4 Most Terrifying Encounters in Malaysia’s Underworld | Southeast Asia's Dark Side 🇲🇾 [SE E58]

- Malaysia may be amazing, but it also has a dark side.
We came face to face with that dark side when exploring Niah Caves in Sarawak, East Malaysia. The deep cavernous labyrinth that we explored is no ordinary cave system - these are huge pre-historic caves that are situated in the heart of one of the world’s most inhospitable jungles: the ancient rainforests of the island of Borneo.
And here in Niah Caves, the many remains of neolithic dead humans in this cave is fascinating. But the creatures we found that were very much alive… That all equated to one of our most terrifying experiences yet.

I was there 11 years ago. After crossing the river niah, from 10.30am and all the way into the cave and back, I go back to the main road by 3pm. As usual whole body cover with sweat and the cave dripping. Enjoy every minute of it.
We loved the entire experience! We took a long shower 😂 but we got the poop and smell off of ourselves!
That’s the thing about Niah caves, they are as real as they get. There are so many touristy well-lit caves in other places but the experience is just a whole new level. It caters for people with sense of adventures due to its massive explorative caverns, not for general tourists. I hope it stays that way.
When Marrissa said “I could walk this everyday in my life” I know that feeling. I hike and often have paths like that. You can’t describe how beautiful and peaceful that was to people. It’s happy and sad at the same time. Happy as you experience it and wanna bottled it but know deep down your place is not there and what’s left is beautiful memory. Glad you can share it with someone you love.
Thank you so much for the kind words! You are absolutely correct about how beautiful it is and we too hope it stays just as it is!
What an incredible experience!
Your content and editing is soooo good! It really feels like I am watching a weekly show on TV/Netflix.
Thank you so much! That means the absolute world to us!
We are so glad that we are able to share this part of the world with anyone willing to watch, and we are so thankful to have met so many wonderful people along the way!

Hey guys. What an awesome adventure. Once again those beautiful camera angles, that uncanny timing to catch that perfect camera and video shots and beautiful narratives just swept my feet off and BAMM.... landed into the caves with you. Those images of that wonderful “waterfall of light” mashed up with the creepiness of the dark and dank and creatures of the dark (ho, ho... behold the guardian snake!!”) all spiced up the exploration.
You two could have easily pass as photojournalist of the National Geographic or the History Channel for this amazing video production. I must say at one time I was worried that you guys might get lost or something in those caves. But I got lots of faith in you guys and knew with Tim’s “MacGyver” wits and skills managed to extricate your way out. And just like what Gandalf s said “Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines, it will shine out the clearer.” Once again, great stuff guys. Stay safe and peace
✌🤩
Hairs looking good Marisa, maybe bat head and shoulders is a new formula . Great video 👍🏻👍🏻
😂 thank you! We will reach out to Head and Shoulders 😂

Thank you 🙏! It has been absolutely wonderful!
Thanks for the experience thru ur lens...i lived 46 years in malaysia and never been to that part of Malaysia and might not be there ever...
Is it because u have insane thinking that we live on trees?😒
After retirement just take a flight to miri. 2 options mulu national park or niah
It is truly a magical part of the world to explore!
We are loving every minute and hope that you are enjoying the ride along with us!
Cheers!! Great work as usual
Thanks for always being awesome! 🍻
Dracula and his colony of bats will never look the same again eh? 🙂. The guano are collected and sold as fertiliser and very expensive they are too
😂 Dracula would have felt at home there!
Another great video, guys 👍
Thank you so much 😊! We are so glad that you are enjoying the show!
Loving this vlog

People said that if u found snake inside the cave , u probably have the luck , because it's rare and hard to see them! ( On your way back , it's disappeared ) . Your channel will gona grow ! Good luck guys !
I hope that is the case! We would love to be able to show off this incredible part of the world to as many people as we can!
Great video guys!
Thank you so much!! We are having the time of our lives and it means the world to us that you are enjoying the ride along with us!
@@2UpAndOverloaded I'm a fan, love your adventures. Keep it up😊

Terima Kasih!
Great video thank you.
Thank you so much 😎
Shivers down my spine.
It was such a beautiful experience!
Great sharing 😊
Thank you so much for tuning in!
WOW! What a most educational, yet scary time. I had goose bumps traveling through this with you. It was fascinating for sure. Thanks for sharing your every moment with us. Looking forward to your next video, “Until Next Time!” Stay safe and love you 2. ❤
Glad you enjoyed it! This was one of our favorites to live and to relive through the video process! We had such a wonderful time and can't wait to share what we are up to next!
Big hugs from Malaysia!
There's a grand hidden lesson underlying the overall experience, and that is the stark comparison between how much our respective governments trust their subjects to act responsibly.
Eye-opening, to say the least.
Thank you so much!! We are loving this part of the world, but miss our friends and family from back home!

My wife and I have done a bit of traveling and we enjoy it. When we're exploring and experiencing we're never ready to leave when that departure time creeps up. Sadness and even tear shedding (not me of course but she hehe) have been known to happen. Nevertheless, once we get home we're always glad to be here - there's noplace like home. Cheers!
I thought Marisa was going to go 🦇 Bat-tie 🦇for a second 😂🌺🧛♀️🌺
🤣 too funny!
Mantap 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Thank you! 😊
Amazing and daring of you.
Thank you kindly! We are having the time of our lives!
Gotta say… you both are A LOT braver than I am!!!
Ha! There was a lot of squeamish yelps of fear that I made Marisa cut out of the final video! 🤣 Thanks for tuning in!
Next explore Mulu Cave the largest clear water Cave in the World and Abraham Lincorn face
Wow! I will definitely look that up!
If u guys have your children in the future.. Both of u should take him/her along again to Niah Cave to give him/her same experience that both of u had, rather telling him/her your story title "The Tale of 2up and Overloaded in Niah Cave".. 😊
That would be spectacular!
We would love to bring our parents and family here to show them all just how wonderful this part of the world truly is!
Try go to Mount Api to see its popular limestone pinnacles at Mulu National Park nearby next time.
We will have to look into that! Sounds incredible!
🫡 Amazing! great video
Thank you! 👍 We are so glad that you enjoyed the episode!
It was like in a movie when you guys entered the Cave 😢
It was such an incredible experience! We loved every minute that we explored the caves!
I have been there five times and the fifth time I just asked for a visit certificate ...lol
I was there last december and did the entire loop. It rained the day before and i slid almost 50 to 60 meters in the dark on one section of the boardwalk. It was pitch dark and absolutely wet inside.
WOW 😳 I couldn't imagine trying to navigate the cave system with everything being slippery!
You guys are so brave to enter the dark cave. Well done
You are too kind! Thank you for tuning in!
Guys, if you can schedule a come back to Sabah explore Danum Valley (tallest tropical tree in the world 100.8M named Menara (meaning Tower) in Malay , Imbak Canyon & Maliau Basin (The lost World). They consider located in the heart of Sabah with distance between each other. They also required different routes to arrive. These are truly the oldest untouched tropical rainforest. Very limited mobile signal or no internet deep in the jungle. You may check from youtube or web for more details. I am sure you guys know Sabah better than most of the local because not many tour around the entire region as you did. Happy to see you guys plan to come back for the tour. Cheers.
Danum Valley looks absolutely incredible! We have marked it on our map!
We know that we will be returning to this part of the world for many years to come so we can't thank you enough for this gem of a destination!
I hate creepy crawlies. They gives me the heebie jeebies. Respect to you both for braving through it all. I would have done a U turn at the first insect encounter
🤣 Marisa hung in there like a champ! Neither of us were big fans of the cave snake!! If there wasn't an alternate route, I don't think we would have continued!
The b-Version of Mordor: Moredung! 😊 Crazy beautiful caves indeed! A place for rubber boots, though… 🤭
😁! Rubber boots and rubber gloves should be mandatory! 🤣
It was a stunning hike through beautiful scenery!
I think I'll sleep with the light on tonight 😨
🤣 I haven't slept with the lights off since!
Okay," so every time I watch one of your videos and hear you sing your song I get hung up on the part where Tim says, "We pack to much gear." It's a fun song but I am still amazed you can pack all you need on your bike and you both fit on it. I take pride in packing light but don't think I travel as light as the two of you. Peace from Connecticut. -Eric
🤣 half of our FB page posts are of people saying we have too much stuff! 🤣 We just roll with the punches and travel the way that makes us happy! We can't thank you enough for all of your positive feedback!
Tim and Marisa Notier
I guess those people have never learned that they could make gunpowder with that bat guano! That's high nitrate.
Now we know😂
That is why we never lit up the caves.
The local know. It is a conservation and protected area. It is only allowed for tourist visiting and for local villagers from nearby longhouses to collect birdnests. They are given special permit.
Maybe we need a safety glove when entering Niah Cave...so we be able to touch the bat poop railing...😂😂
🤣 that is a brilliant idea! You could make a living selling cheap gloves in the parking lot! 🤣
thanks for the image of the "shaft of heavenly rays". What an image and words to meditate on. I watched this while drinking my Sunday coffee and preparing for church. I am a Lutheran pastor and was praying on and thinking about my sermon as I watched this. Peace from Connecticut.-Eric
There have been many moments during our trip that have made us sit down and reflect on just how beautiful nature can be. It has left us speechless hundreds of times!
Thanks for all of the motivation and positivity!
@@2UpAndOverloaded As a Lutheran pastor I try to see God in everything and every place. Sometimes I am watching your videos and preparing a sermon. Who knows one of these days your video may be inspiration for one of my Sunday sermons. Peace from Connecticut.
@erich.4305 you are too kind brother.
A secluded and very interesting cave ❤ niah cave
It was absolutely amazing! I hope that you enjoyed the hike through it along with us!
Next, when arrive KL, try to visit Gua Tempurung..drive less than 3 hrs from KL.
This is marked on our map!! Looks awesome! Thank you!
The pride of peninsula people.
Y'all are hilarious 😂😂 thanks
You are too kind! Thank you for tuning in and laughing along with us (or at us! 🤣)
You will have so much experience when you came to the Philippines, and lots of views.
One day soon!
Ugh, bat guano caves. Now featuring snakes!
I would have wanted a full Hazmat suit, with bottled air to breath and an air conditioning backpack. Maybe a mule to ride on and elevators instead of ladders. Yeah, I think I will just watch your videos instead. Keep them coming!
🤣 A hazmat suit would have been a good idea!
Someone could make a fortune selling gloves out of a small pup up tent in front of the cave!
Not sure if you sold the CAVE adventure as part of your tour ?? A little pepermint under your nose, gloves, more lights and a gun to my head I might go (kidding). GREAT VIDEO !!!
🤣 The cave isn't in our Sabah tour package! 🤣 I still can't understand how there isn't an onsite helipad outside of the cave entrance for potential emergency rescues!
It was a wonderful experience, but we don't have enough waivers that would shield us from the potential liability of leading people into the gates of Hades!
u can also visit one of sabah's historical cave called gua madai, the amazing race reality show also went there for one of their locations,
That sounds incredible! I will definitely look that up and add it to our map!
I am beginning to think the name of the path really is “Slipper Path”.. 😅 it’s isn’t a mistake.
😂 absolutely! It had some hazards, but it was such an incredible experience!
Mulu national park - watch them fly out in the evening. Millions. I saw that Cambodia kampot has similar occurrence but too many street vendors and tourists there.
This was definitely not filled with tourists and we loved our time exploring the dark caverns by ourselves!
Such an epic adventure!
Install lights along the walk path, again lights on the painting wall at the paint cave would be helpful. make it one way through instead of walking back again. Lots of things needs improvement to attract more visitors, hope the state authority would invests more to make to cave exploration more friendly type. Glad that it doesn't disappointed you guys.
We really liked the fact that it wasn't all lit up. It brought us into the moment, the same as it would have been a thousand years ago! But we were thankful for the walkways!
Niah Caves was absolutely wonderful!
👍👍👍👍👍
Meeting a cave snake supposedly gives you good luck.
😂 that’s one weird lucky charm 😂
But we had a great time exploring the cave system! Such a fun experience!
No way
I love yr videos, but as a local I hate going into caves, course the stinking smell and condition is unbearable 😂.
We’re glad to have you along virtually! The caves are indeed stinky and dark, but they were so incredible!
Thank for riding along with us!
Bario also a good place to explore English spoken tribe in Sarawak
Absolutely!
after this tour of Malaysia what is next in your series of videos?
Back down through Kalimantan, Indonesia to Bali and off to Peninsular Malaysia and the rest of Southeast Asia!
the bats don't sleep during day time? umm let me guess, is it because you were there disturbing their sleep?
There were about a million bats flying around before we set foot in the cave 😂
No they just rest. I doubt they sleep.
its not an adventure if there was no danger or obsticale or something that pump out ur adrenaline right? enjoy it once of ur life time...😁😁😁😁 just try to be prepared for anything....theres always somebody else in Niah Cave watching u...why worried...and i dont think that snake is poisonous actually...its more like rat snake...the bite would be painfull though
We loved our stroll through the caves! It was definitely an adventure!
Thanks for all of the support and kind comments!
But..the soundtrack in Egypt...
👍
Waching this content make as myself doing a revisit trip which my first one in the 80’s. Noticed many upgraded facilities made.
Few more caves to the northern in Mulu, Dear Cave much bigger than this one and stinker too 🤨
Nice hairdo Marissa, are you not going to wear your helmet anymore?
u guys forget a beautiful island in sabah that have more poisonous snake than Niah lol
Wow! I am glad we didn't realize that until now! 🤣
be careful there... you'll probably seeing Batman lair in there
🤣 Absolutely!
🫵🏽🫡🫡
🤣 Thank you!
American archaeologist dont want to return the skeletons even after 30yrs. so 2023 Sarawak archaeologists need to fly to US to get it back 😂😂.
It looks like there is an ongoing research is a joint project between Sarawak Museum Department and the University of South Wales at the Niah Caves. The skull was found more than 60 years ago. I am having a hard time finding the resting location of Deep Skull, but it doesn't seem like it is in the United States.
