Sticky Wicket. Jammin' with Steve Smith and Simone on Congas
Here's a bonus jam from my time with Steve Smith at Northup Drums Museum, Oneonta, NY. USA last September.
MY wife Simone was encouraged to join us with an improvised Latin groove just for fun. Well, fun we had and Simone grooved all the way !!
Tim Northups' lovely lady Lynne had already managed to borrow a pair of Congas for her so thank you Lynne for making this possible.
Just come along and groove with us and don't forget to smile!...oh yes and don't forget to subscribe. Thank you.

Sticky Wicket. A very rare 1949 Carlton Combination drum set
มุมมอง 4Kหลายเดือนก่อน
This is a very rare and yet iconic British drum set. It was Carlton's idea of a revolutionary new concept for the drum kit in the late 1940's which combined a bass drum, snare drum, tom tom and pedal tympani plus the usual cymbals woodblock and cowbells of the day but no hi-hat as you will see why. Needless to say it didn't quite catch on which is why these kits are so rare. Anyway, find out al...
Sticky Wicket. Drum duet 5 with Steve Smith
มุมมอง 7K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
In this our 5th improvised drum duet we now get a little more up to date and exchange some firey drum licks akin to an old swing style 'drum battle' a la Gene Krupa & Buddy Rich! All in a good humour though of course. For this I had moved onto a 1939 WMP Slingerland Radio King set with a lovely warm tone, which incidentally I have exactly the same model dating from 1942 in my collection. Steve ...
Sticky Wicket. 1920's British Dance Band Drumming and Drum Kit
มุมมอง 62K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
Drum sets of the 1920's were quite basic, comprising mostly of a snare drum, bass drum, cowbells, woodblocks and china tom tom. The cymbals were often a rim mounted clanger and/or lowboy hats plus a small cymbal for crashes and choke effects. The drums were also often the centre piece of the new 'Jass' or 'Jazz' outfits and the Brtitish Dance Bands consequently some of the drummers became a lit...

Well we just swapped kits for this improvisation. No planned ideas, I kicked off with a tom tom pattern and away we went for more 'drum fun' at Northup Drums Museum. Thanks again to Tim Northup for keeping the camera rolling as we rolled away on his beautiful drum sets.
Sticky Wicket. Drum duet 3 with Steve Smith

On our third improvised duet Steve played one of his vintage drum specials 'Salt Peanuts' on the 1930's Leedy Black Onyx Traps Set once owned and played by Leedy endorser Walter G.Howe. I had some fun on the Leedy 1928 Black Elite kit which has a fabulously large China Tom mounted on a cradle. Both sets have factory painted heads of Indian scenes too so they compliment each other really well. I...
Sticky Wicket.1930's British Dance Band drumming.
มุมมอง 8K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
Here I play little bit of 1930's British Dance Band drumming on a beautiful drum set of the day. It's a large kit with plenty of traps plus 3 doubled head toms, which were becoming very popular at the time. The toms are well in evidence when I play along to the 78rpm recording of 'Jungle Fever' by Harry Roy and his Dance Band. The Temple Blocks come into their own on the second track 'My Chinato...

We move kits for the second improvised duet. Steve plays my favourite of Tim's drum sets, the 1930's Leedy Console (or Rolling Traps Table) kit with the rare Butterfly Girl factory painted head. I play the lovely 1928 Leedy 'Moose' scene painted head Traps set. Here we go with more 'drum fun'!

On September 27th 2023, during the time my wife and I were at the Northup Drums Museum, Tim Northup organised 'Drummers Wednesday' during which a good many drummer friends of Tim's dropped by for a chat or a play including Mr Steve Smith. Steve had made his name with the rock band 'Journey' but is also universally acclaimed for his jazz playing and superb technique, particularly with his own ba...
Sticky Wicket. Jumping at the Woodside play along
มุมมอง 2.7K4 หลายเดือนก่อน
The track I'm playing to is from a recording by Count Basie and his Orchestra circa 1938 and was the best viewed video of mine on the now defunct Next Level Chops TH-cam channel. In it's day it achieved over a million views, 1.1M to be exact! However, although it was one of my favourite tunes to play with my Swing Orchestra at the time, I didn't consider this version worthy of putting on the ch...
Sticky Wicket. Leedy Full Dress 'Traps Kit' c1930
มุมมอง 2.5K5 หลายเดือนก่อน
This is a lovely little set from the Leedy factory Elkhart, Indianna dated around 1930 and to my mind a real looker. It is what is known as a 'Full Dress Kit' with an eye catching finish which was in those days was advertised as equipment to vastly improve your work prospects and drumming career. Did it, well maybe? Either way, as well as looking at it I love playing this kit as you will see in...
Sticky Wicket. 1920'S Traps Kit Solo.
มุมมอง 1.3K6 หลายเดือนก่อน
This drum set has an intriguing finish to it and with the illuminated 'mountain and lake' scene on the bass drum I was drawn to playing this lovely little kit. It's a Ludwiggold Sheik Deluxe kit from 1927 with a lovely set of 'traps'. When I played this kit I just had some fun with the sounds of the drums and traps without any particular stylistic ideas in mind other than that of the period. I ...
Sticky Wicket. New Orleans Drumming on his 1920's Ludwig & Ludwig
มุมมอง 2.5K6 หลายเดือนก่อน
This was one of the first videos Harry and I made for the 'Next Level Chops' TH-cam channel and it was one of my favourites. I love playing old New Orleans style drumming and it has such a lift to it in a super relaxed sort of way. As for the drum set, that really came about when I chanced upon the bass drum for sale at the UK's National Drum Fair some years ago. It was in a very sorry state an...
Sticky Wicket 1940's Gene Krupa Style Solo
มุมมอง 1.6K6 หลายเดือนก่อน
I play 1940's Slingerland 'Radio Kings' with my Swing Orchestra and I love 'em. They are to me the iconic sound of Swing Drumming and of course these drums were pioneered by Gene Krupa and the Slingerland Dum Company way back in 1936. They still sound great to me today and this set at Northup Drums is no exception. However this kit has all original calf skins and in this small studio set up it ...
Sticky Wicket 1930'S Tom Toms & Traps Solo
มุมมอง 7277 หลายเดือนก่อน
As a big fan of Leedy drums from the 1920's & 30's, it's no surprise that this was my favourite set in the museum. Those early tuneable tom toms with the tack on bottom heads were just beautiful. This is a rare kit too with the factory painted 'Butterfly Girl' bass drum head set in a well designed console and a nice array of traps. All that together with a really crisp full bodied Leedy Broadwa...

You’ll be horrified to hear this, but as a teenager in the 1990’s I was in a few bands, whose music ranged from Nirvana, to Gn’R’s to Metallica.. I played on a kit that was bought for my older brother, from a family friend who used to play in a Jazz band in the 1960’s.. On one occasion our guitarist punctured the bass drum calf hide with his guitar, and I struggled to find a replacement, I gave up playing soon after, thanks to work etc.. Fast forward to 2011 and the kit was laying in my loft having not been played in a decade or two, and did sone research, and the kit turns out to be 1937 Premier, with some 1960’s mods / additions 😮 I feel so bad, for what I put that kit through 🫣

If it is a drumkit once belonged to the drummer of Arthur Roseberry's kit kat dance band, I'm glad to say that I own a lovely 78 rpm record (Bluegrass / Virginia) where this drumkit is being played. Thanks for sharing.

That's wild! I've done pitch changing with my drums by inserting a length of fuel line in the vent hole of my floor tom and blowing or drawing air. It's a cool experiment anyone can do with less than 10 bucks of hose from the hardware or auto parts store.

I play Premier kits. I've had the same one for every gig for 30 years. I also have a 60's eta Gretsch kit and a 50's era Slingerland kit. I just like the sound of older drums. On the other hand, all of my cymbals are Paiste Signature. Aside from one Ziljian 20" ride I was given by my father who bought it new in 1962, all my cymbals are modern.
