Milk Drink/Soft-boiled was definitely very useful in Gen 3. Reduced the time needed to go back and forth to heal. Once the cleric is low HP, just send it out against a wild Poke and heal in battle.
I did this with Smeargle and Recycle in terms of Leppa Berry. Edit: You can also just use any Pokémon with Recover and Recycle up to the Elite 4. I personally used Porygon.
It was a neat idea in theory, but the fact that you had to waste precious move slots on moves that are, with few exceptions, extremely weak is was pretty bad design and HM's were honestly obnoxious. Field moves that aren't HMs are fine enough though.
@@Robbie_Haruna Yeah, a lot of people felt the same way. And instead of trying to find an actual solution-- like, say, buffing the moves so they'd be worth using up a move slot-- Game Freak just got rid of them. They swept the problem under the rug instead of fixing it. Besides, I've NEVER needed all four of my Pokemon's move slots to make it through the game. In my opinion, anyone who thinks you do either sucks at the game or is WAY too obsessed with efficiency.
@TheEmeraldWeirdo It's not a matter of difficulty. It's a matter of an already limiting system (four move slots,) being limited even farther because HM's are bad, and unless you're playing Gen 5, they're constantly needed to progress in dungeons. They can't just "buff," the moves simply because shit like Cut and Rock Smash would become early game nukes if they were made to be actually good. Dive and Fly are fundamentally flawed (though Fly is at least servicable in the main game,) Strength is only kind of decent (and rendered obsolete by many other Normal Type moves, and Surf and Waterfall are just all around good. In general, even if the moves were all made "good," there's a fundamental problem with the type overlap on these that actively would get in the way of smart team building. Most games have two or three water type HMs, 2 or 3 normal type ones is normal, one fighting and one flying. The variety just isn't there enough to make these work well by eating up a sizable chunk of move slots(still not sure how Rock Climb was a normal type move). If GameFreak was smart, they would just allow the usage of the moves on the field once you have the HM and the necessary Gym badge so long as something on your team can learn it, without actually needing to teach the move, the HM system was badly designed, but there were other alternatives than just dropping it entirely.
@@Robbie_Haruna Buffing them COULD work without making them overpowered, you just need to change the usual order of obtaining them. For instance, making Flash--a non-damaging move--the first HM instead of Cut or Rock Smash would allow you to make them stronger without handing the player a broken move. My personal ideas are to boost Rock Smash's power to 60 and reduce the chance of a Defense drop, and turning Cut into a 70 power Steel-type move with a high crit rate. So if the order of the first three HMs is Flash->Rock Smash->Cut, that would be a more or less balanced progression. And I agree that Rock Climb being a Normal-type move is weird. It should really be a Rock-type move. And the current movepool system would lend itself very well to bringing back field moves. They could make it so that a Pokemon can use a learned field move outside of battle even if it's not in their current moveset.
I think a "Field Move slot" would have fixed MOST of the problems with field moves. Like a move slot designated solely for learning field moves, a slot you don't get access to during battles. You could still put Field moves in your Regular, battle moves slots if you wanted too, but if you also had the option of a field move only slot, that would be great.
I always felt like field moves were a much more interesting and natural way to progress through the region than methods in other RPGs that feel much more forced. Like using a key item doesn’t feel as cool as your Pokémon using an already existing mechanic (ie moves) to help progress. Too bad most hms were awful in battle so people hated them
@@Vaughngn Especially back when the fighting type was dying to get good moves. Remember in Gen 2 when Heracross needed HP fighting to run a decent fighting stab? I think it's a symptom of gamefreak overestimating certain effects. 'Oh, it has a chance to lower defense, so the base power HAS to be below 60 to compensate, otherwise, it'd be broken!"
I guess it was to prevent you from just using them on every pokemon for battle. Keep some variety. Why bother with regular moves when you have an infinite supply of good teachable attacks.
@@LeviathanRX Your right. That makes a lot of sense. Though, they could have made hm's kinda sort decent, but make the real good shit expandable. Who knows.
Finding out about that soft-boiled effect was genuinely surprising after all this time! And I t’s not just useful, it also supports the lore of why Chansey are the primary Pokemon Center Pokemon because they naturally have the ability to heal others! Very cool fun fact to discover
It’s funny how I didn’t realize these moves were stripped off their effects in new generations. I guess they weren’t so relevant to me if I didn’t feel the change right away, but looking back they did add a certain charm to the game that I miss.
I cannot believe I've played Gen 6 for 500+ hours, and only now I'm finding out Flash zooms out the camera. 13yr old me would've been spamming that in every cave to look for secrets throughout the game. You've got some solid videos, subbing to keep an eye on how much polish you add to your editing and writing. Also, that chatot joke got a laugh from me, I can't lie!
Thank you! And yeah honestly I only remember vaguely learning about the camera zoom once before, years ago, and I'm sure most players simply got the TM for Flash and left it unused in their bag and finished the cave up normally, what a weird feature to have in one game and never bring back!
I only found out a week ago replaying X, and I was shocked out of my mind. It’s so much more comfortable to play with the extended vision 😭 the rest of the game feels so cramped now!
Gen 1's choice of TM's is absurd when you look at some of them. You mentioned Softboiled being only learned by Chansey and Mew but Egg Bomb is the same with Exeggcute and Exeggutor added in. Dream Eater was only learned by the Gengar Line, Hypno Line, and Mew. I could only be thankful that this method of TM choices is no longer in place or else we'd have our reusable Judgement TM for Arceus.
It makes more sense when you consider that the Move Relearner wasn't introduced until Gen 3. If you accidentally erased a move, those TMs would be the only way to relearn those signature moves.
one of my favorite little weird things about XY is that specific moves can knock items down from trees on routes or stalagmites/stalagtites in caves. like those berry trees on routes with the berries that are too high up to reach, are actually in the background of battles and can be knocked down with air cutter or twister
I've played Pokémon games since 1999 and I didn't know that Soft-Boiled had that effect when used in the overworld until I watched this video. So... Thanks!
As annoying as they could be, I miss HMs being mandatory because they forced you to have one member of the team who wasn't entirely combat oriented. Players wouldn't normally bother with training up a Bidoof but if they need Bibarel to be their go-to team member for cut, surf, strength & rock smash they might keep it in their party for the whole game. I like that a pokemon can still be very valuable even if combat isn't their forte.
Sweet Scent is one way to keep catching Pokes in Safari Zone in areas only reachable via Mach Bike (meaning you can't use the Acro Bike to hop on the grass).
If you quickly tap a direction other than the one you are facing, you will stay on the same tile (so you will not roll the step counter), however you can encounter a pokemon as if you had walked a tile. So you dont need sweet scent. The easiest way to do this is find a grass tile in a corner and rapidly mash the direction of the two walls.
Sweet Scent can be quite useful on Gen 2, as it starts the battle immediatelly, there's no animation or anything. If you're grinding for something, it can save you a considerable time. I kept it on my Venusaur, it even made sense on a battle perspective, as it helped Sleep Powder to connect easier. At the time, I tried to make a team that included all the HMs and useful Field Moves.
I really dont mind HMs being gone, like at all. Yeah, it's imersive and in concept is neat, but fill your pokemon moveset with (normaly) underwhelming moves or caring one or even two pokemon JUST for passing certain areas, some of them being obligatory, was kind of an unecessary feature to have (no, move deleters does'nt make it better.) I like TM efects way more bc, it's a neat feature to be in the game, they serve their purpose well, and more important, they'r completaly optional. I would like if they expand in these with the emd of HMs insted of erase them too.
i think since it’s shown that soft boiled and milk drink can be used on other pokémon that they should be able to be used on adjacent partners in doubles
@@dellnquent No, it isn't the same thing as using Flash, but if you talk to Pikachu when it knows Thunderbolt while traversing a dark cave the zone will be illuminated for a brief moment during the animation, every time. Also true if it knows Thunder.
I remember when i was a kid playing Diamond and Pearl, I had a Blissey on my team and would use their Soft Boiled as potions for my Infernape because it was cheaper than buying potions :')
i'd like to see some aspects of HMs or field moves to return, but without them being mandatory for story progression. Or even tie the action to a type instead. small bush blocking access to a side area of the forest? a Bug pokemon could eat through it, or maybe a pokemon with a "cutting" move. a high-up object you want to reach? Flying or Psychic can help (this is actually an NPC interaction in XY). if we keep the open-world model for future games, things like these would make great points of interest that SV is currently sorely lacking. it helps people have more reason to vary their team, if only for a moment as they look through their boxes to answer the puzzle in front of them.
Funnily enough, I feel like HMs could almost come back wholesale and people wouldn't be anywhere near as bothered by them as in the older games. Purely because we can access our PC boxes while out and about, plus the more free moveset adjusting in the modern games. Like, the big problem was either having to teach your Pokemon (typically) bad moves or have an HM user or 2 handy, leaving out your party Pokemon for potentially long stretches so they can get you through. Free access to PC boxes and more freely adjustable movesets would make the biggest problem a bit of menuing every now and then.
I got a suggestion for your videos: Please experiment with turning off the speed-up mode for emulator footage used in background footage. For something like challenge-run supercuts, it's fine, as it supports fast story narration. But as a background for slower-paced narration showing supporting tables, over-world overviews, etc, I personally find it jarring and hectic, moving the viewer focus away from the content you want to display towards the slightly blurred and fast-moving background. The same style of (background) footage (i.e. running around, start surfing, the party screen with attack selection) work the same at 100% speed, without introducing that much in-your-face-blinking.
I think Field moves are way more interesting than HMs. As optional mechanics that flesh out your pokemon and give them utility other than fighting. The problem with HMs is that they are required, which just leads to having an HM slave or forcing your other pokemon to learn moves you don't like that much
Funny story about softboiled Gen 1. When I was maybe 8, that was the first time I beat the elite 4. I distinctly remember where I was (at a cultural show with my family). I was right before lance and couldn't beat him, kept losing and I was running low on money so I kept resetting (stupid me didn't realize I could just keep beating lorelai and them and get cash for more items). The big one were ethers and elixers, I had one left and I was all out of health and revives. Long story short, I pulled through against the champion after using an elixer on blastoise and he ran through the champion team with arcanine and jolteon. Super lucky. Next was the 151 pokemon journey, chansey was one of the last pokemon I needed to finish the pokedex (I hated the safari zone). Eventually, I wanted to do a safari zone elite 4 run after I got the 151 -so Taurus, scyther, chansey, etc. I was once again low on health and revives by the time I got to the champion. That's when I found out about softboil by chance because I wanted to check my pokemons pp. To my surprise, I soft softboil as an option, used it on chansey recovered health. Used the last one on my Taurus ran through the champion once again...
Part of me always hoped that these wouldve been reworked and expanded. The idea of your own party of pokemon being able to give you some utility outside of battle was always super cool IMO, and it was only really the clunky way they hindered battles (taking up an essential move slot) that was a problem. Imagine if every pokemon just had a fifth move/ability separate from their normal movepool solely dedicated to this, so that at any given time you could have up to 6 field moves without the hassle of HMs taking up move slots. Heck, imagine if a system like this was carried over into legends arceus, and when you threw out a pokemon it could perform it's field move right there and then instead of every pokemon being functionally identical on the field.
I'll always remember getting Heracross from using Headbutt back in Gold/Silver when I was super young. Still one of my favorite Pokémon to this day! Awesome video!
Replacing the HMs with organic progression systems was a good change, but I miss the ability to use other field moves outside of battle. The field move functionality could be expanded, too - imagine if you could control an area's weather with Rain Dance as a field move to encounter different Pokemon. There's a lot of cool things they could do with this feature.
i certainly think that field moves should make a return in the traditional sense because having your own pokemon aid you on your adventures is cool, maybe not replace moveslots (although im not opposed to putting HMs in moveslots) but maybe as innate/passive like how you can ride certified pokemons if you let them out of the ball in Let’s Go and like how they pick up items and smash rocks in PLA, but make it apply for all sorts of moves, like if you let umbreon out to follow you it can glow at night / in caves… having us use & ride our own pokemon will be a true major step also great video! i just subscribed!
Pokémon Scarlet and Violet have HMs that unlock new field abilities for traversing the overworld. It’s just that it doesn’t stand for Hidden Machine anymore.
What about dive and waterfall whilepool was also a attack they was moves before hms. They was learnable too, even the move defog was turned to similar mechanics
Fair point with those, I should probably have clarified in the BDSP section that all the HMs being usable in BDSP as TMs means they're technically all non-HM field moves in those games!
I'd love Field Moves that didn't do anything except play an animation. Like... imagine if there was a move that, aside from being usable in battle, made one of your Pokémon pop out of its ball and do a little backflip.
Random things I was hoping to hear (not a big deal, I know not every video can have every little detail), but I was hoping Cut's non-primary effect would get in here-- it feels like it fits, you know? But ALSO, the Honey and Escape Rope items, which basically made the transition away from field moves doable because the most unique effects were already preserved in usable items!
One of my fav parts of soft boiled is you can use it to save your potions since you minimize the wasted potion points by using your soft boiled pokemon as a healing buffer where you heal all pokemon with soft boiled and only heal the soft boiled user with the potions. this is only really useful when youre stripped for cash or are in a bind like the E4 but you feel like a savvy business man when you do this.
@@nunyabiznes33 buddy you are a fucking genius and thats why we pay you the big bucks. TBF the place where i used this the most was in the E4 to save potions BUT anywhere else you can scum that, i hope i remember this next time i have a softboiled/milk drink user
Field moves and HMs kinda make sense more as innate moves or effects pokemon can produce. If a pokemon could flash, or has learned/been taught flash once, they always can.
I miss having party members interact with the overworld… I feel like it would be easy to reimplement by having a seperate “skill” TM that doesn’t take up a move slot, designating a flyer, surfer, etc. Maybe a fun side quest to learn to tutor the moves would be cool. Having random taxis and stuff just feels very braindead to me and takes away the adventure. Also having multiple options like teleport being readjusted to work exactly like fly would mean you aren’t as restricted by type in team building. You could add so many more fun skills like this for your team to interact with the map in a way you enjoy? Eg, some Rock types could scale ledges and walls, Ice types could make for super fast navigation of caves, dark types could lure or bait the highest level cap pokemon in an area, there’s so many interesting ways overworld mechanics could be brought back
I recently replayed Red Version and had forgotten how much the older games feel more real. HMs and field moves trained your pokemon skills like youd train a horse to jump over an obstacle while riding, or an ox to move a heavy object, or even a dog to fetch. It was a way to interact with nature in the game that didn't feel magical. Storage of items and pokemon took planning and care. Resources, whether it be storage, money, or items, were finite and had to be rationed. The little difficulties you experienced made the game believable, relatable. Even with the fantastical creatures inhabiting the Kanto region, it was all down to earth enough for me to imagine I could be the one wearing the ball cap. The plot didn't move forward because of mythical creatures. You progressed because you and your team made it happen. The world was not at stake. You beat the Elite Four because you wanted to be the champion. You completeld the pokedex because you wanted to catch em all. Everything was attainable as long as you trusted your team and kept a curious mind open to adventure.
It's why BD is my last pokemon game. I couldn't finish it. It was too easy, I could train my whole team at once, I can catch fully evolved pokemon immediately, etc. So much is spoon fed. I still vaguely remember coming across articuno by chance in seafoam Islands and had to restart the entire cave because I didn't save and I wasn't prepared to catch a legendary Or when my friend told me where to finally find zapdos since I didn't know you had to surf around rock tunnel to the power plant. Or spending hours trying to find a way to push the cart near ss Anne to get mew. Or being forced to either buy two copies of the game or trading with friends to get the trade evolutions and version exclusive Pokémon. When we found out Pokémon could be version exclusive, when Gen 2 came out we had a Pokémon battle to figure out who was gonna get gold and who was gonna get silver (we both wanted gold obviously). I lost but I got crystal instead since my cousin bought the game as a surprise It was all these moments that made us fall in love with the game and even 20 years later Gen 1 and 2 still have surprises!
always found field moves, HM or otherwise to be such an underrated aspect of party development. feels so good to have your party be useful and part of the experinece beyond battle, and the headache of juggling HMs and moveset building was a fun challenge. Good video, looking forward to more
6:13 It is also important to mention that XY introduced a new mechanic were certain moves could destroy parts of the battle arena and give you some extra items. Not necessarily an overworld mechanic, but it kinda feels like one. 7:30 I kinda wish they brought some of those back same with ability effects... Miltank/Chansey/Gogoat only healing Challenges are fun.
I forgot all about that! It is a neat added feature X and Y had, even if it's not on the field it's definitely different from almost anything else we have seen
I'd like field moves to return, but they should be in a separated moveset. It's cool to use your team to travel through the region, but having to devote two team members to them is not practical.
Nice video! Very straight to the point yet very informative! I think it could be fun to have a video on abilities that have outside of battle effects like Flame Body :]
There actually are still “field moves, you just can’t access them through the moves menu. Like how “suction cups” makes your fishing casts always land a fish etc. more a field ability but still functions the way a field move would.
@@Jeffeffery9. I said “suction cups” do you not know how examples work. Another good example would be how flame body hatched eggs faster in the field. Not a move but an ability but I find this to be the successor to field attacks.

Noted! I got this comment a few times so unless it's for brief moments with static images over it I plan to minimize blurred background video going forward In fact, my new video follows that principle! There's not too much of the blurred gameplay background except in the intro and in one small portion or two later on

Can you imagine the colossal game Pokémon could make if everything that eventually got scrapped during these years were reunited into aingle game with multiple regions? Even small things like that you focused on this video, I personally think, help to create a singular gameplay experience other franchises can only dream of. But nowadays everything is a gen only gimmick, and there's a new game every year because, y'know, mone's money. And everyone just buy it anyway. It's very sad to see an amzing franchise like that sink into itself like that. Also, great video! Straight to the point, amazing visuals and good writing. This video is covering just the moves that at some point were not HMs, Rock Climb was an HM in the games it's a field move, though I probably should have shown it off more or made a mention of it in the section for BDSP
I never knew about soft-boiled, what a crazy thing actually. Imagine being one of the lucky elementary school children that had a Chansey and using it in-between Elite 4 battles, nobody would believe you at all
I had ZERO idea you could use Flash to zoom out the camera in Gen 6. I guess that just leaves me with one question... WHY WOULDN'T THEY JUST GIVE ME THAT FIELD OF VISION BY DEFAULT? It's like locking quality of life features behind upgrades, very very stupid.
I looked at field moves the same as getting a special item or mode of transportation in an rpg... like getting access to the Enterprise in Final Fantasy. Too bad it took up a move slot.
Gonna see how many i can remember... Milk Drink and Softboiled share HP with the party, Chatter is technically a field move as you select it from the menu, Sweet Scent attracts Pokemon, Dig escapes the dungeon, Headbutt finds Pokemon in trees, Teleport takes you back to the Pokemon Center Also, the HM Cut has the optional use of cutting grass, and Flash is only sometimes an HM
That's indeed a neat interaction, but I didn't add it to the video it since it's technically not the move itself being used, just allowing a Pikachu who knows one of the moves to be talked to in Rock Tunnel to light it for a moment. Still, good observation!
I loved your video! It was an excellent topic I was interested to learn more about! And I appreciate how in-depth an explanation of each move you gave! If I could share a little feedback, the screen got a little busy with all the flashing colours with the gameplay in the background I subscribed and I'm excited to see what topics you cover next!
great vid but omg your backgrounds are way too flashy. You can't have multiple video clips in the background, at the same time, and constantly cut between them, in addition to the footage having a lot of transitions and menu uses on its own
I will take that into account for the next videos, thank you. I don't want to just do what I see a lot of other accounts do which is reuse the same looping backgrounds and it was what I thought of doing to be different, but I know it's something I will need to work on coming up with a solution for
Share your experiences with these moves in the comments!

Like using a key item doesn’t feel as cool as your Pokémon using an already existing mechanic (ie moves) to help progress. Too bad most hms were awful in battle so people hated them
It's always so funny to me how so many HMs suck but then Surf exists and is one of the best water STABs possible
They just needed all of them to have 70-95 power. I think we’d be fine with them. But rock smash at only 40 power sucked
I consider he was correct to say headbutt was a field move introduced in gen 2. It exists in gen 1 as a battle move but became a field move in gen 2
Wait what?!
I didn't know that, jeez.
Never knew that either
Oh yeah, the TM list is actually just kinda garbage in Gen 1!
Compatibility was also a bit weird. But lemme have my Solar Beam Lapras.
It makes more sense when you consider that the Move Relearner wasn't introduced until Gen 3. If you accidentally erased a move, those TMs would be the only way to relearn those signature moves.
@@Kamidio
Worse. Chansey can’t learn softboiled in Gen 1 without the TM. That’s right, it’s a move that 2 Pokemon can learn, and only via TM.
…Why?!
There were only 151 Pokémon at the time so widespread coverage didn’t really mean anything.
one of my favorite little weird things about XY is that specific moves can knock items down from trees on routes or stalagmites/stalagtites in caves. like those berry trees on routes with the berries that are too high up to reach, are actually in the background of battles and can be knocked down with air cutter or twister
A decade later and this is the first time I’m learning that flash expands the camera in gen 6. Those games still surprise me to this day
I've played Pokémon games since 1999 and I didn't know that Soft-Boiled had that effect when used in the overworld until I watched this video. So...
It's such a simple think but it's so refreshing to find a video that just starts on topic. No ads, no long preamble, straight to it. Appreciate it!
Field Moves (and HMs) were so cool because it felt like your Pokémon helped you explore the region
Field moves okay. Hms beside surf, no.
i think since it’s shown that soft boiled and milk drink can be used on other pokémon that they should be able to be used on adjacent partners in doubles
That would be a really cool idea to implement, kind of like a purely recovery-based Pollen Puff!
No joke, was pouring a glass of milk as I scrolled and read this. Thanks for leaving the coolest comment ever 🥛 👍
That's great, at least they're not useless in doubles.
Teleport is a handy field move to have before you learn Fly, you just need to plan out your pokemon center stops.
Absolutely! The early access in some games makes it a very nice move to have
In gen 6, Sweet Scent won't work in areas that rain a lot
Pikachu’s Thunderbolt in Pokemon Yellow can be used as Flash
is this true??
@@dellnquent No, it isn't the same thing as using Flash, but if you talk to Pikachu when it knows Thunderbolt while traversing a dark cave the zone will be illuminated for a brief moment during the animation, every time. Also true if it knows Thunder.
@@croma3375that's insane i loved when video games just did stuff like that. Like Lorelei's pokedolls if you beat the E4 25 times
Not just thunderbolt but thunder as well would also temporarily light up the screen
I remember when i was a kid playing Diamond and Pearl, I had a Blissey on my team and would use their Soft Boiled as potions for my Infernape because it was cheaper than buying potions :')
Actually a video on Secret bases would be fire as fuck.
also chatter wasnt usable out of battle in bdsp because the switch doesnt have a microphone (that being due to the original chatter)
i'd like to see some aspects of HMs or field moves to return, but without them being mandatory for story progression.
So basically, Field Moves from Pokemon Ranger? Because I have always said that that would be the best way to bring HMs back.
I had no idea they'd gotten rid of field moves. I've missed a lot in the development.
atp I stay replaying gens 3 4 5 it's better that way
Sweet scent's best use was to preserve steps in the Safari Zone.
Fire it up, and just change direction on the same tile until the Pokémon come to you.
I've been playing RBY since they came out, and been watching Poketubers for years. Never heard of Softboileds effect in Gen1! Great video.
Yeah me too! I was blown away by that, surprised I never heard of it after all this time and it seems so useful and in-character for Chansey
That's a nice idea. Reminds me of Defog's field effect. Kinda miss Fog, made no-miss moves useful for once.
Had no idea about Soft Boiled. Will keep that in mind in the future
I do miss field moves. HMs, I'm fine with being gone, but the overall concept of field moves were nice as a Bonus Thing
i certainly think that field moves should make a return in the traditional sense because having your own pokemon aid you on your adventures is cool, maybe not replace moveslots (although im not opposed to putting HMs in moveslots) but maybe as innate/passive like how you can ride certified pokemons if you let them out of the ball in Let’s Go and like how they pick up items and smash rocks in PLA, but make it apply for all sorts of moves, like if you let umbreon out to follow you it can glow at night / in caves… having us use & ride our own pokemon will be a true major step
also great video! i just subscribed!
Why even use potions on the Chansey? Just get into a wild battle and use Soft-boiled, then run away.
@@nunyabiznes33 buddy you are a fucking genius and thats why we pay you the big bucks. TBF the place where i used this the most was in the E4 to save potions BUT anywhere else you can scum that, i hope i remember this next time i have a softboiled/milk drink user
Sweet Scent was always my favorite lazy way to hunt shinies
Never knew soft boiled had an effect outside of battle and I'm playing since Pokemon Blue :o
Field moves and HMs kinda make sense more as innate moves or effects pokemon can produce. If a pokemon could flash, or has learned/been taught flash once, they always can.
I remember wishing all moves were usable on the field, namely so I could Flamethrower my way into the locked Cinnabar Island Gym.
You are blowing me away with all this knowledge!! And SO much fun to watch
Thanks so much! Hope you learned something!
Eg, some Rock types could scale ledges and walls, Ice types could make for super fast navigation of caves, dark types could lure or bait the highest level cap pokemon in an area, there’s so many interesting ways overworld mechanics could be brought back
Great vid! I can’t believe you don’t have more subs yet. Keep up the good work!
it's rare that i'm surprised by a mechanic in pokemon, but i had no idea that softboiled and milk drink were field moves!! thanks for the info
Well researched and high quality video! Hope your channel gets the views it deserves on day!
Justice for Chatot
Dude you're editing is insane. Chill out on the blurred background while sped up. And the flashing lights.
I still vaguely remember coming across articuno by chance in seafoam Islands and had to restart the entire cave because I didn't save and I wasn't prepared to catch a legendary
Or when my friend told me where to finally find zapdos since I didn't know you had to surf around rock tunnel to the power plant.
I lost but I got crystal instead since my cousin bought the game as a surprise
It was all these moments that made us fall in love with the game and even 20 years later Gen 1 and 2 still have surprises!
I found this through the TH-cam algorithm. This is pretty interesting thank you! I hope you keep it up :)
waterfall was originally not HM but seakings signature move. and gained its ability in gen 3
always found field moves, HM or otherwise to be such an underrated aspect of party development. feels so good to have your party be useful and part of the experinece beyond battle, and the headache of juggling HMs and moveset building was a fun challenge.
Pokemon yellow was my favorite game as a kid, and I never knew about soft boiled.
I like that idea! I'll put it on my file of videos I'd like to make!
Flash zooming out the camera in Gen 6 is really cool
There actually are still “field moves, you just can’t access them through the moves menu. Like how “suction cups” makes your fishing casts always land a fish etc. more a field ability but still functions the way a field move would.
examples ?
@@Jeffeffery9. I said “suction cups” do you not know how examples work. Another good example would be how flame body hatched eggs faster in the field. Not a move but an ability but I find this to be the successor to field attacks.
@remyoconnor3141 Hi - thanks for your response. Your tone seems a little pointed, which I don't understand since I didnt know what you were talking about and was asking for examples. See: the burden of proof. I do actually know how examples work; the problem is you have still failed to provide an adequate example. Your comment refers to field moves, whereas Suction Cups is an ability. Maybe you could work on your own semantics before you want to get snippy with a stranger.
Take care of yourself and take it easy
this a *fantastically* scripted and edited video, really surprised to see this from a small creator! definitely earned my subscribe!
I really love the fact that you used generation-specific music when talking about the moves of said gens. 👌👌
other fun fact, despite becoming a TM instead of an HM in generation 5, the item icon for TM94 Rock Smash continued to resemble an HM
I think that using cut to cut grass should have entered this video
I wasn't sure if I should, as Cut being able to cut grass has been in the same games as Cut being an HM, but I see a good argument why it should have been in here since that feature is a small side thing that falls closer to this topic. Good catch!
I mean the title says non-hm field moves lol
Another fun fact is that if a Pokémon with the hyper cutter ability uses cut, the range of grass that you can cut is increased
@@joshisgarageyea but it has an effect outside its HM use so that’s why is probably also worth a mention
@@speedinturtle00I believe that you can't use Cut to pass the lawn mower before obtaining the required badge to use the HM, so it's also an HM use. Why should we make distinctions?
Constructive feedback for your future video making. This video was nice and informative, but having a blurry gameplay image playing with no foreground even for a brief moment can really bother some people's eyes. I'm not sure if there's a word for it but I can't look at a blurry image and have my eyes not try to focus, and it ends up giving me a headache and forcing me to look away.
Noted! I got this comment a few times so unless it's for brief moments with static images over it I plan to minimize blurred background video going forward
In fact, my new video follows that principle! There's not too much of the blurred gameplay background except in the intro and in one small portion or two later on
@@AzureFlute Thanks! I subscribed to make sure I don't miss any.
I'm not sure if this happens in other games, but in gen 3 using Sweet Scent fails to work if used on a cave's entrance tile.
My chatot cry was me loudly farting.
I used him all the way through the Elite 4.
Great video, man! This video is greatly appreciated by me because it's a topic I've wondered about for quite a while but was too lazy to look up! Overall, I really enjoy the format of your videos! Keep up the great work! And have a good one!
I played 999:59 hours of my X and never knew Flash zoomed out while inside the cave 😂😂😂
Didnt knew secret power had that option outside of battle. Makes sense but never realized it.
i really didn't like how they removed hm moves in later gens cuz i really like thinking of which pokemon to have the hm and then not use it the rest of the game since hms couldn't be forgotten, this was one thing that bothered me down the line
this guy needs more subscribers
it should be noted that Sweet Scent was introduced in Gen I as a battle and field move - i use it all the time on my Oddish lineup to get those Abra so i can use Mew glitch asap.
interesting topic! keep making videos like this i didnt know about soft boiled or milk drink thats really cool :)
Never knew flash in X&Y increased your field of view.
I might be mistaken but, didn't we forget about Rock Climb? It was used to go up the Rocky Walls. I'm half sure it is/was a Field Move.
This video is covering just the moves that at some point were not HMs, Rock Climb was an HM in the games it's a field move, though I probably should have shown it off more or made a mention of it in the section for BDSP
Wouldnt defog from gen 4 count or is that just for a handful of specific dungeons in dp&p
It's an HM, but as someone else pointed out all the former HMs in BDSP are technically non-HM field moves so they kind of all count
@@AzureFlute ah got it thanks
I never knew a milk drink and soft boiled cuz I never used Milbank or chansey lol
I love obscure game lore
loved this system and they should be making more moves like this instead of removing them
I looked at field moves the same as getting a special item or mode of transportation in an rpg... like getting access to the Enterprise in Final Fantasy. Too bad it took up a move slot.
Gonna see how many i can remember...
Milk Drink and Softboiled share HP with the party, Chatter is technically a field move as you select it from the menu, Sweet Scent attracts Pokemon, Dig escapes the dungeon, Headbutt finds Pokemon in trees, Teleport takes you back to the Pokemon Center
Also, the HM Cut has the optional use of cutting grass, and Flash is only sometimes an HM
Oh I forgot about Unova Rock Smash
What about the most famous of all? The Pokemon yellow Pikachu thunder/thunderbolt outside of battle effect?
That's indeed a neat interaction, but I didn't add it to the video it since it's technically not the move itself being used, just allowing a Pikachu who knows one of the moves to be talked to in Rock Tunnel to light it for a moment. Still, good observation!
I loved your video! It was an excellent topic I was interested to learn more about! And I appreciate how in-depth an explanation of each move you gave!
If I could share a little feedback, the screen got a little busy with all the flashing colours with the gameplay in the background
I subscribed and I'm excited to see what topics you cover next!
The cave music from silver. One of my faves
I personally didn't know that you can zoom out the camera in some caves in x and y through flash, that's neat!
I’m surprised there aren’t more videos about this topic.
SAKUYA!? YOU TOUHOU FAN OR SOMETHING
I thought field moved were so awesome. Great video.
Thanks!
In pokemon yellow if your Pikachu knew thunderbolt it could light up caves so you didn't need flash
For some reason I keep forgetting headbutt was in Gen 1. Really interesting video!
great vid but omg your backgrounds are way too flashy. You can't have multiple video clips in the background, at the same time, and constantly cut between them, in addition to the footage having a lot of transitions and menu uses on its own
I will take that into account for the next videos, thank you. I don't want to just do what I see a lot of other accounts do which is reuse the same looping backgrounds and it was what I thought of doing to be different, but I know it's something I will need to work on coming up with a solution for
never caught a chansey in gen 1 so i never knew of hardboiled lol
