  • As we rode our KTM 250 Adventure motorcycle through East Malaysia, there was one thing that we kept seeing everywhere - palm oil. These recognizable tropical trees are grown everywhere here, and the fruits are sold for their versatile oil which is used in tons of products across the globe, including foods, cosmetics, and of course, oils. It is a whopping $7.5 billion USD industry for Malaysia, and it has brought a new source of wealth to the country. But it is also a very controversial industry because of all the rainforest deforestation that it has caused.
So much jungle habitat has been lost due to palm oil farming, that now endemic wildlife such as orangutans and pygmy elephants are struggling to survive. That’s heartbreaking to hear, but at the same time, it’s so easy just to say, “Palm oil is bad.” And it’s another thing to actually travel throughout the country of Malaysia and hear first-hand what the reality of the industry is.
And what we learned while we explored palm oil plantations was truly surprising.

The thing that pisses me off the most with the European Union (EU) is that they say that Malaysia & Indonesia have been chopping trees, causing deforestation due to palm oil & blah3. But at the same time Malaysia & Indonesia has far bigger forest area compared to the EU. Before u go on preaching about deforestation to other people, take a long hard look in the mirror. We should be preaching about deforestation to them not the other way around. And as mentioned in the video, palm oil plantation causes far less deforestation compared to other types of crops. If Europe stops importing palm oil today and Europe used its locally produced vegetable oils the entire forest area of the EU will be completely wiped out. So what are u going to do then? Not using any cooking oil at all? These environmentalists usually push for policies that end up causing even more environmental damage. Yes, Palm Oil isn't perfect but Palm Oil is the best choice we have by far right now. At the end of the day u cant have everything.

I was raised in a family of ten in a remote location, and my late father worked as a palm oil settler. If it wasn't for the palm oil, I doubt any of us would have considered studying overseas or even attending school in the first place. I can confidently state that thanks to palm oil, all of us can now live in a conducive atmosphere, pursue a tertiary education or even higher ranks, and some of us got the opportunity serving back our locality. Alhamdulillah.

Our family palm oil plantation is in Sabah. We are reqd to adhere to the RSPO requirement annually, planters are fined heavily for any burning in their plantation.Cattles, goats and chicken roam freely amongst the palm trees in many plantation. We plant vegetables and fruits along the dirt roads to fully maximise land usage… source of fresh food for the workers. Snakes, monkeys, insects, birds,pangolin,elephants.. we have it all on the plantation. We coexist, this is our backyard. The West have made the mistake of destroying their own backyard, we will not do the same. At the end of the day, its all about palm oil products being versatile and cheap and a threat to soya, sunflower, corn, canola oil etc. The environmental issues raised by the West are just a camouflage

Indeed.. I studied food chemistry during my bachelor's degree, palm oil rich in antioxidants and lots of benefits compared to vegetables oils by US Europe.. If people in the world find out palm oil is better than their vegetable oils, it will be impact on their economy. So the Europe making agenda to make palm oil look bad. Palm oil is very competitive 😊

This video has really stirred the pot. It was supposed to reflect the advantages and beauty of the palm oil industry to people who have solely a negative outlook on the industry.
But instead it has lead for people to choose a certain side without any budging that there may actually be any flaws at all.
Every big industry gouges for profits, needs to be regulated, and should have sustainability and keep wildlife habitats in mind. Anything less should be considered unacceptable from the "west" and the east.

The 'West' should not decide for the East. They should mind their own business and let the East do things their way. Besides, Malaysia practices sustainable methods which even the West doesn't do in their corn and soya fields. In the US, most of the negative news about palm oil is due to the fact that palm oil has 'killed off' the corn and soya industry. Nothing to do with nature but nature is used as a threat.

The deforestation situation is well controlled in Malaysia as they practice sustainable deforestation. The Western nations that preach Malaysia however have destroyed their forests during their industrial revolution and have now gone the sorry ways of preaching others when they are to be blamed in the first place. Peace from an American traveler.

@@2UpAndOverloaded Agreed. My point is, Malaysia is doing its utmost to conserve the creatures of the forest that we have lost in the US to deforestation. More forest is replanted in Malaysia then the one lost and almost all the endangered species of animals and plants are conserved in Malaysia via extensive programs. Many Americans travel all the way to Borneo to see these animals and plants in their natural state. Unlike in the US where the Grizzly's and other forest animals are quickly dwindling due to a poor conservation approach.

Hi Tim & Marisa. Glad to have you guys touring our country and especially going through the backyards of Malaysia. Enjoy your tour of our country.
RSPO is just a ‘scam’ by the west as they do not have a product that can compare or challenge Palm Oil. Thus the birth of RSPO to make some money themselves and regulate the growth of oil palm cultivation. Deforestation is just an EXCUSE used by the west. I’m in my 60s now but spent sometime in the Oil Palm Industry.
The company I worked with have Oil Palm estates in West & East Malaysia including Palm Oil milling. Even way before RSPO, cultivation of oil Palm is already sustainable. The economic life span of an oil palm is about 22-25 years and then it will be cleared and replanted with new and improved species with better Palm oil yield. Thus unlike what the west have been maliciously and falsely telling the world ( actually only the west ) Oil Palm cultivation is actually more efficient in land use compared to corn ( which you rightly said ).
If you care to study in more detail, oil palm is very sustainable and self reliant in that its own fruits ( Fresh Fruit Bunches ) & fronds are converted into fertilizers for its own cultivation. Even the Palm Oil Mill used its own by-products as fuel for its operations & producing methane gas for its workers to use as cooking gas.
Above is just a tip of the iceberg on the advantages of oil palm not to mention the many uses of its main product after milling i.e. Palm Oil.
Thanks for helping us to tell and show your viewers on the true picture regarding our golden crop ‘oil palm’ instead of the falsehood spread by the west.

Just a simple maths, which oil allows you to benefit from the sun without triggering inflammation? It's no secret the sun is the bringer of the light, the food for your mitochondria, the guide for your circadian rhythm. If your mitochondrial health is fcked, so does everything else. To say palm oil has "many positive" is way to underrate the importance of eating things that would not inflame your body as the sun tries to nourish it. And i don't say this lightly; im speaking as someone who used to suffer from severe eczema (along with other known eczema comorbids, be it mentally or physically) but managed to keep it to a non-existent level thanks to the sun + local diet (which involves palm oil).

If you clear the jungle and let the land bare then it’s bad but if you plant it with vegetables or fruit tress or oil palm trees etc then you’re contributing food source to the whole world and we needed income from our plantation too. Many western countries including US complains not because deforestation but our product gives their products some competition. Btw US already got tariff and taxes on our products and even import quota. Be fair as we need to survive too.

In my opinion, the total area of land planted with palm oil is small compared to the area of the country's forests. The number of forests in this country is still large compared to forests in western countries. If the survival of wild animals is so important then the western countries are the first to do it not us. We need to improve the quality of life of the people and become a developed country like western countries as well. Therefore, development and deforestation are forced to be done as little as possible unless the countries help and give us money so that we don't have to cut down the forests for commercial and economic use.

I love the fact that you guys really paying attentions to your adience and taking your time to reply comments. If you notice the tropical rainforest in Malaysia mainly having 3 type of vegetations & trees covering the land according to the height of the land. You may see the vegetations starting from low vegetations to super tall gingatic trees the higher it goes. So, basically the Palm Oil Trees only suite the lower ground soil which is also covered by short trees.. As Malaysia having hilly landscape its almost impossible for the high percentage of land will risking the whole jungle / forest to be destroyed by the Palm oil plantations industries. The plant lifespand also very very long for each trees more than 10yrs, therefore its very productive comparing to other source of cooking oil plants which is need to re planted in a very short times if not every harvesting seasons. Used cooking oil from palm oil also can be recycle for biodiesel industries, any one can sell their used cooking oil at ram1.50 - rm2.40 per kgs/litre to the cooking oil collecting centre of biodiesel industries. Its reducing the pollution from waste disposal and re used for better purpose too. ☺

Malaysia STILL retains MORE than 50% of its VIRGIN FOREST.
RSPO is double edge sword, as majority of the plantation ore SMALL STAKES , ie tradisional family landplots . It is Hard for these families to comply with the soo called requirements. Are they supposed to pay some consultants ? .
RSPO only works for huge conglomerates, its soo wrong to enforce some refulation requirements of some countries thousand of miles away; whereby enforcing ot would kill thier income , in worst case hv to sell thier ancestrial land to Conglomerates.
Btw it is expensive to plant palm oil on VIRGIN FOREST, mostly are converted previous agricultral land of diffrent stuff. example previous Rubber plantation, 2nd/3rd tier forest which areas been cleared for logging.
Thank you for HIGHLIGHTING this issue. Its a dilema.. for us.
Deep down those anti Palm Oil issue is about COMMERCIAL COMPETITION. An OIL PRODUCT that can be produced all year around, grows on a tree, hs better quality , wide range of usage and economicaly cheaper to purchase.

It nice for you comming to Kundasang, where you take the beautiful mt. Kinabalu. It is also my home town. Sabah has the vast and largest cover of oil palm, and previously was cocao. Landuse wise, we have learned from the first developed nation to reserved more then 50% of our land mass as permenant forest cover as National Park and Forest Reserve. There are ample info on the web how we manage our forest as a sustainable venture. Most logging are certified under FSC.

The history of Malaysian agricultural commercial crops needs to be taken into account before one delves in the issue of deforestation. Malaysia was the biggest producer of natural rubber at one time. We had cocoa and coconut plantations as well besides padi fields. All these crops had varying production costs. When Oil palm was introduced, it became clear it was the most profitable among the commercial crops, with it's low production costs. Soon, Malaysia replaced Ivory Coast as the world's largest producer of palm oil. Planters converted their existing rubber or cocoa platations into oil palm plantations. New lands were cleared for oil palm plantations. Deforestation became an issue when animal habitats were affected. The Malaysian Government has taken steps in ensuring the animals were protected by implementing regulations governing new plantations that adhere to the RSPO statutes.

Most of the negative stuff you hear from the EU and US are from lobbyists' work.
There is no other plant on this earth right now that has the yield per sq acre quite like the oil palm. There is no wastage with this crop. Post harvest, the fronds, the leaves, the bark - everything can be reused to produce energy or making other by-product. Then you compare that to soy, or corn, or canola. Day and night.
The only thing one should be concerned with is whether the plantation is sustainably managed and there is sufficient forest coverage across the country. Aside from that, lots of plantation has intercrop mechanisms and the soil is well maintained. The government too has taken steps to gazette forest reserves, which are non-negotiable.
So, we have reasons to believe that Malaysia and the world will stand to benefit from the way we do manage this crop.

I live in Asia since the late nineties (being European caucasian), been to Sabah numerous times (dive enthusiast), but I have seen the decay and terrible results of continuous deforestation, with the palm oil industry mostly being the culprit. Add to that the rampant corruption in Malaysia and Indonesia, lack of law enforcement and sheer indifference and you have a recipe for disaster. Only when it hurts (money talks), the Malaysian government acts. Malaysia is killing itself, not the EU.

You guys missed out on quite an important point about palm oil products, a lot of those that go into our food are hydrogenated palm oil. It's found in basically all our compound chocolates, dairy alternatives, creamers and pan greasers. We ingest it every day while it's illegal for any products to have a "palm oil free" label here in Malaysia. Nevertheless, palm oil is indeed much more productive per acre and has it's place in the global supply chains, just not in our stomachs.
In any case, thank you for showcasing our little corner of the world. Glad you enjoyed Mt. Kinabalu and hope to see you guys back again for more.

Err..in those countries no much jungle left to cut down..since they cut it long long time ago since hundreds of yrs ago. In mlysia..reserved forests n jungles availabe n intact are still very large..more than 70 %. We cut down greenery n replaced with greenery of palm n rubber etc. If you come n see it yourselves..it is better thn listening to dishonest lobbyists

Thank you for touching an important subject and also for seeing it in a neutral manner. Harvesting from nature will always have a negative impact when it’s done on an industrial scale be it palm oil, corn oil etc. However like what you mentioned palm oil is a very efficient way to use our lands. The industry not only feeds the hundreds of thousand families of the workers in Malaysia and Indonesia but the oil feeds the whole world. It’s also offers bio diesel that’s a renewable source of vehicle fuel. The difference is Palm oil industry do not have strong lobbying power with the western policy makers that’s why it’s demonized even when it can offer eco friendly solutions. This is not new however, do you know Malaysia used to be the world’s biggest producer of tin that’s used extensively in electronics and rubber. Instead of using rubber from tree saps the industry opted to use chemicals to produce synthetic rubber that’s more ecologically damaging. At the end of the day it’s about economic concerns, ecological issues while a real concern, are just used as a tool to suppress competitors. Thanks for a good content.

Indonesia have 11 million hectare of palm oil plantation or about 110.000km². A bit smaller than the size of java island or around the size of bulgaria. Yet indonesia producing the same ammount of vegetable oil as EU combined, that using land area the size of ukraine. Not only that, 1 hectare of indonesian palm oil plantation, every month absorbing carbon equal to 10 hectare of sunflower oil plantation in every planting to harvest season
So, who's more ecologicaly friendly. EU vegetable oil industry combined or indonesian palm oil industry alone
I believe malaysia also similiar to that

There's even an incident where a palm oil worker got eaten by big phyton while working. That's just explain how palm oil plantation does not cause deforestation as even a phyton live well enough, big enough, fed enough to even consume a human.

  • @AbdulKareemAbdulRahman
    @AbdulKareemAbdulRahman 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

The problem in malaysia is essentially the problem of neoliberal capitalism (small government, state support for private profit) ensures that local firms are unwilling to pay workers good salaries (maximising profits instead) , and instead large segments of society depend on the spillover effects of foreign funds purchasing our goods to fund people's pay (along with owner profits of course). This is distinct from another model where LOCAL consumption is enough to pay profits as well workers pay.
Hence Malaysia and other such 'commodities'-producing countries need to extract our resources to sell off overseas to people who can buy these goods and inject foreign funds to the local economy.
A workaround is to stop further deforestation as youd mentioned at about 18:00 and increase output from existing land.
But ultimately, without local investment and consumption, dependence on foreign funds to bolster the incomes of the ever increasing local population, will mean having to sell more, and so , the likely pressure towards extracting more (as producing more from the same area of land is likely more expensive).
Malaysia needs to increase and improve local consumption and investment and reduce our dependence on exports and FDIs if we're to stop the pressures towards further extraction of our environment.
