  • Here I play little bit of 1930's British Dance Band drumming on a beautiful drum set of the day. It's a large kit with plenty of traps plus 3 doubled head toms, which were becoming very popular at the time. The toms are well in evidence when I play along to the 78rpm recording of 'Jungle Fever' by Harry Roy and his Dance Band. The Temple Blocks come into their own on the second track 'My Chinatown/Limehouse Blues also from Harry Roy and the band.
The kit is a 1936 Premier Swingster model Console Kit from my British Drum Museum collection. It has, what Premier called at the time, a 'Wonder Finish' and you can see why as even after almost 90 years the gold still sparkles! Together with that and the applied 'Diamond Brilliants' this is certainly what is described as a 'Full Dress Set' and most likely would have belonged to a drummer of some note in a popular dance orchestra of the day. It's quite a kit to set up too as you can see from the speeded up filming at the beginning but once set up it's a lot of fun to play.
I hope you enjoy this video and thanks to Harry for filming it. Don't forget to subscribe to this channel as there's much more to come. Many thanks.

The drumming, particularly on Jungle Fever, really puts Keith Moon's playing into some historical context for me. Thanks for the video.

Thank you for your videos! My grandma grew up during the Big Band era of music, and she would've been thrilled with these chops. Every time that I hear this type of music reminds me of that style!

You’ll be horrified to hear this, but as a teenager in the 1990’s I was in a few bands, whose music ranged from Nirvana, to Gn’R’s to Metallica.. I played on a kit that was bought for my older brother, from a family friend who used to play in a Jazz band in the 1960’s..
On one occasion our guitarist punctured the bass drum calf hide with his guitar, and I struggled to find a replacement, I gave up playing soon after, thanks to work etc..
Fast forward to 2011 and the kit was laying in my loft having not been played in a decade or two, and did sone research, and the kit turns out to be 1937 Premier, with some 1960’s mods / additions 😮 I feel so bad, for what I put that kit through 🫣

0:03 WHAT IS THAT? I have something very similar, painted skin, big rivets, rings on side. It has some loose stuff inside, gives a kind of snare sound. Never seen another, know nothing about mine, would like to know more about it. P.S. Oh, great playing, of course, very snappy. (Edit) O.K. just watched the Leedy kit video, I understand I have a China tom, well I never, wonder how old it is.

Do you an idea how much this set cost originally?

That’s a good question. I shall see if I can find a similar set up in a Premier catalogue of that year.
