- Announcement of the death of BBC Radio 2 stalwart DJ Steve Wright, just two days after his last broadcast on the station. He was 69 years old. Tuesday 13th February 2024 © BBC 2024

A man in his 50's is crying uncontrollably, a huge part of my life has been taken away by the passing of this wonderful man, a true legend of broadcasting that will never be replaced.
RIP Steve, you were a friend to millions.
Your not alone myfriend, i'm 61 and i loved this guy...grew up with him on R1...Will be sadly missed R.I.P Mr Steve Wright...You will be remembered..Legend.

Absolutely devastated about Steve, I feel like I’ve lost an old friend. I used to have jobs that involved driving up and down the country a lot, Steve used to keep me company on those trips. RIP to a true British radio great. 😢

i was the same i remember being un employed during 2001 to 2003 and listening to Steve wright during that time it made my afternoons easy to get by it show was a great show 3 great hours i used to work at a Warehouse and i was the handyman there and one Friday afternoon the manager was off on holiday and the oldies spot came on andf one of the tunes was Hocus Pocus by the Dutch group Focus and some body said what the hell was that a customer it was awful the next tune Sweet Home Alabama ha ha great show i dont think he liked that either

Sara Cox was very emotional herself after that news bulletin on BBC Radio 2 at 5pm & when Bobbie Pryor gave her traffic update report later on she was very close to breaking down in tears but she did manage to hold it together.
Yes so very sad to hear of Steve Wright's sudden passing, BBC Radio 2 will not be the same without him.

I happened to be listening to Simon Mayo on Greatest Hits Radio just as he was announcing the passing of Steve and could hear his voice faltering as we know for many years Simons show followed Steve on Radio 2 in the afternoons until recently, RIP Wrighty
Listened to Steve Wright since I was 18. I’m 61 now absolutely gutted. Had the pleasure of seeing him on the Radio 1 Road show Blackpool 1982 1st week in August then 1983 OctoberSteve , Simon Bates and Alan Freeman did a show at Stewarton Community Centre in Scotland the 10th Anniversary of it opening. On my few occasions of unemployment in early 80’s he got me thru the day as I looked forward to his shows in the Afternoon. Such a genuine kind funny caring person. My Heart goes out to his Family, I listened to his last afternoon show on Radio 2 30 September 2022 and shed a tear. Still listened to him on Sunday mornings and BBC Radio will be all the poorer for not having such a talent and person on its Airwaves now. God bless you Mate and Rest in Peace.

I cannot believe the news of Steve Wright"s passing. Im devastated. He was a true legend who brightened every single listeners life. The radio waves will be not sound the same without his voice on them. Itll take some getting used to not hearing him anymore. RIP Steve Wright.

There are many of us of a certain age who remember the decades not just of afternoon laughter but those introductions to music that he loved and he knew we would love as well. I will never be able to listen to Wichita Linesman without thinking of him and thanking him for the hours of good times he gave to me. RIP dear man.

Absolutely devastated! LOVED Steve & all his characters over the years. I can picture myself listening & laughing at so many funny times whilst in my office, Elvis & his advise, Mr Angry, his side kick Tim….. missed his afternoon show so much. RIP Steve, you were loved by millions. ❤️❤️😢
I have listened to Steve Wright since 1983 when i was off school after having had surgery(i loved Gervaise the hairdresser) and have listened to ever since.He really knew how to do radio and will be sadly missed. RIP Steve Wright.

Steve was a true Icon ,from listening as a youngster to the present he made you feel like part of the show,there will never be another one like him ,thankyou for the music and laughs.❤
I loved his show during my drive home when I worked in London 20 years ago. Loved his style and guests and most of all, his genuine warmth. It was like listening to a mate in the pub.
Hed been a part of my life since childhood. My Dad was a massive fan listened to his show every day and i grew to love him first at Radio 1 and then as i got older I found him again at Radio 2. Like Wogan and Everett there will never be another quite like him.
Very sad and totally gutted to hear the news about Wrighty, The greatest radio jockey ever, absolute legend and radio genius. Wrighty was great company on the long road trips for me in my Lorry and for many other truckers. RIP Steve 😥

Paul Gambaccini on Sunday had.me in tears with his tribute to Steve. And Liza Tarbucks love song show on Sunday morning was therapy.. I knew what Steve meant to my life in the 80s and 90s ,so important on the sites. then Liza read out audience letters when children where getting married and steve read out the dedication.
My Sundays revolved around radio 2 . Love songs through to the beautiful Paul Ogrady. The only joy we can take is we laughed and actually loved Sir Terry Wogan, Steve Wright and Paul Ogrady . Thankyou boys .
So very sad to hear about Steve Wright. Listened to him for years. Met him at Castle Howard at a Radio one roadshow in the early 1980s. The teddy bears picnic. He hosted with Peter Powell and Mike Read. We used to listen to the radio at work. So many good memories. Rest in peace.

First heard Steve Wright on Radio 1 as a Teenager in the 80's. Moved on with him to Radio 2 and Top of the Pops as well. 53 now and he really was the soundtrack to our lives. Lost many showbiz personalities from my formative years over time sadly but Steve's passing has really hit me! The World of Radio without his voice is something i really don't want to contemplate. Bless you Wrighty and just simply, Thankyou. ❤

Listened to Steve, whilst I was at Sony and Panasonic for many decades. Got me through the day with a smile on my face when the work was bogging me down. I remember physically hurting myself laughing whilst listening to one of the "Arny" sketches. He will be greatly missed.

Steve Wright was Mr Radio 1 as well as Radio 2. Heartbreaking that a remarkable human being has left us far too soon.
as a 41 year old, his is the most recognisable voice on radio, if it was hearing his voice growing up as my dad always had the radio on or later on spending 6 years driving up and down the country I always listened to Radio 2 even in my 20s and always tuned into his shows if I was driving about, a comforting sound has now been lost, cheers Steve and rip ✝️🙏🏻✝️
When I heard this very sad news about the sudden passing of Steve Wright on BBC Radio 2 at 5pm I just stared at my radio in complete shock & disbelief.
I only heard him last weekend on the Pick Of The Pops show on Saturday afternoon & Sunday Love Songs on Sunday morning on BBC Radio 2.
What an absolute legend & a one of a kind DJ he was. I remember him on the breakfast show at BBC Radio 1 back in the mid 1990's & of course his afternoon show on BBC Radio 2 on weekdays.
I always looked forward to Friday afternoons on BBC Radio 2 from 4.15pm when Steve Wright would turn into DJ Silly Boi & do his Serious Jockin' show with no 'G' & of his prod squad would do a playful intro of some sort.
I used to like the way he asked us if we or anybody we knew wanted a 'shout-out' on the radio & he would do it in that unique South London accent.
Will certainly miss his voice & mannerisms on the radio & my thoughts are with all the BBC Radio 2 DJ's right now.
I just found out he died today, and I was saddened despite of me being an American listener, RIP Steve

One of the greatest DJ ever known it’s the hardest thing to hear of his passing. But the most difficult part was hearing that he lost his mid afternoon slot to be replaced by an extremely poor DJ called Scot mills . Steve always gave it his all but this Scott mills is hardly ever there and it feels like there is no effort being put into the show. It’s always the same thing just a different day. Yes Steve had his serious, Jockin but the rest of the week it was always different. When Ken Bruce left that was another dark day same with Simon Mayo all because someone wanted to make there mark. Well she certainly did that probably broke Steve heart when he learned that he was being replaced by a part time DJ I’m sorry to say this but radio 2 was listened by millions now only by a few thousand even now trying to get listeners back by advertising on BBC 1 . Please God look after this nation treasure you now have in your hands he truly was amazing and truly loved here 😭😭😭😞😞🥹🥹

He presented Steve Wright in the Afternoon for 12 years on BBC Radio 1 and 23 years on BBC Radio 2, two of the BBC's national radio stations.
He continued to present his Sunday Love Songs on Radio 2 until his death and, in October 2023, he took over as the host of the long-running Pick of the Pops chart show. On BBC Television, Wright hosted Home Truths, The Steve Wright People Show, Auntie's TV Favourites, Top of the Pops and TOTP2. Wright won awards, including Best DJ of the Year as voted by the Daily Mirror Readers Poll and by Smash Hits in 1994. In 1998 he was awarded TRIC Personality of the Year for his radio programmes.

People say that celebrities' deaths don't matter to individual people but we were all made to feel a part of the Radio 2 family. Having listened to "Wichita Lineman" straight after this announcement, I will never think of that song in the same way again. And you could feel the sincerity in Sara's words after the news.
