    do you lose any clarity with the ultra wide lens? video or photos?

  • @doplinger1
    @doplinger1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +30

    I think you need to make it clear to people that the distortion is very easily corrected in RAW. The JPEGs are the exact same photo as the RAW files but corrected in-camera. This is an excellent lens and super sharp, an excellent value.

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  8 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      +Dave Oplinger I tried to make that as clear as possible, but good point and thanks for the feedback Dave :) I agree the lens is a great value all around!!

    • @ronhazlewood6767
      @ronhazlewood6767 7 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      "Tried to make it as clear as possible"? More than a dozen times you compare jpg vs RAW, and the only difference you mention is the distortion. You know that the same lens correction that is applied to the jpg IN CAMERA, is the same lens correction applied to any RAW file opened in any RAW editor worth it's salt, right? If I was a NOOB, I would have been scared away from shooting RAW files immediately. You didn't make it clear at all! You've misrepresented the differences between RAW and jpg, and have done newbies a disservice.

    The best review of the Sony FE 28mm f/2. The barrel distortion is the easiest thing to be corrected digitally without any quality problem. So it isn't a big issue with the Sony FE 28mm f/2.0. The vignetting is easy to be corrected too but can reduce slightly the quality at the corners. The chromatic aberration is harder to be corrected digitally and the result isn't t always perfect.
    The price of adapters may seems high but are really cheap for a full frame camera. Of course they deteriorate the quality and I suggest to be used only with bright light at f/8.

    Got the 28mm f2 and I think it's a pretty sharp lens for a Sony Lens. Just got the 21mm ultra wide last night and did a time lapse using the app. It's a pretty nice combo, and I'm glad I got it both.

    Great review man! For the price I can't really think of a better walk around street lens for my A7S. I've got an adapter to use my Nikon glass on it but it sticks out quite far and I lose auto focus. I was worried about the sharpness (not really too worried about the corners and distortion as it isn't much of an issue for street and doc shooting) but you convinced me this lens is definitely a solid performer.

    Hi Jay, amazing video as usual.
    Do you think this lens will have the same distortion when mounted on the a6000 ?? Considering it will act as a 42mm lens so no longer a wide angle. Thanks

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Valère Thanks for the nice comments and your assumptions are correct. The lens will suffer from less distortion on the A6000, because it's only using the center area of the glass and not all the way to to the edges. You will still have some barrel distortion for sure, but corner to corner will not be as noticeable..

  • @tkarim
    @tkarim 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    On a full frame a7 series would you choose this FE lens plus the wide angle converter or the aps-c Sigma 16mm f1.4 I’m super 35 mode? I’m still undecided.. (quality of image, autofocus, low-light) I realize the 16 won’t be using the full potential of the FF sensor. Your thoughts?

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question! I would rather use the full frame sensor to it's potential and would go for a lens like this depending on the budget.
      Otherwise I would get something like the RX10 IV for my video needs. That does everything awesome for video, but doesn't offer that full frame A7-series look.
      I have not tested the Sigma 16mm f/1.4 lens, so I can't speak for the AF abilities. It may be noisy and/ or clunky in the focus department when recording video. I'm not sure and would need to check reviews on that to know for sure. Otherwise it would be awesome on paper for Super 35mm mode. If using Super 35mm Mode, you can go for the A6300 or A6500 as well. You could also go for the 16mm f/2.8 pancake lens for use in Super 35mm Mode. See all the available E-Mount Lenses in my guide Here: sonyalphalab.com/sony-alpha-and-nex-technology-camera-and-lens-tutorial-guides/nex-lense-e-mount-buying-guide/
      I hope that helps you out a little at least ;)

      Jay SonyAlphaLab thanks for the prompt reply. To add more context to my question... I preordered the a7iii and am looking for a good (affordable lens in the range of 20-24mm). It comes down to these two: Sigma 16 (aps-c) and Sony 28 (full frame with the wide angle converter). I’m not worried about autofocus noise as I use an external audio source. Which lens setup (in terms of image quality and low light performance) will benefit most from the full frame sensor?

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Without using the Sigma, I can not say for sure. I would really need to test it out and then compare the Super 35mm footage vs the full frame footage honestly. Low light wise, yes the f/1.4 Sigma lens should be way better, no question. However if the focus is choppy and you need AF, that is a deal breaker. I can't say one way or another. Using the FE 28mm and wide angle converter is a great option for full frame coverage, smooth focus, lower cost, but not the best option for low light. It's always a compromise...

  • @danielflorez1407
    @danielflorez1407 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Would this lens be good to use on a Sony a6000? I watched another youtuber and he recommended to save up a tad more to get this lens instead of a Sigma 30mm F/1.8 because it has some "significant" purple fringing and also in case users want to eventually step up to a full frame sensor.

    • @Jason_Hermann

      Vidurg Yes it is, but my Lightroom 5 did not have the lens profiles to fix the distortion automatically. New lenses need Lightroom 6 unfortunately it looks like. How about AF while using conversion comparable just with 28mm itself?Does that fisheye conversion able to capture in 180• angle? Because I need to shoot 360• panorama using this in a7 system. And how about corner quality while using fisheye conversion? (fringing/sharpness)Thank you for sharing!

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ajie Pratama I would get a dedicated fisheye lens as apposed to the conversion lens. The quality is pretty good, but not as good in the corners as I think you would want for your 360 degree work. It does soften a bit and does have some fringing. Not terrible, but not as good as a dedicated quality fisheye lens. It also slows down to f/3.5 when using the fisheye adapter...

    Just bought an A7S II. Considering this, or the Sony E PZ 16-50mm. (I mainly do videos and vlog) Which do you recommend?

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Zach, the E PZ 16-50mm is for the crop factor e-mount cameras like the A6500 for example. The A7s II is a full frame e-mount camera, so you would be forced to use crop factor mode on the A7s II if you were to use that lens. Check out my E-Mount Lens Guide Page for all the available lenses Here: sonyalphalab.com/sony-alpha-and-nex-technology-camera-and-lens-tutorial-guides/nex-lense-e-mount-buying-guide/
      Remember, your looking for a full frame e-mount lens (FE), unless you are using Super 35mm Mode for your filming? Super 35mm is crop factor mode, so the smaller E lenses will work in that mode. If so, the 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens would be my recommendations.
      I hope that helps,
      Jay

    Did you try shutter speeds 1/FL rule of thumb?
    The lenght with converter lens gets longer but FL gets shorter IYKWIM.
    Are you able to shoot RAW with these converter lenses? My Fuji X100 only does jpeg when converter lens attached.
    Thanks Mike

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Mike Hydropneumatic Hello and thanks for the comments, Yes you can shoot RAW quality with the lens converters or any lens for that matter ;) I did not try the FL rule, but it should apply for the most part even though the lens does get a bit longer... The filed of view is more of a factor than actual lens length I believe. You may need to bump up the shutter speed a little though depending on your steady hand abilities...

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +raedchen1 Yes that is true. It uses focus by wire, and is not as good as the buttery smooth Zeiss Loxia lens for example... It does work pretty good though, just not that perfect hand to focus you might be used if using a lens that does have a direct connection.

    you keep mentioning the distortion that is corrected in the jpgs. Do the required adjustments / config files exist to easily do this in Lightroom with the RAW files?

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brian Sullivan The raw files would need adjustment in Lightroom, but jpeg files would not. The lens correction profiles will exist in the latest version of Lightroom 5, but they do not exist in my lightroom 4 program as shown in this video. Therefore, Lightroom 5 would correct the raw files for you if you checked the box in the lens correction area... Not 100% sure if this lens profile has been re-leased yet by Adobe though.

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mooniesworld Good question and no there would not be much difference at all. The A7r has more resolution and no AA filter in front of the sensor, so the results will be slightly sharper if all other things are the same. Real world the results will look very similar in my opinion. On the computer screen they would look near identical, but when viewing at 100% the extra resolution would be noticeable on the A7r. This has nothing to do with the lens though, so it will perform awesome on the A7 if that is what you are ultimately wondering ;)

      Yes, thank you. One other question... If am going to start off only buying one lens for my camera, do you think this is a good choice? or would you rather recommend a 50mm. Do you think there's lots of distortion on close ups or non-wide angle photographs, or could I buy it as the primary lens? Thanks for your help

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      With only one lens I would go with the 35mm f/2.8 or the 55mm f/1.8 lens. 28mm is a bit to wide for portraits in my opinion and the distortion when up close is petty noticeable. Have you considered the 24-240mm all in one solution?

      +Tano Hardman 28*1.5 is 42mm if i can still calculate correctly, so just a little wider than a 50mm. And to get the look of a 50 1.8 full frame on a aps-c body, you need more like a 30-35mm and about f1.2 to get approximatly the same depth of field

    Thank you

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Paul Angelos Thanks and it is odd I agree, but does make some sense. Basically the short sensor to lens mount flange distance is only 18mm. That short distance requires much larger optics than ideal for wide angle lenses in particular. So, if you want sharp corners and no distortion, the lens will be huge if a wide angle. Sony doesn't want all the lenses to be huge, so they compromise and allow for some camera correction in order to keep the lens physically smaller, lighter, and cheaper. The camera does not correct raw files for optical distortion, but jpeg files are corrected by default.
      I hope that helps clear things up?
      Jay

    Why don't you correct the lens when shooting in RAW by using the lens profile? Or just reducing barrel distortion by 2% should do it. JPG is really nice for most photos but I still think a corrected RAW would be better.

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Edgar Pifflewiff Because I was illustrating what the lens produces in raw quality. The lens profile is not available for Lightroom 5 anyway. It's really easy to compare the distortion using jpeg vs raw I thought... I agree Raw is way more powerful and better for editing!

    Hows this lens compared with 35mm 1.8 specially for video since it doesn't have OSS

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sajid Assad Well, the 35mm f/1.8 lens is designed for the APS-C e-mount cameras like the A6000. This lens is designed for the full frame e-mount cameras like my A7r. That being said, they are pretty similar although the 28mm has more distortion I would say and the OSS is nice on the 35mm lens. The OSS is a great feature, but the newer cameras have IBIS, so I'm thinking the faster prime lenses for the full frame e-mount will not have OSS most likely. The smaller APS-C lenses can get away with adding that in to a point. The higher end Zeiss Touit lenses don't have OSS though for example. full frame e-mount vs aps-c e-mount: sonyalphalab.com/sony-alpha-and-nex-technology-camera-and-lens-tutorial-guides/nex-lense-e-mount-buying-guide/
