The thing that most people will have Schmeichel over van der Sar is his vocality. Big Pete is very domineering and loud in your face unlike Edwin who is much more reserved. Reserved doesn’t mean you are not as good it only means you might not be that well noticed. IMO I think both of them are equally great, even David de Gea was a very good goalkeeper for Man Utd as well and it’s such a shame that he left the club in that manner after giving 12 years of service to them.

I’m always telling people that Edwin Van der Sar is the best goalkeeper in the history of football. The way he was saving everything with ease, catching power shots and so on, on a complete class of his own. The way he kept Fulham in the Premier League all by himself, was astonishing
Exactly! He wasnt just better than Buffon, Cech, Casillas... He is the best ALL-TIME. He actually caught shots rather than twisting his body and pushing it out.
Van der Sar saving the last penalty in the 08 ucl final was not only saving ronaldo's miss but he saved his reputation and had a redemption, winning his second champions league title. Buffon has not won and juve has not won a european title since 96.
Back then, with Serie A playing style in the league, it's almost impossible for Serie A team to win UCL. Just watch 2005's Milan vs Juve video. If VAR existed back then, that match would end up with only half of the players remaining on the pitch. With the amount Gattuso brutal clashes and double feet tackles on that match, he didn't even get a single yellow card.
For me he's number 1 because he had it all. But 1 thing is mostly overshadowed and not many people know this but he used to play as a defender before he turned goalie. So he was probably the best keeper if you are talking about participating in the plays with his feet. He's just a legend!
I'm a Manchester United fan and I will always love Big Ed. If he were born in a generation without Buffon, or Casillas, on pre-injury Cech, he would have been called a generational talent. He still was imo, he just was in a generation richly blessed with stellar goalkeepers. He was a magnificent goalkeeper by every single metric, one of our best and I think it needs to be mentioned that the ATG defence United had at the time, with Vidic, Rio, Evra and late Gary/ Rafael made a huge contribution to VDS' success with us.
If you hear former defenders of man utd speak of him, they all mention his ability to direct the defense line from the back and his communication skills as one of his highest qualities, sad to not hear it mentioned here.
Yea agreed with you. The ex defenders also mentioned de gea was very quiet and wasn't good with commanding the defenders . To me Peter and VDS are the top GK for united.. not de gea, he is only a one trick pony . Also Peter and VDS era had to fight against many great strikers.
Back to that era when the only job of GK was shot stopping, Van Der Sar was already one of the best in receiving dangerous pass from teammates and ball handling, even better than most modern GK imo
As a Dutch Ajax fan i can say he was one of the best ever. But i think it's his looks or something like that he did not get the credit he deserved. At Ajax he was so solid and all clubs he defended as a goalie. His record in the premiere league says it all. And at that age is just unheard of.

The Flying Dutchman was the name Barça fans gave Johan Cruyff after his acrobatic goal against Atlético in 1973. Even today you can ask anybody in Spain who is "El Holandés volador" (The flying dutchman) and most will say Cruyff, it's funny how 3 different players get same nickname in 3 different eras.
I find it hard to imagine any football fan who isn’t aware of Edwin. He was an amazing goalie. I never understood why nobody went for him sooner after he left Juve for Fulham.
Van Der Sar inspired my whole personality in the pitch. His calm and composure are legendary. I'm a defender, but his demeanor has stuck with me to this day.
people really really underestimate the guy and his stats. his stats were off the charts. dude made his club win the god tier leaugue twice. way better than any modern goalkeeper. flexible, long, fast, calm, good distribution and 0 mistakes, yelling at defenders only when necessary but effective. cant think of a better goalkeeper. rio and vidic were good , but vd sar is god tier.
EvdS was so reliable it was a blessing having him in the goal. I remember starting to be interested in football in general and watching all of Netherlands interlands with him in goal. I think I didnt appreciate enough how good it was to have him as goalie as we havent had someone coming close to his reach, calmness and 1 on 1 ability.
I think one of the more insane moments was seeing him on the pitch at his childhood club playing a match like it was nothing at 45. Of course the quality of that game wasn’t all too high, but damn, he seemed fit and focused as ever. And also, the amount of communication on the field coming from him was very great to hear up close. He was my childhood hero, what a goalie.
He was my favorite at Ajax when they won in 94, I would watch every match I could of that team. Might make a good video. They had at least half the Dutch national team playing there.
Van der Sar, as far as I am concerned, is a god-tier goalie, right next to Buffon. You would absolutely want to have him in the goal, no matter who you are up against and whatever the circumstances are
I remember van der Sar consecutively defending free kicks from Sinisa Mihajlovic, arguably the best free-kicker of all times, even better then Kaka or Roberto Carlos. He was one of the handful few that could defend them but the only one in the world that could do it on a regular basis. A beast.
It was around the times of France 98' when i really started paying attention to Footballl. And Van der Saar, was without a doubt, one of the firsts to call my attention (And we are talking about a World Cup full of legends). He was, is and will always be a LEGEND. Cheers from Uruguay! Nice video.
I remembered his name in the mid 90’s and would regularly put him and all the young footballers back then into my ‘dream team’ in Winning Eleven. Van Der Sar was already making a name for himself as this video showed he was tall, young and was world class goalkeeper. Van Der Sar’s Ajax had all the best players who would become legends in Europe later on in their careers after winning the Dutch league such as Clarence Seedorf, Edgar Davids, Patrick Kluivert, Marc Overmars etc. Only thing I didn’t know that he joined Man Utd at 35 I thought he joined around his late 20’s
And people say "muh buffon". The guy had best defenses in front of him his entire career, both club and country. This guy was at the shooting range ALONE almost and he stepped up hard core
I don't know what it was like in the world, but in the US, this man was outshined by all the big names on the team. I always thought he deserved way more love. Like I said, I am American, so I don't know if he ever got the love he deserved. I just know that here, everyone knew about Man U, and Ronaldo and Rooney, but no one ever mentioned VDS.
I think all Dutch ppl at the end of his juve time and during his time at Fulham thought: why isn't he at one of the biggest clubs in the world. He was insane already at Ajax around 24. He was incredibly good, up there with the top 5 of all time.
A lot of people here mentioning his ability to direct his defence. I think it might be the same thing that made him such a successful technical director at ajax after he retired from playing.
One of the greatests of all time. A man I looked up to my entire life (even literally as he is HUGE), but In my opinion one of the best goalkeepers ever.
Somewhat underrated, and only briefly mentioned, is that Van der Sar was, especially for the time he started playing, exceptionally good at coming out of his goal. He wouldn't just wait in the box (the zone around the goal the goalie can use their hands?) like many others, he'd go out there and kick away the ball when he judged it to be the better option. He could also play ball enough that defenders could reliably pass the ball back to him, confident he wouldn't make a blunder (or he'd be far enough off to the side that even the worst blunder would only result in a corner kick). He also had enough awareness of his team to make, as you do say, accurate passes towards the midfield or, in some cases, directly to attackers.
I'm not a football guy at all, but when I was little I wanted a Van de Sar shirt because I thought he was such a badass. Standing alone in the goal stopping EVERYTHING.
every dutchmen knows Van der Sar, if you're not a fan of Ajax, then for sure for his performance on the international stage, where he was just a beast and on his own kept us in the game so many times, when he did eventually retire we really felt it, since the less experienced GK took his place and goals started to go in way more often.
Great video! But you missed some footage, like when you talk about his passing (his pass on bergkamp in euro 96 against Switzerland) Or his moment with Ortega in 98 ! Or were there copyright?? And I do believe he was a starter the moment he came in after that Auxerre game with that volleybal goal from Menzo. Also a great goalie btw! But great video man!
We sorely missed Schmeichel when he left and we didn’t find a worthy replacement until Edwin Van Der Sar signed. He was a brick wall. That whole defence was immense, they summed up the statement “attack wins matches, defence wins titles.” If anything got past Rio and Vidic, Van Der Sar kept it out. I wonder sometimes how that 07/08 team would fare against the top sides of the last few years.
Vad Der Sar is probably my favorite GK of all time. He just always seemed laid back, regardless of the occasion. He was a modern type of GK who was comfortable in possession and distribution, but also good at the other stuff. Unlike many GKs of his era, VDS could easily be able to play within any current top team. I always had a sneak feeling (or hope) he would become Schmeichels eventual replacement.
Very surprised to hear that Van der Sar was forgotten this much, he is seen as the best goalkeeper we ever had in the Netherlands (next to Van Breukelen)
Van der Sar said that it was Ruud van Nistelrooy who recommended him to Sir Alex. The idea was that VDS, as the Dutch #1, even at 35, still was quality, and had maybe a good year or two left. He had six very good years left.
My little brother is a goalkeeper and he used to play for Ajax and he won the van der Sar best youth goalkeeper price. Sadly after that the injuries got him.😔
Most underrated goalkeeper ever. Don't understand why he is never mentioned in the goat debate when it comes to goalkeepers. He was just as good as guys like Buffon and Casillas and played untill he was 40.
THIS MAN WAS A LEGEND AND HE WAS MY SECOND BEHIND PETER SCHMEICHEL'S. BUT VAN DE SAR WAS A LEGEND IN MY EYES AND UNDER RATED FOR SURE. THAT IS THE THING WITH US GOAL KEEPERS, WE GET SO MUCH BETTER WITH AGE AND I DID WIN A NATIONAL CHAMP. BACK IN 2008 WITH RED BULL OVER 30' TEAM. I DON'T KNOW IF THAT LEAGUE IS AROUND ANYMORE OR NOT, BUT I LOVE SOCCER AND IT IS STILL GROWING IN THE USA.
Another great story about Edwin van der Sar is how he once brought his former club Ajax Amsterdam back a long lost trophy. In 1962, Ajax won it's first European prize by winning the Intertoto cup which was the pre-decessor to the UEFA Cup. They even beat their arch nemesis Feyenoord Rotterdam in the final. But years later, the trophy they won somehow got lost and of course nobody was responsible. Cue forward years later to the year 2000 when Van de Sar was the keeper at Fulham. Walking down Portobello Road in London, Sar spotted a statue of a goalkeeper picking out a ball high in the air standing in a shopwindow. He liked the statue and bought it for some 300 pounds. Back home investigating the trophy he finds out it was actually the Intertoto trophy Ajax had lost decades earlier. Nobody knows how it made it's way to a shop in London, but Van der Sar immediately send the original back to Ajax and had a replica made for himself. When he signed on in a management position at Ajax, he kept the replica on display in his office.
He was the goaly when I first started watching, I don't remember which European championship it was. Him and Edgar Davids were my favourites by far, was sad when they eventually quit. They never found another Van der Sar despite our people being as tall as we are.
As a newcomer, I need in depth stories like this. I want to know about the battles, seasons, players. Gimme a title I can search for describing this to maybe?

Van Der Sar’s Ajax had all the best players who would become legends in Europe later on in their careers after winning the Dutch league such as Clarence Seedorf, Edgar Davids, Patrick Kluivert, Marc Overmars etc. Only thing I didn’t know that he joined Man Utd at 35 I thought he joined around his late 20’s
Van Der Sar is the most respectable goalkeeper I've ever seen. Always calm and responsible
VDS was playing during a time of peak Premier League talent, as well as when true strikers existed, which made his performances even better.👍
And people say "muh buffon". The guy had best defenses in front of him his entire career, both club and country.
This guy was at the shooting range ALONE almost and he stepped up hard core
Crazy how he won the UCL went to smaller clubs because he was older then went to United and won it again
I met Petr cech when he was at Chelsea he’s a really nice humble dude
Do julio cesar and handanovic. These 2 are so underrated
best keeper we ever had at Ajax and the Dutch national team...at Fullham he was amazing too, made sense to me that Man Utd signed him.
As someone who grew up in the 90s I will always remember him as the keeper of that legendary Ajax team.
As a United fan he is my favorite goalie, he was so good man.
My favorite Man Utd goal keeper despite not watching him so much
What a beast!! Awesome video! ❤❤❤❤
every dutchmen knows Van der Sar, if you're not a fan of Ajax, then for sure for his performance on the international stage, where he was just a beast and on his own kept us in the game so many times, when he did eventually retire we really felt it, since the less experienced GK took his place and goals started to go in way more often.
Umbro Goalie kits were so fire
I grew up with van der Sar being old but still playing professional, he's always had unanimous Respect from everyone.
that man make love the goalkeeper postion, the name is unforgettable to the fan of 2000 Era, United Wall of Defense is immaculate.
Remember watching the matches with him in the world cup 2006 as a kid. He was so memorable.
Edwin van der Sar is a football legend🙌🏼
Van Der Sar, the best goalkeeper ever!
He’s the guy that got me into goalkeeping.
I was expecting an unknown goalkeeper, but then I saw it was Van der Sar... everything makes sense now
I love your videos so much. Thank you!
Sadly after that the injuries got him.😔
Its about time someone made a video about this dude
He was the best to watch. Complete panic around him and him cool as a Cucumber
Guy was a monster. Didn't matter what happened you never felt they were going to score. Every shot was almost like. "Eh Edwin is gonna save it anyway"
My favourite goalkeeper of all time! then de Gea! Both were beasts with awesome reflexes!
Most underrated goalkeeper ever. Don't understand why he is never mentioned in the goat debate when it comes to goalkeepers. He was just as good as guys like Buffon and Casillas and played untill he was 40.
Great video, yes the guy is a legend. Well done to Fulham for bringing him to England. I don't know where to rate him, but he was just brilliant.
When he went to Fulham I was shocked, I was very surprised that none of the big clubs had picked him up from juventus!!
Edwin van de Sar is legend never will he go old ❤
THIS MAN WAS A LEGEND AND HE WAS MY SECOND BEHIND PETER SCHMEICHEL'S. I DON'T KNOW IF THAT LEAGUE IS AROUND ANYMORE OR NOT, BUT I LOVE SOCCER AND IT IS STILL GROWING IN THE USA.
van Der Sar was the prototype for the modern day ballplaying goalkeeper.
Neuer was that, not VDS.
@@joecrypto2459 Neuer came AFTER VdS, you understand what a prototype is?
Edwin was my idol when i was a kid and still he is my idol, but he will always be! Also he is in my eyes the best ever 🙏🏻
He was a hero for me as a kid being a united fan who played in goal
Edwin van der Sar was so damn good. I really love his time in Manchester United
edwin was my childhood hero. easily the best in the world at the time, and only got better as he got older.
bros so goated that even being 101 he stops 110 r9 powershots and finnes 💪
Some goalkeeper, it's hard to define the best but nobody was better than this guy on his day.
Thank you for this video. To me he was and is the best goalkeeper ever. I have no doubt about that.
Loved watching Van der Sar
