    The family and I went tent camping this past August. We had a freak temperature drop. Was expecting 70°f at night, ended up in the 40s. I will be packing my Mr. Heater for every camping trip from now on. Better to have it and not need it, then need it and not have it.

      We live in an RV now, and we left Mr Heater in the storage unit in Texas and were in the North Georgia mountains. Tania is asking me, "excuse me, where is my Buddy, I'm COLD!!!" LOL

  • @peppat27
    @peppat27 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    You hit the nail on the head! It's not that I like being cold. I love winter camping because I like getting warm in the cold. Nothing better than sipping a hot toddy by the fire and then snuggling into my warm sleeping bag in my heated tent in the evening. Living in Florida we chase the cold to the Georgia mountains to enjoy a mild winter and cozy fun.
    Also, I second all your tips! Camp cots, wool socks and hot hands are the best!

      Sorry for the delayed response, we've been busy with selling our house and moving into an RV. It's actually cold in the RV at the moment because I need to swap out the propane tanks, and I'm fascinating about holding my hands by the heat, LOL.

    Great ideas on cold weather camping, I love my wool blanket wrapped around a 40 degree sleeping bag, I'm good to well below freezing with that, wool sock are a must in the northern mountains in the wintertime. We have used one...with small tank and you are spot on with the middle of the night change. Wanted to add we also did tons of research and watched similar video of guy testing carbon monoxide levels inside a tent and none of the sensors went off and his tent was canvas with less built in air vents. Our 10 by 14 has a rainfly over mesh ceiling that sits a good 6 inches over the mesh, plenty of air flow, but also has two, floor level side vents, one on each end of tent that you stake out so we didn't worry about the propane. We block the vent on one end to keep tent warmer. Also, if there happens to be electric, even in heavily wooded campground that's a win. Take a strong gauge extension cord and a heater with auto shut off. Will not overhear in the night. One more tip... the boot and hand warmer instant packs can keep you warm inside your sleeping bag and it's a must to layer. Layer layer layer.. you'll stay toasty warm... Watch Matthew Posa camp in his sleeping bag on the snow packed ground under a tarp in 20* and enjoy it....You'll never fear camping in 40* again. Lol
    Ok, one more, tarp your tent!! This insulates it nicely. If you still want your tent vented on top tarping the side walls helps by several degrees. My husband and I have tent camped from Florida to Vermont , mostly state and national parks and loved every minute of it. As long as there's hot coffee every morning. Ha

    Before we had kids, we went tent camping & it started to rain when we were supposed to make dinner. We brought our mini charcoal grill INTO the tent. Not smart. 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♂️ That Mr. Heater looks like a great addition to keep you warm. I love the idea of taking it outside to keep your feet warm while you eat. Brilliant.

    Great tips.👍👍👍 BTW, I didnt notice your shirt until you pointed it out 😉
    P.s, if you get a propane hose fuel filter, it will keep your heater from getting gummed up with the chemicals inside the hose.

    • @TexasFamilyCamping
      @TexasFamilyCamping  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The filter isn't necessary when you use an official Mr Heater hose. Mr Heater doesn't use typical oils in their hoses like the other brands and per their official documentation, a filter isn't needed with their hoses. But highly recommended when using non-official hoses. Now it's also recommended to replace the Mr Heater hose more often, as those oils in hoses help with aging. So the official hoses will dry rot much faster. But, I can honestly say, I'm at about 4 years now and the same hose is still doing great, and no gummed up issues.

    • @JennBX1
      @JennBX1 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @TexasFamilyCamping Actually I had thought about that and was going to skip buying the filter, and get the right hose. Thank you 😊

    A nice option for anyone who wants to go without propane are heating bricks. NOT to be confused with regular red building bricks, these bricks are specially made to be put next to or in a campfire and then when you’re ready for bed, pull them out with a stick and wrap in 100% wool and they are like the best reheatable pads.

  •  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Excellent video, however Mr heater sells and highly recommends that you use the inline filter when using a hose and remote tank. Reason being that the hose interior breaks down and debris will ruin your heater.

    • @TexasFamilyCamping
      @TexasFamilyCamping  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Per Mr. Heaters official documentation, the filter is only needed if using a hose of a different brand as they are made with oils that leach out and get into the heater. Mr Heater brand hoses do not use that oil in the production of the hose. However a replacement hose will need to be purchased more often because of the lack of those oils.

    Great Video. With the MR heater do you have to worry of carbon monoxide leaking inside your tent ?

    • @TexasFamilyCamping
      @TexasFamilyCamping  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No you do not, I did a lot of research and watched a lot of videos before I bought the heater myself. The only concern is that when it uses all the oxygen, the flame goes out. To prevent that, vent your tent window at least 18 inches to allow some fresh air to feed into the tent. And that will not cause the tent to get too cold. We were able to keep the tent almost too warm with the heater.

    • @TexasFamilyCamping
      @TexasFamilyCamping  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Make sure it has oxygen, by venting the window a little bit, and make sure nothing will get past that little protection. If it tips over it will auto shut off, so the only danger at that point is, you getting cold. It doesn't have harmful gases. But if the air gets low, it will also shut off. Just remember, 18 inches of window opening. Trust me, it won't let in too much cold air. You'll be nice and toasty

    41° isn't even worth bothering sparking up a heater where I live if you have a good sleeping bag system. I'm guessing you are down in Texas or some place that has no practical clue about deep cold. I live in northern Alberta, Canada and camp even in winter - Canadian winter - at -30°!
    With all that my-winter-is-colder-than-your-winter stuff out of the way, hypothermia is a risk even at +50°F if you are damp/wet and the wind comes up like on high country hikes. Fog, dew or light rain can be a real risk, but so can propane heaters like the "Buddy Heater" style heaters. When propane is burned, water vapour is created. There is enough vapour to make your clothing and bedding damp enough to not only make you miserable, but will increase the risk for hypothermia. Just thought I'd put that caution out there... I was nearly a fatality from hypothermia courtesy of my ignorance/inexperience as a young fella. Hypothermia is a sneaky thing and shivering is just the beginning; irrational thoughts and actions, listlessness and uncoordination, limbs heavy like lead are just a few signs.
    God bless and play safe from an Albertan neighbour.

    • @TexasFamilyCamping
      @TexasFamilyCamping  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I would totally try camping at -30, BUT the rest of my family would not. The moisture from the burning propane can be felt on the tent itself, so we move in a bit to avoid touching the walls to stay dry.

    The best way to heat a tent would be with a tent stove. Unfortunately the smallest I could find cost about $500 and weighs over 7 pounds. Its totally unnecessary that they should be that colossal. You could easily heat a two person tent with a stove half that size. Even 1/4th. Most people aren't expecting to lay out in shorts in the dead of winter. They are just looking not to freeze to death while wearing winter clothes. Anything that will raise the temperature a little above freezing wile venting out the CO would do. The most viable options I've seen are DIY stoves but I don't have the time or skills for that.

      Most people can haul those stoves. I know what you are talking about, and they are great in the much colder climates. I'm hoping to have experience with one of those some day.

      Not yet. We haven't had the RV long enough to cold weather camp yet. We have used the built in heater out back behind the house, just to test it out.

    if the heater runs out of oxygen so will anyone in the tent

    • @TexasFamilyCamping
      @TexasFamilyCamping  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It actually runs out of oxygen before the levels get dangerously low to humans. I've seen it happen, it quit burning, I could still breath though. I typically crack the window zippers on two windows about 18 inches and it works just fine.
