      Question, how would you compare this 28mm to the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 @ 28mm?

    I use this lens on my a7iii along with a 85 1.8 for weddings. I have 72 weddings to shoot this year. A good few came over from last year also but still. Something is working with this lens choice. This 28mm will be on my camera for a long time to come.

      I’m considering this same setup, plus my 70-200 f4. How has it gone so far, any regrets not going with the 35 f1.8 instead?

    Regarding the corner sharpness testing, as you can see by the file names at 3:07 and 3:14 those are two different shots, the first one is focused in the center and the second in the corner. I also always check lenses for decentering to be sure that the left corner is representative.

    I picked up this lens and an a7SII. It makes a great vlogging setup! It's about as small a lens as you'll find to fit these cameras. Probably very similar to the a7III setup you've got going.

    Thanks for this review! New sub. Just purchased A7 iii, but having trouble getting good quality versions of 35mm 1.4 lens to achieve nice bokeh. Will use for both video and stills and your review seems to suggest that AF on both is excellent. Are you achieving good bokeh even at F2 and am I understanding you correctly that the AF that the A7 iii is known for is supported on this lens?

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're welcome, I appreciate your subscription. I unfortunately haven't tested any of the 35mm F1.4 lenses for FE E-mount, so I can't help you there, but at that wide angle you need aperture under F2 to blurr the background. Sony A7 III autofocus is supported on all Sony E-mount lenses.

    Can you do a FE 28mm F2 vs Sigma 16mm 1.4 Crop Mode comparison on the A7iii???

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I generally don't recommend using crop mode on A7 III unless you don't have any other lens around it is a waste of A7 III potential. 28mm F2 is much better on A7 III, the difference is huge.

  • @tekguyphoto

    Thanks for the review. I was looking for this lens for my A73 for a trip to Europe. I only have the Sony kit lens which is terrible but will do as a walk around lens. I was looking for a low light lens but I'm not sure how this compares to the 28-70 at 28mm focal length at f3.5 which is the largest aperture. Any other lens ideas for a small travel lens for the Sony FF. Going to Budapest, Austria and Romania. I'm heavily invested in Canon with L lenses but I wanted something small for the trip and leave the DSLR at home. Plus I like the 4K video option on the Sony.

      Samyang AF 35mm F2.8 is great pancake lens with versatile focal lenght - amzn.to/2MrYLpU that one is very compact and travel friendly.

    Nice review. I’d like to see a comparison of the Sigma 16mm 1.4 on A6500 vs this lens on the A7III. I get the feeling it would be a draw in low light capability and overall the sigma might have the edge in sharpness? It’s one of the reasons I think I’ll keep the A6500 and wait until Sony release a body with 4K 60

  • @korrze
    @korrze 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I just bought an a7iii and I'm having trouble deciding between the soon to be released Sigma 20mm 1.4 or the 24mm 1.4... I really want wide angle but the 20mm has no thread for filters and has a fixed lens hoods, and also weighs 2.09lb.
    But the 24mm can use filters and weighs 1.46lb.
    My question is, is the 4mm focal difference worth getting the 20mm for having a wide lens? I'm looking to use it for vlog purpose/gimbal work and don't want anything too close.

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That depends purely on your preferences, there is not much that can be recommended there. I would personally prefer 24mm.

    • @EdL2814
      @EdL2814 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Korrze have shot with both lengths quite often, the wideness difference is quite noticeable to the point you'd have to find out for yourself what purpose you want the lens for. I can say the 20mm is sharper than the 24mm but theyre both so sharp it doesn't even matter, especially if its just for video.
      20mm enters the "ultra wide" zone where things get some perspective distortion rolling and can get some dramatic looks, especially for fast gimbal movement. 24mm however is a bit more standard so you dont need to be as careful with the corners and peoples head.
      Best way to find out though is to rent them out and try for yourself, or rent out a cheap 16-35 f4 and play with the two focal lengths in different scenarios to see which is more suitable. Maybe even ask or borrow a friends camera/lens/setup with the same field of views available.

  • @theizza68
    @theizza68 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Your sharpness test doesn't make sense to me. You get a landscape shot with the lens wide open and then you check corners too?... You should be using something flat where you can actually get the picture in focus. I'm not trying to be rude, I've watched many of your videos and I'm a sub.

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      As you can see by the file names at 3:07 and 3:14 those are two different shots, the first one is focused in the center and the second in the corner. I also always check lenses for decentering to be sure that the left corner is representative.

      I have the sony a7 3 and a sony 28mm F2 , and not sure if the lens is supposed to click when you put the sony lens on?....It will not click and I am getting a lens warning that it is not on correctly, but I can only turn it so much before its too tight, but no click.
      Also, when I turn on the a7 3, the camera has a small jolt to it and when I pick it up from the desk, it also has the same small jolt, is it supposed to do this!??

    Thanks for the review! What do you think about this lens compared to the Sony/Zeiss 25mm F2? Do you think the 25mm is worth the extra money? Or that the extra 3mm makes that much of a difference?

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You're welcome, I have never used either of Zeiss 25mm lenses, so I can't compare those to this lens, 3mm on the wide make quite significant difference, 25mm is a bit too wide for all-round use IMO.

    In my experience, Sony usually installs a metal vanity shell on their $400+ and up lenses. The Sony 85mm 1.8 also has this shell. Other than the metal shell, the entire lense is plastic. I really wish sony would use metal construction in some of these lenses. Even the 50mm and 35mm 1.4 ZA are full of plastic,

      Jason Elmore true, my 55mm broke. The metal mount in the lens is connected with the plastic inside of the lens. Really bad construction. I almost would think Sony does this on purpose.

      It is very suitable for gimbal use. It is a wide angle prime lens so will loose the zoom range.

      Ah thank you. With Zoom range I can zoom a bit with the Super 35 mode and also using clear image zoom to get a bit more so I think the zoom range will be okay. In terms of lens quality is it much better than the kit lens.

      It is the A7 III and I want to do both video and stills. Last question. For video where I am going into a dark room to the bright outdoors do you recommend that I use auto ISO so that the light changes smoothly or should I change the aperture and leave it on manual ISO. Thanks

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      10 megapixels for stills in Super 35 mode on A7 III is not that great, you might want to get some other lens. Whether you should auto ISO depends purely on your style, I persoanlly use auto ISO most of the time.

    Dude, you've gone all Sony. You've lost we Panasonic users...shame, it was good while it lasted.

      No, I haven't gone all Sony, I still have a lot of Panasonic equipment and videos coming up soon. At the moment I am building Sony FE system, so there will be more videos about Sony on this channel for a while. It was the opposite when I got the G9 in January.

      The Hybrid Shooter it’s a balancing act. A lot of us save and invest in something like the GH5/G9 and cannot afford to buy an Aiii ‘upgrade’ when it comes out. We are invested in our system. But I understand the needs of building a channel and covering the latest gear. It’s a funny thing though, when you have what you thought was the best camera, and something new comes out you suddenly feel like the poor relation. Hey ho! I still love my GH5.

      The Building Sheriff, the Hybrid Shooter said 'there will be no winner this time' and that was appropriate. This was not a horse race. Regarding the G9 what he failed to point out is that the 4k 60p video provides a hugely smoother product in and of itself, not just for slo-mo, which for many, myself included, given the subject matter, is critical. Right there for that reason the A7 III is simply not an option. He also did not point out for wildlife shooters, especially those venturing off the beaten trail, who need mega-zoom lenses going with the A7 III is hugely heavier on the wallet and the back. Still, a useful comparison very well presented. I would like to view more clips of what he actually shoots.

      The Building Sheriff I understand that, but the primary purpose of this channel is to provide people with information, that they might need to make a right choice if they intend to buy something, if the equipment that you have suits your needs well, there is no reason not to be happy with it just because there is something new on the market.

      MultiJohnish I didn't fail to point that out. Regarding the 4K60p, if the footage is not interpreted to 24 /25p it does not provide smooth "product" just the opposite. 16 min. long comparison of two cameras is really no palce to explain what 4K60p does.
      The prices of telephoto lenses are not a secret, so anybody can take a look at them, but FF and MFT telephoto lenses that are on the market, have completely different light gathering capabilities which is why they are not directly comparable.

    I have compiled the tests and scores for 100 Sony E-Mount lenses from many different sites. The Sony FE 28mm F2 scores amongst the lowest scores of any lenses ever tested, with the worst chromatic aberration and the worst distortion. However, sharpness is good.

      Thanks to the in-camera corrections those test fortunately don't matter.

      The CA matters a lot. I got rid of the lens cause I could not remove the CA from video footage.

      What camera did you use it on? There is no CA at all after correction with A7 III as you can see in the video.

      Zangeef Fangsteen I have the lens and the distortion and chromatic aberration are not to much of a problem as is the bokeh quality (terrible for some scenarios).
