    The magic of the Beach Boys makes everyone young and 18 again! Just what the young people of this Nation the U.S. A. need today and hope to rejuvenate our American Summer Spirit , surfing, pretty girls on the beach, cool cars, good hamburger stands, lemonade or root beer floats, Coca Cola, hot dogs, cotton candy and great music to dance to. Fun, fun, fun etc. swimming and sunbathing.

      Towards the end of his life Dennis was a liability to the band. His drinking & drugging destroyed him. He started an affair with a teen niece of Mike Love prompting the band to withhold royalties in an attempt to force him to get help. I saw a 1981 show where he was sadly drunk & throwing bottles of beer into the audience. He thought he was entertaining but it was awful.

    What a GREAT day so glad I attended with my girlfriend who would become my wife. I remember getting there at dawn and walking through the park to JFK Stadium and this guy was playing guitar on a bench as we walked by on our way in. Then Joan Baez introduces him and he opens Live Aid to a crowd of over 100 thousand so clear a memory like it was yesterday we were all saying at the time that it was so cool to have seen him earlier that day. Live Aid was a seminal moment in music history and we were there!!!

    It’s weird to remember that at this time, The Beach Boys were only like 18 years past their prime, probably seen as a washed up bunch of has-beens.
    The band is so canonized now, and they’re practically treated like ancient music that’s been passed down through the ages. Not that I don’t love them, it’s just strange to think about a time when they weren’t this classic shining thing on a pedestal.

    Carl calls 'Mikey go!' for Mike Meros to launch into his keyboard solo. Cameraman crosses to the drummer (Mike Kowalski by the looks of it), missing the solo.

    The remaining Beach Boys that are still alive came to my county fair a little while back. They were my favorite band at the time and it was a truly amazing moment

    Countless number of hit records and one of the all time great songwriters in Brian Wilson you would think they would have sold more records than they did
    but they aren't even in the Top 200 best selling artists of all time.

    I'm going through guitar rock and roll history right now, starting with Bill Haley and His Comets, to Elvis, to The Beatles, to Dick Dale and The Beach Boys, to the Rolling Stones, to The Who, to The Kinks and The Yardbirds, to Led Zeppelin, to Jimi Hendrix, to Robert Smith and the Cure, to Johnny Marr, to Kurt Cobain.
    I'll post a link to the playlist:
    At least, that's the road map. Jumping in from mostly 90's stuff

    • @garyparata2885

      Not quite. Glen Campbell served a four month stint in late 1964 replacing Brian on BASS, and only for live performances. Then Bruce Johnston took over in early 1965. In fairness, Glen did play with the Wrecking Crew on 12-string guitar in later recording sessions with the Beach Boys, but he rarely played lead guitar.

    • @StvMcQueen1
      @StvMcQueen1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You people are idiots! It is well documented that Glen Campbell did tons of studio work and was on many of the Beach Boys records. Look it up!

    Saw them in ‘77, ‘78, & ‘81. It was like a ritual; everyone knew all the lyrics to every song. Much of their recordings were 2 & 1/2 minutes long. They played for 2 hours with a break after 1. They played every. damn. song. By the end most of the audience was in a frenzy. One gig had folding chairs! 8 or 9 thousand people standing on folding chairs, dancing in place, singing their lungs out. It was something to witness. All over a bunch of songs from a defunct genre pushing 20 years old. Try pulling THAT off with an audience that wasn’t even born when your first record charted.
