BTW long pressing traction control after you put it into expert mode, until the sign disappears from the central screen is what completely disables traction control (not the ABS though). With that setup the ABS will interfere only in extremely excessive braking in track days, certainly not in snow braking
^ This. Expert mode does for the most part eliminate TSC and VSC interference except for in the case it thinks the car is starting to slide (not slip angle) significantly to help prevent a spin. If your going to intentionally be sliding the car you need to go beyond Expert mode for the full disable. So IE, snow, dirt, or trying to drift the car you'll need to go full off or else the car will pull power.
I mean, I 'get' it, they do this for a reason... but, seriously, the automakers need to start making the controls of these electronic aids much more straight forward. This is a pretty ridiculous number of hoops to jump through(and remember). Maybe, since everything has a digital dash now, they just blast a gigantic warning that you have to agree to when you want to completely disable everything, gotta be something better than the state of things right now lol.
@@ChristianRunsNY Blob-eye Impreza WRX from their driving school's fleet, iirc the suspension and some stuff we're prepped but the engine was stock for novice drivers
Regarding your observations that "50:50" appears to be more of a baseline than a hard rule... The car's AWD system is one of those where it's essentially FWD with a clutch connecting to the rear axle, which is overdriven / geared faster than the front, meaning 100% lockup actually creates RWD (sort of...more like RWD while the front tires are braking)- so your observation makes perfect sense. Why? Consider the two extremes the car can observe front/rear and how the "center" clutch behaves: - Front wheels on pavement, rear wheels on ice = in order to achieve 50:50 torque distribution, the car must nearly fully LOCK the clutch to the rear (because the front is guaranteed high grip and it needs to try to get the rear to match it) - Rear wheels on pavement, front wheels on ice = in order to achieve 50:50 torque distribution, the car must nearly fully UNlock the clutch to the rear (because the front is guaranteed low grip and it needs to try to get the rear to match it) (this is of course not how a true 50:50 center differential would behave) So, the GR Corolla/Yaris clutch transferring torque to the rear is *always* adjusting to achieve a given target (such as 50:50). I doubt that the system is so accurate and fast at achieving this to the degree that an experienced driver like yourself *wouldn't* notice some torque split changes; I believe you're noticing the car struggling to produce that 50:50 target consistently. I also suspect that the system won't even actually seek the target torque split if said target creates extremely low torque output (like in the scenario in the second bullet above, it probably doesn't actually unlock- instead I bet it prefers creating a more forward torque split in order to achieve more grip / overall torque output)- if this is true, then the actual torque split could vary wildly, guaranteeing you notice.
WHAT THE HECK!? Wyatt is back?? SMART move, Team O'Neil!! Wyatt is the reason I subscribed to your channel in the first place. He is indispensable and irreplaceable! Welcome back, Wyatt!! P.S. Bald guys for the win!!
Wyatt, my dude! Always a treat to see you pop up on my YT feed. I'd love to spend a day in a GR Corolla, they look like fun little go-karts. Perfect for QC weather.

Ordered one of these in Australia a week or so ago. Will be a long wait but from all the reviews I have seen it will be well worth it. Fantastic video!
Wyatt, so god to see you back behind the wheel, you do this car justice, buddy over in the UK, his neighbour has one and just loves it, says it is just fine as a daily and no issues either since he took delivery of it in his 3rd year now, he said the European version doesn't have the same ABS setup as the North American cars do, I guess its just our standards here are different from there, I live in Central Canada and figured we would sell lots here and haves tons of Toyota dealers in our city and when i went into a few dealers about getting one or even a chance to look at one, they said their allot was only going to be possibly 10 units a year total allocation of all models of GR Corollas for the province and if i factory ordered one it is up to a possible 2 year wait and subject to model year price increases which is understandable having spent a number of years in the vehicle industry myself, My local dealer told me he can get Supra's easier than a GR Corolla, we get severe winters in Manitoba and this would be the perfect car for my needs, nothing better than 3 pedals and this maybe better than a WRX or Maybe the running gear comes from one in some cases 👍
Beautiful driving. I’d love to see a WRX update with the new ‘22 model. I bought one this winter and it’s been super impressive in the snow and at the autocross course so far. It’s my 5th WRX/STI and the new 2.4L is a massive improvement over the last 2L FA engine and the 2.5L EJs I’ve owned.
Finally someone showing that it can drift around in the snow = fun as in the dry I haven't seen be able to hold a drift in the dry but I only care about siding around in the snow.
Can't wait to come by your guy's place someday! I live way in British Columbia of Canada, but I immensely hope to be there eventually, definitely on my bucket list!
When you push to get the EXPERT mode, keep the finger pushing the button. Itll make EXPERT dissapear but everything will still be disabled. That mode disables even more stuff, maybe ABS too.
Wyatt Knox - where have you been? Hopefully holding out for a better contract. Hopefully Tim realized what a mistake it was . Hey, it’s ok we all make them. It just hasn’t been the same without you in these videos. I am so glad you’re back!!!!
Way to go Wyatt! I like to Imagine that the Subaru Justy is smiling down from car heaven at the Corolla GR, since its got a similarly sized engine less turbo and modern tech.
If the modes in the Corolla are like the Yaris ones, expert mode has still stability assists. Try holting the stability off button for a few seconds. If expert mode isn't shown any more, but the stability warning lights are still on, all stability (except ABS) should be deactivated. I would love to hear, if this works on the corolla too, and if it rallyes better without.
The OEM AWD ECU absolutely has lots of inputs from various sources. Steering, angle, speed, tps, etc. I had the same sensation. The syvecs AWD controllers makes its a much more direct feeling and analogue experience. I expect it will be out in a few months.
