    What seems to work for me is a solution of white vinegar, Dawn and running the motor in a trough of warm water for 30 min. The outboard is a honda 90, 5,500 hours, 24 years old with never any major problems.

    Great vid Capt Dave, But disturbing for anyone who navigates on the St Johns river. Those particles look pretty big. I have two suggestions for you. # 1 While at anchor with good current or at a slow trolling speed, throw some type of meshed strainer over the stern and see what you can catch in it. an old net with some screening in it would do. With this you could find out if the problem is actually in the river or at the ramp. Suggestion # 2 Use compressed air and put it into the tell tale prior to and after fresh water flush. Run some compressed air thru the flush port as well. If you find that stuff is actually floating in the river, then your doing every thing that can be done. If it seems that its coming from the ramp it probably could be avoided by getting out to deeper water before lowering the Suzuki and starting it. How you can accomplish that is something I cant "from where I am" suggest anything.

      THERES FINE, FINE floating dirt also. but no matter where it comes from it ''water'' runs thru the fuel cooler. And can help clog it up. There's no way to catch it. Yes the ramp is a ''particulate'' factory. I even tilt the motor way up as I drive on the trailer, and once on, turn motor off fast! to help not suck more crap.

    Well done
    Pay now or pay later. This has changed my maintenance mindset. For the better!

    I had a 2007 175 hp Suzuki that would start up fine cold but if I ran it to a fishing spot and shut it down to drift fish for awhile it would have a hard time starting it back up. I spent hundreds of dollars taking it in to different shops and not a single "expert" mechanic ever mentioned the fuel cooler. That motor corroded on me this past summer and I had to replace it. Had less than 300 hours on it. Sure wish I had known about the cooler. I bought another 175 2019 Suzuki so hopefully I will have better luck and do my part taking care of the maintenance. Thanks for the tips!

      ''That motor corroded on me this past summer and I had to replace it.''' with proper maintenance, that would never happen.

      @@CaptDavesSportfishing The heads developed a leak and they got corroded. I was getting water in a piston and that's all she wrote. I will stay on top of the new motor maintenance much better than the old one. I own a couple of boats and this one got little use. That was probably an issue as well.

    You should do a test.when you get back flush it with the flush port then after use your Method and see how much it missed

      its about salt and grime in the ''fuel cooler''.....oh, it misses alot. Never ever seen so much crap, till I ran in barrel up to temp.

    You can always tape off the water pick ups , it has to be dry and use duct tape not masking tape

    I wonder what the St Johns will look like in 10 years,as to the fishing? Compared to the mid 80,'s and 90's it sucks now.

      Could! And it gets ''run flushed'' also, but is easier because it is made to be run on it's flush port. I'd REALLY like to get my Merc 15 kicker hooked up to a shifter/throttle up in the boat some day soon. I'd use it even more!

    Capt, just a quick question. Are you doing you engine flush only in the horse trough? No muffs or those other useless rinse/flush ports. I've got a 2019 DF200 and bought a 100 gallon one and that is what I've been using. Just trying to follow along. Thanks for all your tips.

    • @CaptDavesSportfishing
      @CaptDavesSportfishing  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes just my barrel, do not ever use those flush ports on the motor, I did for years and my fuel cooler, look it up, got packed with dirt abd salt, shuts down motor in extreme heat, fuel will vaporize!! too much heat going on under the cowling, so they came up with a part that will clog up easily. I have numerous videos about the toilet I run in abd the shit that ruins everything from anodes to water pumps!!! interior anodes must be checked every 3 months if you run in shit water too.

    That's all you got from a day running? I was expecting a lot more. Seeing the water quality in any Florida river
    If this was after flushing through the flush port,then, I am a bit surprised. at

    • @CaptDavesSportfishing
      @CaptDavesSportfishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      after years, add salt and mud....EQUALS: clogged fuel cooler❗ I have proof. YOU'RE NOT GETTING THAT OUT OF MOTOR WITH FLUSH PORTS❗ ONLY WAY IS ON THE WATER MUFFS OR BETTER A BARREL, multiple mechanics back me up, period. The St. Johns where I fish is a toilet of dirt.

    • @oldhardrock2542
      @oldhardrock2542 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CaptDavesSportfishing I have an older Johnson 2 stroke with no flush port I run in salt water in Indian and Banana River. Always flush with muffs. Past owners probably didn't lots of gunk in thermostat I need to clean out with method you showed in other videos.
      I also have a newer Mercury with flushing ports I run in "clean" lakes in Idaho. I imagine that water has lots of calcium and occasionally is pretty dirty so, there's likely some aggressive cleaning on that engine needed. It does get hot.

    Why do you need a fuel cooler

    • @CaptDavesSportfishing
      @CaptDavesSportfishing  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      HUH????? Because highly educated SUZUKI / YAMAHA (AND OTHERs) engineers believe the 4-stroke outboards need one! Not my idea, 4-strokes have them, so in the heat of summer your fuel doesn't turn to vapor under the cowling where it's 180 degrees
