      Anybody can google the scholarly Islamic discussions onwife ebeating and see there indeed exists different interpretation mainly because the word has several meanings in Arabic but also the context of the use of the word is relevant. It's not a secret. There are opposing views and the role of culture can not be omitted when people seek to justify violence against women. But I think its best people seek the knowledge themselves.

    A man who condones wife beating is like someone who sets up a wrestling match between a heavy weight and a middle weight, there is little chance of a fair fight, yet he is routing for the bully, in fact putting money on him. This is his mentality. To think people look up to him is highly disturbing and unethical. He will be accountable for his actions.

    Like all abrahamic religions they will never be able to escape the roots of their medieval and backward origins. It is never ok to hit someone unless it is self defence. Woman have never enjoyed being seen as lesser. We are all human beings and deserve equal treatment in all matters. We largely have this in the west and should not be dragged backwards by the musings of ancient peoples.

    • @brothermuhammad6640
      @brothermuhammad6640 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +Liam Thoresen
      Liam there are some issues with your reasoning, please clarify:
      Democracy is older than most religions, should we abandon democracy as a backward ancient practice?
      If a five year old child drowns her two year old sister, should we punish the five year old child like we would an adult?

    • @Shinaro777
      @Shinaro777 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      In regards to your first point the democracy we use today is not the same as such was used by the ancient greeks for example. That would be impractical with our current population size. So even this is not the same as it once was. I did not mean to imply that we should abandon all that came before us. Simply that it is silly that we still use the same stories some of our ancestors used to define our own lives, which are vastly different from theirs.
      In regards to your second point I am unsure where this is coming from. Of course the child is not punished in the same way. However some punishment may still be received depending on the variables. Was it by accident? Child's mental condition etc. However I am unsure how this relates to my points...

    • @brothermuhammad6640
      @brothermuhammad6640 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Liam Thoresen Thanks for the response, I appreciate your objective analysis.
      I agree that some stories from the past are very specific to those people and circumstances. I would be silly to transpose one cultural narrative onto another.
      However, we can benefit from some ancient concepts such as racial equality and religious pluralism. Muslim women are not inferior morally, legally, or politically (such positions aren't based in the religion).
      Rather than being fossilized in the past, Islamic law is constantly renewed to fit well in new times and places - Islamic jurisprudence is dynamic. The fellow featured in the video happens to be an ultra-conservative litteralist, people of such persuasions always represent a tiny minority regarding religious though.
      -
      My second point was based on your statement:
      "We are all human beings and deserve equal treatment in all matters."
      My absurd example demonstrated that equal treatment for all people in all matters would yield unjust results, there has to be flexibility based on the specific circumstances for equity's sake.

    • @Shinaro777
      @Shinaro777 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ah I understand your meaning now although the idea that we are all equal really refers to all human adults. No distinction should be made between them for race, class, gender etc. This of course does not mean children should not be treated with fairness, respect and equality because they should but I appreciate that in certain situations they are handled in a way more appropriate for a younger mind. My statement while still true should be looked at with nuance and not so literally. I would agree that we can often benefit from the ideas of our predecessors and in all honesty I have less problem with the idea of more progressive religious people than the more conservative as you say. However I would propose that the conservatives have a more true interpretation of the religion. I am also still skeptical of the idea of a religions own level of jurisprudence. Especially with such conservatives I find that the more objective and secular law of the land would be far more fair and balanced. Please do not mistake this as a hatred for religion/islam (I converse with Christians similiarly) but I detest the idea of people being treated as less than equals or unfairly.

    • @brothermuhammad6640
      @brothermuhammad6640 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      "No distinction should be made between them for race, class, gender etc."
      Agreed.
      "My statement while still true should be looked at with nuance and not so literally."
      Based on your other response, I got a feeling that such was your position, jolly good.
      "However I would propose that the conservatives have a more true interpretation of the religion."
      Actually, in the Islamic tradition there are many schools of legal thought, all considered equally valid in interpretation.
      Conservatism/literalism has strong appeal in times of confusion and desperation, people always prefer decisiveness to nuance. The Muslim world is in such a state of chaos unfortunately. That being said, the followers of the conservative/literalist school of Islamic law, al-Hanbaliyah, account for only 2% of Muslims. They are heavily promoted by petro-dollars, so they seem to have more clout than they really do.
      We consider diversity of opinion in legal matters as a blessing. This allows different cultures to adopt whichever way suits them best (the historical Islamic legal systems of Senegalese Muslims differed from Siberian Muslims, which differed from Malay Muslims etc.
      The phenomenon of making a one size fits all sharia system, especially from a narrow cultural context and then exporting it to another is an absurd innovation which diverges from tradition of Islamic pluralism.
      " I find that the more objective and secular law of the land would be far more fair and balanced."
      Objectivity is the cornerstone of all legal systems, even religious ones. This is a key principle for establishing truth and implementing justice.
      Secularism however, has some issues. Unlike objectivity which is a principle for establishing truth, secularism is an ideology (not a truth finding method). If a community doesn't subscribe to a certain ideology, would it be fair to impose it upon them by force?
      "Please do not mistake this as a hatred for religion/islam (I converse with Christians similarly) but I detest the idea of people being treated as less than equals or unfairly."
      Your objective evenhanded thinking is admirable, such conversations are beneficial to all involved. You also have my support in endorsing fairness and equality. Social justice is one of the key pillars which a Muslim should strive for.
      "O believers! Stand firm for justice and bear true witness for the sake of God, even though it be against yourselves, your parents or your relatives. It does not matter whether the party is rich or poor - God is well wisher of both. So let not your selfish desires swerve you from justice. If you distort your testimony or decline to give it, then you should remember that God is fully aware of your actions." Quran 4:135

      Asif Khan Really, Asif Khan? You don't support wife beating? Then how do you interpret (or to be more accurate pretend to interpret) Quranic injunctions like Surat Al Nisa (4:34):
      "Men are in charge of women, because Allah hath made the one of them to excel the other, and because they spend of their property (for the support of women). So good women are the obedient, guarding in secret what Allah hath guarded. As for those from whom ye fear rebellion, admonish them and banish them to beds apart, and scourge them. Then if they obey you, seek not a way against them. Lo! Allah is ever High Exalted, Great." (Pickthall)?
      Or a Hadith like this: Sunan Abu-Dawud Book 11, Number 2142:
      Narrated Umar ibn al-Khattab:
      "The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) said: A man will not be asked as to why he beat his wife."?
      I think your favourite Sheikh in this video was explaining this very Hadith at some point!
      Asif Khan, nobody gives a damn what you "think" about wife beating. You are not the prophet of Islam. The man that was the prophet of Islam has already said plainly and clearly both in his Ahadith and in the Quran that a man is allowed to beat his wife and nobody should even ask him why he beat her. The husband has divine sanction to do do so! It was said plainly and very easy to understand. There are many more Ahadith that even narrate how muslim women who had been beaten black and blue came to Muhammed to complain about their violent husbands and seek justice and every time he turned them away and took their husband's side. There is NOTHING ambiguous left there awaiting your "interpretation"!!
      Now on what basis you and the so-called moderate "muslims" read these Ahadith and verses and pretend that Islam doesn't allow wife beating? If you disagree with Muhammed as I do and any civilised human being on this earth would do then stop pretending that he didn't say what he clearly and repeatedly said and didn't mean what he clearly meant and accept that he was not a prophet but a brutal man and a product of his violent and barbaric times and has nothing to offer a 21st century civilised person like you and me and leave this nightmare of a "religion"! Stop whitewashing and re-writing this rubbish!

      Hi.
      My opinion is that you may have copied and pasted quotes out of context and cherry picked a translation that suits your arguement.
      The quran is not something that is easily translated hence why it still exists in its original arabic.
      At no point do I claim I am the prophet of Islam, niether do I force the religion upon you or cause you any hardship.
      Please watch this short video to help you understand an alternate interpretation of Surat Al Nisa 4:34.

      thats how all reporters and journalist make a living, giving false and sensationalised opinion to attract attention, then again you shouldn't judge a man on a 7 min clip which from the 1st minute was trying to portray islam has a negative treatment towards women, all muslims know that is not the case, the problem is the view there giving out on other people which may cause them to have a certain opinion on islam

    A woman's testimony under Shar'ia is worth half as that of a man.
    Sahih al-Bukhari, Witnesses
    Book 52, Hadith 22
    Narrated 'Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri:
    The Prophet (pbuh) said, "Isn't the witness of a woman equal to half of that of a man?" The women said, "Yes." He said, "This is because of the deficiency of a woman's mind."
    Surat Al-Baqarah, Ayat 282
    O you who have believed, when you contract a debt for a specified term, write it down. And let a scribe write [it] between you in justice. Let no scribe refuse to write as Allah has taught him. So let him write and let the one who has the obligation dictate. And let him fear Allah, his Lord, and not leave anything out of it. But if the one who has the obligation is of limited understanding or weak or unable to dictate himself, then let his guardian dictate in justice. And bring to witness two witnesses from among your men. And if there are not two men [available], then a man and two women from those whom you accept as witnesses - so that if one of the women errs, then the other can remind her. And let not the witnesses refuse when they are called upon. And do not be [too] weary to write it, whether it is small or large, for its [specified] term. That is more just in the sight of Allah and stronger as evidence and more likely to prevent doubt between you, except when it is an immediate transaction which you conduct among yourselves. For [then] there is no blame upon you if you do not write it. And take witnesses when you conclude a contract. Let no scribe be harmed or any witness. For if you do so, indeed, it is [grave] disobedience in you. And fear Allah . And Allah teaches you. And Allah is Knowing of all things.

    I think it is from common sense and logic to know that wife beating is NOT okay under any circumstances. Almost any person from any country, culture, or religion will agree with that. No religion should tell people to hit their wives. I had to say "almost any person" because unfortunately there are small minorities of people who would disagree with what I'm saying. They would actually condone that despicable stuff.
