- FC Eindhoven, PSV Eindhoven's much smaller neighbours, have been competing in the second tier of Dutch football - the Eerste Divisie - since the 1977-78 season.
That's a period of 47 years.
In this documentary, HITC Sevens takes a look at FC Eindhoven's almost half-century without a promotion or relegation, which is remarkable in just how unremarkable it has been, how they've gone such a long time without going either up or down, and what the future holds for the team critics could call the world's most boring football club.

I got FM for the first time this month and chose PSV for my first save, this cleared up a lot of the questions I had about the league system & the rivalry that I hadn't yet taken the time to research

@@LimburgGaming I think that happens mainly because most (if not all) of the Amateur teams don't want to make the jump to a Professional status due to the costs associated. The only "promoted" teams in recent years have been B teams from Eredivisie clubs.
This phenomenon is relatively new. Fc Eindhoven had decades to relegate.

What I think is so interesting about the Welsh/English league systems in that some Welsh teams play in the English football pyramid and vice versa.

Wow, who'd have thought that FC Eindhoven would feature here! The impossibility to be relegated to the Tweede Divisie certainly added some boredom.
I would argue that Telstar is a strong contender for "most boring club": no glorious history, in the Eerste Divisie since 1978 (so one year less than Eindhoven) and only reaching the promotion/relegation competition six times. But they did have Van Gaal as a player.

I think an underrated reason that the EFL (esp the Championship) is so strong is that there aren't any reserve teams that clog up the fixtures and make the league as a whole look second rate, I'd imagine if a big six club had a reserve team in the EFL fans would boycott their games
Yeah, I agree. It's part of the reason why on FM, managing in the English league pyramid is pretty appealing, I don't like the system where reserve teams actually play in the same league as non-reserve teams, but it's basically present almost everywhere in Europe except for England
This remain me with Rochdale afc, they spent like 30 years in the 4th tier of English football.
Aldershot Town. 13 years in the National League, most recent seasons finishing just outside relegation. Even in 2019 when they should have been relegated, Gateshead were relegated instead for cooking the books.
Rochdale spent 30 years in the 4th Tier. Until 10ish years ago.
I think Rochdale spent something like 35 successive seasons in the 4th tier of English football although they have been relegated and promoted since that time

Fun Fact: The Hamburger SV has the same amount of promotions and relegations as FC Eindhoven, since they also got relegated once and have never in their history been promoted.
Both teams are probably the only 2nd league teams, that can claim this status. I call these clubs "the Unpromotables".

I support another club in the Eerste Divisie, the earlier mentioned Telstar. We got relegated in the season after Eindhoven got relegated, and some pundits call Telstar Eindhoven the KKD (the official sponsored name) Klassieker, for neither is getting promoted to the Eredivisie any time soon (especially considering that Telstar has less budget than most top half Tweede Divisie teams)
Video on the rise of Bodo Glimt, from having never won a top flight league title to having won 3 in the last 4 years and a 4th soon to also beating bigger teams financially in Europe. Also on why their manager Kjetil Knutsen hasn’t left for a bigger team yet.
I am impressed by your research on FC Eindhoven (although some pronounciations could need some improvements). I think making FC Eindhoven the best team in the city, would be a great challenge for Football Manager players!
Edit: FC Eindhoven actually has a promising manager this season. Verberne managed to get MVV Maastricht into the play-offs, despite having one of the lowest budgets (so comparable to Eindhoven). Maybe he can repeat this trick!

JDT is basically Manchester City of Malaysia. This club was owned by the richest person (I think) and still dominated the domestic league.

As an Indonesian, the only reason I'm aware of this club (FC Eindhoven) is because of Jay Idzes who plays for the Indonesian National Team. He was in FC Eindhoven youth teams and I think he made his first-team debut with FC Eindhoven. He also briefly played for Go Ahead Eagles Deventer and now in Serie A with Venezia, playing a crucial role in Venezia's promotion to Serie A and their currently ongoing Serie A campaign. You could argue that FC Eindhoven produced and nurtured a Serie A talent

I thought the club you mentioned here is TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, since that club, along with FC Eindhoven, almost shared the identical club's crest.
Well, Hoffenheim's crest is much more atrocious. I'd have said that it makes them look like an amateur team, but given the context of German football, that would actually be a compliment

Well - there you go! I used to live in Eindhoven. Moreover, I lived and worked in Stratum, and I've never heard of FC Eindhoven. I looked it up on the map, and rather embarrassingly, I walked home past the stadium every day without ever noticing it was there!

Boavista's story is just a video waiting to be made, what a chaos club. And yet I was surprised to hear you mention us.
From minnows, to being the only portuguese champions outside of the big 3 in decades. From playing Dortmund, Bayern, Inter, and even reaching an Uefa Cup semi-final, to playing 3rd divison football in less than 10 years. Just to come back, with no money whatsoever, survive for 5 seasons, only to be forced to sell the club to the infamous Gérard Lopez during the pandemic, who brought players like Javi Garcia, Rami, Alberth Elis, Reggie Cannon and Robert Bozenik.
All of them with salaries that were completely out of our league and whose transfers he DIDN'T PAY.
We now have a record number of OVER 30 FIFA transfer bans. We are currently playing with 17 year olds in our squad, because we haven't been able to sign new players for 2 AND A HALF SEASONS NOW. The under-19s have been relegated because every single kid who is even half decent is automaticaly shoved into the main squad. The reserve team got disbanded. Even the female squad, which used to be THE powerhouse in Portugal, only got saved from being relegated to the 3rd tier last season, because another team backed out of the competition.
It's a slow and painful death for one of the biggest clubs in Portugal, the 4th biggest football club in terms of trophies.
After Bordeaux's demise, we're the only club that Gérard López hasn't yet pushed into complete bankruptcy. We're the only ones left.
Last season we only managed to save ourselves from being relegated on the very last matchday. We have even less of a squad this year, so it's unlikely that we manage to repeat the miracle. If we get relegated, it's over. The TV money and sponsorships of first tier football are the only things keeping us afloat, once we get relegated, it's light's out at Boavista. Not even the stadium is going to survive the coming downfall.
So if y'all find yourselves in Porto, come to a Boavista match, we're basically doing our farewell tour.

Another great fact about FC Eindhoven - they are the most recent team, as far back as 1954, to win the Dutch top flight without red on their kit. Willem II - who won it the following season wearing red, white and blue - are the last team to win it without wearing exclusively white and red shirts (as Ajax, Feyenoord, PSV, Sparta, AZ and Twente, the six champions since 1955, all do).
I was in eindhoven a couple years ago and seen FC Eindhoven play Jong psv in a preseason friendly. It was pretty decent, followed them ever since

I used to have an FC Eindhoven season ticket for about six years as a kid. Going with my granddad, Eindhoven fan. And went to PSV with my dad for about ten years.

Even now, the World Series winner is the best club team in the world. The only time that wasn't the case was 1994, when the World Series was cancelled and the Japan Series winner was the best club team in the world.
While you could make the argument that a NPB club would be just as good as an MLB club, no other league comes close. This isn't the gotcha you think it is.

Baseball as a sport is a lot more localized than European football. The sport is increbily top-heavy on the club side.
There was a tournament called the Asia Series in the 2000s which was supposed to be the equivalent of the Champions League but for Asian baseball clubs
The Japan Series champion, the Korean Series champion, the Taiwan Series champion, and the Chinese National Team.
Later to be joined by the Australian Winter League champion and the European champion.
Japan and Korea so thoroughly dominated it that they started sending their minor-league squads in the second year of the tournament. And still won handily.
Japan won 5 of the 7 tournaments. Easily, might I add.
And even then, no one would fault the UEFA champions league winners for calling themselves the World Champions. Because talent has become so localized to Europe. The "Club World Cup" is a joke, with the format making it look like there's far more parity than there is. UEFA clubs don't give a shit about it.
I can only imagine being the chairman of a Tweede Divisie team, winning the league, asking whether promotion is an option, and from the distance some Dutch FA official lobs a massive rulebook at your head.
It should be noted that there is (technically) a route for teams to get promoted. They'd have to inform the KNVB of their desire to be promoted mid-season then go on to win the Tweede Divisie.
However, the KNVB froze promotions and relegations between the Ereste and Tweede Divisies for a mininum of 5 years in 2022.
@TheTamaJustice tbf, most of those teams don't want to get promoted, because of the financial requirements and change of fixture dates.

I can think of several others who are way more boring here in the Netherlands.. Top Oss, Telstar, Helmond Sport, Ado (the fans are crazy, the team itself it boring as hell). Eindhoven are actually pretty consistent and even doing extremely well this season

I was thinking about how Rochdale spent so many years in the fourth tier that it become derisively known as "the Rochdale Division", but FC Eindhoven have even them beat (47 consecutive seasons when Rochdale only managed 36)

I decided to follow Dutch football with Feyenoord. So, obviously, it's great to hear such story.
As for the "period win", I kinda figured out what it is because there's the same thing in Argentina but for relegation. Very weird and a great way to prevent big teams from being relegated. Which didn't prevent teams like River Plate or Independiente to be relegated nonetheless.
