I love how the when the constable was summoned by the son of a farmer in the early hours of the morning, he agreed to go check things out but told the kid to build a snowman for his daughters before departing from his house. That's the most charmingly benign abuse of police authority ever. "If you want my help, it's going to cost you--one snowman."
It was a ploy the entire time, the kid never had his snowman-making license and was going to get fined when the copper got back. truly a horror story fit for bed time
This really gave me the creeps. My grandfather witnessed a similar event in New England, in the early 1920s. Bipedal footprints in the snow, going on for miles on end. Local Native Americans said they recognized this as the visitation of a Wendigo. There was more to it, but that's all my grandfather was willing to say about the event. Whatever else he knew he took to his grave.
Yeah there is a specific reason not to talk about those specific things if you believe in them. Essentially names are important and just talking about them in general causes you to attract them. If you ever need to get out of a speeding ticket on native land, is always worth a shot to claim something chased you. By the time you even start generically describing it, Cop is liable to shove a hand in your face and tell you to shut up before quickly hopping back in his own car and also speeding away. It is super taboo and taken pretty seriously in some indigenous cultures. It is actually kind of funny because given modern conveniences they arent super threatening, they are like 0 for a million against cars for instance, but they are known for being horrifying so the like slim chance they are real makes people go why bother and follow the traditions.
I've found something similar: One winter day I was at my mother's and I was doing something in the garden and while looking over the stone wall I saw foot prints in the snow on the farm field. That was strange and I'm curious so I decided to investigate, so I walked around to the field and found a trail of hoof prints. I was puzzled by why someone wouldv'e ridden there, expecially in the night or early morning. I followed the hoof prints along my mother's property and strangely it looked as if the creature that had made them was walking on two legs. The "horse" did not walk over things though, it had walked around the stone wall and when reaching the neighbours fence had been stopped, at the fence it had done a sharp u turn, which was too small a turn for something four-legged to make. I have a lot of experience with horses, so I know what prints they usually leave. I guess the most plausible explanation is still a horse, but it's super strange that the tracks appeared to have been made by something on two legs.

The Loosemore girls woke up that morning to find that a snowman had indeed been constructed in the front yard, but their delight would soon turn to terror. Not only was the snowman crudely made, as if constructed with a lack of care uncharacteristic of their diligent father, but the footprints surrounding it were the wrong size and did not resemble those left by the sturdy winter boots of the constable, which did indeed lead away from the house without coming near the snowman. The girls deduced that their father must have neglected to keep his promise, perhaps in a rush to begin his shift due to some unforeseen circumstance. Seeing no other explanation, the horrified sisters concluded that the pitiful snowman must have been created by none other than Lucifer himself!

Fun fact: in 1855 constables didn't wore the iconic Pith (or Guardian) helmet, they instead wore a tall stovepipe hat. This hat was made rigid and reinforced enough so that a constable could use it as a step in case of a chase to climb over short fences and walls
Constable: “Do you want to build a snowman???!” Boy: “Not particularly!” Constable: “Boy. . . I said: do you want to build a snowman?” Boy: “I guess so, yea.”
Lol, even back then the "balloon" explanation was used! How did this "balloon" go up to doors and windows then abruptly do a left or right turn around the house then continue on from the other side? Pretty precise wind movements to move a "balloon" in that fashion.
@@stephenwedderburn9307 most of the evidence is purely witness testimony. Maybe the balloon simply moved in the direction of the wind, and it appeared to witnesses like it was deliberately even though it was not.
I remember having the crap scared out of me when I read this story as a child. Wish I could find that book again. It was full of unexplained stories like this, and I read it numerous times, fascinated and spooked to the core. I’ve retained that penchant for creepy and unexplainable tales right up until the present, which is probably the reason this channel was recommended to 60-year-old me. Thanks for bringing back some great memories! 😳😃❤
Same here. This story was always one of the scariest to read during my childhood. But the older I get, the more I believe it was just a profound hoax. It wouldn't be hard to apply horseshoes to the bottom of your boots and just walk through the snow, jump over walls and land on the other side. And i feel like a lot of the reports were probably embellished a bit as mass hysteria began to arise. Now the similar story of the "Devil's footprints," that happened in Quebec Canada, would've been a bit harder to pull off as the hoofprints were found "seared," into the pavement. Not sure how someone would pull that off unless they worked for the road company or something.
I believe the book referred to could be PHENOMENA a book of wonders by John Mitchell and Robert j.m. Rickard first published in 1969. I lost my copy during a residential re-lo in 1980 and acquired a used copy from an online resource in 2023. What a delight reading it and seeing those old photos and illustrations again!
So, I know leaving hoof prints isn't how the devil works, but the balloon theory: wouldn't the dangling items have simply made a messy drag mark instead of individual prints? The hanging objects would have had to carefully move up and down to leave anything like what was described.
It can if the balloon was bobbing up and down as it travelled, but if the trail was as meticulous and methodical as the legend makes it out to be, then probably not. Honestly though, I doubt the validity of a deliberate trail to begin with.
@@gobalbucs All we know for certain is that a large number of people found what they were convinced were footprints of a demon and what has left people baffled.
These were hard agriculture folk. They knew the deference between individual animal species . what tracks they make, the gate they have, the sign left by each of them. They'd know them all intimately well. If they were freaked out it would have been with good reason. I remembered reading about this in our school library as a kid, I was and kind of still am interested in Cryptids and unexplained phenomena like the Devon footprints. These days I’d probably wonder if whatever left those footprints could have had a connection to something like America’s The Jersey Devil?
I actually think the Jersey Devil might be a bird of prey or raptor, like an eagle. Apparently there are colonies of bald eagles living in the Pine Barrens according to Audubon so if we were to look at the number of eagles living in the Pine Barrens recorded by year and compare it to the number of sightings of the Jersey Devil we could find a connection. Of course this is just a theory but to me it makes more sense than the sandhill crane theory.
cha5- Supposedly, there was a footprint embedded in a large rock near a church in Massachusetts, that is supposed to belong to the Devil. I read about that one, as well as the Devon footprints in a book, more than 40 years ago. I can't remember the title, but it was a compilation of strange stories from around the world, particularly the UK and USA.
i read about the Widdecombe event in a book called folk tales of Devon when i was a child, ive also visited the church there. its choir stalls had paintings on them, but unfortunately were decaying away with woodworm, this was in the 1960's. i often wonder if they were preserved, I also read about the devils footprints in a Readers digest about the 1960's. Thanks for combining the two stories together, it made the combination more interesting.
I recall reading of this decades ago and that it might be one of those stories that started my love of strange events and such things. The distance covered and continuing atop roofs were the things that amazed me. I recall one report of it said that there were records of a trail like this decades before in the same general area but its been years since I read that. Keep up the good work, guys.
Is it dark blue? "Mysteries of the Unexplained" The one I have is literally my favorite book and every excerpt from it could be used for an episode of this series
Heard about this way back in primary school (nigh unto 40 years ago). A fair amount of new information here, which is impressive given this story is 166 years old. I'd never heard of the 1638 incident - I like the increased use of animation here - and the attempted explanations do indeed strain credulity. Guess we'll have to wait and see if a better explanation beyond a rogue balloon can be postulated.
@@AbrahamLincoln4 Yes indeed. Especially the Green Children of Woolpit story. I live on the river Teign, in Devon. I'm pretty sure this is the morning my ex wife went for one of her early morning jogs.... coincidence? I think not 😁 Seriously though, loved this story, even more so because it happened on my doorstep. Devon does have its fair share of mysterious stories, legends and folklore, especially Dartmoor. Cheers 👍
Is there a generally accepted theory as to what the footprints are in the community? What is it about Dartmoor that lends itself to supernatural events?

One of the few channels I make sure I'm not doing much of anything so I can pay attention to the story and the amazing art. Totally get where you're coming from. :)
I heard a similar story almost 50 years ago when I was a kid, not sure if it was this particular incident or another: strange animal footprints in the snow walking through town into a river or lake. It was later proved that this was a prank perpetrated by two siblings, who had used their father's rhino-foot waste basket to create the prints - it was quite common in "olden days" to make waste baskets and ash trays out of animal feet, like rhinos and elephants. Still, it makes a good story.
It certainly is a strange case that's pretty well documented for the time as well, and like you I read about it years ago and it's never left my mind definitely a good head scratcher 🤔🧐

I remember this ,I read it in a book called mysteries of England or something like that from a little local library in my village on the Norfolk coast, it was a brilliant book,it also told the sightings of spring heeled Jack in the victorian London about a strange man like creature that could jump on roof tops and just disappear.
Makes me think of the Devil's Tramping Ground in North Carolina. Lots of great stories about it, but if you think about them (and especially if you visit the place) the easiest solution is people getting wound up over something generally mundane.
This reminds me of this one time when it snowed in our small Oklahoma town. Me and my cousin had gone out to play and in our backyard and there next to a tree we're some hoof tracks, they stopped at a tree, but they also just started in the middle of the yard. It was odd because they just started out of nowhere and just ended at this tree, still sticks in my mind.
When I first read about the footprints, it was said that they went in a single line, about the size of a donkey's hoof print. The prints were on rooftops and had jumped haystacks, etc. I always thought it was Spring Heeled Jack.
I don’t think Spring-heeled Jack ever ventured to Devonshire. I think he was spotted in other parts of England but I don’t believe he ever was spotted in that part of England. Then again its been a long time since I read about Spring-heeled Jack.
I first heard of this story from Blurry Photos and learned more details via NightTerrors. I have wondered if the footprints were those of a goat that somehow managed to get up the roof. One theorist has speculated they were made by a kangaroo as apparently a local noble, a baronet I believe, kept one as a pet and they believed it escaped. To me the footprints are more goat like.
Mountain goats can jump up an a clift side, so it was my thought too. A goat went through the town and didn't bother to go around a home. Why go around when you can go across?
@@toothless3835 Exactly. Great minds think alike. Although it wouldn’t explain why people said it appeared as if the prints were made by a bipedal, cloven hoofed creature. I still say it was a goat. A very determined goat at that.
@@conveyor2 Maybe. Sadly the fact we don’t have any daguerreotypes (early photos) of the tracks makes it hard to confirm if they were made by a goat. Back then photography was still quite young and I don’t think there were any professional photographers living in the area the footprints were spotted. Had they occurred at a later period, say the late 19th century, we might have had a higher chance of any surviving photos with the decreasing cost of cameras. Also your comment might have made me inwardly chuckle.

There really is no other channel with this sort of critical, subjective approach to strange phenomena on the internet. So refreshing to be treated to some common sense arguments on a topic. I didn’t roll my eyes once
My granny lived in Dawlish, Devon. I visited the places where the footprints went thru Dawlish. My granny told me that apparently, when the footprints were discovered, the farmers' first move was to put their dogs on the trail but the dogs backed away, whining in fear. It was the dogs' reaction that made people think that the source of the footprints was something supernatural, rather than an animal cuz if that was so, the dogs wouldn't have behaved like that.
First time I knew of outtakes after the credits. definitely gonna have to stick around more often. awesome story as usual, keep it up my dudes, for as long as you can.
Man cmon...Ive been looking all over the internet for a good video about the devils footprints and 3 days later you post this????THATS WHY I LOVE THIS CHANNEL!!
Definitely not if it was going up walls and over houses. With such an old story it's hard to know what parts are true and what has been added over the years.
@@ShadowPhoenixMaximus Could you imagine walking on stilts for 100 miles in the dead of winter a night and then jumping 12 feet in the air to land on a strangers roof. IDK....
Could be a goat. Goats are known to walk onto roof and depending on if there was a thick layer of ice and how high the snow was that could be the most likely explanation.
Thanks for this post, it's 4am and I am having trouble getting to sleep, this should help relax me and hopefully get some much needed sleep. Great behind the scenes look at how the magic is made. Thanks for all your good work I hope we get to see more of the work that goes into the creation of a story, from selection, research, & script recording to artwork and editing. Maybe you could do a dedicated video on the production, just a suggestion...
This is the kind of story that scares me the most. No one claimed to see a devil man with hooves or any else. Randomly, footprints just appeared in the night and went up to windows and doors.
I like the top secret balloon theory, makes more sense than "Its the devil!". And the light in the church was most likely a phenomenon known as ball lightning, which usually doesnt hurt people, but not much is known about its properties.
Yep. I think the balloon is the most likely answer, depending on exactly how strong those winter winds were that night. I wonder if there are any meteorological records from that period of time that have survived. If we had access to those records and calculated how much the shackles weighed plus how securely fastened the balloon was to the area we could, within a good percentage, confirm if this theory is indeed the correct theory or at the very least plausible.
Only issue I see with the balloon theory is the way the tracks in the snow were laid out in regular intervals instead of being continuous trails one would expect a balloon to leave behind if it was dragging things., and how the tracks allegedly circled around some houses as if something were looking in windows. I will admit that without more evidence than claims and sketches, the tracks could've been less regular. People seeing strange marks in the snow could easily decide on a fantastic origin.
@@ladyshep I don't think it was the balloon either, it was more likely to me given the data provided, that it was prolly a goat or something double stepping it's tracks.
@@ladyshep True. Well then it could always be a goat. The drawings make the prints seem very goatish. I wish we had daguerreotypes of the footprints. Then we could have a forensic expert look at them and determine what animal made them.

A book from Scholastic called "Strange, But True."
Because of footprints? Lol
I may have read the same book!
@@normanrenner4648 I bet you did if you’re around my age! It may have been one of those book order books. 🙂
@@julieduncan1996 YES!!
Good point. I still think it’s plausible but you’re right those marks would have been streaks in the snow instead of distinguishable prints.
It can if the balloon was bobbing up and down as it travelled, but if the trail was as meticulous and methodical as the legend makes it out to be, then probably not. Honestly though, I doubt the validity of a deliberate trail to begin with.

My granny lived in Dawlish, Devon. I visited the places where the footprints went thru Dawlish. My granny told me that apparently, when the footprints were discovered, the farmers' first move was to put their dogs on the trail but the dogs backed away, whining in fear. Oh this kinda hits harder when its like an hour away from where I live..
The shackles from a balloon wouldnt travel through a village without waking people up or damaging windows or buildings, definitely not a balloon.
