  • Toyota’s Gazoo Racing was key in making the Supra sport coupe’s return possible, but they weren’t done. They’ve now applied their skills to a totally mainstream nameplate- the compact Corolla. So let's see how far they could go with Toyota’s entry-level commuter. #ToyotaGRCorolla #Toyota #GazooRacing

    I so do not want to like this Corolla GR because of the 3 cylinder engine. But watching it perform on the track, and being able to adjust the power to the rear wheels - manually instead of a computer plus all wheel drive with a manual gearbox helps one overlook that 3 cylinder, especially since its making 300 HP. Actually, hear me out. The GR Corolla Circuit and Morizo Editions are... bargains. Yes, even at $50k. The reason I say this is because the production run for these is going to be very limited and these things will follow the GR Yaris into the world of instant collector cars. You buy one of these, take care of it and it will hold it's residual value better then 95% of the cars on offer today. People make arguments that the GR Corolla isn't as fast nor as cheap nor as luxury as some other cars and that argument holds true. But those people also miss the financial component of this car. It is a low-production unit coming from a major manufacturer that historically has produced some of the most sought after and collectible performance cars. A GR Corolla/Yaris is like gold and those that placed orders will likely find that this car is essentially free.

    It really is a shame that Toyota offers no intermediate performance version in between this and a Corolla XSE. This is nice; I’d never buy it. However I would buy something with a 6 speed, lsd, fwd, 200+ up for $28k to $30k. I know toyota doesn’t really like turbos as a long term solution, so it seems like a tuned version of the 2.5L from the Camry would work and a throwback to when sport compacts had tuned versions of family sedan engines. Missed opportunity.

      Agreed, I wish they'd bring back the XRS, especially with all the dealer markups on the GR. Would also be nice to be able to get a moonroof with a sedan version, which allegedly was rumored some time ago

    And why exactly did Ford say they thought it best to quit building fun and exciting cars? Building trucks only (except the Mustang)? Time for Ford and other car companies to take some notes on how to do it right like Toyota has with the Corolla GR. All I can say to Ford is: "You Big Dummy!" lol

    300 HP in that small car, I thought it would be faster..not that 0-60 in 5 seconds is slow by any means. Maybe a boost of electricity would quicken that a bit

    Decent but the price is why the the Focus RS and Evo hit the exit doors, even MW admit they not sure how long it will be for sale. I'd get a 2.7 CT4-V for that, a base v8 Mustang/Challenger/Camaro even Hyundai Ns for a little less.

    the interesting thing is that Toyota specifically adapted the Toyota GR Yaris into a Corolla body for the USDM and Canadian market. Honda on the other hand, gave the EU, Japan, and US the same FL5 Honda Civic Type R; but gave the USDM an extra manual only Acura Integra Type S to play with.

    Fair enough. Let me get this straight. A great review by Motorweek as always, but...such an amount of buck for a pimped Corolla? Maybe it's a lot of fun, but you could easily get something else for that price. Is Toyota afraid of releasing a new Celica?

    • @AndreLei1982
      @AndreLei1982 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Why would Toyota release a new Celica? There’s the GR86, the GR Corolla / GR Yaris (depends on the market) and the GR Supra in 4 and 6 cylinder options. I don’t know which full range auto maker offer more sports cars at the moment. As much as I’d love a new Celica (I own a 1990 one besides some other Toyotas) it would be either too close to the GR86 or too close to the GR Supra. There’s just no niche for a Celica at this point.
