  • In September 2023 I went to visit my friend Tim at his museum- Northup Drums Museum, Oneonta, New York. I had a fantastic time playing this Ludwig and Ludwig traps kit from the 1920's.
This was a lovely little kit with a rare 5 cow bell set up, I particularly liked the chinese tom toms- I love that sound!
This video was an improvisation in the moment after a nice cup of English breakfast tea!
The opening phrase is based on a Gene Krupa lick from the 1920's that I like.
The low boy cymbals have a lovely clean 'chicking' sound and were a joy to play! The Ludwig and Ludwig 2 piece brass shell snare drums of that era have always been a favourite of mine. They sound so crisp but do not have any unwanted overtones. This I believe is due to the nature of the 2 piece shell and the rolled bearing edges.
I have seen the 1920's sizzle cymbal with tambourine style jingles many times in books but I had never played one! After playing this one I was so inspired I bought one of my very own :)
I hope you enjoyed this video, please don't forget to like and subscribe!
    See you next time!

"And here we have the evololution of the sit-down drum kits from the 1910's to the 1930's ranging from ragtime, jazz, big band, and swing. Any questions?"......"Yes, what would the most prolific drummer of those times sound like playing these kits?"........"Well you're in luck because we have Mr. Wicket here today to show you."
