IMO, as an owner of this vehicle, you need to carefully spec out the interior to get that "special" feeling. I have dark ash wood trim and it makes a huuuuuge difference. It completely changes the interior by almost entirely getting rid of the piano black, most importantly around the centre console. Literally never used the energizing refresh garbage. However, the massage function is AWESOME and I do like the fragrance (just turn the intensity down). Still smells fresh as fuck after about 8 months of ownership. It's marketed in a lame way but when you live with it everyday, it's awesome. One thing that had huge appeal to us was the fact that you get a convertible vibe with the hard top design. With the sunroof open and the pillar-less windows down, this thing feels like an SL. The heated air scarf extends your windows down season by a month or so. It's interesting to hear you guys discuss who is buying this car, and why one might do so. I'm 32 years old and, while I admit this is quasi-old man spec, my wife and I bought (leased) this car because it really does feel special to us. Having owned a number of 3 series and C class variations, this was such a massive step forward that it absolutely felt worth the extra cash. As someone who grew up with nothing but a used car in the drive way, the chance to jump into this car every day is an absolute dream. It's fast, it's comfy, and it has a presence to it. It's big. It's heavy. It feels that way under hard braking. But man....classy as fuck, quick in a straight line and full of tech. Good stuff.
You can get the center console in all sorts of materials (glossy or matte, open-pore wood, metal, carbon fiber), and all of them look and feel better than the piano black. Feels like an oversight that this wasn't mentioned.

That $97,000 is if you have every option going, which very few people are ever going to do. If you start at $75K to $80K for new, then the book values look more realistic.
Well yea, that’s why these are just luxury purchases and best done on lease. You’re going to spend $ to drive this car, and you’re only going to spend this kind of $ if a) you have enough you don’t care and b) you’re not interested in using that $ to make more $ so you’re okay with the lost opportunity cost. Might as well minimize how much $ you burn while taking enjoying your luxury item and just lease it. If you want affordable or “smart” you probably aren’t the market for a near 6 figure luxury coupe.
@@joeracer302 The way I see using a car. Lease it and enjoy your dollars for the lease period. Pretty much like renting a very nice apartment in New York or a hilltop house in Malibu.
If you can show me a 2017 AMG product for 15 % of it`s MSRP, you`re my hero. And I`m not talking about some beat up, flooded and non-maintained one. With less than 250,000 miles on it.
If they specialize in imports it’s not that crazy. There is no reason to go to a local mechanic because you’ll be getting it services at the dealer. Unless you’re just a professional at making bad decisions.
When I drove the C63 four-door, I fell in love with that car. Tremendous driving car. Does everything well. Only reason I didn't buy it? The C8 Corvette.
This episode legitimizes Jack as if he wasn't already, the master tech and the ultimate researcher.. this merc is absolutely out control in complexity, but I love it..., but I'm also terrified of it. I love the honesty of the future maintenance of the vehicle.. good luck 2nd/3rd owners Jack clearly shows that he does the research on the vehicle and remains bias free, giving an honest review of the vehicle as you both do... by far the best auto channel out there..
Love how honest and straight forward this review was, thank you! Every other video or review about this car is just saying how great it is, or if its a real AMG.
I'd take the LC500 over this crazy complicated 'mild' hybrid nightmare mish-mash of parts. You can count on the Lexus to make glorious V8 noises and deliver smooth effortless acceleration on just oil changes and basic maintenance, while the E53 will literally fall apart after the lease is over.
Guys you do one of the best reviews out there! Tried E53 sedan the other day, felt synthetic but also a bit special due to enormous torque but ultimately too soft and bland. My conclusion? Got a used E63 and put away a chunk of funds for potential repairs, the thrill is there believe me!
@@tylerbetthauser7647 "Have access to the engineers who designed the vehicle." Uhh, no. But they do occasionally fly master technicians over to educate them.
@savagegeese @ 9:20 You mention 'When you have an Aluminum piece, it saves weight, it's more rigid' which is not totally right. Although Al-alloys are lighter than materials such as cast Iron, or steel, its rigidity is far less than any of those. Typical Al-alloy used by German manufacturers is AW- 5754 with a Young Modulus in 69 GPa order, and UTS of 220 to 350 Mpa. While a typical cast iron used by the same manufacturers is GGG40, which displays a Young Modulus of 160 GPa and UTS in order of +400Mpa. Even aviation Al-alloys, regardless of heat treatment, cannot be compared to Ferrit alloys in terms of rigidity. Choosing aluminum in such applications is based upon ductility of the Al- thus ease of production, and lowered unsprung mass.
You can actually get some combined values which help you choose a material: - material density and Young's Modulus (required mass for desired stiffness) - material density and tensile strength (required mass for strength) If your refine that quotient depending on the load condition, you get specific values for that particular condition (e.g. required mass for stiffness in bending is material density divided by cube root of Young's Modulus). For your given example (less is better, units are weird so they can be normalized): - required mass for stiffness in bending would be about 0.66 for "Al" and 1.45 for "GG" - required mass for stiffness in compression/extension would be about 0.39 for "AW" and 0.49 for "GG" So in this case, the "AW" part could be made lighter at the same stiffness for those two load conditions.
@@Remenschneider Thank you for explanation. While what you said is true, the cross section - or geometry - must be specified for this in order to determine the tension in the part. If we negate that element- basically just boil down our argument to material selection for 'one specified' geometry- the only benefit we receive is the weight reduction but rigidity does not increase (( and as u mentioned, with a little adjustment it can be designed to be more rigid with less weight)). As such, the phrase used in the video, ' *Aluminum saves weight and is more rigid* ' could be laid out as ' Aluminum saves weight and allows for optimal design for higher rigidity to weight ratio' in my opinion.
The benefit is in the improved visibility when looking over your shoulder. If it’s a quick check in traffic or a more thorough survey before/while you back up, it makes coupes feel much more nimble or manoeuvrable than their sedan counterparts as they either have the B-Pillar set farther back in relation to the front seats or none at all.
lol. Whut? That's some crazy talk there dude. The C43 is a C class, bad enough, and it's almost worse than that simply because it's evident if you own that car you couldn't afford a real AMG so you got the sexed up C class. Truly, I would take a Honda civic over that because it is honest about what it is and people wouldn't secretly think you're a wanabe baller.
Excellent honest reviews; I like the fact that you are very driver oriented and say what you think; unlike many other reviewers who are out there to praise every car! I became a follower.
Using this video to train my staff to understand the 53 engine more now that we won't have the V8's to sell for a bit, thanks guys..big loyal watcher/ fan..subscribed here and on my personal :)
Yup. Now 45 models also get the panamericana grill lol. This does two things; both of them bad. 1. The 63 owners will feel their grills are less exclusive. 2. People who dislike the panamericana grill now can't purchase the 45 model for the double bladed grill.
What happened to Tech Wednesday? Give it time and it will get an audience. Remember. It's not for the car enthusiast. It's for the tech people who may not know your channel but may stumble across your Tech Wednesday video. P.s. Glad you did an E-Class coupe video. Overlooked car considering there is a more 'modern' C-Lass coupe with similar looks but cheaper price.
This is an amazing review, you went in-depth of everything without bias. All the positives and negatives of the interior, the mechanicals are explained well, and the driving feel is put into words that any driving enthusiast would understand. The only thing left I'd like to see is Turbowski.
Excellent review, thorough and educational! Most of the gimmicks are optional and I'd probably stick with the base audio and avoid the audio navigation pain cause even the higher end Burmester in my AMG sucks compared to the Bowers and Wilkins in my other car. Now I know why it seems to noise cancel at times, thanks for that tid-bit. The performance exhaust on my AMG doesn't pop and burble all the time on queue, so not all the AMG's behave the same. Overall great review, thanks dude.
Awesome review. I test drove this - thinking it will be AMG - it is NOT. You don't get the BEST of the AMG that something like C63 would provide and then it also sacrifices comfort and luxury aspect of E Class. Ended up getting E450 Coupe for 70K almost fully loaded. Enough power and tons of luxury.
Mercedes has mastered the art of overcharging for their vehicles, and this particular example is no exception. So has Porsche, but at least Porsche makes better cars than Mercedes does.
Rabid Sparky Porsche ties Toyota for initial and long-term quality and reliability and value retention is comparable to Jeeps for 911s and best in class for Cayennes. Mercedes and AMG in particular loses value like a Dodge Caravan with mismatched wheels.
I've got a regular e220d coupe and it's absolutely wonderful.....rides beautifully great on fuel, quicker than youd think and looks far more expensive than it is. The E Class is the sweet spot of the range. I think an E400d suits the character of the vehiclr better than the E53 but so long as you avoid the E300 you're on to a winner
As an owner of this vehicle (EU spec, i.e. no perfume difuser and no sport exaust system), your review is PERFECT! (b.t.w, I got the carbon interior: much nicer)
There have been many interiors that he's praised, but he still addresses flaws. I find it refreshing that he's not like every other automotive reviewer. He doesn't just state facts and move on, he actually addresses the things car buyers actually want to know, it's his job to point out the flaws.
This Review is Incredible. The Frequency response graphs are just incredible attention to detail. Thank you for this! For someone who is an audiophile and a car enthusiast I really appreciate the mechanical detail that went into this review, Please keep it up! I actually own a C43 AMG and I hate it. Steering is numb, ride is horrible, road noise is pathetic and the sound quality is garbage (same speakers as the E53). The Engine is alright but mines a 2016 so no pops or bangs. Overall just a very average car with a bad ride. I wish i bought the Jaguar XE S. You should defo consider reviewing it!
you can get that interior in an a class these days. like with about 90% of german cars going up in the model range feels more like getting a different trim for the interior rather than going up a whole segment.
I SWEAR - THE MODERN MERCEDES-BENZ IS THE NEW 'BOAT'. YOU GUYS REMEMBER THAT OLD BOAT COMMENT? It goes something like this: *_"What are the two greatest moments in a boater's life? The first is when he buys his first boat. The second? The day he sells it"._*
@@wiljohn2011 Right and unfortunately all companies have to cut costs to stay afloat now a days. Bummer to read something like this about AMG changing how they go about doing their business now.
I think this car is misunderstood here. Its just a sporty perfect daily. I was lucky enough to own an e class coupe of this generation (but with a smaller engine) and to me its the perfect daily, but that really shows over time and not in a short time review. The interior spec on that test car is horrible. The car feels 10 times more premium and comfy if it had the black open pore wood instead of piano black plastic and aluminum. The infotainment controls are perfect and you quickly get used to them. I understand how its confusing in the beginning, but i love that you can choose how you want to control it. It also makes perfect sense if you know older mercedes controls. They kept that and added new controls to it to give old and young customers all what they want. I heavily prefer that over having just one option like in new audis. Its always just effortless and comfy. The selfdriving assistants are also such a pleasure in traffic jams. I love the dumb massage seats, multibeam light, the burmeister (which sounded perfect to me). It just feels super composed. And I think its freaking beautiful. Sporty but elegant. But just don’t own it out of warranty. Too much tech to fail. And dont let them fool you into thinking its an amg. I personally cant think of a better daily driver.
everyone thinks mercedes are so exotic but after working at the dealer they are just mainstream cars that are 10x more expensive to maintain for a not that great driving experience unless u get the 63 AMG
Great content. Honestly most motoring "journalist" just seem like fanboys of every high end car they review. More like sales people than journalists and that's because of the shady relationship between car manufacturers and the motoring media. I like the fact that this channel points out the shit of these high-end cars in a way that actually matters to real buyers looking at these things and not just fan buying over how fast and good they feel to drive.
Longtime fan of your videos. I've noticed that you don't have reviews of some of the baseline MB sedans (non-AMG). I've liked the fact that you've focused on reliability and repairability while reviewing cars. Am wondering if some of these non-performance MB sedans are any good and worth the money; are they as bulletproof as Lexus? Any reviews in the works?
It’s a “zero cost option” meaning you can select black piano plastic, or pick the option of wood for $0. Yea, it does cost something overall, you’re spending 75k+ on a car, but the option of swapping to wood is a “zero cost option.”
My dream car but so expensive here in Singapore. For just the E300 coupe, its already 230K USD...You guys are so fortunate because of your relatively cheap car prices/taxes
I've been a few 43's, 53's, and 63's. The "fake AMG's" are fun and entertaining cars, but once you get into an E63S... Theres absolutely no going back. There is SUCH a huge difference in the overall experience, you can't explain it
Well, it is what German manufacturer are going. They go with mild hybrid to follow German government policy to reduce emission but keep the driving experience of classic Daimler, VW or BMW. BMW worked with Toyota since late 2006 as Diesel supplier forToyota cars in Europe. In exchange, BMW got hybrid tech form Toyota
I'm a product specialist at a Mercedes dealership in NJ. A lot of the people buying these cars are on the older side, and going over one of these cars with all the technology is pretty difficult. Most of the time I tell them to just connect their phone, and use CarPlay because the user interface of these are not intuitive whatsoever.
This is a Mercedes and this is state of the art. The car was designed for the thinking man who appreciates technology for technologies sake. Is this car for the ordinary person? No way. Most people won't understand the complexity and certainly won't budget for the upkeep of such a sophisticated automobile. I know what's going to happen to some of these. In 7 years, after passing through 3 owners, it will sit on Mel's used car lot and need a ton of maintenance. It's a sad way to end up but there you go.
*_Less is more._* Now that is a short, but sweet, 'saying' that would NEVER, EVER be spoken in or around a Mercedes-Benz factory, a Mercedes-Benz dealership, or a Mercedes-Benz service center. Complexity (especially in re: to a passenger car) just for the sake of being complex is... well, it's basically just the engineer's narcissism being showcased to (& eventually burdening) the targeted consumer. And I see that MB still has (and perhaps always will have) plenty of willing customers that love to be 'punished' financially, as well as to be punished later, via immense inconvenience/wasted time servicing/repairing these 'works of art & design'. Oh and yes, they'll want even MORE money.
@@joeracer302 would be hard in he interim transitional stage. Imagine turbo charger, supercharger, and engine, electric motors, electric assisted various parts, etc. Such a pain.
Imagine your local mechanic trying to fix this thing LOL.
If they specialize in imports it’s not that crazy. There is no reason to go to a local mechanic because you’ll be getting it services at the dealer. Unless you’re just a professional at making bad decisions.

AchillesPhazd my brother, when you get this car it’s all free for the lease. Except tires, wiper blades and oil changes.

When I drove the C63 four-door, I fell in love with that car. Tremendous driving car. Does everything well. Only reason I didn't buy it? The C8 Corvette.
Wow, you just elevated the art of auto review. This is nothing short of outstanding!!
One of the last and one of the most complex internal combustion Mercedes ever made.
The engine is turning out to be very reliable. Nothing really good wrong with them.
LC500 and this car isnt in the same segment. The S class coupe is and the S Coupe is leagues ahead of the LC500
why does anyone have respect for german cars anymore. they used to make cars that lasted forever now theyre putting plastic cam shafts...
That's like comparing Cheetos to foie gras.

Would take the e53 over the lc500 for the infotainment alone...
Guys you do one of the best reviews out there! Tried E53 sedan the other day, felt synthetic but also a bit special due to enormous torque but ultimately too soft and bland. My conclusion? Got a used E63 and put away a chunk of funds for potential repairs, the thrill is there believe me!
I feel sorry for mechanics.

This is why you only take a Merc to the dealership. Their techs are extremely competent and have access to the engineers who designed the vehicle.

You can actually get some combined values which help you choose a material:
- material density and Young's Modulus (required mass for desired stiffness)
- material density and tensile strength (required mass for strength)
If your refine that quotient depending on the load condition, you get specific values for that particular condition
(e.g. required mass for stiffness in bending is material density divided by cube root of Young's Modulus).
For your given example (less is better, units are weird so they can be normalized):
- required mass for stiffness in bending would be about 0.66 for "Al" and 1.45 for "GG"
- required mass for stiffness in compression/extension would be about 0.39 for "AW" and 0.49 for "GG"
So in this case, the "AW" part could be made lighter at the same stiffness for those two load conditions.
Never mention lack of B pillar?
I like this E Class, but for me C43 amg coupe, looks much more special.
I think the lack of B pillar makes it look better and more exotic
The benefit is in the improved visibility when looking over your shoulder. If it’s a quick check in traffic or a more thorough survey before/while you back up, it makes coupes feel much more nimble or manoeuvrable than their sedan counterparts as they either have the B-Pillar set farther back in relation to the front seats or none at all.
they made alot of model so they are start new waiting list and get people in the door...
lol.

I test drove this - thinking it will be AMG - it is NOT. You don't get the BEST of the AMG that something like C63 would provide and then it also sacrifices comfort and luxury aspect of E Class.

Amazing review, great job. love the explanation of the complex Mercedes powertrain
Mercedes has mastered the art of overcharging for their vehicles, and this particular example is no exception. So has Porsche, but at least Porsche makes better cars than Mercedes does.
It's the Stuttgart Tax
Except porsche is way more expensive to maintain and less reliable
Rabid Sparky Porsche ties Toyota for initial and long-term quality and reliability and value retention is comparable to Jeeps for 911s and best in class for Cayennes. Mercedes and AMG in particular loses value like a Dodge Caravan with mismatched wheels.

perfect does not exist
All Mercedes have very similar interiors. Has been like that for 6-7 years. When introduced, people liked them very much and saw this as a plus.
It's like 20 grand more, not double the money.
you can get that interior in an a class these days. like with about 90% of german cars going up in the model range feels more like getting a different trim for the interior rather than going up a whole segment.
But C class interior is not same design
Your paying the premium for the engine like in the c class the c63 will cost way more than a base c300

Most stuff designed before about 1990 is pretty well engineered in my experience, quality went down in favour of gadgets and sales appeal after that.
Looks like a double wishbone with dual pivot front suspension? Would be great to see a deeper look and discussion of the suspension design.
That red stripe at the top of the steering wheel would bother me.
You'll almost certainly be able to spec it without that, like you can on an A Class.
That engine set up is soo cool. Remarkable engineering

My Chevy Cavalier Convetable doesnt have them either
No B pillars definitely translates into more weight if they want to achieve the same structural rigidity as the door though.
The whole idea of the hardtop coupe is style. Outside of a convertible, it is the best cruiser with the windows down.

More like sales people than journalists and that's because of the shady relationship between car manufacturers and the motoring media. Am wondering if some of these non-performance MB sedans are any good and worth the money; are they as bulletproof as Lexus? Any reviews in the works?

FXIIBeaver okay uhm and what has this to do with the fact that you get wood in some mercedes models for free instead of the piano plastic?🤔
It’s a “zero cost option” meaning you can select black piano plastic, or pick the option of wood for $0. Yea, it does cost something overall, you’re spending 75k+ on a car, but the option of swapping to wood is a “zero cost option.”

Hey Geese, any chance you could review a Lincoln Continental? It seems like the last traditional US luxury sedan, and I want to see how you view it.
*_Less is more._*
Now that is a short, but sweet, 'saying' that would NEVER, EVER be spoken in or around a Mercedes-Benz factory, a Mercedes-Benz dealership, or a Mercedes-Benz service center.
