- USA For Africa performing the Finale at Live Aid in front of 100,000 people in the John F. Kennedy Stadium, Philadelphia USA on the 13th July, 1985. The event was organised by Sir Bob Geldof and Midge Ure to raise funds for the Ethiopian famine disaster. Broadcast across the world via one of the largest satellite link-ups of all time, the concerts were seen by around 40% of the global population.

Actually it wasn’t a happy place ….. that’s why they performed this song …. In actual fact starvation was everywhere on the planet in the third world which was vast…. Africa …. Central and South America … the warlords in places like Uganda were murdering people like grass being cut on the lawn!

I haven’t seen this performance since I was about 40 feet from the stage, just over 35 years ago. My friends and I were just 16 and 17 years old. We were all exhausted after an incredibly hot day full of highlights. I didn’t leave our spot once. Something that’s unthinkable now. Best concert of my life.
That is far more cool than you think, know, and realize. I wish documentation on film could be done of people who were there giving their recounts of it. What an alternative reality we live in now. I am the most positive person in the world and I have such great fears for what's on the horizon. God save us.

Justice said we broke His perfect law - causing the world's previous perfection to be destroyed - and therefore we deserve Hell (like a punishment in any legal system but this is eternal as His perfect law is eternal too). Don't think you fit in that category? Ever done one of these?: lying, stealing - regardless of how small the object EVER, hating others - which is murder in God's perfect law, lusting (plus God sees our entire thought life). Justice says "the soul that sins shall die" - if we break one in thought/word/deed it's as if we're guilty of all of them. Quite simply, living by the law (which is doing everything perfectly) is impossible for sinful humans
. The law shows us that 1. We will die in Hell if we fail to follow it and 2. We cannot save ourselves BUT, 3. God's perfect, immovable law points us to Christ, who followed and fulfilled the law in thought, word and deed perfectly in our place. He did what we couldn't and did it on our behalf. He was then sentenced to death on a cross, and took our personal punishment for our sin, paying our penalty (like paying our fine) completely FOR us, and has given us freedom.
If we turn from the sins we have committed and repent (pursue the opposite direction of love through Christ) He will, overtime, recreate us back into that previously perfect image through The Holy Spirit which Jesus sends to all who accept Him as their personal Lord and Savior of their life. It's not about following the law - perfectly, as it's impossible - it's about letting Christ in to guide and teach you and obeying Him through His power (not ourselves as it's impossible without depending on His power and instruction).
He is our substitute in His life, death and resurrection. He essentially rewrote history in our place so that, if you believe in Him, it will be as if you had never sinned if you accept Christ's death as our own in our place.
He is in Heaven right now preparing a place for us so that He can take His faithful, believing children home with Him when He returns. He will ressurrect us from death when He returns, giving mercy to those who accept His love, instruction and teachings in their life, and give justice to those who refuse it.
He doesn't want ANY of us to go to Hell and die for continuing in evil and rejecting His way to life, thats why He died FOR us. Hes giving EVERYONE a chance, He wants everyone to take the free gift of salvation from Hell. He wants us to be His and begin to follow His life of love and service through His power and abiding (staying) with Him. So long as we keep our hearts near to Christ through His strength, strive to follow His will of perfect love revealed in the Bible, and let Him lead in the midst of (very certain) pitfalls and struggles, we will, in time, win the ultimate victory over sin, pain and DEATH through Christ. Even if you are willing to be made willing, pray for Jesus to come in and He will do what we can't. Give us The Holy Spirit who will guide us in the right way.
NOTE: You are NEVER too sinful or messed up that God cannot turn your life around through Jesus. EVER

Legendary performance. I maybe old now looking back but I'm glad I was there in the summer of 1985 as a high school kid watching these iconic stars in their prime and some sadly no longer with us. Nothing will beat the atmosphere and build-up of this concert and the Live Aid concert in London earlier that July day on the most serious of situations in Africa and tackling it head-on with no nonsense that i can imagine today's stars would gripe about who goes on first and last etc.

People just don't realize how hard it is to sing with many that can't sing very well. I think the Greats did good and I like the facial expression on Dionne Warwick who seems to enjoy hearing Patti's voice soring like it did when most were hating.

I don't remember this. I was five. But I've become so fascinated with this concert. All of the most popular singers of the time donated their time to help the world end hunger. There were a few egos, but it was a lovely experience.

We were all truly blessed in 1985, to witness simultaneously ' the first, the biggest and the loudest Jukebox booming on both sides of the Atlantic'. A once in a lifetime experience, where the whole world participated in raising funds for famine in Africa.

I parked my car across from the Navel Hospital at 6 AM that day, made my way over to JFK. By the time they were all on stage in this video? I was totally wasted as well, beat up from the Sun and Beers. On top of that? My car was impounded when I got to where I parked it. Wound up hopping the El to the Terminal. But I did get to see some of the greatest bands and singers in the World.
"Do They Know It's Christmas" in the U.K. stage sounded much better. And this from a fan of "We Are the World."

It was her turn to sing, and she was screaming on the microphone. It was so loud. So overwhelmingly loud. There were at least 12 mics onstage, and the sound guy had to be trying to figure out what mic she was on to turn it down. It was hilarious.

said We Are All Part of God's Big Family the world stopped turning. By the first chorus 100,000 people were moving in a wave ike motion. Sometimies once in a lifetime the energy produced by the performance is sopowerfel that can shake up our own soul. USA for Africa produced that type ofenergy. 35 years later I still get that soulful feeling. and I tear up. We are the world.

@4.10 Ms. Patti takes this song to a high level, so up lifting and energetic. I think its one of the few things that had been missing in this performance. She did the same thing or even better than her friend Cindy Luper did in the original performance. The problem people have with Ms. Patti is she out voices all the others, but that isn't her fault. She is gifted that way. I live her Vocals tho better expressed in solo performances

Live Aid '85 takes me back to Maywood & Melrose Park, Illinois, where I lived, where my dad worked,
in the mid '80s. I always play this song on TH-cam when I visit these adjacent Chicago suburbs.
As we know, if a stage is filled with professional singers and they sing a song together, then only ego is on that stage. Everyone wants to stand out.
