Another super cool monster of a bass drum. I was on tour back in the 80s and we had a night off in Dallas, so we went to see the Misfits. Their drummer Robo (ex-Black Flag) had got hold of a massive 28" bass drums which had a red light inside that illuminated a Misfits logo cut into the black front head. I thought that was cool, but this ..... is sublime!
Beautiful solo Steve. You really caught the essence of those old drums, but more importantly, the drummers who played those drums, way back when! Thank you for doing this video. Really enjoyed watching it. -b
Really cool those historic Drums are so beautifully preserved and displayed for people to see & hear.. I appreciate and would enjoy seing more Vids on Historic Drum Kits.. Great Vid Steve.
Cool Steve. My mother got me a windmill kit. a Ludwig from the late teens early 20s back in 1974. She paid 40$ for it, which was about all she made at her part time job per week. I still have it as do I have the 1966 Ludwig that replaced it in 1978. That one was $350. I paid her back years later for that one. Lol.
I fookin love Steve Smith. It's all about the history and I believe that is what we hear in our favourite drummers.... the history. Steve Steve is teaching us the history.
Seeing Steve Smith interpreting this styal from the early days of would would eventually become drum set playing; really hit home for me, just how monumental, and innovative drummer Kenny Clark’s decision to move the primary time keeping element from eights notes on the bass drum known as feathering or ghosting to dotted eight and sixteenth note or ( what became known as the swing Rythm ) to the ride cymbal. Arguably one of the top three most significant innovations, not only as far as drum set goes but in the history of music in “Western civilization. If you think about it. There would not be what we call Rock and Roll music or Jazz Be bop music had Kenny Clark not stop playing consistant eighth notes on the bass drum, which moved the point of focus as far as time keeping goes to the right hand freeing up the leeft hand and bass drum foot to become totally independent and free to syncopate itself into musical conversation with the rest of the band. That along with the invention of the bass drum pedal, is arguably among the most significant innovations in the history of American popular music which intern became western civilizations popular music. All that, do to Kenny Clark decision to move the main time keeping element from eights on the bass drum to swing Rythm on the ride cymbal.
Oh my God!! This drum kit is still sounding awesome, Steve!! This all rythmed solo full of 'diddles and strucks you performed made me remember the great drummers of that "golden era", like Gene Krupa, Bud Rich, Papa Jo Jones and so many others. Thanks for sharing with us!! Best regards and greetings from Sao Paulo, Brazil.
Whatever the opposite of "anachronistic" is, you're sounding very that! Well, aside from the extremely clean recording. It's wild to me to hear to a drum kit played convincingly in that told style coming through modern mics and preamps, without all the distortion and frequency filtering happening in that old equipment. Thanks for sharing
Stickey wicket a uk drummer plays and talks about these old time kits , anybody who likes this old time playing should check him out . I love the sound of these old kits and it’s was played really authentically
Chick Webb would be proud! Back in the 80’s, an old drummer down the street sold me a BD, a Black Beauty, and a trap case full of... traps. I had a low boy with those hats, a Chinese tom, that funny large rivet cymbal, an old kick pedal, and a funky little China cymbal. I still have the BB snare (in a bit of disrepair though), one of the low boy hats (I use it for a splash), and the funky China. The other stuff has evaporated, and I could kick myself for selling that 28” Ludwig bass drum years ago. :(
A lot like my first teacher’s drum set. At 7 it was huge. He had an attachment on the bass pedal that would hit a mounted cymbal on the bass drum. Went through the Joe Morello books from the 60’s on that set trying to reach those toms without killing my self. Love those bass drum painted heads.
I like the way those red colored Chinese Tom Tom drums sound. These Tom Tom drums had tacked heads. These drums had no rims or tuning lugs but they were still beautiful drums. I like the painting of the dragons on the drum heads.
Part of me was expecting to hear a bar or two from "La Do Da" but this was incredible! I do have to wonder why they made the hi-hat 6 inches high back then! Whoever made it taller so they could incorporate it's full use needs their own documentary! Someone needs to make retro heads like this for sale!
The evolution of the “snow shoe” to the “low boy” to the “hi-hat” is pretty well documented. Steve is playing a low boy in this video. Dw makes a modern day low boy , I believe mainly marketed to solo singer song writer types as well as historical enthusiasts. If memory serves correctly, ( which it may not due to the amount of drinking 2020 has warranted), Ken Burns Jazz talks about the evolution of the drum set (including hi hat )in pretty good detail. I’d been a few years since I’ve watched the whole thing.
Beautiful kit I love the collection
He literally channeled the feel and sound of players from the same era! 🤘🏼
Wow I'm a drummer in Oneonta and never knew about the Northup museum
An actual low boy! Awesome!
NICE, Steve could make buckets sound GREAT!
Now THAT was frikkin cool. Play some more.
Classy I can watch him do that all day those toms at the end 😃
Yeah. I could listen to that all day
Great fun!
Like a four tentacled Octopus !! A brain in each one ! Truly Awesome, thanks..
I love those old kits...especially the low boy sock hats

Wow! Genius drumming obsession
Beautiful

Steve, I’m sure You wish you could have all those neat older drums in your house LOL. Obviously, you can make ANY kit sound FANTASTIC!
