Something about Gen 3. For obvious reasons, it has massive "Pokemon going from the 90s to 2000's" vibes. Like it a lot though. Lots of greatness came out in these years
It was truly the transition point in the series it feels. I do remember alot complaining of the designs back when it first game out too lol
I wonder if "Lottery" was meant to evolve into any other Pokemon, chosen at random. The fact that evolution is its major feature in its dex entries yet it doesn't have anything to evolve into struck me as odd, and it being able to change into literally anything would match the lottery theme and explain why its dex entries marvel so much at how drastically it can change shape!
The Archeopteryx Pokemon - being Rock/Flying, actually feels more like an early version of Archeops more than Grovyle in my opinion, especially given the exact dinosaur it seems to be based on. It seems the idea was re-purposed for gen 5.
The Red Spider Lily pokemon became the Ralts line. There is even a nod to this in ORAS. When battling Wally at the end of Victory Road, the battlefield is surrounded by red spider lilies which appear nowhere else in the game.
That's quite a stretch I say. Different species, big type, colour. But maybe a super slight chance
@@TheObsessiveGamer it’s mostly in the dex entries about these Pokémon using their antenna to read thoughts, being similar to the entries for Ralts in RSE, as well as the detail that only females of the species have been found. Gardevoir is easily the most overtly feminine Pokémon since Jynx, I think there is a good chance that this ladylike lily was reworked into Gardevoir.
@@HesGotaGun505 you know Ralts also come in male form too right?
Very cool :)
@@TheObsessiveGamer they were referring to how Gardevoir is feminine in *design*
Considering they're both 6'7 and seemingly only one stage, maybe those two bird Pokemon were counterparts?
Beta Latios and Latias I reckon. In line with the Latikin we saw in the scrapped art... It seems 'sightseeing' later became soaring.
7:52 Ah yes, Pokémon Sword & Shield, a classic Gen 6 game.
my mistake lol got my gens mixed up there for a moment
The artistic renderings were such a good touch. I hadn’t heard any of this before
Thanks! Yeah I paid an artist to do these. He did a very good job!
The Pokémon beta games are truly an enigmatic an interesting mystery that always is a great topic of investigation.
That they are. Really wasn't expecting Ruby and Sapphire to go this neck deep in the mystery that was unravelled here
generally scrapped beta helps you understand the thoughts of graphics designers.
We makin out the drawing board with this one 🗣🔥
Testing stage?
@@TheObsessiveGamer yea wrong word “drawing board “
That foster pokemon is really interesting. Real big cats have actually been observed exhibiting this behavior in cerrain situations. Particularly the adopting a random species thing. Then scrapping this detail between the earlier snd later dex entries could be a big reaspn why the Pokemon was scrapped altogether. If the whole point was to represent this phenomenon in nature but it was deemed too questionable to include this detail, they might have felt the line had lost it's purpose.
oh that's a good point. Yeah I can see that being a major reason why it was dropped. Shame since it's a really neat idea
The sprinkler is lotat, it was also the design for the watering can in gen3
A lot of the drawing looked cool, if they looked close to them, it would have been cool to have them
The artist did an amazing job on these and their interpretation. I personally would be very happy if they looked like yhosey
The 2nd design is glemeow, the tail matches the description 😀 it was just changed from a cheetah like for the fast speed to a cat
The early Shellos seems to have traits from both variants that eventually appeared in DP. The bumpy Gastrodon is really weird though.
If you enjoy this video, give it a like to assist us with the algorithim!
Update notes:
-accidently said Impidimp is Gen 6 instead of Gen 8
Done Mr. Gamer, I trust my life and soul unto you
@@higginswalsan haha that's too much responsibility lol thanks for like!
Imp pokemon in gen 8 not 6
@@nessdbest8708 I know... I got my gens mixed up
That Bird that could repel the clouds and reveal the sun looks very similar to Staraptor.
I’m sure the next time we get leaks the hackers are going to leak them with the beta sprites so we can finally see what the cut RSE Pokémon will look like 😅
We need it to happen again already the beta leak was so peak
@@ajtriforcegamerofhyrule8538 It was and still great
the small oni pokemon that absorbs electricity with its horn sounds like a member of the Electabuzz line, which may explain why it was scrapped if it was deemed too similar to Elekid
Electabuzz may not be an imp, but I did instantly notice the similarities. I can see this being a major reason
11:35
Its likely it was repurposed as Archen.
Rock/Flying
Its more than likely they just reused the art asset for Grovyle and made a new one for later gens.
It's likely the cut dragonfly is a different starter line for Flygon, though Yanmega being added a gen later could also be a good point. We do know that they speculated on Gen 3 and 4 being "ultimate pokemon" and having comprehensive generational coverage, so by that logic we could also argue Mamoswine was planned for gen 3 and they ran out of room. Gen 4 dex as a whole had a lot of leftover pokemon from previous gens.
Missingno. did have a dex entry at one time, but only in the Japanese versions of Pokemon Blue and Yellow, with the dex simply stating "comment to be written". The text wasn't translated in any localization, which is why you get a completely broken, glitchy entry in those versions.
The Flower pokemon may have been a beta version of Ralts, since it is also said to read human emotions or minds and Wally's family is from Verdanturf town, which has a lot of vegetation and large flower patches next to it. Plus, Ralts' legs seem almost stuck to the ground and its whole line has a very plant-like green color, which may be a leftover from early designs as a plant/psychic pokemon.
10:14
There's but one Pokemon that fits that description: "Latiken"
Also, the Dragonfly Pokemon has to be Beta Yanmega from DP's beta, and
Shrub > Water Moss (both their descriptions line up with each other).
I would say it is possible, but this guy is described to have horns. Latiken doesn't have horns
@@TheObsessiveGamer The back of its head. It doesn't have to be generic horns (as shown in that mock-up design).
@@NorthSutherland I took that more as a tuft of feathers much like the final Latias and Latios
@@TheObsessiveGamer Maybe, but the description matches what was essentially beta Latias all too well. And we still don't know what the "Cockfight" Pokemon was supposed to look like.
@@NorthSutherland The description is pretty generic tbh outside the horn we aren't told much else and most flying Pokemon are capable of giving flight too. I don't feel this is enough to point Latikento this one.
I personally think Latiken was simply the beta design of either Latias or Blaziken back then before finalized
It should be noted that in the unused music thats of gen 2 songs there are only ever about 4 instruments/channels playing at once, the same amound of channels that could be played at once on the gb/gbc (2 pulse wave tracks, 1 wave sample track, and a noise channel). The gba was capable of playing more channels than just four at once with many of the songs in the game taking full advantage of this. I believe all of this adds further credibility to the possibility of those gen 2 songs just being ported over for testing and placeholder purposes.
Combo moves would have been CRAZY! It would have added so much depth to the combat system. I think they scrapped it because of how unlikely people would have been to use them since they took so much setup. I seem to recall the anime trying using a type of combo-system with characters training their pokemon together strengthening their bond.
Makes me wonder if they took influence from the anime on that? But yeah double battles also not being proven may be another factor I imagine
@@TheObsessiveGamer at the time I'm sure they were focused on singles. Weird how doubles dominates the comp scene today, eh.
@@maliciousfry do they dominate now? Been out of the competitive scene for a decade now, so that's quite a change if so
@@TheObsessiveGamer VGC (the official pokemon tournament) uses doubles, yeah.
@@maliciousfry oooh right official tourneys are way more prevalent nowadays as opposed to those old Smogon tourneys I use to go to
But honestly, good :)
There actually were e-Reader cards released for that room. My brother and I each got a card with our copies of the game, and I bought a pack of those cards at a store that was basically a GameStop (and eventually became an actual GameStop). They even had another different pack of those cards at the store.
I don't think "No special ability." was really meant to be had by a Pokemon. It was likely always meant as a "blank" placeholder, similar to how all move index lists start with "--" as the first "move", or all Gens have a placeholder "Pokemon" that shows up when you try to call Pokemon number 0.
Hawk and Sightseeing Sound like a very early idea of Latias and Latios.
Agreed, and "sightseeing" sounds like a soaring feature.
8:25 I was thinking it looks like a bulbasaur. "Looks like a new take on Gloom" damn ok that too lol
I meant as in the stink factor, not the literal design lol
The Archeopteryx pokémon at timestamp 11:30 seems like a beta Archeops, maybe?
It might have influenced it later, but the direct Pokemon is believed to have directly become Grovyle due to the Pokedex entries being similar
With both Treeko & Torchic being different makes u wonder if Mudkip was like them & had a different design too or if it was the same.
It was probably a rework of the beta Wooper in the gen 2 scrap pile- Spaceworld '99.
There was a different design for it, but just the crest on its head and was very similar
So wild idea, but what if the sight seeing pokemon was the Blazikin Latias fusion we know off. Its description would fit it
Latiken lacks a horn is where the description wouldn't fit I say.
i always enjoy watching your videos after a day at work or even sometimes when i’m working. keep up the good work!
Thanks man! Glad I can be a comfort TH-camr like that :)
Wow, Roggenrola, Archeops, so many Gen 5 Pokemon came from here it seems. How interesting.
The mendel palace character always reminds me of Buchu, the first opponent in Konami's arcade game Yie Ar Kung Fu
These videos really scratch the dr. Lava itch. I miss his videos but the obsessive gamer goes really in depth. Older Pokémon game’s unused content is always so nostalgic. Feels like we’re seeing missing parts of history.
Thanks! Dr. Lava was somewhat an inspiration for when I did first begin this series back in 2020 here. So i'm glad to have been filling in that void :)
this is actually rlly cool I never or barely knew anything about this, you need more subs with this kind of info !!
Thank you! Hopefully i can lol
Hey! Great job on all your proto-pokemon videos, I'm really enjoying them :D I might want to say the "sightseeing" pokemon is in fact Latiken, at least that was the general impression when the leak came out, it has horns and it's shown as a ride pokemon,
WTF. All the beta cut Pokemon from Gen 2 and 3 recently are more awesome than the final products. Very well done video.
I like the other Rose pokemon and could have been another pair like Plusle and Minun or Volbeat and Illumise. Also chimecho was the last gen 3 pokemon programmed into the Hoenn games even after Deoxys & Jirachi so perhaps its final design was very last minute
I do theorize that maybe Chimeco might have even replaced Spirit. Despite not being a ghost, it even appears at Mt. Pyre
Chimeco was deleted from the game during development but added back last second
@@bewearstar9462 interesting. Would really love to see the history of Chimeco from a dev standby. Bet there is fun story there
13:57 worth noting that Rayquaza is based on the Aztec deity Quetzalcoatl (known also as "the feathered serpent" who has an association with wind and the colour white, among many other things). i think this may have been a more straightforward first draft of that, but i like your theories about its origins and the original art of it!
Taking the wooper doll from us is a CRIME
"insane Speed of a cheetah"
50 meters in 7 seconds = 25kph. Is slower than fucking humans running.
I think you may have your facts mixed. Cheetahs can do 70 miles per hour vs Usain Bolt who can do 27
@@TheObsessiveGamer The Pokedex entry you showed at 5:05 says it can run 50m in 7 seconds. That's only 25.7kph or about 16mph... not very fast. A 7s 50m sprint is not an unusual feat for athletic humans.
@@reolives ohhh you mean in-game. Well yeah I see what you mean. Tbh I know they were trying to make it sound fast , but I can imagine being that this was in development that they got the info wrong lol
@@TheObsessiveGameryes yes i was laughing about the dex entry, at First I was "oh nice, 50m in 7 seconds" then "wait... That's worse than 10m/s and that's 36km/h"😂
The imp thing is the toxic/electric thing from sword and shield
It does sound a lot like Toxel. And has sound based evolutions... Cacophony would make a ton of sense for it.
And it would have looked sooo good in gen 3 style too....
Actually Rayquaza had a different name named Tychoon and it is interestingly listed as white in the source as well in some of the data.
The Everlasting summer Pokémon looks like Bellossom.
Lots of influences here and there I guess lol
Dude I’m baffled no one has mentioned it looking strikingly like maractus and even more with its loudness bc that’s maractus’s motif
At 2:18 it seems that you missed some VO. It's just silence then cuts in mid-sentence
Yeah a technical error happened on export. Was too late by the time I noticed. Not much was missed there thankfully. Sorry about that though
11:47 the archeopteryx Pokémon? That would have to be yet another early gen 5 mon, Archen and Archeops. I mean it's in the name lol
Cacknea is the moss Pokemon
Yellow flower on head bad smell bc it's a cactus
12:14
How could you not mention Archen and Archeops here?
archeopteryx or however may have been the inspiration for archeops line (same dinosaur fossil) and hawlucha. also dont forget flygon and vibrava are dragonflies. they may be their beta designs. also good thing they scrapped the name cacophony, it made no sense.
Around timestamp 12:55 they put the wrong Ruby entry on screen, putting up the Dragonfly Pokémon's Ruby entry again.
Oh whoops typo, sorry about that! 4am editing does that ;;
Impidimp (gen 8) not 6
@@swipeslogjack_tgaming9472 yeah sorry, got my gens mixed up
@@TheObsessiveGamer just poking fun my g
that one pokemon you said looked like gloom resembles a mossy Bulbasaur
Not resemble, just a new take on the stink factor lol
One these days were gonna see the leaked sprites and data for Gen 3 and then see some pokemon that were likely planned but made it to Gen 4 instead since that Gen didn't have any scrapped Betamons this makes my theory true i hope.
I like "Foster" a lot. For one thing, it's funny because big cats usually seek out young animals as prey but this one decides to adopt kids by force if it doesn't have one of its own. Also, it reminds me of that one real-life lioness who had a cub that died so it would adopt baby animals that it would otherwise see as prey and try to raise them in the cub's place. But it never worked for long and they usually got picked off by other lions, so that's too bad.
This is a masterpiece
Thank you! :)
I really love your videos!
Thank you!
"Combine two moves to attack back to back"
Sounds kinda like what they did in PMD with link moves.
Eccellent video as always❤ not sure why you have so few subscribers yet
Thanks! I sometimes wonder that too (though 28k isn't anything to scoff at lol) hope the channel explodes one day
@@TheObsessiveGamerabsolutely nothing to scoff at, but man, i Always forgot how Little community you have for the quality of your videos. Let alone the art you made in this video Is worth 100000 subs minimum
I always felt as if the front hopping bike was made for if the mache bike were to come to a hard stop. The front wheel may have had "breaks" like many bikes do (front and back, usually) so the bike would still maintain a "momentum" so it would likely tip forward?
Idk
I always like learning more
I like to teach at that :3
@ TheObsessiveGamer you are a true legend thank you for your hard work and dedication I learn something new every time :)
Thank you! this one especially took a lot of blood, sweat and tears to get through lol
Agreed I'm still hoping we get a prototype one day@@TheObsessiveGamer
the lottery pkmn maybe is a beta version of silcoon/coscoon before they choose to make it a 3 stage pkmn
Gimmighoul
I remember being angry that they didn't include a second region in Gen 3.
Good times.
Yeah I remember alot of us were mad at that time to the point where we datamined the game to see if it was just hidden...and it wasn't lol
The electric imp guy would've been so cool to have
50 meters in 7 seconds is not that fast. I ran the 100 meter dash in 12 seconds in high school, and I was only an average sprinter.
Yeah it isn't, though being in development, I am thinking they probably hadn't done a proper fact check and thought this was fast
8:00 Impidimp was gen 8
whoops got my gens mixed up. Thanks!
7:48
Impidimp is from Gen. 8, not 6.
Great video
Thank you!
8:11
Water Moss looks like a Hoenian Bulbasoar.
I feel like Everlasting Summer “could” have been a really early idea for Maractus with its thorny temperament, name, and being noisy in groups. Maybe they could repurpose Water Moss into a convergent or regional form for the Bulbasaur line. Also I like the “evolves” at a random level idea. Maybe you only obtain it at level 1 and each one evolve at a random level between 2 and 100. Obviously its evolution would be strong. Thing again this could either be feast or famine in a playthrough.
Around 12:00 isn't there literally a rock flying fossil like pokemon called archeops? Definitely not grovyle lol, fun video though
You aren't wrong that there is one that came later BUT the reason this is Grovyle as we stated in the video is because Grovyles beta dex entry is the same as this one's.
@TheObsessiveGamer ah gotcha! I was listening while working and just heard rock/flying archeopteryx and Grovyle and was thinking "waaaaait a second" in any case, thanks for your investigative skills 🙂
@@MegaSpides ahhh fair lol well thank you for enjoying the video!
#3 is cherim sun form
Could the Sightseeing Pokémon perhaps be the Latias/Blaziken hybrid? It has horns and the artwork shows it carrying a human on its back.
Great video like always. For future reference "timbre" is pronounced more like "tamber"
When did I say timbre?

I don't know why I always think the front wheelie sprite was meant for the mach bike. Like you would do a cartoon style front wheelie whenever you stop moving with mach bike.
I mean that's why one is the opposite of the other. Fast vs Cool
@@TheObsessiveGamer Yeah, maybe because the bike only had 1 set of speed, they think doing a front wheelie to a stop everytime you use mach bike was too much and scrapped it. Or maybe it was used whenever you hit a wall with your bike.
@@blameitondanny imagine crashing and nearly flipping out of your bike like that every time lol
@@TheObsessiveGamer I would love that tbh but I can see doing the animation everytime gonna get boring real fast.
@@blameitondanny It actually kinda reminds me of the crash animation they had planned for Sonic in Sonic 1 as well. If this was the case, I imagine they may have removed it for the same reason lol
That moss pokemon resembles Shiny Ivysaur
my most favorite game of all time
the pokemon @6:10 looks more like Bellossom
The fact that they discarded those Pokémon is a freaking crime
If Gamefreak was planning on including another time capsule to transfer over older Pokemon to Ruby/Sapphire, isn’t it possible that those older Pokemon could have had the "No Ability" ability as they originally didn't have abilities?
Quite possibly? Though I imagine they'd at least default the Pokemon that transfer over to their base abilities at least
Older Pokémon from where?
@@enoyna1001 Gen 1 and 2
