I have a Mark v in 6.5x300 and all I can say is, wow. It's the fastest, flatest, cartridge that I have. 127 Barnes smoking. Shot a big male bobcat with it at about 120 yards and the cat fell before the sound left the barrel good. I mean it disappeared so fast I thought I missed. Went down to it a d it was laying there on its side. It had spun that cat 180 degrees and flipped it over at the same time. Bad to da bone.

Where I live in southern Colorado there are opportunities to take long range shots but I don't if I'm not comfortable with the shot. In reality a shot across a 40 acre pasture is long. 440 yards. I've sold off all my magnum rifles because I don't need them and when reloading it costs much more than my other rifles. If I need magnum power I use my 35 Whelen which is a beast and the most efficient cartridge I've ever loaded for yet most often I don't need more than my 30-06 or a 275 Rigby.

Austin I’d also say that I had great results with the Barnes 127 lrx with my rifle it’s a vanguard badlands. Very accurate and I’ve killed two bucks with the rifle and performance is good with those Barnes bullets cuz of the velocity. These bullets can withstand the high velocity and they do not blow up or blood shoot as bad as cup and core bullets. I haven’t tried anything bonded that 130 scirocco would be sweet too.
My comment: The 6.5-300 is offered in the very affordable Vanguard line with a 26" bbl. This price makes it very attainable for the average gun owner. Another thing to consider is the 6.5 CM was designed to a be a long range target cartridge (not a long range hunting cartridge). The is CM is a GREAT cartridge that would no doubt be superior to the 6.5-300 in F-Class tournaments shooting paper at 1000 yards, but the terminal performance of the 6.5-300 would be FAR superior and as long as I could get it to be sub MOA that would be PLENTY accurate for my hunting scenarios.

Look at the powder capacities it requires to attain the speeds shown. I question is it worth it? In the age of range finders when all rifles have become long range shoots, if you know the ballistics of you cartridge, I can't justify the additional expense of anything Weatherby.

You say the 6.5 creedmoor is the most popular hunting cartridge but I feel you should double check that. It sure isn't the most popular where I live. Lots of people here have a 6.5 creedmoor but not for elk hunting. It was designed to be a paper puncher at long range, which it does well. I do think you should get a 6.5-300 weatherby because it seems to be what you want, just make sure you buy loading dies for it.
The reason why my vote for the 6.5-300 is cuz one I love weatherby cartridges there cool the rifles are great too, I like the 257 wby too but it really isn’t on par with the 6.5-300 wby cuz of the class of bullets that can be used, I’d say it is better than any of the other weatherby cartridges in its class like the 270 or 7mm weatherby. Albeit the 30-378 wby would obviously out shoot this cartridge but not far behind.

Would you be buying another rifle? If you have a gun smith you like you could get a barrel to put in one of your other guns, it be cheaper in my opinion
@@ReloadingWeatherbyWeatherby takes standard cartridges and makes them perform a whole lot better. Your 340 is a step up from the 338 Win, but nothing insane, that would make it useful only in a niche category. To me, the 6.5-300 is a highly specialized niche cartridge, ultra long range for limited size game, recoil and muzzle blast are extreme. I argue the same for the 338-378. The ROI is just not there.
Yes! Absolutely! I have a 6.5-300 and LOVE it! I always hated the 6.5 manbun and the hype as I was a 30 cal guy. Then I won a Mark V Ultra Lightweight in 6.5-300 and fell in love with the rifle/cartridge. It’s mild recoiling and crazy fast with a ton of energy dumped into the animal. I’ve switched over to lead free as I eat only wild game and don’t want to add to much lead into my families diet (no matter how awesome Accubonds work). So the speed of the 6.5-300 has been amazingly effective with Barnes 127 gr LRX. I’m going to be working up loads with 130 gr Hornady CX though as well for a bit more oomph (not much but it’s got better SD) for my mountain goat, whitetail, mule deer, elk and moose hunts this fall. And it has taken 3 big whitetail, and a big black bear this past season with more DRT than my 30-06 ever had. That’s what really sold me on it; seeing them drop in their tracks or only going 20 feet. If you’re using it for longer bullets and target shooting I’d suggest the 156 Berger… just don’t hit anything within 400 yards or it’ll grenade before it gets into the body cavity! It is a speedster for sure!
Adding an update to this comment. I’ve taken a BC mountain goat, a bull moose from northern BC, and a big Alberta whitetail so far since making this comment. 1 shot with the 6.5-300 took down the moose, so it hits hard and works beautifully on big animals using the 127 LRX!
@@ReloadingWeatherby so what are you thinking another pretty princess or a purpose built hunting rifle. Modern Weatherby Carbon stock, titanium action. Im sure you know the model I’m talking about. 👍👍. That rifle in that cartridge is a match made in heaven.
Not much if you use the 127 LRX and especially if you don’t smash through both shoulders. I hit my animals through the lungs and just over the heart and they just drop with jelly in the middle. The one I hit through the shoulder (quartering to) it zipped through the muscle and bone and jellied the lungs. It was better than when I’ve done it with my 30-06 with 165 gr Accubonds. Less meat damage and a super quick lights out. If you use softer bullets, like the 140 gr Hornady or the 156 gr Berger it’ll grenade; especially at closer range. But the Berger is designed for that at low speeds (and huge distances as it is designed to grenade after penetrating 2-3”) so imagine what it’d do at 3200 fps instead of 1800 fps lol 😂

Lots of people here have a 6.5 creedmoor but not for elk hunting. It was designed to be a paper puncher at long range, which it does well. I do think you should get a 6.5-300 weatherby because it seems to be what you want, just make sure you buy loading dies for it.
Get one! Get one of each! Insanely overbore! Just know you're the reason there's a powder shortage.😂
Go a head and get the twin turbo man bun lol. Just joking that’s a speedster for sure.
Yes
😃 You Know Austin, I Bet Jack O'Conner Heard The Same Comments About His 270 Winchester! And All Jack Did Was Keep Putting Animals Into the Record Books, While His Critics Didn't! 😜

yes and push the limits of the 156 grain berger elite hunter
I am really interested in that google sheets file you showed. Did you hard code the bullet drop in inches in the cells, or did you use a formula? I have been trying to figure out a formula for my own ballistics excel sheet to calculate drop with no luck.
I put it manually... sadly
👍👍👍yep👍👍😃
I have a 6.5-300 and I love the thing and it’s a powerful creature good enough to take Sasquatch I’m not kidding
The 6.5 Weatherby RPM is going to be the number one of the 6.5 's
Thanks for commenting
Yes!!!!!
270 Weatherby just seems more practicle. But you do you, we will still watch.
I also think “Man-Bun”!
latte sipping man bun lol.
It's like going back in time to the first u.s. 6.5 win mag 1958 that started the 6.5 belted magnum look up the info for that in 1958 I bet ud be surprised then to now
I know exactly what it is
I was hoping for the 338 rpm . Still hope you change your mind
Not sure that will happen... I own a 340 Weatherby
@@ReloadingWeatherby I know, I know it's an amazing gun too . Still can't get into the 6.5 craze on my end lol
338rpm!
Did you get rid of your 300wby? Maybe I missed it, although thought you said you only have the 257 and 340.
No I still have my 300 Weatherby
Vanguard’s have a 26” barrel;)
Would you be buying another rifle? If you have a gun smith you like you could get a barrel to put in one of your other guns, it be cheaper in my opinion
Might be a good idea
Looks like by the time you work up a load and sight it in your barrel gone .
I thought the .375 chey tac was the flattest shooting Cartridge in the world?
You need a runoff election vs the 2nd ranked cartridge
Yes you should get it and reload with Barnes 100 TTSX. Push it to 4000 fps! 😂
Haha 200 round barrel life!
@@ReloadingWeatherby but it would be a glorious fast and furious 200 rounds!
I have one a Mark V Deluxe Accumark. I’m going to get dragged around here, but this is one of my least favorite Weatherby cartridges.
Why do you dislike it?
@@ReloadingWeatherbyWeatherby takes standard cartridges and makes them perform a whole lot better. Your 340 is a step up from the 338 Win, but nothing insane, that would make it useful only in a niche category. To me, the 6.5-300 is a highly specialized niche cartridge, ultra long range for limited size game, recoil and muzzle blast are extreme. I argue the same for the 338-378. The ROI is just not there.
I am tired of the 6.5's honestly. I'd rather see something that you don't see often like .270 WBY or 7mm WBY.
Yes!
You will have the baddest 6.5 on the planet , if you buy one get one in the new 307 you won’t be sorry .
. Why don't you think about getting a 7mm Wby Mag first?
Sadly... I have no desire for one.
@@ReloadingWeatherby Sadly... As it may outperform the newer 7mm in many ways.
I keep telling you; “460 WM C’mon!”
26 Nosler!!
Another speed demon
The reasons I won’t buy a 6.5-300 and 6.5 PRC. Own a 26 Nosler and a creedmoor. Covered in the 6.5 arena.
Why wouldn’t you compare it to the 26 nosler rather than the 28. That would be a much more 🍎 to 🍏 comparison.
Because the 26 Nosler is within 50 FPS of the 6.5-300 WBY.
If I did iwould get a mkv accumark
@@ReloadingWeatherby so what are you thinking another pretty princess or a purpose built hunting rifle. Modern Weatherby Carbon stock, titanium action. Im sure you know the model I’m talking about. 👍👍. That rifle in that cartridge is a match made in heaven.
If you want to change the barrel between 500-1000rounds go for it
Prob more like 400-600.
If you don't get one, you'll always wish you did.
How much meat will it wreck?
With an all copper bullet? Not much
Not much if you use the 127 LRX and especially if you don’t smash through both shoulders.
@@Cool-hand-hunting I agree if you hit bone
Hit it behind the shoulder, and don't worry about it.
Get a 270 Weatherby!
I like the 270 Weatherby
As long as it's a mark V, bro
What is wrong with the Vanguard?
@@ReloadingWeatherby Don't get me wrong - I have 5 Vanguards (one Howa) in 223, 6.5x55, 308, 3006 and 300 win mag, but the mark V is a much better action.
As a world famous Tuber - You are morally obligated to run the 7mm Weatherby!!!!!
6.5 anything is boring but it does come in a vanguard
