The M850i gets all of the attention but you can get the 840i in RWD. You also save over 200 kilos or 500 lbs in weight. This make the car handle much better and you save money. The V8 sound better but with the $15k you save you can buy a aftermarket sports exhaust if you want more sound from the B58. I wouldn't touch it!

Awesome review! Current 5er owner that was thinking of going over to the 2020 Audi S7, but after happening upon an 840 over the weekend at the dealership, and watching this review, will be staying in the BMW family! The matte white isn't showing as available in the US, so hoping it's an order-able option by the summer of 2020. Definitely going with the inline 6. @@autogefuehl I am talking about 6 series Gran Coupe not GT. It is interesting probably for 6 GC owners to know how much larger inside is new 8 series GC
I am test driving this car next Monday and I will leave some feedback post that drive. Thanks for giving me some very useful and detailed insight in preparation for the test. Meanwhile I am hoping that the GC drives better than the 2 door 840D I have already driven but did not like at all. I found the car to be very cramped and claustrophobic and the rear seats were more like a +2 in terms of their practical useability. The 2 door also had the active steering and in line witha lot of reviews and anecdotes from the dealers I have spoken to I really did not like it. It may be useful for manouvring at slow speed but in normal driving it felt like the car had a tyre blow out, very snatchy feel through the steering wheel. I owned a 6 series GC and it was one of the best cars I have driven so here is hoping.
As promised in my previous comment I am posting some feedback after driving this exact car (minus the active steering) yesterday. In summary, I will sadly not be buying the 8 GC 40i and here is why : The ride is way too harsh and firm. I was hoping BMW were going to soften the suspension for this GT type car compared to the 2 door sportier coupe but, no, it is exactly the same and even the smallest imperfections in road surface could be felt. This is particularly an issue in the UK where for the most part our roads are disgraceful. On the continent where they look after their roads maybe OK. Secondly, even though this car has 2 rear doors getting in to and out of the rear is not easy. I am 5' 10" and I struggled but so did my wife and she is only 5'4" ! Once you are in, the rear is quite cosy - but snug cosy. Thomas is so right about the surprising poor level of comfort and space for a car that is so big externally. On the plus side the car drove and handled very well with that slick straight six petrol engine that had real pulling power delivered effortlessly and smoothly. But for me this car is nowhere near as good a package as the 6 gran coupe was/is.
Excellent video as usual and I love your attention to detail! I recently test-drove an 840i xDrive Gran Coupe similar to the tested vehicle and I absolutely loved how incredibly responsive (and fun) the steering was, even compared to other 2021 BMWs like the 540i or the new M440i. So I was wondering what the "special sauce" was that made the steering so addictive. After watching this I realize it's the "Integral Active Steering", the details of which BMW doesn't really explain in their current literature, so I'm glad you explained it here. I thought it was essentially the M-adaptive steering but as you note, it's combined with rear-wheel steering. However, contrary to what the video implies, the 2021 US ordering guide indicates that it's standard on the xDrive Gran Coupe but optional on the RWD model.
What I’m really interested in the new voice interactive infotainment system is if there is an option to change the voice to male? Almost every voice interactive system found on cars these days have a female voice. Given the voice interactive system is inspired from the voice assistance on smart phones, there should also be an option to change the voice and pitch as well.
Hi Thomas! I'm the owner of a BMW 5 series 530d xdrive (G30) with adaptive suspension (sport, normal, ecopro and adaptive). From a strict sportive driving perspective, would you feel a noticeable difference between this 8 series and my 5 series? Furthermore, i'm considering also a Panamera, so between the 8 series GC and the Panamera is there so much difference in the riding? which feels more sportive to drive? Thank you.
hey! Hm well the 8 series is put a little lower, however the wheel base is longer than in the 5 Series. To be honest, next to styling I dont see a reason for you to change. Panamera and 8-Series come close, both a lot of fun to drive, at the same time they feel different just from the whole impression when driving it on a subjective note.
Tough call. I love both those cars. But first I d check over the individual programmes if I can get either one without animal skin seats :) Then, the A7 is the clearly more practical car as for space inside. And maybe a little bit more comfortable. 8 Series drives better however and has RWD only offer.
Autogefühl you still didn’t say which one would you choose out of 8 series gran coupe or Audi rs7 disregard power, or maybe you can’t say your choice because of advertisement reason.
hey man good driving, the reverse auto-pilot was cool, for the speed test wish you were on the autobahn from Düsseldorf richtung Dortmund then you could have really pressed the pedal to the metal ;-)
I still can't believe why on earth BMW does not include Android Auto... It's so disappointing. I also miss some other options in seats, I really don't enjoy animal skin leather seats and I always go for alternative materials. It's sad that such an important brand doesn't offer alternatives. As for the review, you nailed it! And a big hug to Jonas for holding on on that twisty roads 😆
Another nice review👍, i like it!. The only thing that i didn't like😞was the two engine braces, they look like they belong on some economy car...not very stylish or befitting of such a fine upscale vehicle's engine compartment.
Hi Thomas, I really enjoy your reviews on German cars in particular. I am just curios to why you are opposed to animal skin used in cars. I would appreciate some clarification on the matter as I believe that leather contributes to the motor industry and the economy in general as the animals are slaughtered for their meat and not for the skin as such. In South Africa we produce a lot of leather for the motor industry and exporting worldwide. Keep up the good work, I am in the process of ordering an Audi S6. Regards, Kobus Müller (German decent ca 300 years ago!)
Thank you very much for your interest in this topic. I also bought cars with animal skin leather seats before I did my research and got to know the industry. The most important thing is: With today's modern materials, you have nothing to lose, just to gain. You achieve the same kind of luxury and comfort or even better while having the same or better durability with less impact on humans, animals and the environment. You can use fabric/cloth, microfibre or leatherette. They can be made from recyclables (e.g. from PET-bottles or old fishing nets) or even from plant-based materials (like Pinatex from pineapple leaves or Desertex from cactus fibre or the mixed-plant-based Mirum). Or the Polestar 3 e.g. is using pine oil. And even if you still create a leatherette seat the classic way with petroleum base without a recycling share, the amount of oil being used for that is very little in comparison to how much oil is used for other car parts or how much oil is burned for fuel or heating. By ditching animal skin leather from car interiors, the amount of emissions (CO2e) is reduced by 85 (!) % (www.press.bmwgroup.com/africa-dom-easteurope/article/detail/T0403389EN/on-the-market-from-2023:-bmw-and-mini-models-with-vegan-interiors?language=en). So it is the most important thing you can do to make car interiors more sustainable. Another interesting article is here: www.collectivefashionjustice.org/articles/is-vegetable-tanned-leather-sustainable-lets-do-some-leather-myth-busting#:~:text=Often%20listed%20as%20a%20'pro,the%20method%20of%20tanning%20used. A good example for high-end luxury with ventilated animal free seats is the BMW X7 with Sensfin: th-cam.com/video/1pRNkW9nrrw/w-d-xo.html New leatherette materials can be superior in every aspect: th-cam.com/video/u94YXJ72UTA/w-d-xo.html More and more natural materials are rising: th-cam.com/video/nRSsXEnwHDo/w-d-xo.html or th-cam.com/video/S1aNZeoatmE/w-d-xo.html Also check out what the animal skin leather industry tried to with our channel: th-cam.com/video/nP_CvLlaFlI/w-d-xo.html For seeing how the animals are being treated and transported in the global leather industry, watch this footage: th-cam.com/video/tkjCAmq1_8E/w-d-xo.html Note that the footage is genuine and was recorded by a highly decorated investigative journalist in Germany I know myself personally. Depending on the animal skin grade, the animals are specifically raised for this matter. However even if meat is the first misuse case, the hide remains one of the most profitable body parts. That means: If manufacturers put animal leather in a car and you demand it as a customer, you give your money to an industry that earns money by oppressing humans, animals and harms the environment, you make them more profitable. Alternatively, you could support industries with your wallet which try to improve the sustainability of materials. Also, if you turn the argument around to "meat is the waste of the leather industry" you realize that it doesn't make sense (and is ethically doubtful) to discuss the priority use of individual body parts of mammals. Mind experiment: You are getting slain down or even murdered on the street; would it matter to you if it was for your smartphone or for your purse? We cannot change what we have bought in the past, but with more information and compassion we can change how we decide in the future.
Hi Thomas, great reviews. I am very curious what your advise would be for a daily sporty driver: the cls53 or the 840i-GC and why? My situation is a family w 2 small children and I prefer these designs over the E and 5.
Thanks Stephan! Wouldnt take AMG as daily driver, Suspension too stiff. Rather CLS 400 or 450 or however it is called then in ur market with the same 6cyl but less hp. Still it will be helpful to watch our cls 53 review: th-cam.com/video/U6XiBvVuq7k/w-d-xo.html
840 RWD is a great choice, great engine and lots of fun and suspension is superb. Sadly, BMW only offers animal skin seats in the 8, whereas Mercedes offers alternatives. Tbh i would go to BMW and tell them they should get me the seat in fabric/alcantara or sensatec and then i d sign for the 840, if they refuse then go for the cls
Thanks for ur reply! If animal skin seats is not an important factor, which one would you buy: the cls 450 or the 840i rwd gc and why? Is the advanced interior of the merc more pleasant than the bmws and are the massaging seats and autonomous driving a big plus compared to the bmws? I appreciate the effort and keep up the great video's we enjoy here at home! Stephan
Cheers! Well animal skin is always an important factor... see why: th-cam.com/video/nP_CvLlaFlI/w-d-xo.html The inbuilt tech is somewhat comparable with Merc and BMW
Great review and an awesome production considering such a grey day! After seeing the RSQ7 feels it looks so much better, interior more comfortable and trunk space way better.
Nice review and a really nice car. I need to point out that more sustainable surface material really doesn’t make much sense….unless you are a vegetarian. I would argue that natural leather is much more sustainable and good for the environment as opposed to plastic and man made materials. So my humble suggestion is to perhaps not emphasis it multiple times. This car is probably more pitched to the middle aged executive as opposed to new age youngsters and they would find it more luxurious in natural leather. BMW is aware of this and there is a reason for them to choose this material in the product.
Thank you very much for your interest in this topic. Please tune in to what the animal leather industry tried to do here with our channel: th-cam.com/video/nP_CvLlaFlI/w-d-xo.html In general, depending on the animal skin grade, the animals are specifically raised for this matter. However even if meat would be the reason no.1 in other cases, the hide remains one of the most profitable body parts. That means: If manufacturers put animal leather in a car and you accept it as a customer, you give your money to an industry that earns money by oppressing humans, animals and destroys the environment, you make them more profitable. Also, if you turn the argument around "meat is the waste of the leather industry" you realize how biased the argument is. After all, would you care for which exact body part you would be murdered? Or imagine someone robs you on the street and beats you to death - would it matter to you if it was for your Smartphone or for your purse? The animal agriculture industry occupies 2/3 of all farm land on this planet which cannot be used for direct human nutrition then. That is extremely inefficient. The no.1 cause for deforestation is the animal industry. It is also one of the biggest contributor to climate change. The amount of land, resources, energy and water being used is beyond imagination. If you are interested in how the animals are being treated and transported in the global leather industry, watch this footage: th-cam.com/video/tkjCAmq1_8E/w-d-xo.html Note that the footage is genuine and was recorded by a highly decorated investigative journalist in Germany I know myself personally. For the alternative, you can either use artificial fabrics which can be made from recyclables (we have already shown a lot of vehicles that use great fabric seats from PET-bottles etc.) or more and more also from plant-based materials (like Pinatex or Desertex or Miriam). And even if you would create a seat completely with petroleum without a recycling share, the amount of oil being used for that is nothing in comparing just to once fueling up your car. By ditching animal skin leather from car interiors, the amount of emissions (CO2e) is reduced by 85 (!) %. So it is the most important thing you can do to make car interiors more sustainable. In practical reasons, fabric or microfibre seats are just more useful. You do not sweat in summer and it is not cold in winter. And if you want the slick look or something to wipe clean easier, that is possible with animal free leatherette, even in ventilated options. And there are also new leatherette materials available which are superior in every aspect: th-cam.com/video/u94YXJ72UTA/w-d-xo.html More and more natural materials are rising: th-cam.com/video/nRSsXEnwHDo/w-d-xo.html or th-cam.com/video/yG3z7m6UqNg/w-d-xo.html Using animal skin on seats is a major issue of animal rights, human rights - and after all it is just common sense what is better both for the environment and just more practical and more luxurious for the customer. We cannot change what we have bought in the past (that also counts for ourselves of course!), but with more information and compassion we can change how we decide in the future.

Maybe u can compare better then
hello thomas nice review thanks, for my taste the bmw looks better than a porsche panamera but the design from the new audi RS 7 is killer.
cheers!
@Autogefuhl do you prefer this bmw 8 series gran coupe or the new Audi rs7 if you were to choose which one would you choose? And why
Tough call. I love both those cars. But first I d check over the individual programmes if I can get either one without animal skin seats :)
Then, the A7 is the clearly more practical car as for space inside. And maybe a little bit more comfortable.
8 Series drives better however and has RWD only offer.
Autogefühl you still didn’t say which one would you choose out of 8 series gran coupe or Audi rs7 disregard power, or maybe you can’t say your choice because of advertisement reason.
Hat der hintere Mittelsitz einfach keine Nackenlehne?! Viel Spass bei Frontalaufprall = Genickbruch?
hey man good driving, the reverse auto-pilot was cool, for the speed test wish you were on the autobahn from Düsseldorf richtung Dortmund then you could have really pressed the pedal to the metal ;-)
I will buy this car in 2 years from now!
I will buy this car in 10 years from now xD
Did you buy it?
@@YungMerlyn I was a bit too optimistic, maybe in the next 2 years 🥲
@@ENDI-DJ good luck bro. You can do it!

why is the frontgrill so small ?
Also always the coupe over the 4door ✌🏾
I still can't believe why on earth BMW does not include Android Auto... It's so disappointing. I also miss some other options in seats, I really don't enjoy animal skin leather seats and I always go for alternative materials. It's sad that such an important brand doesn't offer alternatives.
As for the review, you nailed it!
And a big hug to Jonas for holding on on that twisty roads 😆
hehe =)
And thanks for the support!
Another nice review👍, i like it!. The only thing that i didn't like😞was the two engine braces, they look like they belong on some economy car...not very stylish or befitting of such a fine upscale vehicle's engine compartment.
Cheers!
Who was the dude with the sunglasses during the launch at the beginning?

Hi Thomas, I really enjoy your reviews on German cars in particular. I am just curios to why you are opposed to animal skin used in cars. I would appreciate some clarification on the matter as I believe that leather contributes to the motor industry and the economy in general as the animals are slaughtered for their meat and not for the skin as such. In South Africa we produce a lot of leather for the motor industry and exporting worldwide. Keep up the good work, I am in the process of ordering an Audi S6.

Stephan
Cheers!
Well animal skin is always an important factor... see why:

The inbuilt tech is somewhat comparable with Merc and BMW
840i Gran Coupe starts at 227.650 EUR in Denmark.....but I can understand you think 90k is expensive ;)

How tall are you? thats a big factor
What’s the colour?
Looks awesome

The 840i GC looks like a more pretty version of the 640i GT, but not as practical.
Wouldn’t a Volvo Polestar 1 be a better choice in this vehicle class?

Great review and an awesome production considering such a grey day! After seeing the RSQ7 feels it looks so much better, interior more comfortable and trunk space way better.
What the fuck is a rsq7
I have this exact car ❤
Nice review and a really nice car.
I need to point out that more sustainable surface material really doesn’t make much sense….unless you are a vegetarian.
I would argue that natural leather is much more sustainable and good for the environment as opposed to plastic and man made materials. So my humble suggestion is to perhaps not emphasis it multiple times.
This car is probably more pitched to the middle aged executive as opposed to new age youngsters and they would find it more luxurious in natural leather. BMW is aware of this and there is a reason for them to choose this material in the product.
Thank you very much for your interest in this topic. Please tune in to what the animal leather industry tried to do here with our channel: th-cam.com/video/nP_CvLlaFlI/w-d-xo.html

If you are interested in how the animals are being treated and transported in the global leather industry, watch this footage: th-cam.com/video/tkjCAmq1_8E/w-d-xo.html
Note that the footage is genuine and was recorded by a highly decorated investigative journalist in Germany I know myself personally.
And there are also new leatherette materials available which are superior in every aspect: th-cam.com/video/u94YXJ72UTA/w-d-xo.html
More and more natural materials are rising: th-cam.com/video/nRSsXEnwHDo/w-d-xo.html or th-cam.com/video/yG3z7m6UqNg/w-d-xo.html
Using animal skin on seats is a major issue of animal rights, human rights - and after all it is just common sense what is better both for the environment and just more practical and more luxurious for the customer. We cannot change what we have bought in the past (that also counts for ourselves of course!), but with more information and compassion we can change how we decide in the future.
Hey Thomas , do you recommend the M seats or the normal comfort ? I m interesed in buying a 840xi gran coupe 🤗. It will be a daily car. I like the M sport seats but I tested a M5 and the seats are a bit hard and they look the same like the 8 you tested. Thanks
Yes go for comfort seats. And also file in customer wish for non-animal seating that they notice change
@@autogefuehl yes.... I love the alcantara on my x6....don t understand why they don t put it on the 8 , amg gt has it..
