    @Nick-sx6jm 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    Your velocity numbers are very off if they were all 140 gr bullets. The 6.5-300 should be up around 3400 fps and the Nosler should be around 75 fps less (> 200 fps faster) which makes it seem like your not getting as much as you are when stepping up.
    Overall though these are all magnums and barrel life should be pretty similar so why not go big at that point and get a 6.5-300.

      Because most people can’t afford to pay $100+ for boxes of 20. Even reloading those cartridges is significantly more expensive than other more common options. If my money was burning a hole in my pocket, I would go with those big boy rounds as well.

    This is easy: 6.5 PRC without a doubt. It's by far the best balanced design. I am really looking forward to more availability on this side of the Atlantic. It will make a perfect mountain hunting cartridge in Europe where the 6.5's have always been among the most popular, especially when chambered in the traditional lightweight single shot rifles. No really big animals either on the higher peaks. I have never considered the 6.5 Creed because it is pretty much like the 6.5 Swede for hunting and I consider both as 300 yards hunting cartridges. Generally speaking the 6.5 mm is my preferred choice for game up to 250 lbs. On larger animals I prefer a bigger caliber. So the 6.5 PRC appears to fall in a nice spot for me.

    6.5-300 is definitely my vote! Seems like the numbers were cherry picked a little bit. Using the 127 grain Barnes you have very different numbers that wouldn’t quite match the narrative. Felt like the 6.5-300 was undersold due to some bias. All great calibers though. I just prefer the versatility of the 6.5-300 myself. Thanks for the videos though. Always love to hear your opinion.

      I read your comment after having posted mine. I said the same thing. He's under selling the 6.5-300. I've also said, this is all highly dependent on the application. Where are you hunting? Is it open terrain? If you're hunting White-Tails in an agricultural field with woods on all 4 sides and your longest shot may be 150 yards, then you don't need a 6.5-30 Weatherby, but if you're hunting Mountain Goats in British Columbia and you may not be able to get any closer than 600+ yards, you're most assuredly going to want the added reach of the 6.5-300.

    @gsh341 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    I own a 6.5 Creedmoor and just can't see any reason I would get rid of it for the 6.5 PRC.
    My main concern isn't getting maximum velocity or energy out of the round. It's having a good shooting rifle that can kill deer. The 6.5 Creedmoor does that. While it may not have the short range power of my 308 Win, it has longer maximum range and less recoil. It's not as fast as my 243 Win out to 400 yards, but after 400 yards it has more velocity due to better BC. It has more power than the 243 Win at all ranges.
    Also, I can load it with a 95 grain VMax for varmints (3,300 fps), a 147 for deer and everything in-between. I also worked up a 123 grain SST light load that has a MV of 2,700 fps. Very light recoil that is perfect for a young shooter, but has enough power to kill deer out to 500 yards.
    It's just a solid rifle that's good for small to medium game.

      The Creed is a great little cartridge when used within it's limitations. Looks like you have that figured out. I believe this cartridge war is about finding one that's good for elk, deer, and long-range targets. All while balancing recoil, cost, and availability. The Creed just lacks the power to be a reliable elk hunting round so it doesn't stand much of a chance here.

    • @gsh341
      @gsh341 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@mqeqeshe1 What's interesting is that a lot of people have no problem using a 308 Win or 30-06 for elk, but don't realize that the 6.5 Creed actually has similar energy and better velocity.
      For example, the common wisdom is that a round must have 1,500 ft-lbs of energy at impact to kill an elk efficiently and 1,900 fps of velocity to expand reliably.
      A 308 Win shooting a 178gr ELD-X will hit 1,500 ft-lbs at about 425 yards. A 30-06 shooting that same bullet will run out of energy at 525 yards and the 143gr 6.5 Creedmoor will drop to 1,500 ft-lbs at 375 yards.
      SO if you're not shooting over 375 yards, they will all do just fine.
      Other people think that 1,000 ft-lbs if the limit.
      Using the same ammunition as the last example;
      the 308 is good to 475 yards (runs out of velocity)
      the 30-06 is good to 550 yards (runs out of velocity )
      the 6.5 Creedmoor is good to 600 yards (runs out of velocity, not energy).
      It's also worth remembering that people do kill elk with bows and arrows.
      So the 6.5 Creedmoor is plenty good to at least 375 yards.

    • @mqeqeshe1
      @mqeqeshe1 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@gsh341 Nice comparison on all the numbers. I have no doubt the 6.5 Creedmoor is capable of killing an elk at 375 yards, I just think your odds of wounding or losing that animal is much higher when compared to a bigger caliber. The one number that you're missing is frontal area. A bullet transfers energy to it's target via the surface area on the leading end. The 308 Winchester has 36% more frontal area so its a lot more effective at transferring energy. If a 6.5 and a 30 caliber bullet arrive on target with 1500 ft lbs apiece they will not do equal damage. A bigger pipe flows more water, a bigger engine makes more power, and a bigger bullet transfers more energy. This is why most African countries require a minimum of .375 caliber for dangerous game. There are several .30 and .338 caliber cartridges that carry more energy than the 375 H&H but they lack the frontal area to efficiently convert that energy into tissue damage.

    • @gsh341

    • @JCTaylor21
      @JCTaylor21 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It also depends on the application. If you're hunting White-Tails in timber and your shots are going to be 70, 80, 130 yards, do you need a 6.5-300 Weatherby Magnum? No. But if you're traveling to Tajikistan to hunt Markhor, you've spent 3 years planning the hunt and spent $150,000 on it, you sure as hell are going to want the 6.5-300 over any of the other options. You're going to want those 200-250 yards of added effective range the 6.5-300 is going to give you. Or if you're hunting Pronghorns in Eastern Wyoming where ranges can be 700-800 yards, you're going to want that 6.5-300 Weatherby.

    6.5 PRC and 6.5 x 284 is the same performance for reloaders. I have loads that get 140 grain class bullets to 3100-3150 fps. The 140's don't shoot that accurate at that velocity though. 2950 fps is the sweet spot for accuracy. 6.5 Creedmoor is easy to load to 2800-2850 fps with 42. 0 grains of H4350 and it can be shot out of an AR-10 while fitting in the AR10 magazines. You get a comparable load in a .260 Remington and it won't fit in the magazine. 6.5 RPM is cool because you can rebarrel Grandpa's 30-06 and shoot off the same bolt. The 6.5 PRC requires a magnum boltface and the RP will beat the PRC by a bit. 26 Nosler and 6.5-300 Weatherby are top fuel dragsters.

Hornady 7th shows a 140gr @ 3,100 with 77.3gr of H870 in a 24" tube. I'll agree with not accepting 6.5 CM or 6.5 x55,57,.284.. But 6.5-06 would be the real winner, if it was on your list! No ammo for the 6.5 prc and you never know if it will be around in 10 years. The rest are never going to be main stream. You will always be able to find 7 rem.mag. I think the power of everything below the 26 nosler is being WAY overestimated. You get a lot more killing ability when using the overbores (which have their downsides of course) that I don’t feel was accurately highlighted in this video. For instance, taking factory loads of 6.5-300 vs 6.5 prc firing 140 gr accubond, it’s a 400 fps difference at the muzzle (3300 vs 2900), just under 400 fps at 200 yds (2909 vs 2536), and 300+ fps at 500 yds (2382 vs 2042). This translates to a 500 ft-lbs difference at 500 yds (1764 vs 1295). Drop is also halved at 500 yds (21.6 vs 48.8). The 6.5-300 is a monster and I love mine. That’s my vote.

    I've used a 6.5 Gibbs for a long time. It's maximizes the case capacity of the parent 30-06 case. The 6.5 Gibbs will reach velocities within 100 FPS of a .264 Win Mag. I've used it with 90 Grain bullets on prairie dogs and 160 Grain bullets for Northern White tails. Extremely efficient and accurate. I wouldn't expect to see the Gibbs in this discussion but it would sure be interesting to see the .260, 6.5x55, and 6.5-06 numbers in your chart. As for the 6.5 Creedmoor...it's just an update on the 250-3000 Savage invented in the 1920s. The 6.5s best function is necking it down to 250 to feed my 250-3000.

    .264 Win Mag is clearly the better choice. Big case, and maximum performance. Guns kick and make noise. Enough with recoil and suppressors. If you don't like it, shoot a bow. Modern barrels and creative handloading make the TWO SIX FOUR a sensible choice for deer, prongbuck, sheep.
    The 7 Mag is still the king for all around cartridge. If I had a tags for deer and elk on the same hunt, no question that the holy grail 7 with 160 or 175 gr Barnes TTSX would be unbeatable. It shoots well with 24" to 26" barrel.
    I load a .270 WSM to shoot a 140 grain bullet to shoot with the Seb'mn mag and like ammo. So, the .264 stacks up nicely with this.
    My other favorite is the .257 Roy. It will do anything the others will do on like game and down size to coyotes at great distances as well.
    The stated cals are traditional and lack "cool". But, if I am bound for the far reaches of this world and somehow lose my bullet box, I can go to Walmart and procure Remington Core-Lokt (at least used to could) and make them work. THAT'S COOL.

    I can't find 6.5 PRC for less then $5.00 a round either. I ended up with a Creedmoor cause of that.

    6.5 PRC gets my vote. Great availability in guns and hopefully again soon in ammo. Well rounded cartridge. Nothing to dislike.

    6.5 PRC, price and availability for rifles and ammunition give it the win.

      I have NOT been able to find 6.5 PRC ammo nor powder for almost a year now.

      @@sheepdawg6946 I’ll add that I’ve never seen any 6.5prc ammo, brass, or specific reloading supplies EVER in person besides high dollar guns. I visit guns shops and shows frequently and still nothing

      The PRC ammo is the most expensive ammo in this line up by a long shot..

    6.5 PRC has to get the nod today. Sure wish ammunition supply would even out with the demand.

    Because I’m not shooting outside of hunting the 6.5 PRC seems more attractive

    I’m surprised anyone is voting for the PRC with the cost of ammo so much higher than the rest of those options
