yeah exactly, it's almost like the guys in infotainment design department are apple users and they didn't bother to include android auto and the engineers who worked on developing the app for unlocking and locking of the car are android users and they didn't bother with apple... How did this even get approved by BMW.
Apple phones are incapable of unlocking the car because NFC is restricted to payments only on their ecosystem. So BMW should just stick it up and put android auto on their infotainment system.
The reverse steering assist would actually be really useful for me. I have a VERY narrow entrance tunnel to the courtyard of my house. There is virtually no gap either side when driving through - to be able to allow the car to reverse out for me would be perfect. Turning around in the courtyard is really difficult. So many people have scraped their bumpers squeezing through - me included.
Brilliant video. So refreshing to see a review without the snobbish, over-professional, dated approach. Fun, and mentions things the typical viewer would like to know.
The way the seat change shape, and support your back and come in to hug you at the sides is cool... It's the exact same feature I had on my 1995 Ford Probe
Hey Matt, you really have to try all those features - the auto park is great and the reversing assistant invaluable when backing down a winding driveway on a dark night. My G20 330i M Sport has all those features you get on the 850i, including Laser headlights but at a fraction of the price. I believe that BMW don't trust Apple to open and lock their cars so the automatic walk up/walk away feature is good as you don't even need to touch a key. If you don't use indicators you get a vib through the steering wheel.
My wife and I have been looking at houses lately, and we have a BMW with the backup assistance. It is really useful when backing out of 40 different driveways you are not familiar with. Only thing you have to remember is to stop before the end of the driveway, otherwise it will put you in the road turned the way you were when coming in, which is a doh-moment if you are on a dead-end.
I genuinely enjoy this channel.. gives me a lot of ideas for mine but the content is amazing. I Love the original 8 series from the early 90's, but this is also gorgeous. Glad you loved messing about with it for 6 months.
Matt, awesome wrap up of your time with the 850i. I was quite close to getting one a couple of months ago but there were a couple of things that put me off. I was given the car for 2 days by the dealership and when I returned it I had an average of 9mpg. I may have ragged it a little. I have also have two little ones and the rear seats could not accomodate them and their booster seats so that was a big no no from the missus. I am keen to check out the m8, but alas neither of those two sticking points mentioned above will be alleviated. But bloody hell was it an intoxicating drive.
This is design is so good. I like how the air outlet on the side of the car behind the front wheel slants down unlike the the one slanting up on the 4 coupe. That with the shape the side window gives a really pleasing side profile.
The parking and reverse assistant I use all the time, both great features. Car is longer than it should be I reckon. I turned gestures control off, steering wheel is easier. Beautiful car overall for money
reversin assistant: you never use it indeed. Until you are screwed and need it once and they you are so glad you had it ^^ (aka my grandma's house has a 1cm margin to park)

Looked at one at the dealership and the cockpit is more cramped than an S2000 but it’s 3 X’s as heavy. It’s like putting an F1 cockpit in a Cadillac Brougham-sized car.
I'd still take the diesel 840D, the one Matt used to get to his France ski trip (oh the innocence of 2019, traveling, skiing).. It does 35 mpg while this is a 25 mpg car.. I know, I know..People buying these cars don't care about the mileage but why BMW doesn't produce only M8 and this M 850i? Obviously people do care what mileage they get. That 840D even sounds great, nothing what you would expect from a diesel. And in the end, it's way cheaper so you can split the difference with the added equipment...
I know I’m a year late but finally! After all the car journalists make fun of the gesture controls like it’s a gimmick someone says the truth that you use it. I have a 2016 750i and I use it all the time. I almost never use the other controls

Cars don't need to display the license plates because it ruins the beauty of a good sporty design. A technological solution is needed.

It is better to easily be able to identify the vehicle for safety. If all cars have it, nobody can make fun of your car for having it on.
