- Gene Krupa and Papa Joe Jones talk about mentors ,drums and technique. Rare interview wth Gene at his home in Yonkers and Papa Joe teaching at Frank Ippolitoes Professional Percussion Center NYC.
I saw Gene Krupa when I was around nine years old. My Dad took me to the Metropole Cafe and I was literally in heaven! Since then, he’s always been my hero!
Jo Jones was the one. He and Krupa are the ones to listen to.
"I don't care who you are, you gotta start with the drums" --god damn right. and nobody comes close to his mastery of brushes, even the other greats.
Papa Jo is as good as it gets.

One of the true legends - a giant - a King. And still limber & graceful in his later years.
Papa Joe was the happiest drummer ever! He was also the essence of swing in my opinion. Basie all the way! What a great era for jazz. Their time was indeed the greatest.
This is one of those things that you watch and marvel at what human brains, and human bodies, can do.
While I think about it, my grandfather was pretty damn good on drums. I never truly appreciated his talent at the time, too busy listening to rock, his brushwork sticks in my mind as being wholly sympathetic, expressive and able to convey attack at the same time.

I Met Joe and my teacher played with both. Played with Gene two days before he passed at Gene's house. They were good friends.

Fabulous, PapaJoe always swings like mad and always looks like having a ball doing it. I saw an interview with Buddy Rich who adopted Krupa’s set up , and kept it that way throughout his career

Papa lights up the room with his smile and confidence, as if to say."what about this", or "pretty good huh?". If anyone has a right to be cocky, he does. But, I do not get that impression.

Gene Krupa's musical philosophy is so underrated with regards to being aware of the audience getting restless/bored of listening to an extended drum solo. Man knows how to entertain a crowd.

Gene was quite comical and clearly influenced by Papa Jo, but to say he's way behind jo and lacks the finesse of jo would be a vast understatement.
