    I couldn't agree more Mark. Spending 100k on a 2 door car, or maybe any car, is not a rational decision. So, if we're not being rational, then it must have an emotional appeal. It must feel cool, unique and special and this just doesn't. I really don't like how BMW is copy pasting interiors. Basically all the models look the same inside, and that's just not good when you have models for which you ask 100k+. They won't feel special enough. If Lexus can give the LC 500 a unique interior, then so can BMW but they are just too lazy in my opinion. I honestly just rather have the Lexus. It has a cool V8, looks super unique inside and out, and it's simply more special. Both have a synthetic driving experience, but the Lexus is just more special to me. It's certainly not rational to spend that much on a car, especially a rather impractical 2 door coupe, but if I will spend that it better be worth it. It better be something that makes me feel cool every time I drive it and every time I get out of it. This doesn't. I really hope modern cars get their shit together because most of them feel so boring they're putting me to sleep. I'm much rather spend my money on a 1990s 8 series and do a full restoration on one and make it pristine. That feels better to drive and it looks better inside and out.

      On one side you have a BMW which, I'd say 50% of car manufacturers try to copy one way or another, rich history with tons of memorable car models. On the other sie you have a Lexus... Zero to some history and made up name with really only one market in which they sell cars, USA. Thanks but no thanks. Since BMW became unaffordable to average Joe they all of a sudden became unreliable, crap cars not worth the cost. Give me a break.

    • @gtmike916
      @gtmike916 4 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      Alec Empire Yeah Lexus actually cares about the average joe which is why most models are still relatively affordable. If BMW didn’t make their cars so damn complex they would actually sell better and last longer. BMW at this point isn’t even a quality brand to me.

    • @alecempire8982
      @alecempire8982 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@gtmike916 it's Lexus. Why should they care about average Joe? There is toyota for that. Bmw may be complex but that's for a reason. Because they have to drive and handle like a BMW which will always be a level up from a Lexus or Cadillac. If you want the best and we can agree that bmw does a lot of things really good if not best in segment, you are going to have to pay for it. Not everybody is trying to rip off everybody else. Bmw simply cost that much.

    I'm watching this in late 2023, thinking about buying one, because now they've depreciated into the high $40,000 range. Seems like a great value for a person like me! In the past, I've had 911s and I've gotten caught up in the competition for more and more power and speed. I'm over it. The negatives described in this video just don't bother me much.

      I paid 54k for a 2021 M850 gran coupe with a 125k bmw platinum extended warranty for 3.5k. It's the exact spec I would have ordered. It was not the best deal but it a fair one. I have had a merc, rovers, and a lexus. The inside isn't exciting, but it's the most efficient cabin i have been in by far.121k was the sticker price, which is overpriced. But 54k with 40k miles with 125k dealer warranty is a value. 4 doors 0 to 60 3.4 that was my personal best is a lot of car. Get one used it's worth it. Open to other's thoughts in comments.

    By Suggestion an Edit- This was an experience I had with this model from BMW, not as much to do with the Brand, one saved my life before, and they can produce one hell of an auto, and on this occasion selling it put food on the table for the week, I am grateful for the market that provides this, on the other hand it gets concerning as the resources it takes to build/sell just one car, the manufacturing, use of natural resources, debts, etc. I love the design and care they have to engineer a near 50/50 weight balance, how you can usually take 75% of whats next to you at a stoplight, I am a fan of all that but, this is a vehicle for the moment it seems, and not one for long term enjoyment, its a machine that requires lots of care, making sure it doesn't get keyed, buying tires after being surprised at how fast they need looking after, the joy of driving can become an expensive hobby. Sometimes its not a thought for some owners, wealthy or not, thats where I think the priorities of building and wanting a car like this can be fun and enjoyable but it can take a toll on the future, I have the honor of being around them daily, Love our customers who drive them, you do make the world go round, some deals make sense, just be cautious about what you consume and take care of what you do. I now return you to your regularly scheduled programming. )
    I was lucky enough to sell one when they first came out, the client had an M3 he was keeping(ended up trading with 16k negative equity) and wanted a mazda CX3 as a winter beater, Since he had BMWs I told him about the M850 now being all wheel drive, so he decided to buy it and drove it home, it was a 2300 lease payment:(, the last time I followed up with him, 1 year into ownership, he had to get rid of it because of divorce, sad. You mean that guy?

    Adjusted for inflation, a 1987 635csi was $100k so this is nothing new for BMW. I think the early 90s 8 series was probably even more expensive. in today's dollars. Both were big, heavy (for their day) GT autobahn cruisers mostly driven by bankers.
    Anyway, I've noticed that Mark tends to get very agitated about expensive european cars and the perceived person who drives them. He kind of spirals into scotty kilmer-esque nonsensical rants at times. The whole thing about the car should only cost 60 (then later he says 40)- really?! Dude- you can barely get a 6 cylinder 4 series coupe for that amount.
    I'm not a fan of this car either, but it's totally worth the price given the engineering and attention to detail.

    • @MrCarGuy
      @MrCarGuy 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are reasons why European cars had such inflated prices in the 80s and 90s. Please study why. You need to look at EU prices to be fair. This car is not nearly as differentiated as the E31 was from other BMW products or even the previous 6 series. 6 series was the flagship before the 8.

      I understand why Jack feels that way. If you put aside the price and look at it as a car, it's a very competent, well engineered and well thought-out car. Almost every argument i heard on the 8 series is the price. Lets not forget the original 8 series was horrendously overpriced back in the 90s and thats why it didnt sell. I'm willing to bet we will be singing this car praises in 20 years. Another case in point, the Z8.

    • @JavonAnonimni
      @JavonAnonimni 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ilovelimpfries Yep, the 8er is great objectively and it is somewhat nicer inside than lesser BMW models. The price is what it is, probably on purpose as to keep it niche. Could have they done more on the interior to distinguish it from other models? Sure. Does it lack character? It does if you are used to older cars, which were louder, rougher, less synthetic and had imperfections you've grown to love over time. But cars nowadays are trying to be the opposite and with emission, safety and other regulations are becoming more bloated, refined and isolated. That's true with all cars, not just the 8er or BMWs in general. And for a vehicle at this price point, Jack said it also, it would be a travesty to be loud and rough (but had "character"). The target buyer wants it to be quiet and loud when needed, that's why you have the fake exhaust, car reviewers need to understand this and get used to it.

      Hard to comprehend what? The 8-series in a V8 trim is a much faster, better handling, with a more spacious interior, better gearbox and a better infotainment system. It is also more rigid and lighter thanks to that carbon core. A NA V8 exhaust note is nice, but it doesn't define the whole car.

    • @JAnx01
      @JAnx01 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@805NAVE That's subjective. Hideous headlamps are almost becoming a Lexus brand value at this point and the interiors are an over styled mess across the board, the LC being a prime example of that. This car is obviously meant for that executive who wants a nice 4 door that has great passing power on the freeway and a ton of technology. Personally I like a car that can get me from point A to point B comfortably, my days of driving a manual were left back in the 90s, and when I'm looking for a smooth comfortable ride the last thing I want to hear is the engine screaming.

    The current 8 series should be named what it really is in disguise, a 6 series, it doesn't look or feel anything like anyone would imagine a true 8 series successor would. We all theorized that the new 8 series would be the i8 with a v12 in the back or something crazy like that in order to be the true BMW flagship. But the 8 series we have, in a weird way, is the BMW flagship. It represents the shift from well engineered, well build cars that were very fun an engaging to drive, to a brand that's just has a badge to flex and you know it's going to be effortless to drive around town or on the highway. Luckily the M2 still exists, but who knows how long they'll still offer an affordable, 'traditional' BMW.

    I bought a 2019 540i with this same power plant and kept it three months. I agree, it was boring. However I traded it not for the 840, but the m850i. The entire character of the car changed. It is a very fast, very competent handling vehicle with the ability to switch over into a luxury glider. It has all wheel drive which is a great advantage over the Lexus LC where I live, allowing me to use it all year. At the price point of $112K there really isn't anything that can match it other than an F-Type, but with way less tech and rough for daily use, the 911 4S is much higher and does not really carry the comfort and tech modes as well. Must admit, I bought a 2019 in 2020, making the price much more palatable. Wish you guys would test the m850i!

    You guys don't get it. This is a halo car for the BM. Many people will drool over this but will then put on their sensible hat on, go into a dealership and buy a 520d or a 530 for 50.000. They will then think they got a deal of a lifetime for getting 90% of the 8-series experience for 1/2 the price.
    BMW is not bothered about not selling these. It is helping build the brand up so that they can sell more 3 and 5 series cars which is their bread and butter.

    Well, what can I say, well done sir. Reviewing and shitting on BMWs is guaranteed to bring views, likes, dislikes and lots of comments. BMW fans will watch it trying to hear something positive about their cars, haters will watch it to validate their negative views. Seems like there’s no middle ground there, people either like or hate BMWs. I think the main issue with this and many other luxury cars in this segment is their cost. MSRP for 840i is very similar to that of the s7, and performance numbers are very similar despite the s7 having nearly an extra 100hp. But there’s not much hate going on for the S7 or other Audis in the geese’s videos. Also, the 840i is not a whole lot slower than the recently reviewed e53 amg, and also has a similar msrp. No hate there either. And the comments about the 840i being so douchey it got keyed - man, this is not the car’s problem, this is these lunatics problem who can’t stand that other people can have nice things. They were taught that you shouldn’t be a tall puppy and if you are, you deserve to be torn down.

    Well, that was the last BMW for Savagegeese…. Although I do agree with the conclusions, I don't agree to talk so disdainly about the clientèle of this car. The whole 'car for rich people' thing could be applied to near enough any Mercedes above a C class, the majority of which won't handle anywhere near as well the 8 series. I also don't get the price complaints; it's a luxury GT, it's not going to be 3-series money. $100k definitely won't get you inside an Aston Martin or Bentley, so it's not as if it's trying to compete with those cars.

    Mark, if you and Jack were given the GranCoupe (4dr) version of the 840i, would you have a slightly different perspective on it? The 2dr 8 series tend to be compared a lot to a 911 but aside from the likes of the M8, I reckon BMW set their priority on 'grand touring' over 'spirited driving' for non 'M' 8 series cars. Maybe I misunderstood what you said in the 'final thoughts' section.

    • @JulianKapa

      Exactly. Even though it's a BMW, that doesn't mean every car they make is designed to be driver-focused. It's not even an M model, or even the M Performance variant. I don't think many people are going to consider an 8 Series when they want a connected driving feel as much as possible, as they would look at the 4 Series.

      Lexus also sells much less of all models total than BMW. You must look at the percentage of total sales.
