  • We've had the M2 Bradley splitting up squads for decades now. Enough is enough. I get separation anxiety when my Alpha team is away from my Bravo team for more than five minutes. This conversation with West Point US Army platoon leader Justin Taylor is all about that Near Peer Pressure action.

      such awesome content! laid back but very informative.
      could you guys make more of this format?
      things you have experience with. for example Cappy has xp with Strykers and those are since also in Ukraine. Could be the perfect next episode! : )

      oh nvm, you got into comparing those already here.
      but still, there must be tons of other vehicles or small arms you've used, you could talk about and analyse.
      also all kinds of training experiences are super interesting too!

    Back in the 1980's when the Bradley was first introduced, the concept was that all the soldiers in a single Bradley were in the same squad. The Bradley crew- driver, gunner and track commander- were the squad's fire support team. The guys riding in the back were the squad's maneuver team. When closing with the enemy, the platoon sergeant stayed with the fire support teams (the Bradley's), while the platoon leader dismounted to lead the maneuver teams. That was the Army's text book solution.

    A little-known 1982 Army experiment suggests the potential value of even more radical
    lightweighting, possibly to a 0.7-ton version. In the early 1980s, the U.S. Army created a unique battalion with a fleet of militarized dune buggies. The unit was supposed to scout ahead, as well as harass its enemy counterparts.
    2nd Battalion, 1st Infantry and its unusual vehicles are one of the more recognizable parts of the ground combat branch’s “High Technology Light Division” experiment. When 30 tanks were set against 30 Baja dunebuggies armed with precision-guided munitions, the prompt result was 27 dead tanks (21 completely immobilized) and three dead dunebuggies. That exercise was done in desert, not forest or city, and not under chemical warfare conditions, but it’s still enlightening.

    The M113 has been in service with several variants since 1960 and will not be fully replaced in active US army stock until sometime in the 2030's. This was after was 5-6 attempts at replacing it during it's service length. One of which lead to the Bradley. The M2 and M3 Bradley entered service in 1981, so far there have been 3-4 attempts to replace it. Looking at the procurements offices past failures, err I mean wonderful achievements. The US army probably won't replace the Bradley until sometime in the 2050's. Looking at the bright side it means that soldiers can share stories about their time in the Bradley with their Grandpa. And isn't that the strongest weapon anyone can have, Family!

    Man I am so sorry I missed this video when it first came out (damn the TH-cam algorithm[I think?]). But better late than never. There are two types of people in this world those who admit they've gotten lost and those who will not (and think they're fool everyone). Great work Justin & Cappy the more collaboration on information the closer we'll get to the real picture.

      1. On your other channel, task and purpose you privatized a video on the new L3 Harris sight for the 6.8 mm rifle, why?
      2. Do you know how much that L3 Harris sight costs? For some reason I wasn't able to find out on my own and I figured maybe you knew.

      I was looking for a sick Condor plate carrier

  • @sirjohndough8575
    @sirjohndough8575 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Apparently two different ways of thinking. In the US only the PL dismounts his carrier, whilst in Sweden both the PL and the Asst PL dismounts to lead the rifle platoon. Instead of having the Asst PL staying in the carrier, there is already a designated carrier group commander seated in his own carrier, leading all the carriers.

    • @903lew
      @903lew 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is a difference in doctrine. When I was in mech infantry (I19/Pbat, 06-07) the PL remained in his CV9040 as the vehicle was the main source of combat power for the unit. Infantry dismounted only in defence and MOUT but in general would fight from the vehicle, thus the value of having the PL on top of his CV90 with all the radios and vision/protection.

    Make one with similar abilities (anti infantry like the 20mm, anti tank with the missile mount, etc) but it has room for a full squad. Basically make it a little bigger with modern stuff
    And Cappy you have the big brain

    • @Justin_Taylor
      @Justin_Taylor 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      A higher caliber main gun is going to be needed. Right now the 25mm (which is used almost exclusively for vehicles, we have a coaxial machine gun for infantry) just cant reach out far enough or hit hard enough to keep up with modernizations across near peer militaries.

    interesting to hear all this, but right at the end you talked about the jokes about officers getting lost... now I am British and although not in the military am the son of an officer and I never heard of this over here, in fact the officers were/are supposed to major in map reading and navigation. So I would be interested to here peoples views on this; is it mainly an American thing? How about other countries? Or have I just missed something? I have been on some British military focussed websites like arsepedia and have not seen anything there either. Any comments welcome.

    Seems the TOE of Bradley units are somewhat disorganized, Gunner goes to TC seat, new Gunner goes to the Gunners seat. Why make it so complicated? Already back in the sixties, the Swedish Army had assigned a designated APC Squad Commander (E7) who lead the APCs when the P/L or Asst P/L wasn´t around. The gunner in each vehicle was a Sergeant (E5) and he was the Commander of the individual vehicle.

    • @Justin_Taylor
      @Justin_Taylor 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That only goes for the Platoon Leader's Track. The Platoon Sergeant (E7) is in charge of the APCs when the Platoon leader dismounts. The reason the commander is separate of the gunner is because of how the Bradley crew dynamic works. It allows for the commander and the gunner to strictly worry about their individual task at hand.

    The Bradley is a proven platform, but it's getting old. I like the General Dynamics/BAE Ajax AFV, but that vehicle is too heavy. Seems to me a brand new light weight AFV that can comfortably hold the standard squad and be equipped with add on armor should be designed and manufactured.

    • @someguy8732

      @@TaskPurpose1stSquad With near peers going to larger and larger guns as well, the armor on the next IFV will have to handle that too. Armor weighs a lot and the new IFVs will need more armor. I wonder if they will go modular, with up armor packs pre-designed to go on the vehicles for when it is needed and the combat area can suppor the heavier weight. Or for rapid deployments to send the vehicles over light with the up armor following to add on as it gets there.
      Or maybe the IFV can get a composite armor, like Chobham or some similar armor, in a lighter format for standing up to something like 76mm rounds instead of 125mm rounds.

      I agree. Just look at the numbers. Russia has a population of 142 million. The United States has a population of 330 million. That's not counting an additional 196 million in the European nations that would join in a fight with Russia. There's no way that Russia would have any chance of winning a conventional war versus the United Sates and all of Europe. I'm sure the Russians know that.

      Changing the m4 to a heavier rounds would still be expensive because you would have to fix any issues the change causes so the military should just change to a weapon system that can take a folding stock or is a bullpup design.
