Headhunters💀& Headdresses in Borneo | East Malaysia’s Mysterious & Beautiful Heritage 🇲🇾 [SE E29]

- Ever since I was a child, I was enchanted by the enigmatic stories my father told about his travels to his Iban friend’s village deep in the jungles of East Malaysia. That was in the 1970’s, quite a while back, and so I figured that the East Malaysia that I was about to experience had probably lost touch with its legendary past.
But on our very first day exploring East Malaysia, Tim and I were about to have an unforgettable experience with the indigenous people of Borneo. And we were about to uncover some of the secrets hidden behind the veil of thick jungle mists, and delve into the thriving cultures that call this incredible island home.

Watching this brings tears to my eyes. Born and bred a Dayak, had that realisation that we have always celebrated each other despite diff amongst smaller ethnic tribes. Thanks for celebrating & appreciating our culture with us ♥️
We have never felt as welcomed and accepted as we have in Sarawak and Sabah. Everyone is so kind, friendly, and bring joy into our lives!
It is such an incredible part of the world.
I love Kuching Sarawak even this is not my hometown. I from Penang but this is the places i stayed over 7 years now. Love it Borneo Sabah & Sarawak. Enjoy your stay here
We have loved every day in Kuching! We have met so many wonderful people, and have made new life-long friendships! We are so thankful that we got to experience such a beautiful part of the world!
Oh my gosh! I enjoyed the man in your video at the start with a huge smile on his face. This was a beautiful moment! You truly captured the essence of the ceremony’s of their culture… young and up in ages.. amazing how the talents of instruments and clothing were made. We in the US should really take note how creativity is so meaningful, enjoyed and captured within the cultures. Stay safe and hugs to the both of you!
Thank you so much and HAPPY THANKSGIVING! There is a lot to be thankful for this year, and we count our blessings every day!
Sounds like Marisa got her sense of adventure from her father which is very cool. Sounds like a very cool dude. Another great video from you two.
It has been fun listening to their phone conversations about his travels through Borneo back in the 70's compared to our experiences now. Things have definitely changed! Borneo is a wonderful island that is full of amazing culture, nature, and great motorcycle riding!
The cart at the border was a blessing! 27 countries - Woot! Headhunters - What a great suspenseful opening. Such a wonderful greeting when you arrived. Lovely people. It so amazing to experience the culture of the local people. Such fun being Ironman - Lol. You captured the museum and the mall experience beautifully. Nothing more scary than Tim with a boogy!! Lol. No surprise that the stories of the indigenous people are exaggerated. What a special experience!
Our time in Kuching has been incredibly special to us. We will not soon forget the people's kindness and the new friendships made!
Happy Turkey Day you two!
Thanks for showing us the history and traditions.
27 countries! Marvelous.
It has been an amazing ride so far! We can't wait to share what we have been up to in Borneo!
Thanks for being awesome!
Proud to be sarawakian ❤
It is an amazing State and we loved our time there!
This was the most interesting episode! Fascinating. Thanx you two. Love your travels
Thank you so much! We are so glad that you enjoyed it!
The people here are so wonderful and there is so much more to explore here on Borneo!
The algorithm sent me back to the beginning after the latest Brunei bridge video. It made me appreciate now the full circle to know Marissa's dad had ties to the land from his experience. The mall dance event was just mesmerising and rich.
We are loving this part of the world from the day we landed in Jakarta, to our ferry ride to Kalimantan, and entering into Borneo!
Thanks for tuning in!
I am really enjoy your great adventures rides from Indonesia to east Malaysia.
Firstly, the very nice song you both sangs, that's inspired me.
It is surely a beautiful theme song that's goes with greater adventures tune n explore the world with big bikes.
Secondly, no doubts, abouts sabah n sarawak cultures that's you have shown us, story telling on their history during the British colony.
It was a good info.
Thirdly, with all the good sense of humor and laughter.
In science facts, laughing is a good medicine for health.
Have a good day n safe journey to Tim & Marisa, a happy couple.
Thank you so much for riding along with us and for all of the kind comments!!!
We are so glad that you are enjoying the ride and and are glad to have you along for the journey!
I love Kuching! I always go to Kuching during the Gawai Dayak celebration because most of my relatives live there. Im also Iban and I appreciate that you guys visited Kuching, that city definitely has a lot of surprises. Also, theres a big cat statue in Kuching plus a cat museum there :3
We loved every day that we spent in Kuching! It is such a wonderful city!!!

It has been our favorite part of our SE Asian adventure!

Be Well, Ride Safe and Happy Trails from Texas 🏍🤠
You are too kind! Thank you so much for the wonderful words and support! That means the world to us!
Sounds like your dad had a great adventure in sarawak like the late Anthony bourdain when he visited his old friends in the jungle of sarawak.
This is such a magical parr of the world!
Amazing Tim and Marisa, can't wait to see dorco 2 lol
We wont curse the bike with that name! 🤣
You have alot of fun together just wondering if you guys wanted any children😂😂🤣😂😂
😂 I have enough bad dad jokes and poor puns to raise a thousand embarrassed children!
Nice video
Thank you so much! We are so thankful to have you along for the ride!
This video is the best travelling brochure
It has been an incredible experience so far! We are loving every single day!

Yup. These are celebration....
Not these juz for tourists.
And u r so lucky to encounter them quite randomly.
I grew up in Sarawak in these moods.
My classmates prrform those dance during Gawai.
Ur upbringing gives you are perspective that demobstrate "cultural competency" much appreciated.
We had such an incredible experience in Sarawak and are so thankful to have encountered so many wonderful cultural traditions!
Roti Canai Malaysia the one that you eat is the No 1 best bread in the World in 2023.....Kuching City is totally different from Kalimantan. Sarawak have free highway from Telok Melano to Miri....most Sarawakian can speak English easy for you to communicate
We are absolutely loving our time here. The food and the people are absolutely wonderful!
Welcome to Sarawak. Hello from Miri.
Thank you! 😃
Hey guys, I live in Kuala Lumpur, so if you guys plan to have a stopover in KL, do not hesitate to let me know, I can show you around and take you to the best places in KL.
Absolutely! Please shoot us an email at timnotier@gmail.com We would love to trade contact info! We should be in KL for a while as we hunt down the best bike for the rest of our travels!
Thank you so much for tuning in and for reaching out!
Bring them to the surrounding nature. Example kanching waterfalls or templer's park or even to genting Highlands(biking there should be awesome).
How cool was this. What a stark difference between your description of the Floating Islands in Peru. Here, "They performed for each other!" Each Ethnic group shows their Sunday best for each other. Perfect. I'm looking forward to hearing about some of Marisa's father's travels. Cheers, and Ride on!
I thought floating islands on grass are in bolivia. Correct me if I am wrong and my ignorant.
Not at all wrong or ignorant. They are in Lake Titicaca which straddles the border between the two countries. I really don't know if they are in both countries or not. Probably. In their book, Tim described their visit as the last thing they did in Peru and it wasn't a good experience. Like a bad taxi ride in Bangkok...taking you to fake tourist spots. @@keangwooichoo6138
👍
Great Vid. But Tim’s “de-pic-tion” of the boogey man and the bat cave just wasn’t required. 🤣🤣🤣. Awesome.
🤣 It took me a second... but then I snorted 🤣 You win the comment section!
Thanks for the laugh!
Proud to be Sarawakian n from the ethnic of Land Dayak ,mother 's side 👍😁🤗
That is a wonderful heritage!
Happy Thanksgiving.
Happy Thanksgiving! We had such a wonderful day!
I have many friends from iban, kadazan etc in Police force.. and they are All fearsome in a good way. but they also the most gentle and kind friend... maybe it in their culture's... when they co sider ypu as their friend.. they will be the best friend.. but if they consider you as their enemies... then you are in a big trouble...
I’m glad we made many friends, not enemies!
Everyone was so kindhearted and friendly!
During the battle with Japan and the Communists, the Sarawak locals were frequently used as combat commandos by the British government, and there are many remarkable stories of heroes among them.
Absolutely! There is so much interesting history about Sarawak, Sabah, and all of East Malaysia!
Welcome to malaysia ❤
We are loving every moment in this beautiful part of the world!
Welcome to sarawak and malaysia
It is such a beautiful part of the world! We are so excited to explore as much as we can!
@@2UpAndOverloaded mulu national park unesco world heritage site. Semenggoh orangutan sanctuary, bako national park.
First, thanks for a mid-week video!!
What a pleasant gift.
I consider myself somewhat intelligent, despite what Tiger Barb will say, but I didn’t know that the north part of Borneo was actually East Malaysia! 🧭 Or that Sarawak was the western side of East Malaysia! 🧭
I really appreciated the spectacular display at the mall!
Happy Sarawak day and have a great Thanksgiving.
Bye for now, from South East Grey County in mid- Western Ontario.
Happy Thanksgiving 🦃!
We hope that you have a wonderful day!!!
@2UpAndOverloaded Thanks.
In Canada, our Thanksgiving is on the first Monday of October, and I had a great weekend.
Today is just Thursday for us. Lol.
But Happy Thanksgiving to you!
Super.. great entertainment
Super history lesson too.. well done on research..
AHH..no surprise there.. British twisting the truth and trying to control..that coming from a Scot / Brit..😢
Good to see Tim getting his sense of humour in..with his bogey man interpretation. 😅
Take care.. enjoy your travels
😂Glad you find our adventures entertaining! It has been an incredible journey so far!

Yes, I agree with Tim and Marisa, Buy Tim's (Marisa edited :-) ) books. They are great. I followed along each chapter with Google images of the towns and sights. What I found different from the Videos, the books show you all of the adventure. The highs, the lows, the people, and the shared experiences they had with fellow travelers. They, the books, are insights into a world that only a few choose to live in. Experiences, like the ones Tim and Marisa have had, are a choice in life one makes. Most won't let go of the home anchor, as I call it. The safety of being around old friends, parents, co-workers, etc. The exchange for that lifestyle of the unknown, the what's on the other side of that hill or that corner is what draws travelers away from the norm. Their books show that side of a life that, once chosen, is one you long for forever. As Tim said, they would make great stocking stuffers.
That just made our day! Thank you so much for such a beautiful summery!
Hi there... Brooke was not a "British" ruler. He might be a British by citizenship but he did not rule in behalf of the British. He was a private ruler.
15:13 Ah. You got a picture of Peter John Jaban. 😁 He was one of the local actors in Edge of The World (a movie about James Brooke).
We are having a wonderful time exploring this part of the world! It is amazing 🤩
@@2UpAndOverloaded, enjoy Sarawak (and Sabah once you’re there!).
Originally, the brunei sultanate owned most part of borneo island. With the arrival of the british and also after the anglo dutch agreement (after napolean was defeated), it was divided into 3 countries.
Thanks for the information!
Planning on travelling across Western Malaysia in the future? 😁
We are indeed! We should be in KL in a month! We can’t wait!
@@2UpAndOverloaded Oh nice. I'm excited, can't wait. If you ever need a tour guide or anything in KL and I am free. Contact me 😁
Sarawak day was sept 16th ? Quite awhile ago.
It was indeed! We are a little behind in releasing our videos!
16 Sept is Malaysia Day.
22 July is Sarawak Day.
31 August is National Day.
Renting a high powered bike in malaysia could be a challenge. Most Malaysians drive cars. So we rent out low Cc motorbikes. As was the case with 2 youtubers in sabah north borneo
1. Paddy doyle - british
2. Activity enthusiasts - canadians
We are hoping to find a 400cc motorcycle in KL that will be able to take us around the rest of SE Asia! We need a little bit bigger of a motorcycle for both of us and all of our gear!
@@2UpAndOverloaded ktm is the best but bloody expensive. Perhaps a sponsor from BMW bikes?
To be honestly the real story of Chinese, malay, Indian, Jawa, Sunda, batak, minangkabau, bugis, madura, Pakistan and westerners they all immigrants come to Borneo island long long time ago told by my grad grad grad grandpa and grandma
👍🇲🇾
Read all three books in the order of 2,3,1. Highly recommended folks!
We can't thank you enough for the support and kind words! That means the absolute world to us!
Di indonesia ada juga yang asli masih dipedalaman kalimantan
It is a beautiful part of the world!
Syukur di Sarawak budaya masih asli, tidak terlalu dikreasikan.
12:46 We're are not British ruler and Sarawak was independent states from Brunei in 1841-1946
👍
Sarawak and Sabah is not a state but are actually one of the 3 Countries that formed Malaysia. Malaya, Sarawak and Sabah.
Hallo sorry, malaysia land of headhunter? 😂 the real last head hunting is in borneo indonesia part in not malaysia part. You can watch in youtube with keyword “tragedi sambas” or “tragedi perang sampit”.
True. If they want to get the true story, they may visit Kalimantan, Indonesia where the majority of Dayak tribes and the sub ethnics live because they believe forest is their home. It's an open secret tragedy.
@@andreastano7920 They explored the Indonesian part of Borneo just to see orangutans. And when they went to Malaysia, they exposed the Dayak people there. In fact, the majority of Bornean Dayak people are greater in Indonesia than in Malaysia. Even the biggest annual "Gawai Dayak Festival" event in Borneo(Indonesia) is where Dayak people from Malaysia come to Indonesia. They did not realize that their journey from Tanjung Puting to Pontianak and from Pontianak to the border of the country they passed through Dayak villages and met Dayak people. Funny 😂
Different between Malaysian Dayak and indon dayak..Malaysian Dayak is the real deal meanwhile indon dayak has been brainwashed and polluted by the pancasila
👍
There is a lot of history on both sides of the island! It is all incredibly beautiful!
Ausum guys, you cannot make it up, street dancing malasian hell's angels( with feathers and beaks on their heads not on a patch🙈🙊🙉) and truths about the 'boogieman' . Should you have problems with the 'boogieman' tho', just call John Wick 😉
🤣 It has been an incredible experience so far!
I have John Wick's phone # on speed dial! 😂
