    I travelled with this lens on the A7ii and I found the focal length a bit strange but i kinda liked it seeing as 28 is a bit niche compared to 35mm and 50mm so i rolled with it. I was overseas for about a year and had a 50mm and a 85mm as well. Even though it took me a bit of warming up, when i looked back at all my photos i found that the ones i took with the 28 were my favourite. I'll admit, my attention is usually peaked towards wider angle photography but i found this lens so useful in the street which is where most of my shots were taken. It's small, light and cheap. Yes the distortion is the worst feature of this lens but i even managed to add a profile for it on my pirated Lightroom which fixes it easily, some photos i even kept the distortion cause i like the effect in some occasions if i want to exaggerate whats close to the camera. Street photography is a lot easier when you have a smaller lens like this one and i didn't draw attention in dangerous places with it. Sharpness is more than adequate and if you want better bokeh than go with a 35mm or longer for better potraits (obviously).
    Long winded thoughts on this lens but I can't understand the complaints when two faults are corrected with a click in LR and its great value. I find myself contemplating to sell it but there are no 35mm lenses that are small and around F2/F1.8 for sony which is baffling, so im keeping it for now. plus F2 at this price and size aren't that easy to find you know.

    I have this lens with the Sony A7R II. Everyone's need is different. To me this 28, or any 28, is best suited for street photography. When I use the monitor instead of the viewfinder to frame my subjects, I must say I become fairly invisible. The quality of the lens is, shall I say, excellent. Bottom line is unless you're a professional charging people $500 an hour, this is the one to have since you don't need to impress anyone. The A7RII also allows you to shot in APSC mode. It's like having two lenses, 28 and 40.

Which would you reckon is more useful as a general purpose lens? :) Thank you again with your help for choosing a vacation lens, the sigma contemporyry 30mm got me some amazing photos :)

    Hi great review! I can see now this is not the lens for me. Thanks for saving me the time and money. One question. You said that using this on a crop sensor camera would produce a little broader depth of field around F3. Why is that? Is it because a smaller area of the lens is being used so less light? thanks!

    uuuuh, the amount of bokeh isnt going to change depending on your sensor size. bokeh is completely lens dependent. the reason people say you get less bokeh on a crop is that you need to use a shorter focal length to get the same field of view, which will decrease the amount of bokeh. but thats not really relevant if you are comparing a prime lense on a crop vs full frame.

    1:04 How can the depth of field and rendering of a lens change if you change the camera? A 28/2 is a 28/2. It always draws like a 28/2. Regardless of the size of film behind it....

    • @nerdMike
      @nerdMike 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      it changes, the exposure is the same, but the equivalent focal and also dof change, lot of contents about it on TH-cam and Internet to test it. It becomes 42mm F3 speaking of Dof.. you can try by yourself.. shot with this 28mm F2 on apsc and then put a similar 40mm 2.8 on Fullframe (42mm doesn't exist), you'll get the same result as dof and out of focus background. I've tested it on Canon 40mm 2.8 and Fuji 27mm 2.8 apsc, 40.5mm F4.2 equivalent (with the fullframe Canon at F4/4.2 you get same blur background and DoF with same distant from the subject and angle of view like the Fuji @ 27mm F2.8)

    • @sinoperture
      @sinoperture 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nerdMike You can't change the rendering or DOF of a lens by changing the size of the film plane behind it. I shoot a lot of large and medium format and a lens is a lens. Only the equivalent field of fov changes. In the same way as cropping out the centre of a 4x5 sheet film.

    • @sinoperture
      @sinoperture 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nerdMike So you used different lenses then? I am talking about the logic that putting the exact same lens on a different camera crop multiplier will change how that lens will render DOF. The field of view is the only thing that will change. If you change focal lengths (lenses) to get an equivalent field of view given a different crop factor then you may get similar DOF if you change other variables like the aperture. Though you won't get the same spatial rendering/compression as a different lens. Thats why you can say a 18mm lens may have a field of new equal to a 28 mm lens on 135. But no matter how much you change the aperture or anything else, it won't render the same or compress the same. So it is not equivalent to. Some focal lengths are not that special in how they optically perform. So in the extremely long or short you can drop in and out and get away with it. But the 24-60 range - the equivalent field of view renderings on smaller formats look anything but equivalent. There is a reason why a 28mm lens was so iconic on super 35 film shoots. It had a look that is different to 50mm on 135 film even though their field of views were equivalent.

      @@sinoperture yes I'm speaking about equivalent lens and system (sensor format). If I use crop mode on the same camera it doesn't affect DoF at all 👍🏻

    i got this lens a few months back to replace my very poor & faulty emount Sigma 35mm F1.4 & I actually love the focal length for street fashion shoots... the AF & eye AF works very well unlike the sigma 35 art... highly recomended & it will not break the bank too...

      I own both , and I have to say the 28mm stays on my camera far more than the 35mm
      the image quality is about the same , plus the 28mm tracks subjects perfectly in video or photo mode .. the 35mm does come with more contrast though , but you can always boost those settings up in your camera or in post

      @@brunofalcone9979 well I guess it depends on what you use it for ... for example I use it for general purpose when I want my set-up to be light and compact , and image quality isn't as much of a priority . like for travel, or smaller gigs .. when image quality is priority I'll go with a batis prime or tamron zoom ..
      but for general all-around use , the 28mm is perfect .. if you have full-frame , it crops to 42mm in super 35 mode .. it's an all around solid lens when you want a light an easy set-up, not too professional

      trevorpinnocky If you shoot at F2 there will be Bokeh, if the Bokeh is bad then what’s the point of a 28mm F2? Might as well use another lens that has good Bokeh and similar (or even different) focal length.
      MANY people use this lens for Bokeh, not everyone takes photos or videos the same.
