Toyota Corolla GR vs Subaru BRZ: Track Test

- Life is not fair - One Direction refuses to reform, we can’t find a Caramac bar for love nor money and the US gets a pile of cool cars we, in the UK, don’t. To prove the problem is real and requires drastic and immediate rectification, Jethro and Jack gathered a Toyota GR Corolla (that shares much of its running gear and underpinnings with the sublime GR Yaris) and a Subaru BRZ (that shares almost all its underpinnings with the sublime Toyota GR86) and took them to a racetrack in Arizona. The mission? To construct a watertight argument for why both cars should be brought to the UK. Immediately.

GR Corolla, GR Yaris, BRZ or GR86?
GRC or GRY anyday! Love my Circuit GRC!
Id like to see how a 2011 Subaru WRX STI Hatchback compares to these modern machines.
My answer is GR Rolla tho
@@tylers82why you picked the GR Corolla? I belive BRZ is as amazing and gorgeous as the Corolla.
@@KG_GRCme too picked all 3.
Brits crying they didn't get the GR Corolla... You got the GR Yaris.
I'm in US and would very much prefer a GR YARIS over the corolla
And a Corolla being cooler (nevermind faster, all the rest of it, no, Jethro said cooler) than a Civic is plainly science fiction 🤣
to be honest no one in the UK is bothered about the GR Corolla, clickbait BS.
Yeah, we also got the GR86 instead of the BRZ, it even says so in the description. I have no idea what they're on about
😂😂😂😂I’m too big to fit in a fucking Yaris🙄🙄🤦🏾🤷🏾♂️
Living in the land of Trucks and Suv's I am thankful that I had the option to pick up a GR Corolla Circuit Edition at MSRP and I love it.
GR Corolla Circuit Edition has 350bhp and special racing tyres on it.
@@purwantiallan5089 Neither of those things are true for even the Morizo edition... The Morizo comes with the same 300hp but an extra pound of boost to make a few extra lb-ft of torque. Michelin PS4 vs Cup 2s if you consider Cup 2s a specialty racing tire.
Same here 🤜🏽
Lucky! I’m looking into one right now. But hopefully I can afford one at the young age of 20 😭
What a strange world, the 4 door hatch has 2 seats and the 2 door coupe has 4 seats haha. Can't go wrong with two great choices, but BRZ is the easy winner here IMO. I've owned mine for nearly 2 years and have fed it a constant diet of canyon runs and track days. Love it even more than the s2000 which I've also tracked and done canyon days with. That's huge praise in my book as a former Honda guy.
Dont worry, we can't get a Morizo edition in the USA either
Seriously, hard enough to find Core or Circuit editions at MSRP, the Morizo edition for all practical purposes does not exist.
lmfao too true
I’ve known two Morizo owners. They were available you just had to be ready to pull the trigger. Extremely rare production car though that’s a fact.
I love my 2023 BRZ here in Oz. It is an amazing car and even driving to work is fun. It’s like being on a set of rails around roundabouts. For a sports car it’s cheap $53800 drive away with window tint, ceramic coat and floor mats, top of the range. In a sea of Hiluxs and Rangers it’s great to be different!❤️🐨
The GR Corolla is the only car I really want right now. We do need more cars like them, because special things are more and more rare, much more so if they're affordable.
I have one and it's easily my favorite car that I've ever owned.
They are not really affordable sadly. Dealer markups are insane if you can actually find one!
@@CapFlipGamingget on a msrp dealer list and wait a year or 2
@@Blballerboyor buy a used one with 1k miles for $42k

Subaru cannot be great without an STI.
As a GR Corolla Circuit Edition owner I can honestly say, it's amazing. I absolutely love mine.
And the EJ-engine's rumble. 😉
I just hope Subaru starts to listen to their fan base tbh.
Subaru are washed😂😂😂👎🏾
@@bezzyranx9839 kind of I guess. CEO resigned because he didn't like the direction where Subaru is heading so that must be an alarm but you know, I don't see any alternatives atm. Toyota is great but still doesn't feel the same.
I own the GR Corolla and I’ve never heard anyone communicate so well what it’s like behind the wheel of it. I am amazed at how well he hit the nail in the head on everything about the GRC.
Yes! More of Jethro, please
Great comparison! Huge props to Toyota for continuing to make such special performance (GR) vehicles for the standard joe like myself. I currently have a 22 GR86 6AT, and its my first rwd sports car, coming from fwd/awd cars and what a life changing experience to be able to learn this car. Its my primary car, and I have ran 2 track events with loads of fun, and learning. Looking forward to many more years of fun and experience with this car. Something about a Front engine, RWD, Lightweight coupe, near 50/50 weight dist. is very special. Personally I would like to see the new 8AT in the new GR Yaris make its way to the GR86/BRZ platform and maybe a little more power to replace both the 6AT and 6MT
The consensus on what makes these cars special is the fact they are offered as manuals. I’m confused as to why you would want an auto?
@@KN-jw7ts For me personally, I have major fear of mis-shifting. Just personal preference, and I dont mind less power and have the taller gearing. I know the 6AT version gets alot of hate, but its still a fun/usable rwd car compared to the AT Miata
Everything you’ve said about the auto version is valid, and I’m sure it’s a lot of fun to drive. If you took your experience and amplified every aspect, that’s the manual version. Imo as a fellow owner (manual), the fear of mis-shifting wouldn’t keep me from recommending you learning manual in this car. All that said, no hate at all, I hope you continue to enjoy the car👌🏽
Hmm, That’s a major part of the enjoyment, getting good at it, so u don’t “mis-shift”. Can I ask how old you are?
@@SuchFinessse Definitely! I bought an 07 Honda Fit just to learn manual and I totally get it. Who knew a car with 100hp and 2700lbs could be so fun? I cant imagine a manual triple the power lol. I 100% agree with you, the manual is very much more amplified and you are 100% in control. Appreciate your input and best of luck on your car as well!
The refreshed GR Yaris has the same power & torque, but would still have significantly less weight. Ok it's less practical, but would argue that most enthusiasts won't mind that.
Harry's Garage puts a BMW X5 rubber tray in the back of their GR Yaris and it will haul pretty much anything like a small delivery van.
I think it's too small for the American market - everyone here thinks they need a giant SUV or pickup truck because of that one time they had to bring a fridge home 8 years ago
Nice review! And excellent color choice for the BRZ ;)
I live in America. I want the Yaris GR, because of that 200kg, and too many doors on the Corolla.
Amen, preach Brother!
& the Corolla has a diff overheating problem.
Why? The Corolla is a bit small for my needs but I would love to have a GR SUV
@@hhasteheat wrapping the exhaust were the clutch pack is fixes it, 20 dollars right there
I want the yaris because the corolla looks ugly
Never in the history of motoring has a serious suggestion to add weight to a high performance road car been made
Nissan argued the GTR at 1600-1700kg was fine, because they would just add downforce to reach that figure for grip anyway. Certainly raised an eyebrow when they claimed that.

He never said that adding weight would make it faster. He said that adding weight might make it more playful, which might make sense if that added weight is distributed better. But in general lighter is always faster.
Good effort guys, I miss those three legends 😢
they're so boring... holy
How I wish Subaru was still making a WRX/STI hatchback like the 09-14 models 😢
Same here. This is why I still have my 14 WRX hatch and I will never ever get rid of it.

@@user-rl5lc5jy4l no Chris Harris 🤦

Dude I couldn’t even watch 3 min of this video. This is shit
Chris harris is legendary but jethro is really good
I Will stick to my Subaru Impreza GT turbo with 300 horses. Same fun as the Corolla and that started about 28 years ago
Why are they reposting so many videos??
Awesome review!
Great review guys. I met a gal here in Cape Coral, Florida that waited 2 years for her Morizo edition and that it is 1 of only 200! How ironic that it has 4 doors yet there are no rear seats, instead there's additional bracing and rear seat belts. There are only 2 colors available: white and matt pearl grey. The competition edition is less money and even that one is limited to only 1500 units. Too bad you don't get those seats in the competition edition or that cool steering wheel.
Media outlets need to stop reviewing the Morizo that nobody gets and is completely different from a normal GRC
The review is for the non peasants with a morizo.
Similarly, when Nissan released the new Z, they put all the journalists in the $52k Performance model to hoon around a race track in, while simultaneously touting how amazing this "$40,000" car was for the money. And they all seemed to fall into that trap, echoing Nissan's marketing/talking points.
@@weiyang88 ok sorry you must have a morizo then
Completely different? What the hell are u talking about.
Corolla has an overheating diff problem, the GR86/BRZ has a right-hand turn oil pressure loss problem.. both of which need to be fixed but the GR86/BRZ problem needs to be fixed first. That's an even more serious problem, causing engines to be blown, especially when Toyota is pushing track days with the sales of them. Crazy that a solution hasn't been introduced, yet. The WRX's FA24 doesn't have this issue.
Agree but the wrx engine is also unreliable.
Most reliable Toyota:
@@gigi9467the FA24 and FA20’s found in the wrx’s are pretty bulletproof. FA24 is good for 500wheel and FA20’s 450wheel on stock turbo with E85. That’s 4G63 levels of performance while also being more reliable
@@ps3alphagamer12 lol ok. Miata is always the answer for a true sport car those 4 door are the trans of the car world bro. Confused lol
The overheating diff is a nonissue for 99% of ppl that buy these cars, as they will rarely/never see a track. They’re are better options for track use out there, but as a street car……this grc is phenomenal. Couldn’t believe how good it is to drive.
GR Corolla is available in Australia in right hand drive, and the facelift or the GR Yaris has the further refined engine of the GR Corolla, plus the introduction of the auto option
The auto is better than it could have been - but no chance I would take it over the manual. The new interior is interesting however - hopefully they update the Corolla interior as well.
Great video
Both amazing cars, Toyota is killing it. Not sure what to get in the next year or two. GR86 or Toyota Land Cruiser
Considering only one of those is a Toyota I’d say Land Cruiser, the 86 is amazing driving car but it stinks tbh
@@jdmbren13do you mean it actually stinks? Like smells? You said it drives amazing and I think it's the best sports car bargain on the market. I hate the fake engine noise and that engine will never be special but the rest but what else is there not to like
@@jdmbren13 'It stinks' ... what? I've got the 23 BRZ at the moment and it's been great.
Gr Yaris and the corolla GR are BOTH about 210 bhp/tonne but the Yaris is about half the price so us in the UK got the better deal
I'm seriously tempted by the facelift GR Yaris when that's released here. If Toyota had given us the GR Corolla I would've already bought one. The regular Corolla is a decent looking car, and the body kit gives it a healthy dose of attitude on top.
I’m surprised how well the Corolla did bc it was much heavier and just had a bit more power out of a 3 cylinder that’s very impressive
I don't know if I would call 70 horsepower and 90 ft/lbs "just a tad more"
@@carlmeaux3518 that is a tad more for how much more it weighs
@@AdrianPortelli0fficial bro it only weights 3200lbs .-. The torque out of corners with awd basically negates that
@@johnbell5875 but the other car weighs 400 pounds less
@@AdrianPortelli0fficial you realize the brz is about 2850 lbs? the gap in weight isn't as big as you think. it's a 10% weight differnce vs. 25% hp (greater at elevation) and 30% torque difference. the 400 lbs is neglectable. rule of thumb thinking is that for every 100 lbs you are looking at about 6 hp equivilance. adding that to the brz, it's still 50 hp down and no where near the torque of the GRC. you usually have to spend a pretty penny on NA 4 cyclinder motors to get 50 more horspower out of them.... so yeah, it's a little more than a tad
great, but it's a pity that you didn't check the times of both😢
What's funny is in America I want the Yaris circuit edition. I'm not a fan of 4-door coups/hatchbacks.
i want to see more Jethro !
Any overheating issues?
On the track, the oil temps of the GR Corolla gets kinda hot, like 240-260F hot. They need to upgrade the system,
The coolant system however? Absolutely solid, no higher than 215F
To me, the corolla Gr is the blue collar Gt3.
Yeah that sounds better than poor mans gt3. Im not poor at all but I cant afford a 50k car😂
I'll take this comment as an owner 😂..
I missed the evo and sti days, this is the closest I can get to both of them, got lucky to finally experience it and enjoying most of it. I'm keeping it stock and making it last as long as I can

great piece with rix and jethro...would have been great if tom ford was in thi a well
Come join your brethren here in Australia, we get them all! :-)
You have a lot of nerve to complain. We don't get the GR Yaris in the US or Canada. You may not have a GR Corolla missing a back seat but we don't have a Corolla Touring Sports with or without a back seat.
More Jethro please
Does the BRZ have Limited Slip Diff?
Feel like we are spoilt in Oz for once we have GR Corolla, GR Yaris, GR86 and BRZ and all right hand drive.
These cars have big differences in price and aren't directly comparable by any metric.
In fact, the GR corollais bot easy to get in N.America at all. Its so hot in sale that ost dealers add a mark up to it and eventually not as affaordable as you said. And Morizo version? Well its as rare as urben legend. so think about it.
You get the GR Yaris. We get the GR Carolla. Very similar. The yaris is actually closer to the rally car than the Carolla.
Nice driving
You-tubers in the USA should’ve been doing this I feel a lot of enthusiast cars that never make it here would do very well. But are available in other countries.
This show is still on TV?
Yay Jethro!

I opened the video because it was Top Gear, I closed the video because it isnt Top Gear
What track is this?
Wow 😮. 😊. I’m with the COROLLA GR
What track is that?
I think the new corollas are really good looking cars
Stop leaning on the paint with jeans on that could have metal bits on the back.
The title was miss leading...
Honestly everyone deserves cool cars. But Britan is all worked up because they didnt get two car models. Mean while for the last 25 years, the u.s. was unable to have skylines, s15's, type r civics, all the cool jdm suv's, kei vans, etc. etc. We have missed out on so much. And this time we actually got a win.
Ha, good point. It's true we're very spoiled here with well engineered vehicle choice from around the world. It's like cuisine, our domestic stuff isn't incredible (apart from Fish n Chips, Sunday Roasts etc) but it means we have an electric choice of food from elsewhere
I’ve owned many WRX’s/STI’s and I’m convinced Subaru have now given up on us true driving fans BUT Toyota haven’t therefore PLEASE can we have the GR Corolla in the UK 🙏 🙏 🙏 🙏
Yes. Same boat as you as a subaru owner. Subaru has left us in the dust. They lost me completely when they got rid of the sti. Not to mention the ugly new wrx. Btw you guys have the gr yaris. Can we trade? I dislike the looks of the corolla.
You could try and pick up a GR Yaris over there
@@barsaf9989 Regardless on our opinion of the aesthetics of the WRX, it's still a good platform to build on for a tuner. The engine is more capable than the previous EJ257, it's just a shame the previous STi's 6 speed isn't offered with it. The transmission becomes the new weak point.
Toyota owns 20% of Subaru. They basically bullied Subaru and forced them to give up market share.
I think the GR Yaris that you guys have is cooler than the GR Corolla.
The winner is : Subaru BRZ ...
Until its its time to change the sparkplug.......
Driving Fwd on the 10/10ths limit is actually more challenging than awd to left foot brake weight transfer and actually most fwd rarely let go of the throttle in cornering and liftover oversteer cars rears with precision in turns that seasoned rwd and awd drivers struggle to replicate without tons of practice
Cool cars. I’d have a used Elise…
It's not really a big deal that we don't get either of these; the GR Corolla is just a fatter, heavier GR Yaris and the BRZ is a GR86 in all but name and smiley face. Still, as long as you're having fun...
GR cooler than type R ?
Haven’t I seen this video on here before?
JETHRO!!!!!!!! Let’s go!
why the repetition? have we not already seen this video?
God, finally, someone who doesn’t blindly sing AWD praises. You always know who’s just an entertainer vs a car enthusiast when they start talking about AWD.
Crazy thing is that in Mexico, both cars cost almost the same, close to 40 k USD. Good thing is that you can you still buy an MX5 for 28 k USD. What happen to you Subaru? something like 10 years ago, for the same amount of money you can buy an STI.
Grass is always greener? North America doesn't get any proper station wagons, so I'll never feel badly because the UK misses out on a limited run production sports car that is hardly even actually available here unless you are willing to spend over MSRP for the privilege of owning a sought after vehicle.
They can buy a Corolla wagon with or without a back seat.
GR Corolla, is an epic piece of machine!

Title: BRZ vs GR Corolla
Intro: this is not a comparison
oh, all those many, many, many feelies
Love Jethro!! Also, please be honest: how many laps did that diff last before it heat soaked and left you in FWD only? My money is on 1.
Y’all are ridiculous. This is blown out of proportion. Does it occur? Yes absolutely - however depending on your skill level and other factors - such as weather, tire wear, etc it is not that prevalent. I recently went to Arizona Motorsports park and did a total of 80 min on track (4 20 min sessions) and had absolutely zero issues with the diff. albeit im not a pro driver but neither is 99% of the population.
@@GearHead_Mediahow how much time between the sessions? maybe the diff had time to cool down between them.
@@robertulrich3964 sure, there were 2 hours between sessions, which is pretty standard for many time attack and racing groups. My point being it is an issue but not one that many people see in the real world because most people aren’t going to be racing these at a more strenuous rate than that.
The biggest fallacy I see is people in particular indicating that all it takes is 1 - 3 laps. This may be the case for a small minority but in my experience driving on track and talking to other owners in the groups I’ve driven in, I’ve yet to hear anyone actually run into the issue. Again not to say it doesn’t exist, it’s just not THAT prominent. Same with the oil pressure issues in the GR86/BRZ does it exist? Yes. Have the vast majority of owners who track their 86/BRZ run into the consequences of this? Not from what I’ve seen. Sucks it’s an issue and it shouldn’t be one but you can certainly take the car out for a track day and the majority of the population won’t do more than that because of how cost prohibitive it is to race.
Cool.
He has the big ball but keeps dropping the load early 😂
Makes video about cars UK can't get. Specifically states its not a competition.
Comments ignore both of those details and turn it into a competition about cars they can already get.
The only cars that were missed on the test: The Elantra N and Civic type R
UK gets GR yaris tho
The cars urban to type R GT pro not exhause and normatif.
My Circuit Edition would only last about three hot laps at Apex before turning into a FWD car due to the overheating diff clutch pack.
It was fun while it worked, but had to sell it.
The overheating clutch pack issue has just about crushed my desire to get a GR Corolla. I hope Toyota comes up with a solution.
Real question, how does it drive as a strictly FWD vehicle? Folks seem to love driving the Civic Type R and Hyundai Elantra N cars and they are of course FWD. Like is the "magic" lost when the GR Corolla turns into FWD only? Or is it also fun, just in a different way?
@@ragweedmakesmesneeze It's still fun but you can tell a big difference right away. If you're expecting the car to behave like an AWD car and you don't see the warning, it's unnerving.
Really wish Mitsubishi would make a come back
9.30 were are we supposed to enjoy this car in the UK? Our roads are ....... Can't drive more than 70 MPH!
dont need to go fast with the brz to have fun, not like you can go too fast in one tho
Is it just me or the colour grading of the video is over done?
reup?
Thanks for good GR review , and then I switched to another video when i saw BRZ😂
Wheres jeremy
I tired watching it again months later and I still can’t do it
I just recently got a circuit edition and I am waiting to get through my break in period and then I can have some fun
Complaining you didn’t get the Corolla? Well we didn’t get the little Yaris, am I to not complain about that? I’d rather the little Yaris.
What do I feel like I've seen this before?
Wouldn't necessarily want to track the new BRZ/GR86 with the oiling issue that's been going on and the fact that Toyota and Subaru will not warranty a fix even though the problem is due to their poor design
