Filip fail to understand about "researching" is that it suppose to help form your opinion, not using the research as your own opinion.

I've been a video game journalist for the past 13 years, and it makes me so sad to see people like this Filip guy continue to tarnish the already godawful reputation of our trade. There is no excuse for plagiarism. Period. Stealing from fellow hard-working people in the same line of work is abhorrent enough, but this idiot going the extra mile and trying to ego-trip himself out of an already terrible situation is like pissing in the community pool...from the starting block. Did it slip his mind, that the Internet NEVER forgets? He not only made himself completely unhiriable as an editor and journalist, but probably as most everything else too. In this day and age, employers don't just check your credit and rap sheet, but also your social media and history on the Internet. A simple friggin Google search would out him as an untrustworthy, lazy crook with an ego the size of the Sun. No sane employer would ever hire someone like him, because as Jim said, plagiarism never happens just once. It's a character trait, one that combines complete inability or reluctance to do your job with the complete disregard for other people's hard work that borders on sociopathy. Combine that with the utter lack of remorse and sheer arrogance he demonstrated after the fact, and you get a person that's lower on the hire-list than ex-convicts. There are no halfway-houses for people who commit career/character suicide of this magnitude. So, Filip, good luck flipping burgers somewhere in the middle of nowhere with no internet connection...

Stand up for your beliefs, absolutely - but pick your battles and don't burn yourself out. Burn yourself out and you won't be able to fight at all.

    • @Playbahnosh
      @Playbahnosh 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

@Tengila No no, I was talking about the walls of text on political stuff. Don't get me wrong, I do that too, waaaaay to often. Hell, I sometimes spend more time and energy researching stuff for a damn youtube comment than my actual job, because the journalist in me won't let me post unfounded bullshit. I'm not Filip Miucin (bazinga!). I was talking about the notion that one should stop speaking their mind because "who knows who's listening", you know. If you are scared to speak your mind about things you care about (walls of text notwithstanding), then we truly are living 1984...
And probably this is why I spend so much time and energy writing comments, explaining my views, to make sure if anyone quotes me on any of them, I can stand up and say "yes, I said that. What about it?". No regrets.

I wasn't genuinely ticked off with him until he posted that disgusting apology video in which he denied the obvious and even threw accusations at someone he'd stolen from...
I was willing to assume something was going on in his life and he just stole a review due to some time constraint (especially as it was such an obvious, seemingly unpracticed theft) which would warrant firing and such but not necessarily mean he's a terrible guy, but after that video it was clear this man is an asshole.

That being said i really do not envy their staff having to deal with all this crap and the horrible shadow it has cast on an otherwise entertaining, (if not, in my opinion, reliable) games media outlet.

Well, journalism in general. Learning how to write informative and with concentrated information, understand the industry at large, conduct proper resarch...
Of course, like almost all kinds of journalism, but more so in gaming due to its specific surroundings and nature, these things are often not that important given that more entertaining (or sensational) work gets more important than quality work in the age of clicks. Opposse this with more classical newspaper journalism - especially before online components became more important - and you generally find more high-quality work needing education, that is simply not worth it in more modern media. This is still present of course, but outside of giant scandals its unfortunatly rare for it to be worth the time of the journalist to do a lot of resarch and write in-depth contributions to something.

Not only did he have the gall to plagiarize someone's work, he didn't give a proper apology (a half-assed one), he continued to act "holier than thou" and assumes that everything is right as rain and he didn't to anything wrong, challenges the audience to find any more of his faults (which graciously backfired on his ugly mug), not only all that, he then started to play the victim card and now blocks people on twitter to prevent further damage to his already low ego.
This man is the grime of the barrel. The black stain on bottom of your coffee cup that won't go away.

Captain Merx I’m sure he’ll eventually remove his entire online presence

if he was smart, he would. although he is more then likely going to re-emerge under a new name. still, his chances of a career in gaming is vaporized.

I came here to find out more when Jim tweeted about him recently. What a complete knob this guy is. He should've kept his mouth shut.

if he was stupid enough to plagiarise multiple different reviews, I am not surprised to hear that he came back to games journalism without thinking it through.
