OVERLANDING! Kind of a buzz word, I know - but it also does a decent job of representing what myself and many others love to do. Load up into your car, head out into the woods, and camp for a night or seven. While it may seem confusing to get into - especially if you come from no background of doing it with any of your family or friends in the past - it's actually pretty easy. Don't overcomplicate things, keep it simple, take it slow. In this video I try to talk you through how easy it is to get started.

“You don’t need it”…this has become my motto in this economy
The one-bin camping solution is a game changer. I recommend every avid camper try it at least a few times.
It really helps you narrow down the essentials, and you ultimately spend more time doing what matters most.
I’ve been doing what the cool young kids are now calling Overlanding (we called it car camping) in front wheel drive hatchback’s usually lowered since the 1980s, I didn’t get my first SUV or crossover until I bought the bronco sport in 2021. Now I’m in a jeep grand Cherokee. I am 100% confident that a few of my FWD Rally prep hatchbacks could get just about any place that Grand Cherokee can go pulling the tiny teardrop camper trailer. I would say 95% of my gear was thrift store, hand me down, or improvised from used equipment. As things failed or didn’t quite work budget, allowing I upgraded. But I pretty much started with my used bike/back packing gear and hand me down 1950s and 60s camping gear from my parents and grandparents.
Excellent way to do it!
Let me guess, you also walked to school uphill both ways. 😆
I currently live my life vicariously through Mike and this channel, but someday in the next 3-5 years I will have the homestead in the Colorado mountains w/ all the toys.
Speak it into existence!
I like that you always encourage people to get out with what people have rather than copy TH-camrs.
Always great hearing someone who has influence say stuff like this. Go outside, enjoy your time with whatever you have. ALOT of influencers are trying to sell you on the idea that you need all the bells and whistles to enjoy camping because they are paid to do so
Hey guys! How’s it going! Hope you been well ❤
That’s the dream warehouse right there! Someday 🤞
Great video! I am old enough to remember when we called this, "Camping". Usually out of a pickup. You were really in tall cotton if you had a camper shell. You were Bill Gates if you had a collapsible cabover like an "Alaskan" camper. The good idea is to get out into nature; preferably to a place where cell phones don't work. You can do all of this out of a 1973 Chevy pickup, for under $100. (for a weekend) Garage sales, estate sales, Goodwill stores, and Craigslist are great places to find gear. You can build up from there if you decide you like it. You don't need 75K worth of vehicles and gear to go outside and play.
Yup, still call it camping today!
Can’t wait for the shop build out! Definitely document everything on that. Goals right there
Can't wait to see the walk-through with the new building. That space is a game changer!
Testing out what you have is truly key. I love it when I come back from a trip and I think to myself what could have made my trip easier or organization.
I can’t wait for the shop video!
I’ve watched you and talon forever for my inspiration for edc and camping and gear, you guys started an expensive hobby for me but I love it! Hopefully some time I run into you out on the trails!
I think I found your channel by way of a pair of pants review related to EDC. You’ve inspired my husband and I so much when it comes to just getting out there. Love this message.
I camp out of a 2005 Sequoia. My gear includes two bins for lots of random stuff, a 4ft fish cleaning table with a little sink, a few 5 gallon water containers and a marine foot pump to have running water, a shower tent with a bucket toilet, another bucket for trash, 2.5 gallon black container to heat water up in the sun for shower, classic coleman stove, chair, Jackery 500, cooler. And then everything goes inside my Gazelle gazebo tent. And I sleep in the sequoia. It's a fairly elaborate setup that takes some time, but all my camping is 2 nights or more. It's enough to be off grid for up to 5 days.
I strongly agree with you Mike!! Started off venturing off in my 3rd gen 4runner 2WD then upgraded to the GX470. I dont have all the cool gears like everyone in the " overlanding " community. Just brought with me some good prepped meals, great sleeping quarters and THE most important one of all is SAFETY!! first aid kit, recovery gear, comms and tools.
Man, I really should get out. I have all the time in the world now since getting laid off a few weeks ago. Would be a nice stress reliever.
I’m looking forward to seeing the barn buildout!
great video mike!!!!! great solid info so someone doesn't become overwhelmed
Me and my Mazda3 have done our fairshare of camping out in the middle of the desert. Some day I'll have a truck but for now, the Mazda will do.
Nothing wrong with getting out there in a Mazda!
I'm mad jealous of that outbuilding! Can't wait to see what all you do with it.
Hey Mike, I've been watching for a very long time... The one thing that I find great is you have the gambit of things you are passionate about you have from simple to more complex rigs and ideas of what your experiences have been. We always take "first timers" out or talk with them at our meets just to make sure they understand the logistics of what they are looking for and what they need to enjoy that experience. The last thing you want is a call out because someone is in an emergancy situation because they didn't have what they needed. I love the message of get out there enjoy, reset yourself, and experience what nature has to offer... If you enjoy it move to the next level and so on... but just get back to a good space... and for the love respect nature and the area you go, respect seems to be a forgotten art not only for nature but people... Oh and your intro always makes me feel welcome !! Peace from the Great white North !!
4 wheel drive, some decent tires, beer and food are all you need for a good time
Oh yeah 👍
Killing it bro!
First off your shop/garage looks awesome so far! I would love love to have something like one day!
Speaking of getting into overlanding…if you have an older vehicle you want to build up/accessorize a little for the experience pro tip is to get that thing in tip top mechanical condition first. I’m guilty of spending money on the fun stuff first. Trust me having a reliable vehicle when you’re out there will make your trip easier and less stressful!
Congrats on the shop. Great material. I know I am member of a fewe FB groups and they have help me a lot to get into Overlanding. Some of us do monthly meetups both on the trails and other meetups to learns skills or just break bread together.
Awesome shop
It would be sweet to see that video of pros and cons of each vehicle. It would also be cool to see the detail build out series of the postframe/shop you have. I see you went with metal framing vs wood. It would be cool for you to talk about how you built it and the reasons for things like that. Even like how thick the concrete you poured and why you went with asphalt vs concrete for the driveway etc. just some idea! Glad the homestead is coming along and it's looking super nice man!
2018 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport AWD has been my weekend camper for the last 5 years. She's bone stock with a roof rack. 80% of the time I don't even use a roof top tent. I love my Coleman insta-tent and military cot. An old Coleman stove my grandpa gave me. It really is easier than I've would think.
Yep! I think most newbies over-think what they need for their level of camping. They watch all these sponsored full time overlanding youtubers and think they need a truck on 40s with a RTT. When, all they really need is some basic camp crap and whatever they already drive. LOL! Back in November, I made a video for my Overlanding Newb Playlist trying to show that. Of course, yours is about 200 times as good.
The new shed is awesome Mike. Could you take us on a walk around your land cheers from NZ
Hey Mike congrats on the house, shop, and family! It’s been great fun watching your channel and family grow…thanks for sharing your life. Can you maybe explain your process on finding and buying the cars/ suvs in your stable? With new vehicles being so expensive, I feel that that explanation could really help your subscribers to find and purchase their off-road or overland rig..thanks Mike.
Loved the video, would appreciate more like it. Excited to see how this applies to the pepper buggout situation. Could you make a video of what you need on your overload/bugout rig? Whench, lift, etc and what brands to consider/avoid.
How happy is Ashley to have her garage back? 😂
Also, use what you have is so important. As is understanding the limitations of your vehicle. Stock outback vs stock wrangler vs built ranger.
She's glad to be parked in a garage again for sure, haha!
@@LastLineOfDefense y'all going to get dumped on tomorrow?
@@jhbryanivforecast says we should get a few inches
Hey there, I was one of the interested parties in purchasing the Sequoia 🙂 For future videos when talking about your vehicles it would be very useful to give us some tips on where to look to purchase them and what to look out for. I'll be watching closely as I want to get a vehicle to go out on simple and short trips as you described in this video. Very useful.
The car house is amazing!!!!!
Casey 250 and the story till now are some great TH-cam channels for weekend overlanding
I'm beginning to think that the least expensive part of overlanding is the vehicle in stock form. It took me two years to figure out what I needed for what I wanted to do. Functionality and having it make sense were the most important criteria... and I'm happy. :)
How I got started: Grew up camping so I had baseline gear, a friend of a friend on a camp trip to Boundary Waters had a zr2 build w/ a RTT. I had a scion tc I would do skate trips in. Found you when researching trucks and my setup is built with loads of your inspiration. traded in the tc for a tacoma, bought a diamondback and a skycamp mini and hit the road that following summer for 5 weeks with basic camp gear I had and worked remote along the road. Year two I adjusted the build and bought starlink and spent 3.5 months all around the central and west coast. I kept my truck fully stock those first tow years, Didn;'t update suspoension, wheels tires till after I put on 36,000 miles those first two years. I still don't have slider, bumpers or armor. I just get out there. My gf bought an e350 4x4 van for year three so we could get a dog and still travel. (extended travel in the truck build is very hard with a pup) Now we travel in whichever build better suits the trip and sometimes take both. We did multiple 1, 2 and 5 weeks trips to different areas this year. Thank you for sharing all your videos and others alike. If anyone has the ability to work remote and wants to get out there it's 100% possible to do it or even just work remote for a week so you have two weekend to make the trip worth it. Camp a few days during the week locally and hit up a coffee shop near by and test it at low risk. Just get out and see if it's something you enjoy with what you have.
Great story! Please share your experience finding and keeping that remote job. I work in the semiconductor industry which doesn't warrant remote jobs😢
@@OverlandSmiles Certainly. I am building an overlanding brand around remote work. The main thing I want to share is how to take a hybrid job, partially remote and extend a weekend from Friday EOD to Sunday and extend that to leaving Wednesday night and extend that weekend from 2.5-4.5 days.
Trails and Tales Overland is what to search here to find where that is shared. Let's talk more.
More HQ building fit out! Cheers!
Thanks for the video. I want to hear all about that freaking cool shop/garage. Size, cost, manufacturer/builder...etc..
We need a LLOD get home bag video!!
Yes Mike Video
Can’t wait for a video on the 570.
Dang that was pretty quick. That is a very nice barn
I have a 2020 Chevy Colorado, it's 2wd but has the Z71 package. So it has a possy track, slowly turning it to my overland rig.
I have a Class B van and have it sorta off road ready and love it! I am a retired 66 yr old female, I would do what you are doing if I was your age and could do it all over again! Excellent excellent excellent video great advice and info!! Looking forward to the other videos. I have a generator under my van so can't go too far off the path, probably should lift it some. I don't want to remove the generator though.
Cool video! When is the get home bag video coming!? Lol
Haha within the next 5 videos I promise!
Mike, I love all your content and really enjoy all the variety! In regards to overlanding, would love to see a collaboration with you and Nate Pickel from Dirtlifestyle.
100% agree on trial and error mentality to develop your own systems and kit. I'd add to that notion that it is 100% ok and recommended to go out with your stock rig and see where it takes you. If you need some new tires, get a decent set of AT or trail terrains. Most people would be very surprised at how far into the interior of a NF or BLM block they get. I like to think of it this way, all forest service roads at one point or another had a stock forest service F150 4x4 driving along them. If you came across an obstacle that would have been defeated by a winch or a lift, adopt and adapt. If a chain saw and a tow strap would have gotten the job done and allowed you to go further, there are some great electric saws now that use the same batteries that you likely already have for your circular saw or drill set.
Agree with Mike that the only way to really know what works for you is to get out and do it. Feel free to ask questions, find out what works for other people, but don't take anyone's advice as gospel. Everyone is different. The more you go out, the more you'll find out what works for you and what doesn't. For me I do weekend trips, but I also do week-long trips with groups where you're getting up every morning and have to be wheels up by a certain time, then put in long miles before setting up camp when you're tired. If you do a trip Friday-next Sunday, You're packing up or tearing down camp 18 times! For me, I found that the more complicated, or the more time something took to setup, the less likely I was to use it. I also hated digging through other things to get to the thing I wanted, so organization was key for me. Bins worked for awhile, until I got sick of taking everything out to get to my camp stove every time (because it was the heaviest, biggest thing in there). I also want to enjoy good food, good drink, and good coffee while I'm out there, and sleep great, so my setup is built around that. Plus it needs to carry mountain bikes and skis/snowboards to support other adventures where I might also want to camp.
I camped a bunch of nights, and my truck went through 4 different systems/setups until I found the right one that worked for me. Each time I changed it, I sometimes had to change out some gear to get the Tetris just right. I'm an efficiency and optimization nerd, so I'll probably never be done tweaking slightly, but I will continue to get out and use it and learn more about what could be better. When starting your build, think about and rate your most critical aspects in a number of categories like capability, reliability, maneuverability, fuel economy, space, storage/organization, comfort, looks, etc. Then plan your vehicle and your build around what's most important to you. You'll save yourself a lot of money if you have a good plan, and are honest about what your needs are.
Also, while it's cool to get compliments (none of us are immune to a little flattery, and we like when our work is appreciated), don't worry about what anyone says/thinks about your vehicle or build (except your traveling partner(s) or significant other ha). There will always be people who want to criticize others and tell them how much better their stuff is than others, but all that matters is that your build works for you and you're happy with it.
This is kinda giving me an idea of possibly starting some sort of overlanding channel focused on a budget
Such great advice 🙏🏾🤙🏾
Great advise! just get out in nature!
Love your videos! Was just looking and wondering because maybe I missed it. But have you done a review of the biolite fire pit? Aside from the quick comments on it during some other weekenderlander videos. Thanks!
I am totally looking forward to getting a Tacoma. Want me a Taco! I cannot wait to get out there and start overlanding.
First let me say that I love your content! Specifically, I really enjoyed watching your process of building your house so I can use some of your ideas as seeds for what I might want to build one day. Many of those were longer videos but recently I don't have the time to dedicate to a 30+ minute video. You will post something that looks amazing or at least interesting but I will only end up watching about half of it and forget to ever get back to the rest. All that to say, I liked this 15 minute shorter segment because I could just play it while getting ready for work and actually finish it. Obviously there will always be some videos that require more time (Christmas wish list 😁) but I would love it if you might be able to split some of your videos into smaller segments. I miss seeing your stuff when I look at it and I'm just like "Man that vid looks crazy but it's 35 mins and my break at work is only 15. I don't have time to watch it 😟"
you should get a gfc style camper for the tundra! Would be an awesome collab with them or another company and super cool to see you build it out and set it up.
Duuuuude…dope shop!!! Super excited to see the build out series on it, what size is it? Looks like 60ish feet deep and maybe a bit wider?
Thank you for your valuables tips. I am very interested in hearing about your success story. It looks like you’re doing very well for a young man. If you make a video about your story, you’ll have a lot of interest on the tube. Greetings from Winnipeg 🇨🇦
Man I really wish I can do that one bin thing. I have some serious mental issues with gear. I always have the back of my truck packed out with things and after every trip I go through my stuff and try to take some things out. I recently tried the one bin. I ended up buying the biggest bin they had, and of course, three other bins followed. I’m really trying to get to what you did. But mentally it’s rough for me. Lol
A video showing a list of basic gear that someone trying to get into overlanding would be a helpful.
I joined an off-road club here in Iowa about 20 years ago it was ok they were more about breaking as many parts as possible not about enjoying nature
Could you make a video on wraps for your vehicles?
Very good points. I have totes i use but would like to set uo a dedicated ine yhats pre-loaded w/everything is need for a grab ans go day or iver night trip.
Dude! How many vehicles do you own?! Seriously though. Love the content and the advice.
I dream about building my 2018 F-150 Super Crew STX/FX4. Then I realized I live in Iowa. We don't have mountains or even off road trails to camp sights. Its parks that are paved or gravel.
hey what's up man! i've been off youtube for a bit but i'm one of your old time subscribers, back when we talked about Overwatch, haha. great to see that you've grown so much. i have a kid now and i see you have one too, congrats! i came here to see if you've done a video on SUV vs Truck for a family vehicle. i may have another kid next year and looking to upgrade to a bigger vehicle. it would be 2 adults, 2 kids, and sometimes a 50 lb dog too. part of me wants a big truck (tundra). but the practical side says a large SUV makes more sense as a family vehicle (grand highlander). i'm pretty when sure camping with a dog, an SUV might make more sense because he can have his spot inside, and i'd have to add a roof box for extra gear. anyway, i figure you've probably made family trips to the grocery store as well as camping with an SUV and truck so you may have better input.
good advice
Garage build videos!
Are you still doing building your get home bag? Looking forward to that one!
I’d like to know how to find trails/roads? How do I know if my F350 Tremor (modeled off the Freedom Tremor) can make it? Some guidance on finding where to go would be amazing!
I want to film more outdoors. I have a scuba channel as my main channel, and want to do more of my trip footage too. Would love tips on solo shooting video outdoors and your camera set up? The Amazon store is outdated I think, no osmo on there for example
Mike….why not a door on the opposite side for a drive though? Highly recommended.
We have a 06 Commander. Big and roomy.
The 2202 Honda crv is the only true overland vehicle
Maybe the Honda Element
I would like to hear your thoughts about Overlanding with a Cybertruck.
Unfortunately, I’m broke now and losing everything after three years as a nomad, but if I ever recover from my current financial issues, I would like to have an offgrid property with a warehouse like that. Just a place to store all my stuff while I’m not using it, though I do have very little stuff.
Great looking shop! Whats in that crate next to an FJ?
It’s a big rocket stove that can also gravity feed and burn pellets.
That's hilarious!
You come on and say.... "This is gonna be a rambling video".
I'm like.... Noooooo. Mike? Ramble? Nooooo! Hahahaha.
I am looking to trade in my Civic SI for a more family SUV, but I want to be able to get out there a little bit. Looking in the low 30's, what's your pick? Looking at a Cherokee Trailhawk, thoughts?
Will you get a small ultra light aircraft to put in that hangar for the ultimate bugout? 😮
Hi all, I have a problem. I have a 2018 Chevrolet Suburban and want to put a rear trunk cargo/storage/fridge slide trunk system/set-up either pre-fabbed or custom. Unfortunately my Suburban, surprisingly is not supported by any designers/installers. I live in Lynbrook, Long Island New York. Any suggestions? Thank you in advance, stay safe all.
so where do i find the new building? I'm thinking like a barn dominium.
Hello, I have a 2021 NV3500 High Top Van that I would like to transform into an Overland vehicle. Would love to get your insight.
Do you know when flannels will be back in stock
I would like to know the cheapest to nicest cameras to get started
When is the podcast coming out???
Did you continue this series? Don’t think I saw the vehicle choice one
Mike I just switched back to an f150 from a 4runner. Truck suited my daily life better. What would be a first upgrade you would suggest for a full size truck to help it in trail scenarios?
tires.
I live in south texas... its too hot to go outside for 8 months of the year... and it's flat so nothing nice to look at. and there are snakes and scorpions and spiders and alligators by the water... and its too dry for campfires usually.... and I have a corolla.... lol
I love when you do that thing with your mouth...just kidding that's kind of weird. Nice shop dude! Looking at one similar to that in a few years.
What kind of glasses are those?
I also just bought an 08 570..how many miles on yours?
140k on mine - not too bad.
Thank you for the encouragement and advice. I think plenty of the people have gotten a huge hit in their pocket book, with the economy diving. Fortunately; we have an opportunity to make things better if we vote wisely! I work for a small local & community based music store. I do sales, special orders, and work on all stringed instruments; however, I'm only working 9hours a week now; therefore, now work doing mechanical jobs on the side, and actually specialize in transmissions. When the pandemic happened, I invested in tools and car parts for my 3rd gen 4runner. It all made sense later. I love that you have a range of coverage for different subject matter, and great ideas! The videos are also detailed from shorter clips, to longer detailed covered videos! Thank you again Mike! God bless you and your family.
I know there’s a running daddy’s money joke but would genuinely be interested in a video about how you got to where you are at (saving, investing, jobs, real estate, financed vs cash, etc)
He's Korean, he's naturally rich 😂
On a real note, he was a web developer. Probably was making six figures already with that job.
AHHHHH
I would appreciate if you would let us know what part of the country you live
I live in the mountains of Colorado
I thought you were selling the van?
