Great video! Amazing how it shows this weakness on the right very plainly which mean you can improve it!

Yes..all that cleaned up lovely on him after. I think if i hadnt used the round pen though, that it would have been very easy to sour him training it

Paddy I have gone back to this video multiple times and I think it’s a great training exercise to teach young dogs their sides. I feel with tight pushy intense or anxious dogs it also keeps them off sheep and allows them to relax a bit as the sheep can’t get away from them. Thank you for this video. What is the diameter of the round yard?

Thats great that you think it is useful. I like to burn off a dog that is over keen, first, so that their mind can slow down and soak in the training. I change the diameter of the pen for different things or different ages of dogs. But here in this one there are about 20x6 foot gates so i think that makes the diameter about 30yards

I think some people might find my volume and tone abit offensive at times but at no point am i getting mad at the dog. This was a nice way to break this dog's will to go to balamce and disregard the command..it gives him time to choose. When i am training i try to make the right thing easy and the wrong thing hard..so that the dog can choose. But you'll know that already

Ralf wasn't great to shed at the start becuase he didnt like coming through and letting go of sheep..so i made this one, you might like it or be able to use if for something

Do you teach him off-balance flanks with movement using your body as well as without the round pen?
And teaching inside flanks same time with off-balance flanks for any particular reason? Because I teach them off-balance flanks with my body (or position, I should say) from almost start then inside flanks for later stage. Which dogs are more cautious about my presence and hesitate to cross in front of me plus looks at me more on cross drive with me walking side.
I need to see more of videos how you have started him.

I usually don't use the round pen for teaching inside or off balance flanks but Ralf was tricky and he didnt want to let go of his balance on the sheep..so I was fighting with him abit and it wasn't working..so then i decided to do it on the round pen and it worked real well to communicate the idea to him.
More recently I have done it with a 6month old dog I'm training and it was nice becuase there is very little pressure for the dog

    Go right!
    - And dog goes right.
You repeat go right, with louder voice.
    - Dog stops and thinks about going left.
This makes no sense, I'm on the dogs side ;) *LOL*

Could it be that the dog was doing the right direction but was starting to look hesistant and before waiting for him to decide to turn back, I reminded him to continue on same direction? I guess you can't see everything from the drone but the reason I made this video is to try and give people a birds eye view of the principles of teaching a dog it's left and right.
