Truck, mainly for the versatility of it, but also because that's what i already own. Also as an added bonus, my truck is paid off and i don't have to worry if it gets banged up a bit. Lets face it, if your afraid of a ding, overlanding is not your thing! lol
I went with a 2WD 4Runner as my daily/occasional camping vehicle. Good tow capacity to tow my light track car, rear seats fold flat for an air mattress for those trackside nights, and we rarely get bad snow here so 2WD saves on gas and mechanical complexity.
I really wanted a 4runner but I can't sleep in the cabin without removing the second row seats and that doesn't work for my daily life. That's why now I have to decide between a truck or SUV and which one might work for me. I'm bummed the 4runner doesn't have a more adaptable seat to give me more cabin length.
The day I parked my Chevy Suburban under the "loading zone" awning at Home Depot, sliding 4'x8' sheets of drywall in pouring rain, while all the pick-up guys gave me funny looks...... is forever sealed in my brain. I just smiled. Sure, I can't take a scoop of mulch from a skid-steer into the bed, but hey... I haul more things I want to keep dry, than I do things than need the "accessibility" of a truck bed. To each his own. Rock on dudes.
I have put gravel, bricks, fertilizer, and a bunch of other stuff in the back of my SUV. I have pushed my rear air suspension to its limit at least 10 times. I do what I want LOL.
I do similar things with the back of our Toyota Sienna since all of the seats either fold down or come out. One day my buddy was moving some stuff and was doing multiple trips with his dads truck. I offered to drive our van over and take a load off his hands. I slid a whole couch in, slid a dresser in along side it, shoved a bedside table in after the dresser, shut the tailgate and drove it to his Dads house. The look on his dads face when I backed the van into his driveway and he saw what was inside was priceless. Once drove from AZ to Cali, purchased and picked up a chinese cnc laser, and drove it back to AZ in one day. Got 25ish mpg the whole way too. :)
I’ve had an SUV for 16yrs (4runners). I was going to purchase a pickup truck, but ended up buying a 5x10’ trailer. This is nice bc I can drive where I’d like and haul what I “need”. I’m not one who rock crawls, mainly trails and beach. I can drop the trailer (lock it down while gone) and head out on the trails/beach. This year I’m looking to start using the 4runner as my tent. Just me and the dog. Otherwise I use a ground tent. Great vid!
What kind of trailer did u buy? I have a 4runner Limited 4x4. I wanted the AWD at all times but then realize the panels and bumpers are lower than the SR5 or trail edition. So now I'm trying to figure out how to modify that so i can get better ground clearance.
The reason I bought a 4runner over a Tacoma was to store and secure my coolers when I go long range fishing. Sometimes I’ll be gone for two weeks and it would be a bummer if my coolers weren’t there when I get back. I just wish Toyota did make a better securing system in the back to tie down equipment just like you mentioned.
Wire bike locks work good to lock stuff to the in bed tie downs in a truck. Use them to secure gas cans when going places with my four wheeler in the back.
The main thing drawing me towards a SUV is the "you can sleep inside" factor, not just for the weather, but as a precaution as a prepper. However, I like the extra options a truck offers and I hadn't considered the higher need to secure things down in a SUV. Maybe I'll look more into trucks with camper shell mods... I just don't really like how they look... I too am pretty interested in how the new Ford Bronco will turn out.
They both have their attributes. I came from a series of Jeep Wranglers and still love them, but now that I have a 2018 Tacoma off road I am loving it, and can’t see myself being without a truck again for all the versatility! The truck has been great to haul and facilitate my mountain and fat biking.
Wife and I have been dealing with the truck, suv thing for a few months now, we decided to get both! She decided she wants a truck, instead of her Tahoe( I hate that thing) So pretty sure she is going with 2020 Tacoma off road premium, I am turning my Rubicon into a full time ranch vehicle, and getting 2020 4 Runner off road premium. Too much dust down here for cloth seats( been there done that) so we both want the fake leather, also helps when you have 4 dogs, and an occasional grand kid tagging along.
LIFTED BUILT SUBURBAN ON 40s, gear swapped, Lockers, lights. No bear or mountain lion attacks while sleeping and never exceeding vehicles payload rating design capacity and you can still tow!! Full size SUVs are the shit!!!!! :)
I have like the SUV platform, with trailers. We have several trailers. Most modern trucks will not haul a 4x8 sheet of plywood or large toys. You may not want to put gravel, sand, garbage or big loads in your new truck bed. So you will want a trailer anyway. SUV works for my lifestyle, with trailers and an old full size pickup.
I don’t do much of it anymore because of health issues and age but back in the day I took a 1976 Oldsmobile Cutlas off-road more then most people buying these big nice 4x4’s do now. I eventually got to start driving four wheel drives and I absolutely love them. I have had both trucks and SUV’s. I love them all. They each have their perspective favorability on the trails. But don’t ever think just because you drive a two wheel drive that you can’t get it muddy.
My Sweetie and I have been wheelin' Jeep Grand Cherokees for years. Our current overlander is a '01 Grand Cherokee Limited with 4.7 V8, limited slip diffs all around, 3" lift, bit larger tires, factory skip plates and tow hooks. We sleep on a memory foam mattress in the back and use a tent to store our stuff in, use as a changing room and bathroom if we take a portable toilet with. Have a roof rack and rear cargo rack for stove, chairs and tent. It's nice to be able to throw duffel bags in the front seats and climb in the back if its raining or windy and not have to set up anything outside. P.S. If we need to haul furniture or what not we have a utility trailer that costs $0 to sit next to the garage.
I have a 2002 Toyota 4Runner 4x4 and a 2002 Toyota Tacoma 4x4 both build for overlanding/ dailys All I know is I would never sell my 4Runner but at the same time my Taco , has made my life easier.
1996 Jeep XJ is amazing. I had my parents sleep in the back with seats folded and I slept in the passenger side front seat. Wasn’t a 5 star hotel but it was great for Joshua Tree National Park
Good stuff. I bought a Tacoma in 2015 because my Subaru just couldn’t cut where I wanted to go. I then heard about this cool thing call “Overlanding” which I’ve translated into fancy car camping, or in your terms #weekenderlander. Since then I’ve gotten a lift, bigger tires, rims, rack, RTT, traction boards, and who knows how much gear. I’m also of the mindset that more money I dump into my build the more I use it. Keep the videos coming they’ve helped me a ton.
To each their own. I’ve had 2 Tacoma’s. 2003 extended cab had it for 12 years no problems ever ran perfect when traded it in, traded that foolishly for a 2015 Tacoma quad cab, loved it, intended to buy it after lease but couldn’t afford to keep it. Missed my truck so much I bought a 4x4 I could afford. Researched and shopped for a long time and picked up a 2002 garage kept Toyota Sequoia. Dudes....I absolutely love this thing. It is so comfortable. If can off-road like a mofo. And I can not believe how much storage it has with the back seats folded down. Way more than both of my Tacoma’s. Plus I never have to worry about rain, theft, or things blowing out. Good point about strapping things down though.
I have a Tundra 4wd, and do pretty hardcore offroading. All I complain about it is the long wheel base. Im always having to get down and check if the truck will hit the bottom or angling so I can go up steep hills. But the power and bed space is super useful to me. I have a lot of stuff I carry around and tow so I manage
I just purchased a Chevy Avalanche. It's an SUV/Truck. It's the only truck that you crawl into the bed from inside your truck. You can camp inside it and comes with Built-in coolers. It's going to be my Overlanding/camping truck.
I've been writing for a prepper website for quite some time. I've done some interesting stuff with my XL7 Vitara (which is going to be highly modified once I can come back to my country) like jumping over a tree that some thugs had cut down to screw us. This said, you need the sturdiest vehicle you can get. If I could get an armored surplus car with 8 wheels, I'd go with it. There is not too much thoughts to waste on this. Get something tough, easy to repair, low-tech, if you want to overland. Keep it simple and you will keep it running. Go with fancy tech, and you'll be in trouble in the middle of nowhere. Don't ask me how I learned this.
I live full time out of a 2500 suburban and its perfect for me! full size bed inside, dual zone climate control if the weather is too cold or hot, 40 gallons of fuel plus 6 more in rotopax. Its not to big or wide to go on 97% of the trails I run. Plus they are cheap to find and cheap to fix and totally bombproof! Just wish it had more power and id be totally happy with my build!
I've had both. One big advantage of the truck route is weight capacity. For example, a Tacoma has about a 400lb greater carrying capacity than a 4Runner. Bumpers, winches, armor, refrigerators, people and all of their gear can add up in a hurry, maxing out a vehicles GVWR.
Wow, I thought I was the only one with the "affliction" of multiple car syndrome. I'm almost 73 and between my wives (4) and vehicles (61) my path to wealth got curtailed. Sports cars were my passion for many years but now my SUV is more than sufficient. My wife no longer drives so we kept the SUV and sold my pick up (4X4) and my Harley Fatboy (sigh!). Another commentor mentioned that owning a pick up invites your friends and neighbors to help them move...so true. I love the fact that I can sleep in my SUV and not have to worry about setting up a tent or tent cot which is what I do during warmer days. I thought about getting a roof top tent, AluCab (?), but taking it off when not in use did not appeal to me plus other reasons like mileage compromise, wind noise, etc. I'm still considering going the "Slim Potatohead" route with a folding camper trailer. Anyway, Mike, I enjoy watching your videos as learning tools plus great entertainment; living vicariously through other peoples' adventures.
I traded in my Tundra for a 4Runner. In the Southeast, a narrow platform made more sense. I also have kids so the Tacoma was not an option due to the leg space in the back. I think it's important to understand your terrain before purchasing. Obviously a Tundra would be a better fit in areas like Utah than North Carolina.
I agree with your opening statement. The best vehicle is the one you currently have. Throw some basic mods to get you through whatever obstacles you may encounter. Lockers are a huge plus. Then build your inside storage for all your gear. This way, you’ll pretty much enjoy whatever your platform is. My vehicle is an 86 Bronco. It does everything i ask of it. Especially since the roof is removable and the tailgate folds down. Ive been able to haul 4x8 plywood with it.
A diesel station wagon. For towing and cargo. If fuel economy is not as much if a concern then turbo petrol, ie buy Subaru Outback XT, instead of some silly truck or suv.
I'm going through this decision now with Silverado vs. Tahoe (I need full size because I'm 6'6"). I currently have one of each but want to sell them both get something newer. I had a camper shell for the Silverado but then the problem is getting it on and off and storing it when not using it. I thought about a truck bed tent but I like having something solid between me and bears. I like having the utility of a truck but realized that I can always rent a truck (or trailer) when I need one. The Tahoe is much easier to drive where I normally drive (city and suburbs) because it's shorter. Now that I can get a Tahoe with fold flat seats I'm probably going to get a Tahoe.
A comparable size SUV will hold about the same amount if the SUV has flat folding or removable seats if you do not load past the roofline. The only things that would matter is what you would be hauling like a dirty load that you would use a truck for or something you want to keep clean and protected from the elements or a dirty truck bed without a canopy. Camping with an SUV you can have all your supplies and gear in the vehicle with you and secured and have full access to the entire vehicle from the driver seat to the rear. A truck you are either blocked off from the cab, the bed, the rooftop tent depending on which area you are in. Will be a pain if you need something in another section and you have to put on your shoes or coat and have to get out and the weather sucks. And also on the drive to your destination with people in an SUV you can have someone reach in the back and grab some snacks if you didn't have an empty seat for your snacks or blanket for comfort for example. Sure a truck would be better if you were doing some serious off roading and needed to bring an over sized spare tire and some gas cans or are going hunting. And yes some SUV's are pretnders but there are some just as capable. There are more rack options for trucks to customize for your needs but you are still stuck with the scenario I mentioned earlier about keeping things protected from the elements and have access to within the vehicle. But then again a truck is better if you need to pack heavy items that are not easier to load onto a bed vs the roof. For most people an SUV makes more sense as a daily vehicle and a weekend excursion vehicle for hauling people and stuff and a SUV with 3 rows of seat with the back two rows able to fold flat into the floor is really versatile. As for a truck it will only hold 5 people like a car and most people don't need need a truck unless they hunt or use it for work purposes. And as for not having to secure things down in a truck? Sure if you don't care about what you're hauling. It just comes down to different strokes for different folks and not one is better than the other.
Had a Ford F250 and sold it as I never really used it much anymore. Got a 1994 80 series Land Cruiser and love it! having it swapped over to a 5.3 LS as I type this. First SUV I've ever had, but only miss my truck every now and then. great video!
For me, the 4Runner has the strong advantage. Reasons: to keep my gear more secure when parked, and when the weather is cold or raining, I can “live” in the 4Runner cab with direct access to my mattress, gear and dometic fridge. Not having to get out of the vehicle is huge when cold or snowing/raining. Lastly, when I had a Tacoma, gear in the bed gets incredibly dusty and dirty even with a topper. No contest, SUV all day.
So I've got four children and number 5 on the way. Don't care if anyone thinks that's too many kids. I dont, they're a blessing from the Lord, so, for that reason we had limited options on a 4x4 vehicle. A few years back I bought a 2001 7.3 powerstroke Ford Excursion 4x4, put a lift on it, BFG all terrains on it. It's a champ. Seats 8. We put a cage barrier behind the 3rd row for the dog to have plenty of room. Sure it's old but they hold their value and last, it gets great fuel mileage for its class even when towing (I've heard of some getting 22 mpg). Kids love it. I don't dog it out but for an off road capable family vehicle, it works for us. Mom has a 2001 2500 burb and it runs like a champ too. Lower fuel mileage though. If you have a large family like mine and you want a newer off road vehicle I would probably stick with the Land Cruiser ** edit: But I would also say if you have less than 6 people in your family or don't plan on hauling around the neighborhood then a 4 door truck is definitely a great choice. We do often need to haul stuff that I wouldnt want inside my cabin. So a trailer is required or heck just own a truck and an SUV. Rarely do I ever need to haul heavy loads of materials when out on a trail. Whatever I need fits on the roof or in the back so having a truck for different purposes works for us.
Greetings from Germany, I use a 2wd Toyota C-HR for camping trips or for weekend trips with the bikes. Here in Europe we have less chances to go off road with our car's. I kicked the back seats out an build a Plattform to carry my gear or sleep in the car when the weather is to bad for the tent. For bad roads an lite off road trails I lifted the car 2 inches an mounted all terrain tyres, on the roof I have a cargo carrier for extra gear . My camping setup is a ground tent.
I have a Tacoma mostly because it was the most available thing to me and I got a great deal on a 2014. I started thinking about overlanding a lot last winter when I started watching Mike's videos and was torn between my preference. (mostly from following Mike and Fotornr.) In the long run, I'm glad I chose the truck route because as Mike said; "I do a lot of 'Truck Stuff'."
I am fortunate enough to kinda get both! Last Summer (2019) my wife and I picked up a 1985 Toyota 4Runner 1st gen. Its an SUV that you can take the top off and have a similar utility of a truck! I LOVE IT! It's just going to be a looong time before we can afford to get it built up to where we want it but will be an amazing investment.
I just purchased a new Tacoma. I’ve had four wheel drives before, but this is the first vehicle with a rear locking diff. I purchased this specially for overlanding. I am wanting to get a swift model four wheel camper. That is my ultimate setup. I’ve always been more of a truck guy, than an SUV guy. Thanks for the videos. They are fun to watch.

Wagon (here in Aus an SUV isn't an offroader). Mine is set up so I can disappear for an indefinite length of time. All I've got to worry about is diesel, collecting water & hunting. Everything is in my rig, including my bed. Worth a look.
So there IS a good reason we call trucks utes in Australia! As you said they're more utilitarian! We also call SUV's wagons . . . . . And personally I use SUV to describe soft roaders (ie wagons that aren't 4wd) . . . . Anyway I have a wagon and love it! Like the way everything is more secure from weather and theives, although a ute would be handy from time to time but otherwise the bed would be a waste of space for my needs. Good vid mate 👍
SUV man here! I've HAD to drive pickups for work (tades) mist of my life. Sick of 'em. My rig now is a WJ, with an SUV tent. I REFUSE to spend $1200 plus for tent, plus I have a 115 lb dog. I am NOT luggin' his big ass up a ladder every night.lmao
I owned two Toyota trucks over the years and they were by far the best vehicles I ever owned, with that said I always wanted an fj cruiser. Last fall I bought a 2011 trail teams addition with rear lockers, sliders and bilstiens from the factory. So far I love it. I have been toying with the idea of picking up a fzj80 for a dedicated build. We'll see.

You're totally right about the limitations sleeping in a shorter bed. My plan specifically is for my dogs to sleep in the bed in the camper shell, and I will have the skycamp mini , march 2, up top for me and the lady friend. Once again love your vids and tips!
I want an older, smaller Tacoma for hunting and all my off-roading type stuff. I want a 4 runner for the family and storage and kinda tactical vehicle with a bunch of gear
You mentioned my exact reason I have my van, camping in bad weather there is nothing better. I use the van specifically for road trips. We take the motorcycles in a enclosed trailer to places to ride like deals gap.

I know it's picky, but as a prepper with an imagination, I love the idea of being able to go from my tent/bed straight to my driver's seat without having to expose myself to potential threats outside. I'd rather not have to customize it myself, but.... We'll see.
I have the exact same thought!! I bought a 06 tundra that the full rear window lowers and then I bought a mid rise leer camper that the windows removable! It’s is awesome, I have two young kids I can sleep in the front cab and me and my wife sleep in the back! Have full access
@@ransombaggins9301 it looks kinda ugly with a cap but you could get a Chevy Avalanche. The mid gate (section between cab and bed) folds down and the window locks into the bottom part. Then the rear seat folds down. You can have a crew cab or 8 foot bed within a few minutes. Also mechanically it’s all still a truck. They even have heavy duty versions.
It all depends cwhat your definition of "overlanding" is. If overlanding is driving from state park to state park a truck is great. If "overlanding" is taking the path only hikers would usually see, then an SUV is the only answer.
I haven’t chosen yet, iM trying figure out what makes sense. At this point I’m leaning toward making my own thing with a truck for me and my kiddos. Thanks for the food for thought, So much more things to consider than I initially thought.
Love my Land Rover 💕 Excited for the Bronco as well. Toyotas have too much "bulletproof" tax on them now. I take care of my Land Rover and it stays pretty reliable for me and my family, not to mention, it's a nice departure to Jeeps, which dominate most trails.

The point about flying obects in a crash is very VERY accurate. I had an unfortunate wreck a little less than two months ago, and while nothing hit me stuff got tossed EVERYWHERE inside my SUV. At least 1 bottle of Marvel broke open somehow and splashed all over. Did I learn my lesson and purchase a truck next? Well no I didn't, I went from a 98 Montero to an 06 now and am thrilled. I deeply lament the loss of the rear locker, but hey, that can be added if i really wanted to.

I've always done full sized but for no particular reason. As I get more into overlanding and off-roading, I'm seeing a thinner truck could preferable in some places.

I went from 87 toyota pickup 4wd to 88 4runner. My family expanded so I needed the room. And it's awesome bringing more people with you on adventures. Although I do miss just throwing stuff in the bed lol. Definitely will be getting another pickup and have best of both worlds
I had a Cherokee, then had three kids. Now have a Ford F-450. Overlander conversion (super singles, etc.) is in process. Parking is indeed a pain in the ass, but pack it right and it's big enough for almost anything.
I've had CJs, Wagoneers, Cherokees, 3500 to 1500 pickups, 4Runners, and I have settled on a 2006 Tundra Limited Double Cab with a topper, for the bed size and V8 engine, with a standard good ground clearance. This vehicle I will be installing a bed platform with drawers, etc. Maybe later an moderately sized slide-in camper. Lots of versatility. All of course have had 4WD.

We had a truck (88 Ranger 4wd) that we had a shell on and slept on a platform in the back with our gear underneath. We now have a 2016 Jeep Wrangler JKUR and we sleep in the back on a platform with our gear underneath. We prefer the Jeep only because we can put the seats back in and use it to haul friends and family or take the seats out and haul cargo. For us, the Jeep is more versatile. But you should choose whatever vehicle best suits the majority of your usage.
I'm a Toyota truck guy, but what I don't like are the short beds. I have an older 88 Longbed with a shell and excellent headroom. I sleep in the bed and have no need for a tent! For me this is the way to go.!
I went camping with my gf at the time in my Honda civic. The site was off a dirt road and it was standard camping. It was nice but we didn't bring enough 'stuff' to be comfortable. I now have a new Ford ranger with the long bed. Long bed makes such a difference day to day living in the city. Not going back
So glad your made this video! I own a 2012 4Runner Trail Edition & a 2018 Tacoma Off-Road (both semi moded) & people ask me all the time too which one do i recommend? I give them the same answer. What do YOU plan on doing with it? I've been doing camping/4x4 Off-Roading since the 80s & take the one that will benefit me the most. Neither is wrong or right. Just have fun & experience life to the fullest with whichever you choose to get 🤙
In urban areas the best thing about a truck is that the rooftop tent isnt so high that you cant park in your garage, parking structures or just about half of the places anywhere but trucks are more expensive. My old 4runner will have to do till i can afford to get more serious. Plus having storage sliders is easier to purchase then a whole custom trunk setup. I bought a 4runner for 1.5k and just sleep in the back. Maybe ill make some window insulation in the future. Used suv much cheaper to get into car camping/overlanding.
Recently started getting back into camping and taking an interest in overlanding. There aren't a ton of serious places to go i've but slightly modified my awd crossover and its been plenty to get started and have a good enjoyable time. When i need a new vehicle I will definitely be looking into a truck with proper 4wd but for the time being having a good and making do with the crossover.
So what's your choice, Truck or SUV?

I have put gravel, bricks, fertilizer, and a bunch of other stuff in the back of my SUV. I have pushed my rear air suspension to its limit at least 10 times. I do what I want LOL.
I do similar things with the back of our Toyota Sienna since all of the seats either fold down or come out.
One day my buddy was moving some stuff and was doing multiple trips with his dads truck. I offered to drive our van over and take a load off his hands. I slid a whole couch in, slid a dresser in along side it, shoved a bedside table in after the dresser, shut the tailgate and drove it to his Dads house. The look on his dads face when I backed the van into his driveway and he saw what was inside was priceless.
Once drove from AZ to Cali, purchased and picked up a chinese cnc laser, and drove it back to AZ in one day. Got 25ish mpg the whole way too. :)

I’ve had an SUV for 16yrs (4runners). I was going to purchase a pickup truck, but ended up buying a 5x10’ trailer. This is nice bc I can drive where I’d like and haul what I “need”. I’m not one who rock crawls, mainly trails and beach. I can drop the trailer (lock it down while gone) and head out on the trails/beach. This year I’m looking to start using the 4runner as my tent. Just me and the dog. Otherwise I use a ground tent. Great vid!

What kind of trailer did u buy? I have a 4runner Limited 4x4. I wanted the AWD at all times but then realize the panels and bumpers are lower than the SR5 or trail edition. So now I'm trying to figure out how to modify that so i can get better ground clearance.

The reason I bought a 4runner over a Tacoma was to store and secure my coolers when I go long range fishing. Sometimes I’ll be gone for two weeks and it would be a bummer if my coolers weren’t there when I get back. I just wish Toyota did make a better securing system in the back to tie down equipment just like you mentioned.
Wire bike locks work good to lock stuff to the in bed tie downs in a truck. Use them to secure gas cans when going places with my four wheeler in the back.

The main thing drawing me towards a SUV is the "you can sleep inside" factor, not just for the weather, but as a precaution as a prepper. However, I like the extra options a truck offers and I hadn't considered the higher need to secure things down in a SUV. Maybe I'll look more into trucks with camper shell mods... I just don't really like how they look... I too am pretty interested in how the new Ford Bronco will turn out.
I have a Hummer and there is space for days in that thing. There is no need for me to buy a Roof tent.

If you get an extended cab, sleep is possible during the cold months. But if you live in warm areas, a cap works fine for sleeping in the truck box.

I came from a series of Jeep Wranglers and still love them, but now that I have a 2018 Tacoma off road I am loving it, and can’t see myself being without a truck again for all the versatility! The truck has been great to haul and facilitate my mountain and fat biking.

She decided she wants a truck, instead of her Tahoe( I hate that thing) So pretty sure she is going with 2020 Tacoma off road premium, I am turning my Rubicon into a full time ranch vehicle, and getting 2020 4 Runner off road premium. Too much dust down here for cloth seats( been there done that) so we both want the fake leather, also helps when you have 4 dogs, and an occasional grand kid tagging along.

I have like the SUV platform, with trailers. We have several trailers. Most modern trucks will not haul a 4x8 sheet of plywood or large toys. You may not want to put gravel, sand, garbage or big loads in your new truck bed.
So you will want a trailer anyway.
SUV works for my lifestyle, with trailers and an old full size pickup.
I don’t do much of it anymore because of health issues and age but back in the day I took a 1976 Oldsmobile Cutlas off-road more then most people buying these big nice 4x4’s do now. I eventually got to start driving four wheel drives and I absolutely love them. I have had both trucks and SUV’s. I love them all. They each have their perspective favorability on the trails. But don’t ever think just because you drive a two wheel drive that you can’t get it muddy.
My Sweetie and I have been wheelin' Jeep Grand Cherokees for years. Our current overlander is a '01 Grand Cherokee Limited with 4.7 V8, limited slip diffs all around, 3" lift, bit larger tires, factory skip plates and tow hooks. We sleep on a memory foam mattress in the back and use a tent to store our stuff in, use as a changing room and bathroom if we take a portable toilet with. Have a roof rack and rear cargo rack for stove, chairs and tent. It's nice to be able to throw duffel bags in the front seats and climb in the back if its raining or windy and not have to set up anything outside.
P.S. If we need to haul furniture or what not we have a utility trailer that costs $0 to sit next to the garage.

1996 Jeep XJ is amazing. I had my parents sleep in the back with seats folded and I slept in the passenger side front seat. Wasn’t a 5 star hotel but it was great for Joshua Tree National Park

Good stuff. I bought a Tacoma in 2015 because my Subaru just couldn’t cut where I wanted to go. I then heard about this cool thing call “Overlanding” which I’ve translated into fancy car camping, or in your terms #weekenderlander. Since then I’ve gotten a lift, bigger tires, rims, rack, RTT, traction boards, and who knows how much gear. I’m also of the mindset that more money I dump into my build the more I use it. Keep the videos coming they’ve helped me a ton.

I’ve had 2 Tacoma’s. 2003 extended cab had it for 12 years no problems ever ran perfect when traded it in, traded that foolishly for a 2015 Tacoma quad cab, loved it, intended to buy it after lease but couldn’t afford to keep it. Missed my truck so much I bought a 4x4 I could afford. Researched and shopped for a long time and picked up a 2002 garage kept Toyota Sequoia. Dudes....I absolutely love this thing. It is so comfortable. If can off-road like a mofo. And I can not believe how much storage it has with the back seats folded down. Way more than both of my Tacoma’s. Plus I never have to worry about rain, theft, or things blowing out. Good point about strapping things down though.

I have a Tundra 4wd, and do pretty hardcore offroading. All I complain about it is the long wheel base. Im always having to get down and check if the truck will hit the bottom or angling so I can go up steep hills. But the power and bed space is super useful to me. I have a lot of stuff I carry around and tow so I manage
I just purchased a Chevy Avalanche. It's an SUV/Truck. It's the only truck that you crawl into the bed from inside your truck. You can camp inside it and comes with Built-in coolers. It's going to be my Overlanding/camping truck.
I've been writing for a prepper website for quite some time. I've done some interesting stuff with my XL7 Vitara (which is going to be highly modified once I can come back to my country) like jumping over a tree that some thugs had cut down to screw us.
This said, you need the sturdiest vehicle you can get. If I could get an armored surplus car with 8 wheels, I'd go with it.
There is not too much thoughts to waste on this. Get something tough, easy to repair, low-tech, if you want to overland. Keep it simple and you will keep it running.
Go with fancy tech, and you'll be in trouble in the middle of nowhere.
Don't ask me how I learned this.
I live full time out of a 2500 suburban and its perfect for me! full size bed inside, dual zone climate control if the weather is too cold or hot, 40 gallons of fuel plus 6 more in rotopax. Its not to big or wide to go on 97% of the trails I run. Plus they are cheap to find and cheap to fix and totally bombproof! Just wish it had more power and id be totally happy with my build!

I've had both. One big advantage of the truck route is weight capacity. For example, a Tacoma has about a 400lb greater carrying capacity than a 4Runner. Bumpers, winches, armor, refrigerators, people and all of their gear can add up in a hurry, maxing out a vehicles GVWR.
Wow, I thought I was the only one with the "affliction" of multiple car syndrome. I'm almost 73 and between my wives (4) and vehicles (61) my path to wealth got curtailed. Sports cars were my passion for many years but now my SUV is more than sufficient. My wife no longer drives so we kept the SUV and sold my pick up (4X4) and my Harley Fatboy (sigh!). Another commentor mentioned that owning a pick up invites your friends and neighbors to help them move...so true. I love the fact that I can sleep in my SUV and not have to worry about setting up a tent or tent cot which is what I do during warmer days. I thought about getting a roof top tent, AluCab (?), but taking it off when not in use did not appeal to me plus other reasons like mileage compromise, wind noise, etc. I'm still considering going the "Slim Potatohead" route with a folding camper trailer. Anyway, Mike, I enjoy watching your videos as learning tools plus great entertainment; living vicariously through other peoples' adventures.

I traded in my Tundra for a 4Runner. In the Southeast, a narrow platform made more sense. I also have kids so the Tacoma was not an option due to the leg space in the back.
I think it's important to understand your terrain before purchasing. Obviously a Tundra would be a better fit in areas like Utah than North Carolina.
Or a Toyota Seqouia; the SUV version of the Tundra

I agree with your opening statement. The best vehicle is the one you currently have. Throw some basic mods to get you through whatever obstacles you may encounter. Lockers are a huge plus. Then build your inside storage for all your gear. This way, you’ll pretty much enjoy whatever your platform is. My vehicle is an 86 Bronco. It does everything i ask of it. Especially since the roof is removable and the tailgate folds down. Ive been able to haul 4x8 plywood with it.

A diesel station wagon. For towing and cargo. If fuel economy is not as much if a concern then turbo petrol, ie buy Subaru Outback XT, instead of some silly truck or suv.
I'm going through this decision now with Silverado vs. Tahoe (I need full size because I'm 6'6"). I currently have one of each but want to sell them both get something newer. I had a camper shell for the Silverado but then the problem is getting it on and off and storing it when not using it. I thought about a truck bed tent but I like having something solid between me and bears. I like having the utility of a truck but realized that I can always rent a truck (or trailer) when I need one. The Tahoe is much easier to drive where I normally drive (city and suburbs) because it's shorter. Now that I can get a Tahoe with fold flat seats I'm probably going to get a Tahoe.
A comparable size SUV will hold about the same amount if the SUV has flat folding or removable seats if you do not load past the roofline. The only things that would matter is what you would be hauling like a dirty load that you would use a truck for or something you want to keep clean and protected from the elements or a dirty truck bed without a canopy.
Camping with an SUV you can have all your supplies and gear in the vehicle with you and secured and have full access to the entire vehicle from the driver seat to the rear. A truck you are either blocked off from the cab, the bed, the rooftop tent depending on which area you are in. Will be a pain if you need something in another section and you have to put on your shoes or coat and have to get out and the weather sucks. And also on the drive to your destination with people in an SUV you can have someone reach in the back and grab some snacks if you didn't have an empty seat for your snacks or blanket for comfort for example.
Sure a truck would be better if you were doing some serious off roading and needed to bring an over sized spare tire and some gas cans or are going hunting. And yes some SUV's are pretnders but there are some just as capable.
There are more rack options for trucks to customize for your needs but you are still stuck with the scenario I mentioned earlier about keeping things protected from the elements and have access to within the vehicle. But then again a truck is better if you need to pack heavy items that are not easier to load onto a bed vs the roof.
For most people an SUV makes more sense as a daily vehicle and a weekend excursion vehicle for hauling people and stuff and a SUV with 3 rows of seat with the back two rows able to fold flat into the floor is really versatile. As for a truck it will only hold 5 people like a car and most people don't need need a truck unless they hunt or use it for work purposes. And as for not having to secure things down in a truck? Sure if you don't care about what you're hauling.
It just comes down to different strokes for different folks and not one is better than the other.

I'm 18 and a welder, my rig is a 99 ram 1500 4x4 v8 stick shift, ive got a camper shell for 8ft bed, and its super comfy
For me, the 4Runner has the strong advantage. Reasons: to keep my gear more secure when parked, and when the weather is cold or raining, I can “live” in the 4Runner cab with direct access to my mattress, gear and dometic fridge. Not having to get out of the vehicle is huge when cold or snowing/raining. Lastly, when I had a Tacoma, gear in the bed gets incredibly dusty and dirty even with a topper. No contest, SUV all day.
So I've got four children and number 5 on the way. Don't care if anyone thinks that's too many kids. I dont, they're a blessing from the Lord, so, for that reason we had limited options on a 4x4 vehicle. A few years back I bought a 2001 7.3 powerstroke Ford Excursion 4x4, put a lift on it, BFG all terrains on it. It's a champ. Seats 8. We put a cage barrier behind the 3rd row for the dog to have plenty of room. Sure it's old but they hold their value and last, it gets great fuel mileage for its class even when towing (I've heard of some getting 22 mpg). Kids love it. I don't dog it out but for an off road capable family vehicle, it works for us. Mom has a 2001 2500 burb and it runs like a champ too. Lower fuel mileage though. If you have a large family like mine and you want a newer off road vehicle I would probably stick with the Land Cruiser

But I would also say if you have less than 6 people in your family or don't plan on hauling around the neighborhood then a 4 door truck is definitely a great choice. We do often need to haul stuff that I wouldnt want inside my cabin. So a trailer is required or heck just own a truck and an SUV. Rarely do I ever need to haul heavy loads of materials when out on a trail. Whatever I need fits on the roof or in the back so having a truck for different purposes works for us.

Greetings from Germany, I use a 2wd Toyota C-HR for camping trips or for weekend trips with the bikes. Here in Europe we have less chances to go off road with our car's. I kicked the back seats out an build a Plattform to carry my gear or sleep in the car when the weather is to bad for the tent. For bad roads an lite off road trails I lifted the car 2 inches an mounted all terrain tyres, on the roof I have a cargo carrier for extra gear . My camping setup is a ground tent.
I have a Tacoma mostly because it was the most available thing to me and I got a great deal on a 2014. I started thinking about overlanding a lot last winter when I started watching Mike's videos and was torn between my preference. (mostly from following Mike and Fotornr.) In the long run, I'm glad I chose the truck route because as Mike said; "I do a lot of 'Truck Stuff'."
I am fortunate enough to kinda get both! Last Summer (2019) my wife and I picked up a 1985 Toyota 4Runner 1st gen. Its an SUV that you can take the top off and have a similar utility of a truck! I LOVE IT! It's just going to be a looong time before we can afford to get it built up to where we want it but will be an amazing investment.

I just purchased a new Tacoma. I’ve had four wheel drives before, but this is the first vehicle with a rear locking diff. I purchased this specially for overlanding. Wagon (here in Aus an SUV isn't an offroader). Mine is set up so I can disappear for an indefinite length of time. All I've got to worry about is diesel, collecting water & hunting. Everything is in my rig, including my bed. Worth a look.
So there IS a good reason we call trucks utes in Australia! As you said they're more utilitarian! We also call SUV's wagons . . . . . And personally I use SUV to describe soft roaders (ie wagons that aren't 4wd) . . . . Anyway I have a wagon and love it! Like the way everything is more secure from weather and theives, although a ute would be handy from time to time but otherwise the bed would be a waste of space for my needs.

I owned two Toyota trucks over the years and they were by far the best vehicles I ever owned, with that said I always wanted an fj cruiser. Last fall I bought a 2011 trail teams addition with rear lockers, sliders and bilstiens from the factory. So far I love it. I have been toying with the idea of picking up a fzj80 for a dedicated build. We'll see.

I am using the Camper shell method with my short bed ZR2. You're totally right about the limitations sleeping in a shorter bed. My plan specifically is for my dogs to sleep in the bed in the camper shell, and I will have the skycamp mini , march 2, up top for me and the lady friend. Once again love your vids and tips!
I used to go overlanding in my kia forte all the time. Granted I did have clearance issues, but skill is more important than gear in most cases
I want an older, smaller Tacoma for hunting and all my off-roading type stuff. I want a 4 runner for the family and storage and kinda tactical vehicle with a bunch of gear

I know it's picky, but as a prepper with an imagination, I love the idea of being able to go from my tent/bed straight to my driver's seat without having to expose myself to potential threats outside. I have the exact same thought!! I bought a 06 tundra that the full rear window lowers and then I bought a mid rise leer camper that the windows removable! It’s is awesome, I have two young kids I can sleep in the front cab and me and my wife sleep in the back! Have full access
@@ransombaggins9301 it looks kinda ugly with a cap but you could get a Chevy Avalanche. The mid gate (section between cab and bed) folds down and the window locks into the bottom part. Then the rear seat folds down. You can have a crew cab or 8 foot bed within a few minutes. Also mechanically it’s all still a truck. They even have heavy duty versions.
It all depends cwhat your definition of "overlanding" is. If overlanding is driving from state park to state park a truck is great. If "overlanding" is taking the path only hikers would usually see, then an SUV is the only answer.

Toyotas have too much "bulletproof" tax on them now. I take care of my Land Rover and it stays pretty reliable for me and my family, not to mention, it's a nice departure to Jeeps, which dominate most trails.

The point about flying obects in a crash is very VERY accurate. I had an unfortunate wreck a little less than two months ago, and while nothing hit me stuff got tossed EVERYWHERE inside my SUV. At least 1 bottle of Marvel broke open somehow and splashed all over. Did I learn my lesson and purchase a truck next? Well no I didn't, I went from a 98 Montero to an 06 now and am thrilled. I deeply lament the loss of the rear locker, but hey, that can be added if i really wanted to.

I went from 87 toyota pickup 4wd to 88 4runner. My family expanded so I needed the room. And it's awesome bringing more people with you on adventures. Although I do miss just throwing stuff in the bed lol. Definitely will be getting another pickup and have best of both worlds

I had a Cherokee, then had three kids. Now have a Ford F-450. Overlander conversion (super singles, etc.) is in process. Parking is indeed a pain in the ass, but pack it right and it's big enough for almost anything.

I've had CJs, Wagoneers, Cherokees, 3500 to 1500 pickups, 4Runners, and I have settled on a 2006 Tundra Limited Double Cab with a topper, for the bed size and V8 engine, with a standard good ground clearance. This vehicle I will be installing a bed platform with drawers, etc. Maybe later an moderately sized slide-in camper. Lots of versatility. All of course have had 4WD.

We had a truck (88 Ranger 4wd) that we had a shell on and slept on a platform in the back with our gear underneath. We now have a 2016 Jeep Wrangler JKUR and we sleep in the back on a platform with our gear underneath. We prefer the Jeep only because we can put the seats back in and use it to haul friends and family or take the seats out and haul cargo. For us, the Jeep is more versatile. But you should choose whatever vehicle best suits the majority of your usage.
Just Incase y'all didn't know, a truck has a bed
I'm a Toyota truck guy, but what I don't like are the short beds. I have an older 88 Longbed with a shell and excellent headroom. I sleep in the bed and have no need for a tent! For me this is the way to go.!
I went camping with my gf at the time in my Honda civic. The site was off a dirt road and it was standard camping. It was nice but we didn't bring enough 'stuff' to be comfortable. I now have a new Ford ranger with the long bed. Long bed makes such a difference day to day living in the city. Not going back
So glad your made this video! I own a 2012 4Runner Trail Edition & a 2018 Tacoma Off-Road (both semi moded) & people ask me all the time too which one do i recommend? I give them the same answer. What do YOU plan on doing with it? I've been doing camping/4x4 Off-Roading since the 80s & take the one that will benefit me the most. Neither is wrong or right. Just have fun & experience life to the fullest with whichever you choose to get 🤙

In urban areas the best thing about a truck is that the rooftop tent isnt so high that you cant park in your garage, parking structures or just about half of the places anywhere but trucks are more expensive. My old 4runner will have to do till i can afford to get more serious. Plus having storage sliders is easier to purchase then a whole custom trunk setup. I bought a 4runner for 1.5k and just sleep in the back. Maybe ill make some window insulation in the future. Used suv much cheaper to get into car camping/overlanding.
I ended up getting a hummer h3t alpha bc my corvettes approach angles were pretty bad
For my day to day use, a RAV4 would be way ok BUT... man, I really love the TRD OffRoad 4Runner...! It’s a battle between the head and the heart.

Recently started getting back into camping and taking an interest in overlanding. There aren't a ton of serious places to go i've but slightly modified my awd crossover and its been plenty to get started and have a good enjoyable time. When i need a new vehicle I will definitely be looking into a truck with proper 4wd but for the time being having a good and making do with the crossover.
