Slowing Menna down, 1st training session. In this short series of videos I am looking at trying to slow Menna down. In doing so I hope to gain more control over her and as a by product help her develop more confidence when working close to the sheep. It's a very much suck it and see what happens session, and as the training develops I will figure out hopefully what is working and what is not.
Any way here is the first session in this phase of her training.
In this series on Training My Sheepdog, I show how I train my own Border Collie Menna from start to finish with my own rare breed sheep.
It will involve mistakes and how to solve them as we take this journey together.
I also have a series on Training Protection Dogs, Dog Agility Training
and 'How To' Explanation Training Videos which will expand from 'Beginners' to 'Expert' in knowledge and skills set.
As a Dog Trainer of many years standing, mainly in the world of Protection and Security Dogs and their handlers, I have always wanted to train my own sheepdog for the purpose they were bred for, I have owned and trained many but for pets and search/ detection work.

Menna needs some positive encouragement when she does the right thing by the tone of your voice. She is bored just going around in circles and not working just eyeing them in a chase mode. She needs some flock work on at least 20 to 30 dog broke sheep, moving them from one pen to another pen. Intelligent dogs need encouragement and see a purpose in their work. Working bigger numbers will make her keep off and focus more. Lots of top handlers in the UK can provide you with sheep and training knowledge, better then I can. Try contacting Ricky Hutchinson or the ISDS.
