You never doing, you probably didn't even like them because it probably was your parents music, then you grow up & start to realise music is universal.
There were many artists i didn't l Iike that much because my parents listened to it. I remember Johnny Cash was one of them. I'm not sure about the Beach Boys but I do know I like them a lot more now.
Then there was Elvis. Grandma loved Elvis, always played him. I hated Elvis, probably because of that
I've had to discover Johnny Cash, June Carter, Elvis & many others fot myself & I really love & enjoy them.
Hindsight is great isn't it, all these artists were there all the time. I only wish when I was younger that I was mature enough to enjoy all this music with my parents and Grandma but I wasn't.

    • @gavinkitchen1472

The announcer knew who each member was, if he didn't already know he would of done his research before ths performance.
I like how he introduces them by getting them to introduce themselves.
This is for TV, & it being their first UK - TV, performance not everybody watching this would of known all the members, so i thought that was great. The Ringo bit was a joke, but didn't do anything for me either way.

So many negative comments about Dennis’ drumming skills- remember his mom wanted him in the band and the other band members basically said well all other instruments are taken- you play the drums! He was a teenage kid and a self taught drummer- he got a lot better over time. AND let’s not under estimate how many BB fans came to see him specifically increasing their popularity! He was the only true surfer so are you going to rip on the other guys for being surfing posers? I love Dennis- he gave the band attitude and sex appeal and certainly helped with the overall BB sound. So what if he was not the best drummer in the world?

    • @artvandelay0073
      @artvandelay0073 5 ปีที่แล้ว +19

Goodbye Girl1 // Dennis Wilson was actually one of the reasons that I took up the drums as an instrument. His drumwork on their hit songs is pretty tame, but he did record a roughly two-minute drum solo called "Denny's Drums" on the Beach Boys "Shut Down, Vol. 2" album from 1964. I've added a link to it below:
      th-cam.com/video/ARpf2zaaxD0/w-d-xo.html
At the time, surf drummer Sandy Nelson was a big influence on Dennis' style of playing drums.

It constantly baffles me how they could make so much music (live) with only 5 people! Obviously, it's the vocals but quite often the music is barely in the mix and they still sound huge. This is a super performance both with the sound and vocals. I love it when they mess up the opening to "When I grow up to be a man"! It illustrates just how difficult it is to even start a song like that!

No? Check out the history of "Pet Sounds".
"Rolling Stone noted that the percussion in the album included sleigh bells, timpani, güiro, vibraphone and bongos, previously unused in rock music. The session musicians used Coke cans, water bottles and orange juice jugs for percussion."
Might not have had "digital" in 1966, but Brian used everything but the kitchen sink, and he used that too...

Mattley Crue Really tho. Considering Brian played 1 note on the bass and they start with that 4 part harmony right away must be so hard. And I bet they had really bad monitoring so they can't hear themselves well. They certainly didn't have in ear monitors at that time.

This performance is awesome! Maybe the audio systems were different in the UK or more likely positioned their microphones closer to the bass drum, therefore the sound is very "British Beat" so popular in America as well! This version of the song "When I Grow Up" sounds way better than the studio recording in my opinion. Being a huge Beatles fan I enjoyed their beat sound in England.

I didn't really give The Beach Boys much thought until I was older and I gave them another listen. It was Pet Sounds that made me realize they were more than beach music.

Connie Charley Dennis Wilson was the Beach Boys drummer from the start. He sang background harmonies, and also lead vocals on some of their tracks. He later developed as a pianist and song writer in his own right, and released the album “ Pacific Ocean Blue”, which is well worth a listen. Try to find the documentary “Dennis Wilson, The real Beach Boy”. It was broadcast several years ago on UK’s Channel 4, I think. Really sad to see his decline. I still listen to the Beach Boys regularly and saw what may have been the final concert featuring the 5 surviving original members at Wembley Arena in September 2012.
