Earlier on that day I had been at one of my German lectures, studying Geography with German at my local university in Derby as a part-time mature undergraduate in the Nineties (I'm an adoptive 'Derbyshire Canary'). My lecturer was a Bayern fan and when we parted that late afternoon I could tell that she thought we didn't stand an earthly as I brought up the match and I thought the same too, more keeping up a show of bravado that we were going to get something out of the tie. I just had to ask her (in my best German!) what exactly had happened the previous week the next time we met!
I did that my freshman year of highschool when Norwich beat Tottenham in the FA Cup. Apparently my orchestra teacher was a Spurs fan, and me showing up to class with a Norwich scarf did not endear me to him.
And Norwich City also have the chance this weekend of sending Birmingham City down to the English football's third tier. I'm an Aston Villa supporter to give you some perspective. 😊😊😁
The issue with parachute payments is that they shouldn't be needed in the first place as there shouldn't be the same financial divide between the premier league and the championship. Ultimately the premier league shouldn't be a separate entity from the EFL and so money could be much more evenly scaled all throughout the EFL. The divide creates a need for the parachute payments as if a side with premier league wages gets relegated it is then very difficult to financially keep up with the big drop off in revenue. Although this has the draw back of further advantaging an already strong team in the championship making it harder for teams without parachute payments. As a Norwich fan it annoys me when people accuse us of having some plan of not trying in the prem and getting relegated to farm parachute payments. Not only is this untrue with us spending quite big on our last promotion but also the money is far better if we stay up so wanting to get relegated makes no sense.
Gabby on Talk Sport was constantly spouting garbage about Norwich not trying in the Premier League. Obviously he's not very bright and doesn't understand how football finances work. Now clubs have started being taken to task for breaking FFP rules he might understand that spending above your means has consequences.

Being a Swindon Town supporter and reflecting on our near death experience at the hands of the Football league and the SLAP ON THE WRIST WITH A WET BUS TICKET MANCHESTER CITY GOT FOR THE SAME OFFENCE, I Have nothing but contempt for the way English football is run.
The Vengaboys team. Yeah, I'm slightly older that you (just kidding 😛). I knew that you were talking about the canaries, since I'm from Spain and we have plenty of those birds here.
Top stuff again Nieve. That's the first itme I've seen someone laugh about parachute payments. I thought pyramid football clubs got real pyramids in their gardens so I need to double-check that for accuracy.
They need to stop parachute payments. The tens of millions those clubs get in tv deals in the premier league then getting more money than their competition in the championship is why the same clubs mostly go up and down. That’s why Ipswich taking on those parachute clubs is a great story
Very funny , full of History, facts and witty , didn’t realise we had been relegated so many times , obviously a mind block , maybe you could have a word with Delia 😂
Reduce the parachute payments and throw more funds (not just the difference) into consolidation payments for the whole pyramid. The gap between the Championship and League One is as big as the gap between the Championship and League One.
Given that global elite sport (eg the Premier League) is now essentially a business entertainment model to be monetized to the hilt, it will not be long until the Premier League becomes a franchise and relegation/promotion disappears. Essentially to prevent a Euro Super League, the Premier League (and any other major European league) will have to come to terms with this business model or a Euro Super League will. You only have to look at other elite global sports and other major consumer markets to realize that promotion/relegation is an anachronistic reminder of a time gone by when sport for its own sake, the sense of social stability and community and the aspirational dreams it created have been slowly suffocated by the tentacles of global capitalism. I don't like that one little bit but that's the reality.😥
Let me take you on a trip in time back to the late Seventies and my teenage years. My home city club, Derby County had enjoyed its greatest ever era, which is still unmatched and of course I had enjoyed that success as a couple of notable local celebrations. However, as younger brothers do like to be a bit different, I had, earlier in the decade, briefly dallied with Derbyshire's other League club, Chesterfield to express that difference from my Rams-supporting older brother. Then along came, in a strange twist of irony, the 1978 FA Cup Final, where Ipswich Town were described during the build-up to the big match as the 'Country Cousins' to big-city Arsenal, so I felt myself rooting for Ipswich, maybe as a fellow 'Country Cousin' here in Derbyshire. This made me start to have a thing for what could be described as the 'Yokel Clubs' of the provincial East, South and South-West - the likes of Ipswich Town, Southampton - the conquerors of mighty Manchester United in the 1976 FA Cup Final - Bristol City and Norwich City, but it was only by quite late on in 1979, after reading a story in the paper referring to one-time Division Three South non-entities, Norwich City hitting the top of the League for the first time in their history after a victory over the aforementioned Arsenal that that momentum started by Ipswich about eighteen months previously found its end point in the local rival camp of Norwich. I think I was taken by the distinctive yellow and green strip and the very stylish, attacking football that John Bond's team, including a scorer of an England goal in a World Cup Final, Martin Peters, played. Thanks, Nieve, for this first-class analysis of the financial background to the phenomenon of 'Yo-Yo' (Yokel?) Clubs and for that trip around Carrow Road. The financing of football will never be perfect and there will forever be an especially aggrieved portion of clubs and their supporters. However, I would be prepared to make a small sacrifice to the benefit of clubs lower down the pecking order, while still hanging on to the majority as it is a reward for well-run clubs like Norwich. How strange that my home city club has almost become legend as a particularly badly-run club, in that context! It does appear to have turned a corner this season, nevertheless, so well done to my brother's lot!
Parachute payments are one of the worst things ever to be added to the game. They only actually started to exists as effectively a bribe, the plan with the premier league was to eventually get the number of clubs down to 18 but for it to be done in stages. For the reduction to happen though clubs had to be vote on it and at that point the number of votes to pass a vote was so high that those at risk of going down could outvote the reduction. So parachute payments were used a a bribe to get them to agree to go to a 20 team league. They never could get the vote down to 18 through though and its been off the table for a while. Now it seems any time there is a vote on anything the relegation threatened clubs use it as a way to get the parachute payments increased. They are now at a point it has basically created a situation where its not just Norwich but a handful of others who are yoyo clubs, they spend a season or two on the prem, drop down and spend a season or maybe 2 in the championship before in most cases getting back up. There are obviously some that completely implode but usually when a team falls out of the cycle by not getting back in 3 seasons some other team, usually who have spent to a level thats dangerous on the hedge that they get into the PL takes their place as a yo-yo club. It just forces all Championship clubs to spend in a less than sustainable way and it also filters down through the rest of the EFL. It would be a lot better if all this parachute payments went into solidarity payments (and it needs spread fairer between the leagues, the championship gets way too much)
The irony of saying that Norwich are self funded when defending getting tens of millions gifted to them in parachute payments doesn’t even register slightly with him.
I disagree with parachute payments just as I disagree with FFP. Both are designed to reduce the flow of alternative teams between the leagues. The jeopardy and consequent change of fortunes is what makes it interesting and this is gradually being eroded.
The parachute payments have created the yo-yo clubs, or as we call them, bouncers. You see it this year with Leicester and Leeds. Next year, the 3 relegated clubs will be in the best financial position to go back up. So in a way, the other clubs in the Championship are always going to face an uphill battle to compete as the recently relegated have a huge financial advantage. In an attempt to assist retaining the employees and service vendors of the relegated clubs, they’ve given them special treatment over those who haven’t been in the PL in the past 3 years.
Being from Norfolk you have no option but support Norwich City. What about Norwich United (albeit at a very low level). There are other non-league teams in the area and if stray off the yellow brick road you could go and watch Ipswich Town, although you may find you family, the family dog and your friends will have disowned you
Another great vid. Coming from a fan of a top 6 club i do think a lot more money needs to make its way down the leagues but more split across all the clubs not just parachute payments. This is especially the case if they scrap the fa cup replays and needs to include non league.
Parachute payments are a reward for being crap. Do relegated teams factor this into “living within their means.” Seems unfair to the others in the Championship to me.
Great video Nieve. I think the parachute payment system needs overhauling. Say Oxford United get promoted to the Championship via the play offs.......and the 3 relegated Premier league teams get tens of millions of pounds in parachute payments........how is a team like Oxford going to compete in the Championship?
I believe “parachute” payments should be eliminated. Split that money up amongst the entire championship. Make the league stronger, and all teams more competitive
You're wrong. The top division was branded The Premiership until 2007. So Norwich were founder members of the premiership. It was only after 2007 it was changed to the premier league.
Controversial opinion but i think the full Premier League bunker of cash should be divided EQUALLY between ALL 92 clubs. TV companies are buying English football, not just one dvision!
The first step must be salary caps, transfer fee limits and limits on agent's fees in relation to transfers. Step two player contracts must be also capped and be a standard fee plus performance based extras. Thirdly, find a way to transition to the German system where clubs are 50%+1 fan owned, to limit the control of super rich companies and individuals.
No decaying chairs, just empty ones😂 A town fan on the news last night said we used to get 12,000 fans a week but now we're getting 30,000 coz we're winning 😂 Says everything!!
The first English ground I visited was Carrow Road, I was at college in north Norfolk at the time (November 1982) and my college mate, a Luton fan, persuaded me to go along to support Norwich against Watford, I’ve ended up a Luton fan but still have a soft spot for the Canaries.
A hard salary cap would help distribute talent, but all European leagues would have to adopt it in order to prevent said talent from leaving the league all together.
So, as a foreigner who just found out about parachute payments, doesn't that make it much harder for teams to climb the Championship, and just create an always top 6 or 7 within that league also, just like the Premier League? These "yo yo" teams must be getting much more money than the lower half of the Championship. Like I said, just my gut reaction question. Appreciate any clarification if I don't understand it correctly.
I went to Uni in Norwich (UEA or University of Arse End of England) and really loved it but yes, they were relegated from the Prem the year I started in 2005.

Thirdly, find a way to transition to the German system where clubs are 50%+1 fan owned, to limit the control of super rich companies and individuals.
Why didn't that guy mention Ipswich being favourites for promotion this season? Ha ha

The first English ground I visited was Carrow Road, I was at college in north Norfolk at the time (November 1982) and my college mate, a Luton fan, persuaded me to go along to support Norwich against Watford, I’ve ended up a Luton fan but still have a soft spot for the Canaries.
1:35 Pegg is a gangsters paradise. So Coolio.
Brilliant😂
Nice video
Just in case nobody else notices, I appreciate all the Partidge references - Norwich's finest
Created by somebody from Manchester. That always rankled.
Hints of Philomena Cunk. Love your work.
Best team in England 💛💚💛💚
A hard salary cap would help distribute talent, but all European leagues would have to adopt it in order to prevent said talent from leaving the league all together.
This is so so good!
I'm lucky enough to have NCFC as my local football club, and I wouldn't have it any other way 💛💚
We call These Clubs... "Fahrstuhlmannschaft"
Recently moved away from Norfolk and it’s made me realise how much of a beautiful city Norwich is. Otbc
Appreciate any clarification if I don't understand it correctly.
cool story, so no one can cook in Norfolk!
I went to Uni in Norwich (UEA or University of Arse End of England) and really loved it but yes, they were relegated from the Prem the year I started in 2005.
Love the Partridge-isms
